Spontaneous CP Violation, Small Instanton and Invisible Axion

I propose a variant invisible axion model of spontaneous CP violation at the electroweak scale without CP domain wall and `strong CP' problems. Both large size QCD and small size non-QCD instantons break CP and Peccei-Quinn symmetries, and render cosmologically harmful CP domain walls unstable. The decaying epoch depends on size of small instanton effects, and is around 100 eV if the current neutron electric dipole moment bound is maximally saturated. The model satisfies constraints from primordial D and He photo-dissociation and black hole formation, while producing cosmologically interesting size of gravitational waves and galaxy-scale density perturbations.

Nonperturbative Stability of Supergravity and Superstring Vacua

We investigate the possibility of false vacuum decay in $N=1$ supergravity theories. By establishing a Bogomol'nyi bound for the energy density stored in the domain wall of the $O(4)$ invariant bubble, we show that supersymmetric vacua remain absolutely stable against false vacuum decay into another supersymmetric vacuum. This conforms with and completes the previous perturbative analysis of Weinberg. Implications for dynamical supersymmetry breaking and decompactification instabilities in superstring theory are discussed. In addition, we show that there are no compact static spherical domain walls.

Spontaneous CP Violation at the Electroweak Scale

Utilizing results on the cosmology of anomalous discrete symmetries we show that models of spontaneous CP violation can in principle avoid the domain wall problem first pointed out by Zel'dovich, Kobzarev and Okun. A small but nonzero $θ_{QCD}$ explicitly breaks CP and can lift the degeneracy of the two CP conjugate vacua through nonperturbative effects so that the domain walls become unstable, but survive to cosmologically interesting epochs. We explore the viability of spontaneous CP violation in the context of two Higgs models, and find that the invisible axion solution of the strong CP problem cannot be implemented without further extensions of the Higgs sector.

How Efficient Is The Langacker-Pi Mechanism of Monopole Annihilation?

We investigate the dynamics of monopole annihilation by the Langacker-Pi mechanism. We find taht considerations of causality, flux-tube energetics and the friction from Aharonov-Bohm scatteering suggest that the monopole annihilation is most efficient if electromagnetism is spontaneously broken at the lowest temperature ($T_{em} \approx 10^6 GeV$) consistent with not having the monopoles dominate the energy density of the universe.

Static Domain Walls in N=1 Supergravity

We study supersymmetric domain walls in N=1 supergravity theories, including those with modular-invariant superpotentials arising in superstring compactifications. Such domain walls are shown to saturate the Bogomol'nyi bound of wall energy per unit area. We find \sl static \rm and \sl reflection asymmetric \rm domain wall solutions of the self-duality equations for the metric and the matter fields. Our result establishes a new class of domain walls beyond those previously classified. As a corollary, we define a precise notion of vacuum degeneracy in the supergravity theories. In addition, we found examples of global supersymmetric domain walls that do not have an analog when gravity is turned on. This result establishes that in the case of extended topological defects gravity plays a crucial, nontrivial role.
