A Dynamical Approach to Non-Commutative de Finetti Theory

We develop a dynamical framework for non-commutative de Finetti theory. We first establish the non-commutative Hewitt-Savage 0-1 law for quantum stochastic processes. We identify the factorization condition of the distribution of a spreadable process which characterizes tail-triviality, which is also characterized dynamically in terms of a certain attractivity property of the distribution. These three equivalent ergodic conditions identify a distinguished level in the non-commutative hierarchy of ergodic properties, which all collapse to ergodicity in the classical probability setting. To pass from the ergodic to the general case, we construct the conditional expectation onto the tail algebra for a spreadable process, in the GNS representation of the distribution of the canonical bilateral extension of the process. In this representation we establish the non-commutative Olshen Theorem identifying the tail algebra with the stationary algebra, and with the exchangeable algebra when the process is exchangeable. The resulting conditional expectation in particular inherits the same type of factorization property as distributions satisfying the Hewitt-Savage 0-1 law. This factorization strengthens conditional independence conditions arising in previous literature, while collapsing to the same notion in the classical case. This dynamical viewpoint leads to the identification of the minimal distributional symmetry underlying non-commutative de Finetti Theory, which we call weak spreadability, and which in the classical setting is equivalent to exchangeability. We prove that a stationary process is weakly spreadable if and only if its tail algebra admits a unique normal conditional expectation satisfying Hewitt-Savage type factorization, thereby establishing a general non-commutative de Finetti Theorem.

On the Ryll-Nardzewski Theorem for Quantum Stochastic Processes

We prove a Ryll-Nardzewski Theorem for quantum stochastic processes, that shows that under natural assumptions which generalize the classical probability setting, the distributional symmetries of exchangeability and spreadability are the same. We further show that product states on twisted tensor products of C^*-algebras provide a source of counterexamples to the Ryll-Nardzewski theorem, namely of quantum stochastic processes which are spreadable but not exchangeable. Furthermore, in this setting, we also analyze braidability of product states. We then prove an extended de Finetti Theorem for quantum stochastic processes whose distribution factorizes through twisted tensor products.

De Finetti Theorem on the infinite non-commutative torus

The set of spreadabl estates on an infinite non-commutive torus \mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Z}_\alpha} is determined for all values of the deformation parameter {\alpha}. If {\alpha} is irrational, the canonical trace is the only spreadable 2{\pi} state. If {\alpha} is rational, the set of all spreadable states is a Bauer 2{\pi} simplex. Moreover, its boundary is the set of all infinite products of a single state on C(T). Finally, the simplex of all stationary states on \mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Z}_\alpha} is proved to be the Poulsen simplex for all values of the deformation parameter {\alpha}.

The Motzkin subproduct system

We introduce a subproduct system of finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces by using the Motzkin planar algebra and its Motzkin Jones-Wenzl idempotents, which generalizes the Temperley-Lieb subproduct system of Habbestad and Neshveyev. We provide a description of the corresponding Toeplitz and Cuntz-Pimsner C$^*$-algebras as universal C$^*$-algebras, defined in terms of generators and relations, and we highlight properties of their representation theory.

Non-commutative skew-product extension dynamical systems

Starting from a uniquely ergodic action of a locally compact group $G$ on a compact space $X_0$, we consider non-commutative skew-product extensions of the dynamics, on the crossed product $C(X_0)\rtimes_\alpha\mathbb{Z}$, through a $1$-cocycle of $G$ in $\mathbb{T}$, with $\alpha$ commuting with the given dynamics. We first prove that any such two skew-product extensions are conjugate if and only if the corresponding cocycles are cohomologous. We then study unique ergodicity and unique ergodicity w.r.t. the fixed-point subalgebra by characterizing both in terms of the cocycle assigning the dynamics. The set of all invariant states is also determined: it is affinely homeomorphic with $\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{T})$, the Borel probability measures on the one-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}$, as long as the system is not uniquely ergodic. Finally, we show that unique ergodicity w.r.t. the fixed-point subalgebra of a skew-product extension amounts to the uniqueness of an invariant conditional expectation onto the fixed-point subalgebra

Weakly-monotone C*-algebras as Exel-Laca algebras

An abstract characterization of weakly monotone $C^*$-algebras, namely the concrete $C^*$-algebras generated by creators and annihilators acting on the so-called weakly monotone Fock spaces, is given in terms of (quotient of) suitable Exel-Laca algebras. The weakly monotone $C^*$-algebra indexed by $\mathbb{N}$ is shown to be a type-I $C^*$-algebra and its representation theory is entirely determined, whereas the weakly monotone $C^*$-algebra indexed by $\mathbb{Z}$ is shown not to be of type $I$.

Two Results in the Quantum Theory of Measurements

Two theorems with applications to the quantum theory of measurements are stated and proven. The first one clarifies and amends von Neumann's Measurement Postulate used in the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics. The second one clarifies the relationship between ``events'' and ``measurements'' and the meaning of measurements in the $ETH$-Approach to quantum mechanics.

Freedman's theorem for unitarily invariant states on the CCR algebra

The set of states on ${\rm CCR}(\ch)$, the CCR algebra of a separable Hilbert space $\ch$, is here looked at as a natural object to obtain a non-commutative version of Freedman's theorem for unitarily invariant stochastic processes. In this regard, we provide a complete description of the compact convex set of states of ${\rm CCR}(\ch)$ that are invariant under the action of all automorphisms induced in second quantization by unitaries of $\ch$. We prove that this set is a Bauer simplex, whose extreme states are either the canonical trace of the CCR algebra or Gaussian states with variance at least $1$.

Boundary effects and the stability of the low energy spectrum of the AKLT model

In this paper we study the low-lying spectrum of the AKLT model perturbed by small, finite-range potentials and with open boundary conditions imposed at the edges of the chain. Our analysis is based on the \emph{local, iterative Lie Schwinger block-diagonalization method} which allows us to control small interaction terms localized near the boundary of the chain that are responsible for the possible splitting of the ground-state energy of the AKLT Hamiltonian into energy levels separated by small gaps. This improves earlier results concerning the persistence of the so called \emph{bulk} gap in these models, besides illustrating the power of our general methods in a non-trivial application.

Low energy spectrum of the XXZ model coupled to a magnetic field

For a class of Hamiltonians of $XXZ$ spin chains in a uniform external magnetic field that are small quantum perturbations of an Ising Hamiltonian, it is shown that the spectral gap above the ground-state energy remains strictly positive when the perturbation is turned on, uniformly in the length of the chain. This result is proven for perturbations of both the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic Ising Hamiltonian. In the antiferromagnetic case, the external magnetic field is required to be small. For a chain of an even number of sites, the two-fold degenerate ground-state energy of the unperturbed antiferromagnetic Hamiltonian may split into two energy levels separated by a very small gap. These results are proven by using a new, quite subtle refinement of a method developed in earlier work and used to iteratively block-diagonalize Hamiltonians of systems confined to ever larger subsets of a lattice by using strictly local unitary conjugations. The new method developed in this paper provides complete control of boundary effects on the low-energy spectrum of perturbed Ising chains uniformly in their length.

Quantum Operations on Conformal Nets

On a conformal net $\mathcal{A}$, one can consider collections of unital completely positive maps on each local algebra $\mathcal{A}(I)$, subject to natural compatibility, vacuum preserving and conformal covariance conditions. We call \emph{quantum operations} on $\mathcal{A}$ the subset of extreme such maps. The usual automorphisms of $\mathcal{A}$ (the vacuum preserving invertible unital *-algebra morphisms) are examples of quantum operations, and we show that the fixed point subnet of $\mathcal{A}$ under all quantum operations is the Virasoro net generated by the stress-energy tensor of $\mathcal{A}$. Furthermore, we show that every irreducible conformal subnet $\mathcal{B}\subset\mathcal{A}$ is the fixed points under a subset of quantum operations. When $\mathcal{B}\subset\mathcal{A}$ is discrete (or with finite Jones index), we show that the set of quantum operations on $\mathcal{A}$ that leave $\mathcal{B}$ elementwise fixed has naturally the structure of a compact (or finite) hypergroup, thus extending some results of [Bis17]. Under the same assumptions, we provide a Galois correspondence between intermediate conformal nets and closed subhypergroups. In particular, we show that intermediate conformal nets are in one-to-one correspondence with intermediate subfactors, extending a result of Longo in the finite index/completely rational conformal net setting [Lon03].

Galois Correspondence and Fourier Analysis on Local Discrete Subfactors

Discrete subfactors include a particular class of infinite index subfactors and all finite index ones. A discrete subfactor is called local when it is braided and it fulfills a commutativity condition motivated by the study of inclusion of Quantum Field Theories in the algebraic Haag-Kastler setting. In [BDG21], we proved that every irreducible local discrete subfactor arises as the fixed point subfactor under the action of a canonical compact hypergroup. In this work, we prove a Galois correspondence between intermediate von Neumann algebras and closed subhypergroups, and we study the subfactor theoretical Fourier transform in this context. Along the way, we extend the main results concerning $α$-induction and $σ$-restriction for braided subfactors previously known in the finite index case.

Compact Hypergroups from Discrete Subfactors

Conformal inclusions of chiral conformal field theories, or more generally inclusions of quantum field theories, are described in the von Neumann algebraic setting by nets of subfactors, possibly with infinite Jones index if one takes non-rational theories into account. With this situation in mind, we study in a purely subfactor theoretical context a certain class of braided discrete subfactors with an additional commutativity constraint, that we call locality, and which corresponds to the commutation relations between field operators at space-like distance in quantum field theory. Examples of subfactors of this type come from taking a minimal action of a compact group on a factor and considering the fixed point subalgebra. We show that to every irreducible local discrete subfactor $\mathcal{N}\subset\mathcal{M}$ of type ${I\!I\!I}$ there is an associated canonical compact hypergroup (an invariant for the subfactor) which acts on $\mathcal{M}$ by unital completely positive (ucp) maps and which gives $\mathcal{N}$ as fixed points. To show this, we establish a duality pairing between the set of all $\mathcal{N}$-bimodular ucp maps on $\mathcal{M}$ and a certain commutative unital $C^*$-algebra, whose spectrum we identify with the compact hypergroup. If the subfactor has depth 2, the compact hypergroup turns out to be a compact group. This rules out the occurrence of compact \emph{quantum} groups acting as global gauge symmetries in local conformal field theory.

On truncated $t$-free Fock spaces: spectrum of position operators and shift-invariant states

The ergodic properties of the shift on both full and $m$-truncated $t$-free $C^*$-algebras are analyzed. In particular, the shift is shown to be uniquely ergodic with respect to the fixed-point algebra. In addition, for every $m\geq 1$, the invariant states of the shift acting on the $m$-truncated $t$-free $C^*$-algebra are shown to yield a $m+1$-dimensional Choquet simplex, which collapses to a segment in the full case. Finally, the spectrum of the position operators on the $m$-truncated $t$-free Fock space is also determined.

On the monotone $C^*$-algebra

The concrete monotone $C^*$-algebra, that is the (unital) $C^*$-algebra generated by monotone independent algebraic random variables of Bernoulli type, is characterized abstractly in terms of generators and relations and is shown to be UHF. Moreover, its Bratteli diagram is explicitly given, which allows for the computation of its $K$-theory.

Relative entropy of coherent states on general CCR algebras

For a subalgebra of a generic CCR algebra, we consider the relative entropy between a general (not necessarily pure) quasifree state and a coherent excitation thereof. We give a unified formula for this entropy in terms of single-particle modular data. Further, we investigate changes of the relative entropy along subalgebras arising from an increasing family of symplectic subspaces; here convexity of the entropy (as usually considered for the Quantum Null Energy Condition) is replaced with lower estimates for the second derivative, composed of "bulk terms" and "boundary terms". Our main assumption is that the subspaces are in differential modular position, a regularity condition that generalizes the usual notion of half-sided modular inclusions. We illustrate our results in relevant examples, including thermal states for the conformal $U(1)$-current.

Ergodic properties of the Anzai skew-product for the noncommutative torus

We provide a systematic study of a noncommutative extension of the classical Anzai skew-product for the cartesian product of two copies of the unit circle to the noncommutative 2-tori. In particular, some relevant ergodic properties are proved for these quantum dynamical systems, extending the corresponding ones enjoyed by the classical Anzai skew-product. As an application, for a uniquely ergodic Anzai skew-product $\F$ on the noncommutative $2$-torus $\ba_\a$, $\a\in\br$, we investigate the pointwise limit, $\lim_{n\to+\infty}\frac1{n}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}ł^{-k}\F^k(x)$, for $x\in\ba_\a$ and $ł$ a point in the unit circle, and show that there exist examples for which the limit does not exist even in the weak topology.
