The well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the Dirac operator on globally hyperbolic manifolds with timelike boundary

We consider the Dirac operator on globally hyperbolic manifolds with timelike boundary and show well-posedness of the Cauchy initial-boundary value problem coupled to MIT-boundary conditions. This is achieved by transforming the problem locally into a symmetric positive hyperbolic system, proving existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and then using local methods developed by Lax, Phillips and Rauch, Massey to show smoothness of the solutions. Our proof actually works for a slightly more general class of local boundary conditions.

The Fermionic Signature Operator in De Sitter Spacetime

The fermionic projector state is a distinguished quasi-free state for the algebra of Dirac fields in a globally hyperbolic spacetime. We construct and analyze it in the four-dimensional de Sitter spacetime, both in the closed and in the flat slicing. In the latter case we show that the mass oscillation properties do not hold due to boundary effects. This is taken into account in a so-called mass decomposition. The involved fermionic signature operator defines a fermionic projector state. In the case of a closed slicing, we construct the fermionic signature operator and show that the ensuing state is maximally symmetric and of Hadamard form, thus coinciding with the counterpart for spinors of the Bunch-Davies state.

Invariant states on noncommutative tori

For any number $h$ such that $\hbar:=h/2π$ is irrational and any skew-symmetric, non-degenerate bilinear form $σ:\mathbb{Z}^{2g}\times \mathbb{Z}^{2g} \to \mathbb{Z}$, let be $\mathcal{A}^h_{g,σ}$ be the twisted group $*$-algebra $\mathbb{C}[\mathbb{Z}^{2g}]$ and consider the ergodic group of $*$-automorphisms of $\mathcal{A}^h_{g,σ}$ induced by the action of the symplectic group Sp$(\mathbb{Z}^{2g},σ)$. We show that the only Sp$(\mathbb{Z}^{2g},σ)$-invariant state on $\mathcal{A}^h_{g,σ}$ is the trace state $τ$.

A new class of Fermionic Projectors: Møller operators and mass oscillation properties

Recently, a new functional analytic construction of quasi-free states for a self-dual CAR algebra has been presented in \cite{Felix2}. This method relies on the so-called strong mass oscillation property. We provide an example where this requirement is not satisfied, due to the nonvanishing trace of the solutions of the Dirac equation on the horizon of Rindler space, and we propose a modification of the construction in order to weaken this condition. Finally, a connection between the two approaches is built.

The Fermionic Signature Operator and Quantum States in Rindler Space-Time

The fermionic signature operator is constructed in Rindler space-time. It is shown to be an unbounded self-adjoint operator on the Hilbert space of solutions of the massive Dirac equation. In two-dimensional Rindler space-time, we prove that the resulting fermionic projector state coincides with the Fulling-Rindler vacuum. Moreover, the fermionic signature operator gives a covariant construction of general thermal states, in particular of the Unruh state. The fermionic signature operator is shown to be well-defined in asymptotically Rindler space-times. In four-dimensional Rindler space-time, our construction gives rise to new quantum states.

Wavefront sets and polarizations on supermanifolds

In this paper we develop the foundations for microlocal analysis on supermanifolds. Making use of pseudodifferential operators on supermanifolds as introduced by Rempel and Schmitt, we define a suitable notion of super wavefront set for superdistributions which generalizes Dencker's polarization sets for vector-valued distributions to supergeometry. In particular, our super wavefront sets detect polarization information of the singularities of superdistributions. We prove a refined pullback theorem for superdistributions along supermanifold morphisms, which as a special case establishes criteria when two superdistributions may be multiplied. As an application of our framework, we study the singularities of distributional solutions of a supersymmetric field theory.

Non-existence of natural states for Abelian Chern-Simons theory

We give an elementary proof that Abelian Chern-Simons theory, described as a functor from oriented surfaces to C*-algebras, does not admit a natural state. Non-existence of natural states is thus not only a phenomenon of quantum field theories on Lorentzian manifolds, but also of topological quantum field theories formulated in the algebraic approach.

The Fermionic Projector in a Time-Dependent External Potential: Mass Oscillation Property and Hadamard States

We give a non-perturbative construction of the fermionic projector in Minkowski space coupled to a time-dependent external potential which is smooth and decays faster than quadratically for large times. The weak and strong mass oscillation properties are proven. We show that the integral kernel of the fermionic projector is of Hadamard form, provided that the time integral of the spatial sup-norm of the potential satisfies a suitable bound. This gives rise to an algebraic quantum field theory of Dirac fields in an external potential with a distinguished pure quasi-free Hadamard state.

Radiative observables for linearized gravity on asymptotically flat spacetimes and their boundary induced states

We discuss the quantization of linearized gravity on globally hyperbolic, asymptotically flat, vacuum spacetimes and the construction of distinguished states which are both of Hadamard form and invariant under the action of all bulk isometries. The procedure, we follow, consists of looking for a realization of the observables of the theory as a sub-algebra of an auxiliary, non-dynamical algebra constructed on future null infinity $\Im^+$. The applicability of this scheme is tantamount to proving that a solution of the equations of motion for linearized gravity can be extended smoothly to $\Im^+$. This has been claimed to be possible provided that a suitable gauge fixing condition, first written by Geroch and Xanthopoulos, is imposed. We review its definition critically showing that there exists a previously unnoticed obstruction in its implementation leading us to introducing the concept of radiative observables. These constitute an algebra for which a Hadamard state induced from null infinity and invariant under the action of all spacetime isometries exists and it is explicitly constructed.
