Global weak solutions to the Nordström-Vlasov system

The Nordström-Vlasov system is a Lorentz invariant model for a self-gravitating collisionless gas. We establish suitable a-priori-bounds on the solutions of this system, which together with energy estimates and the smoothing effect of ``momentum averaging'' yield the existence of global weak solutions to the corresponding initial value problem. In the process we improve the continuation criterion for classical solutions which was derived recently. The weak solutions are shown to preserve mass.

On Blowup for Gain-Term-Only classical and relativistic Boltzmann equations

We show that deletion of the loss part of the collision term in all physically relevant versions of the Boltzmann equation, including the relativistic case, will in general lead to blowup in finite time of a solution and hence prevent global existence. Our result corrects an error in the proof given in Ref. [12], where the result was announced for the classical hard sphere case; here we give a simpler proof which applies much more generally.

The non-relativistic limit of the Nordström-Vlasov system

The Nordström-Vlasov system provides an interesting relativistic generalization of the Vlasov-Poisson system in the gravitational case, even though there is no direct physical application. The study of this model will probably lead to a better mathematical understanding of the class of non-linear systems consisting of hyperbolic and transport equations. In this paper it is shown that solutions of the Nordström-Vlasov system converge to solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson system in a pointwise sense as the speed of light tends to infinity, providing a further and rigorous justification of this model as a \textit{genuine} relativistic generalization of the Vlasov-Poisson system.

Outgoing radiation from an isolated collisionless plasma

The asymptotic properties at future null infinity of the solutions of the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system whose global existence for small data has been established by the author in a previous work are investigated. These solutions describe a collisionless plasma isolated from incoming radiation. It is shown that a non-negative quantity associated to the plasma decreases as a consequence of the dissipation of energy in form of outgoing radiation. This quantity represents the analogue of the Bondi mass in general relativity.

Global classical solutions to the spherically symmetric Nordström-Vlasov system

Classical solutions of the spherically symmetric Nordström-Vlasov system are shown to exist globally in time. The main motivation for investigating the mathematical properties of the Nordström-Vlasov system is its relation to the Einstein-Vlasov system. The former is not a physically correct model, but it is expected to capture some of the typical features of the latter, which constitutes a physically satisfactory, relativistic model but is mathematically much more complex. We show that classical solutions of the spherically symmetric Nordström-Vlasov system exist globally in time for compactly supported initial data under the additional condition that there is a lower bound on the modulus of the angular momentum of the initial particle system. We emphasize that this is not a smallness condition and that our result holds for arbitrary large initial data satisfying this hypothesis.

On classical solutions of the Nordström-Vlasov system

The Nordström-Vlasov system describes the dynamics of a self-gravitating ensemble of collisionless particles in the framework of the Nordström scalar theory of gravitation. We prove existence and uniqueness of classical solutions of the Cauchy problem in three dimensions and establish a condition which guarantees that the solution is global in time. Moreover, we show that if one changes the sign of the source term in the field equation, which heuristically corresponds to the case of a repulsive gravitational force, then solutions blow up in finite time for a large class of initial data. Finally, we prove global existence of classical solutions for the one dimensional version of the system with the correct sign in the field equation.

Spherically symmetric steady states of galactic dynamics in scalar gravity

The kinetic motion of the stars of a galaxy is considered within the framework of a relativistic scalar theory of gravitation. This model, even though unphysical, may represent a good laboratory where to study in a rigorous, mathematical way those problems, like the influence of the gravitational radiation on the dynamics, which are still beyond our present understanding of the physical model represented by the Einstein--Vlasov system. The present paper is devoted to derive the equations of the model and to prove the existence of spherically symmetric equilibria with finite radius.
