Block-diagonalization of infinite-volume lattice Hamiltonians with unbounded interactions

In this paper we extend the local iterative Lie-Schwinger block-diagonalization method - introduced in [DFPR3] for quantum lattice systems with bounded interactions in arbitrary dimension- to systems with unbounded interactions, i.e., systems of bosons. We study Hamiltonians that can be written as the sum of a gapped operator consisting of a sum of on-site terms and a perturbation given by relatively bounded (but unbounded) interaction potentials of short range multiplied by a real coupling constant t. For sufficiently small values of |t| independent of the size of the lattice, we prove that the spectral gap above the ground-state energy of such Hamiltonians remains strictly positive. As in [DFPR3], we iteratively construct a sequence of local block-diagonalization steps based on unitary conjugations of the original Hamiltonian and inspired by the Lie-Schwinger procedure. To control the ranges and supports of the effective potentials generated in the course of our block-diagonalization steps, we use methods introduced in [DFPR3] for Hamiltonians with bounded interactions potentials. However, due to the unboundedness of the interaction potentails, weighted operator norms must be introduced, and some of the steps of the inductive proof by which we control the weighted norms of the effective potentials require special care to cope with matrix elements of unbounded operators. We stress that no large-field problems appear in our construction. In this respect our operator methods turn out to be an efficient tool to separate the low-energy spectral region of the Hamiltonian from other spectral regions, where the unbounded nature of the interaction potentials would become manifest.

Invariant Conditional Expectations and Unique Ergodicity for Anzai Skew-Products

Anzai skew-products are shown to be uniquely ergodic with respect to the fixed-point subalgebra if and only if there is a unique conditional expectation onto such a subalgebra which is invariant under the dynamics. For the particular case of skew-products, this solves a question raised by B. Abadie and K. Dykema in the wider context of $C^*$-dynamical systems.

Skew-product dynamical systems for crossed product $C^*$-algebras and their ergodic properties

Starting from a discrete $C^*$-dynamical system $(\mathfrak{A}, θ, ω_o)$, we define and study most of the main ergodic properties of the crossed product $C^*$-dynamical system $(\mathfrak{A}\rtimes_α\mathbb{Z}, Φ_{θ, u},\om_o\circ E)$, $E:\mathfrak{A}\rtimes_α\mathbb{Z}\rightarrow\ga$ being the canonical conditional expectation of $\mathfrak{A}\rtimes_α\mathbb{Z}$ onto $\mathfrak{A}$, provided $\a\in\aut(\ga)$ commute with the $*$-automorphism $þ$ up tu a unitary $u\in\ga$. Here, $Φ_{θ, u}\in\aut(\mathfrak{A}\rtimes_α\mathbb{Z})$ can be considered as the fully noncommutative generalisation of the celebrated skew-product defined by H. Anzai for the product of two tori in the classical case.

Positive energy representations of Sobolev diffeomorphism groups of the circle

We show that any positive energy projective unitary representation of Diff(S^1) extends to a strongly continuous projective unitary representation of the fractional Sobolev diffeomorphisms D^s(S^1) for any real s>3, and in particular to C^k-diffeomorphisms Diff^k(S^1) with k>=4. A similar result holds for the universal covering groups provided that the representation is assumed to be a direct sum of irreducibles. As an application we show that a conformal net of von Neumann algebras on S^1 is covariant with respect to D^s(S^1), s > 3. Moreover every direct sum of irreducible representations of a conformal net is also D^s(S^1)-covariant.

Local iterative block-diagonalization of gapped Hamiltonians: a new tool in singular perturbation theory

In this paper the local iterative Lie-Schwinger block-diagonalization method, introduced in [FP], [DFPR1], and [DFPR2] for quantum chains, is extended to higher-dimensional quantum lattice systems with Hamiltonians that can be written as the sum of an unperturbed gapped operator, consisting of a sum of on-site terms, and a perturbation consisting of bounded interaction potentials of short range mutltiplied by a real coupling constant t. Our goal is to prove that the spectral gap above the ground-state energy of such Hamiltonians persists for sufficiently small values of |t|, independently of the size of the lattice. New ideas and concepts are necessary to extend our method to systems in dimension d > 1: As in our earlier work, a sequence of local block-diagonalization steps based on judiciously chosen unitary conjugations of the original Hamiltonian is introduced. The supports of effective interaction potentials generated in the course of these block-diagonalization steps can be identified with what we call minimal rectangles contained in the lattice, a concept that serves to tackle combinatorial problems that arise in the course of iterating the block-diagonalization steps. For a given minimal rectangle, control of the effective interaction potentials generated in each block-diagonalization step with support in the given rectangle is achieved by exploiting a variety of rather subtle mechanisms which include, for example, the use of weighted sums of paths consisting of overlapping rectangles and of large denominators, expressed in terms of sums of orthogonal projections, that serve to control analogous sums of projections in the numerators resulting from the unitary conjugations of the interaction potential terms involved in the local block-diagonalization step.

Solitons and nonsmooth diffeomorphisms in conformal nets

We show that any solitonic representation of a conformal (diffeomorphism covariant) net on S^1 has positive energy and construct an uncountable family of mutually inequivalent solitonic representations of any conformal net, using nonsmooth diffeomorphisms. On the loop group nets, we show that these representations induce representations of the subgroup of loops compactly supported in S^1 \ {-1} which do not extend to the whole loop group. In the case of the U(1)-current net, we extend the diffeomorphism covariance to the Sobolev diffeomorphisms D^s(S^1), s > 2, and show that the positive-energy vacuum representations of Diff_+(S^1) with integer central charges extend to D^s(S^1). The solitonic representations constructed above for the U(1)-current net and for Virasoro nets with integral central charge are continuously covariant with respect to the stabilizer subgroup of Diff_+(S^1) of -1 of the circle.

Infinite index extensions of local nets and defects

Subfactor theory provides a tool to analyze and construct extensions of Quantum Field Theories, once the latter are formulated as local nets of von Neumann algebras. We generalize some of the results of [LR95] to the case of extensions with infinite Jones index. This case naturally arises in physics, the canonical examples are given by global gauge theories with respect to a compact (non-finite) group of internal symmetries. Building on the works of Izumi, Longo, Popa [ILP98] and Fidaleo, Isola [FI99], we consider generalized Q-systems (of intertwiners) for a semidiscrete inclusion of properly infinite von Neumann algebras, which generalize ordinary Q-systems introduced by Longo [Lon94] to the infinite index case. We characterize inclusions which admit generalized Q-systems of intertwiners and define a braided product among the latter, hence we construct examples of QFTs with defects (phase boundaries) of infinite index, extending the family of boundaries in the grasp of [BKLR16].
