The Semiclassical Einstein-Klein-Gordon System: Asymptotic Analysis of Minkowski Spacetime

We establish the linear instability of the semiclassical Einstein-Klein-Gordon system linearised about the Minkowski vacuum spacetime. The proof relies on formulating a forcing problem for both metric and state perturbations within the space of past-compact sections. This geometric framework admits a unique tensor decomposition which, in conjunction with the quantum M{\o}ller operator, enables the decoupling of the linearised system into two distinct Cauchy problems. Consequently, the metric perturbations are shown to be governed by a higher-order, nonlocal hyperbolic partial differential equation. By relegating the nonlocal contributions to subleading order, we establish the well-posedness of this forcing problem. Furthermore, we provide a rigorous asymptotic analysis for physically admissible choices of the renormalisation constants. We prove that the system exhibits a late-time linear instability: the metric perturbations grow exponentially, bounded strictly by a universal scale H, thereby indicating a quantum backreaction-driven transition toward a de Sitter cosmological spacetime. Provided the parameters governing the system are restricted to a physically relevant regime, this universal scale is compatible with the measured expansion of our universe.

The Cauchy Problem for Symmetric Hyperbolic Systems with Nonlocal Potentials

In this paper, we investigate the initial value problem for symmetric hyperbolic systems on globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds with potentials that are both nonlocal in time and space. When the potential is retarded and uniformly bounded in time, we establish well-posedness of the Cauchy problem on a time strip, proving existence, uniqueness, and regularity of solutions. If the potential is not retarded but has only short time range, we show that strong solutions still exist, under the additional assumptions that the uniform bound in time is sufficiently small compared to the range in time and that its kernel decays sufficiently fast in time with respect to the zero-order terms of the system. Furthermore, we present a counterexample demonstrating that when the uniform bound is too large compared to the time range, solutions may fail to exist. As an application, we discuss Maxwell's equations in linear dispersive media on ultrastatic spacetimes, as well as the Dirac equation with nonlocal potential naturally arising in the theory of causal fermion systems. Our paper aims to represent the starting point for a rigorous study for the Cauchy problem for the semiclassical Einstein equations.

Noncommutative Gelfand Duality: the algebraic case

The goal of this paper is to define a notion of non-commutative Gelfand duality. Using techniques from derived algebraic geometry, we show that the category of rings is anti-equivalent to a subcategory of pre-ringed sites, inspired by Grothendieck's work on commutative rings. Our notion of spectrum, although formally reminiscent of the Grothendieck spectrum, is new. Remarkably, an appropriately refined relative version of our spectrum agrees with the Grothendieck spectrum for finitely generated commutative algebras over the complex numbers, among others. This work aims to represent the starting point for a rigorous study of geometric properties of quantum spacetimes.

Notions of Fermionic Entropies of a Causal Fermion System

The fermionic von Neumann entropy, the fermionic entanglement entropy and the fermionic relative entropy are defined for causal fermion systems. Our definition makes use of entropy formulas for quasi-free fermionic states in terms of the reduced one-particle density operator. Our definitions are illustrated in various examples for Dirac spinors in two- and four-dimensional Minkowski space, in the Schwarzschild black hole geometry and for fermionic lattices. We review area laws for the two-dimensional diamond and a three-dimensional spatial region in Minkowski space. The connection is made to the computation of the relative entropy using modular theory.

On boundary conditions for linearised Einstein's equations

We investigate the properties of a fairly large class of boundary conditions for the linearised Einstein equations in the Riemannian setting, ones which generalise the linearised counterpart of boundary conditions proposed by Anderson. Through the prism of the quest to quantise gravitational waves in curved spacetimes, we study their properties from the point of view of ellipticity, gauge invariance, and the existence of a spectral gap.

The Quantization of Maxwell Theory in the Cauchy Radiation Gauge: Hodge Decomposition and Hadamard States

The aim of this paper is to prove the existence of Hadamard states for the Maxwell equations on any globally hyperbolic spacetime. This will be achieved by introducing a new gauge fixing condition, the Cauchy radiation gauge, that will allow to suppress all the unphysical degrees of freedom. The key ingredient for achieving this gauge is a new Hodge decomposition for differential k-forms in Sobolev spaces on complete (possibly non-compact) Riemannian manifolds.

The quantization of Proca fields on globally hyperbolic spacetimes: Hadamard states and M{\o}ller operators

This paper deals with several issues concerning the algebraic quantization of the real Proca field in a globally hyperbolic spacetime and the definition and existence of Hadamard states for that field. In particular, extending previous work, we construct the so-called M\o ller $*$-isomorphism between the algebras of Proca observables on paracausally related spacetimes, proving that the pullback of these isomorphisms preserves the Hadamard property of corresponding quasifree states defined on the two spacetimes. Then, we pull-back a natural Hadamard state constructed on ultrastatic spacetimes of bounded geometry, along this $*$-isomorphism, to obtain a Hadamard state on a general globally hyperbolic spacetime. We conclude the paper, by comparing the definition of a Hadamard state, here given in terms of wavefront set, with the one proposed by Fewster and Pfenning, which makes use of a supplementary Klein-Gordon Hadamard form. We establish an (almost) complete equivalence of the two definitions.

Wick rotation of linearized gravity in Gaussian time and Calder\'on projectors

Motivated by the quantization of linearized gravity, we consider gauge-fixed linearized Einstein equations and their Wick rotation near a Cauchy surface. We show that Calder\'on projectors for the Wick-rotated equations induce Hadamard bi-solutions on the Lorentzian level. On the other hand, we find smoothing obstructions to gauge-invariance and positivity conditions needed in quantization. These obstructions are primarily due to boundary terms arising in the Wick-rotated theory and depend on the boundary conditions.

Global and microlocal aspects of Dirac operators: propagators and Hadamard states

We propose a geometric approach to construct the Cauchy evolution operator for the Lorentzian Dirac operator on Cauchy-compact globally hyperbolic 4-manifolds. We realise the Cauchy evolution operator as the sum of two invariantly defined oscillatory integrals -- the positive and negative Dirac propagators -- global in space and in time, with distinguished complex-valued geometric phase functions. As applications, we relate the Cauchy evolution operators with the Feynman propagator and construct Cauchy surfaces covariances of quasifree Hadamard states.

Paracausal deformations of Lorentzian metrics and M{\o}ller isomorphisms in algebraic quantum field theory

Given a pair of normally hyperbolic operators over (possibily different) globally hyperbolic spacetimes on a given smooth manifold, the existence of a geometric isomorphism, called {\em M{\o}ller operator}, between the space of solutions is studied. This is achieved by exploiting a new equivalence relation in the space of globally hyperbolic metrics, called {\em paracausal relation}. In particular, it is shown that the M{\o}ller operator associated to a pair of paracausally related metrics and normally hyperbolic operators also intertwines the respective causal propagators of the normally hyperbolic operators and it preserves the natural symplectic forms on the space of (smooth) initial data. Finally, the M{\o}ller map is lifted to a $*$-isomorphism between (generally off-shell) $CCR$-algebras. It is shown that the Wave Front set of a Hadamard bidistribution (and of a Hadamard state in particular) is preserved by the pull-back action of this $*$-isomorphism.

M{\o}ller operators and Hadamard states for Dirac fields with MIT boundary conditions

The aim of this paper is to prove the existence of Hadamard states for Dirac fields coupled with MIT boundary conditions on any globally hyperbolic manifold with timelike boundary. This is achieved by introducing a geometric M{\o}ller operator which implements a unitary isomorphism between the spaces of $L^2$ -initial data of particular symmetric systems we call weakly-hyperbolic and which are coupled with admissible boundary conditions. In particular, we show that for Dirac fields with MIT boundary conditions, this isomorphism can be lifted to a $*$-isomorphism between the algebras of Dirac fields and that any Hadamard state can be pulled back along this $*$-isomorphism preserving the singular structure of its two-point distribution.

The Cauchy problem of the Lorentzian Dirac operator with APS boundary conditions

We consider the classical Dirac operator on globally hyperbolic manifolds with timelike boundary and show well-posedness of the Cauchy initial-boundary value problem coupled to APS-boundary conditions. This is achieved by deriving suitable energy estimates, which play a fundamental role in establishing uniqueness and existence of weak solutions. Finally, by introducing suitable mollifier operators, we study the differentiability of the solutions. For obtaining smoothness we need additional technical conditions.

Injective tensor products in strict deformation quantization

The aim of this paper is two-fold. Firstly we provide necessary and sufficient criteria for the existence of a strict deformation quantization of algebraic tensor products of Poisson algebras, and secondly, we discuss the existence of products of KMS states. As an application, we discuss the correspondence between quantum and classical Hamiltonians in spin systems and we provide a relation between the resolvent of Sch\"odinger operators for non-interacting many-particle systems and quantization maps.

On the Cauchy problem for Friedrichs systems on globally hyperbolic manifolds with timelike boundary

In this paper, the Cauchy problem for a Friedrichs system on a globally hyperbolic manifold with a timelike boundary is investigated. By imposing admissible boundary conditions, the existence and the uniqueness of strong solutions are shown. Furthermore, if the Friedrichs system is hyperbolic, the Cauchy problem is proved to be well-posed in the sense of Hadamard. Finally, examples of Friedrichs systems with admissible boundary conditions are provided. Keywords: symmetric hyperbolic systems, symmetric positive systems, admissible boundary conditions, Dirac operator, normally hyperbolic operator, Klein-Gordon operator, heat operator, reaction-diffusion operator, globally hyperbolic manifolds with timelike boundary.

Intertwining operators for symmetric hyperbolic systems on globally hyperbolic manifolds

In this paper, a geometric process to compare solutions of symmetric hyperbolic systems on (possibly different) globally hyperbolic manifolds is realized via a family of intertwining operators. By fixing a suitable parameter, it is shown that the resulting intertwining operator preserves Hermitian forms naturally defined on the space of homogeneous solutions. As an application, we investigate the action of the intertwining operators in the context of algebraic quantum field theory. In particular, we provide a new geometric proof for the existence of the so-called Hadamard states on globally hyperbolic manifolds.

On the uniqueness of invariant states

Given an abelian group G endowed with a T-pre-symplectic form, we assign to it a symplectic twisted group *-algebra W_G and then we provide criteria for the uniqueness of states invariant under the ergodic action of the symplectic group of automorphism. As an application, we discuss the notion of natural states in quantum abelian Chern-Simons theory.
