Quintessential Axions from a New Confining Force

Almost massless mesons created at the condensation scale of extra nonabelian gauge group can be candidates of dark energy source. This can be another motivation for introducing an additional confining force.

$L_μ-L_τ$ effects to quarks and leptons from flavor unification

In the family grand unification models (fGUTs), we propose that gauge U(1)'s beyond the minimal GUT gauge group are family gauge symmetries. For the symmetry $L_μ-L_τ$, i.e. $Q_{2}-Q_{3}$ in our case, to be useful for the LHC anomaly, we discuss an SU(9) fGUT and also present an example in Georgi's SU(11) fGUT.

Tetrahedral Symmetry A$_{\bf 4}$ in Anti-SU(5) GUT

We construct a flavor model in an anti-SU(5) GUT with a tetrahedral symmetry $A_4$. We choose a basis where $Q_{text{em}}=-\frac13$ quarks and charged leptons are already mass eigenstates. This choice is possible from the $A_4$ symmetry. Then, matter representation $\overline{10}_{-1}^{\rm\, matter}$ contains both a quark doublet and a heavy neutrino $N$, which enables us to use the $A_4$ symmetry to both $Q_{text{em}}=+\frac23$ quark masses and neutrino masses (through the see-saw via $N$). This is made possible because the anti-SU(5) breaking is achieved by the Higgs fields transforming as anti-symmetric representations of SU(5), $\overline{10}_{-1}^H\oplus 10_{+1}^H$, reducing the rank-5 anti-SU(5) group down to the rank-4 standard model group \smg. For possible mass matrices, the $A_4$ symmetry predictions on mass matrices at field theory level are derived. Finally, an illustration from string compactification is presented.

Jarlskog determinant and data on flavor matrices

The essences of the weak CP violation, the quark and lepton Jarlskog invariants, are determined toward future model buildings beyond the Standard Model (SM). The equivalence of two calculations of Jarlskog invariants gives a bound on the CP phase in some parametrization. Satisfying the unitarity condition, we obtain the CKM and MNS matrices from the experimental data, and present the results in matrix forms. The Jarlskog determinant $J^q$ in the quark sector is found to be $\sim 3.11\times 10^{-5}|\sin\delks|$ while $J^\ell$ in the leptonic sector is $\sim 2.96\times 10^{-2}|\sin\delksl|$ in the normal hierarchy parametrization.

Leptonic CP violation in flipped SU(5) GUT from $Z_{12-I}$ Orbifold Compactification

We obtain a phenomenologically acceptable PMNS matrix in a flipped SU(5) model inspired by the compactification of heterotic string $E_8\times E_8'$. To analyze the Jarlskog determinant efficiently, we include the simple Kim-Seo form for the Pontecorbo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix. We also noted that $|δ_{\rm PMNS}|\lesssim 64^{\rm o}$ for the normal hierarchy of neutrino masses with the PDG book parametrization.

Warped $AdS_3$ black hole in minimal massive gravity with first order formalism

We obtain a black hole solution of minimal massive gravity theory with Maxwell and electromagnetic Chern-Simons terms using the first order formalism. This black hole solution can be translated into the spacelike warped $AdS_3$ black hole solution with some parameters' conditions changing their coordinates system into a Schwarzschild one. Applying the Wald formalism to this theory with the first order formalism, we also find out the entropy, mass, and angular momentum of this black hole solution satisfies the first law of black hole thermodynamics. Under the assumption that minimal massive gravity theory with suitable asymptotically warped $AdS_3$ boundary conditions is holographically dual to a two dimensional boundary conformal field theory, we find appropriate central charges by using the relations between entropy of this black hole and the Cardy formula in dual conformal field theory described by left and right moving central charges and temperatures.

Mass and angular momentum of black holes in 3D gravity theories with first order formalism

We apply the Wald formalism to obtain masses and angular momenta of black holes in three dimensional gravity theories using the first order formalism. Wald formalism suggests that the entropy of a black hole can be defined by an integration of a conserved charge on the bifurcation horizon, and mass and angular momentum of a black hole as an integration of some charge variation form at spatial infinity. The action of three dimensional gravity theories can be represented by a form including some auxiliary fields. As well-known examples we have calculated masses and angular momenta of some black holes in topologically massive gravity and new massive gravity theories using the first order formalism. We have also calculated mass and angular momentum of BTZ black hole and new type black hole in minimal massive gravity theory with the action represented by the first order formalism. We have also calculated the entropy and central charges of new type black hole. According to $AdS/CFT$ correspondence we suggest that the left and right moving temperatures should be equal to the Hawking temperature in the case of new type black hole in minimal massive gravity.

Axion energy density, bottle neck period, and $\barθ$ ratios between early and late times

The possibility of the "invisible" axion being cold dark matter relies on the acceptable estimates of the current axion energy density. The estimate depends on the nature of QCD phase transition at a few hundred MeV and the evolution of the misalignment angle $\barθ$. The onset of $\barθ$ oscillation undergoes a bottleneck period which occurred during the QCD phase transition. In addition, the anharmonic coupling of order $a^4$ affects the $\barθ$ evolution. From the time that the anharmonic effect is negligible, it is rather simple to calculate the ratio of $\barθ$'s between early and late times. For multi GHz oscillations, the current age of the Universe needs at least $10^{27}$ oscillations which limits an exact calculation of $\barθ$ . We establish a stepwise approximation for numerical solutions of the differential equation and obtain $\barθ_{\rm now}/\barθ_f\approx 3\times 10^{-17}$ for $m_a\simeq 10^{-4}\,$eV, where $t_f$ is the first time that the full hadronic phase (after the QCD phase transition) was established.

Fate of global symmetries in the Universe: QCD axion, quintessential axion and trans-Planckian inflaton decay-constant

Pseudoscalars appearing in particle physics are reviewd systematically. From the fundamental point of view at an ultra-violat completed theory, they can be light if they are realized as pseudo-Goldstone bosons of some spontaneously broken global symmetries. The spontaneous breaking scale is parametrized by the decay constant $f$. The global symmetry is defined by the lowest order terms allowed in the effective theory consistent with the gauge symmetry in question. Since any global symmetry is known to be broken at least by quantum gravitational effects, all pseudoscalars should be massive. The mass scale is determined by $f$ and the explicit breaking terms $ΔV$ in the effective potential and also anomaly terms $ΔΛ^4_G$ for some non-Abelian gauge groups $G$. The well-known example by non-Abelian gauge group breaking is the potential for the "invisible" QCD axion, via the Peccei-Quinn symmetry, which constitutes a major part of this review. Even if there is no breaking terms from gauge anomalies, there can be explicit breaking terms $ΔV$ in the potential in which case the leading term suppressed by $f$ determines the pseudoscalar mass scale. If the breaking term is extremely small and the decay constant is trans-Planckian, the corresponding pseudoscalar can be a candidate for a `quintessential axion'. In general, $(ΔV)^{1/4}$ is considered to be smaller than $f$, and hence the pseudo-Goldstone boson mass scales are considered to be smaller than the decay constants. In such a case, the potential of the pseudo-Goldstone boson at the grand unification scale is sufficiently flat near the top of the potential that it can be a good candidate for an inflationary model, which is known as `natural inflation'. We review all these ideas in the bosonic collective motion framework.

The anomalous U(1) global symmetry and flavors from an SU(5) x SU(5)$'$ GUT in $Z_{12-I}$ orbifold compactification

In string compactifications, frequently there appears the anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry which belonged to E8$\times$E8 of the heterotic string. This anomalous U(1) gauge boson obtains mass at the compactification scale, just below $10^{18\,}$GeV, by absorbing one pseudoscalar (corresponding to the model-independent axion) from the second rank anti-symmetric tensor field $B_{MN}$. Below the compactification scale, there results a global symmetry U(1)$_{\rm anom}$ whose charge $Q_{\rm anom}$ is the original gauge U(1) charge. This is the most natural global symmetry, realizing the "invisible" axion. This global symmetry U(1)$_{\rm anom}$ is suitable for a flavor symmetry. In the simplest compactification model with the flipped SU(5) grand unification, we calculate all the low energy parameters in terms of the vacuum expectation values of the standard model singlets.

Hairs of discrete symmetries and gravity

Gauge symmetries are known to be respected by gravity because gauge charges carry flux lines, but global charges do not carry flux lines and are not conserved by gravitational interaction. For discrete symmetries, they are spontaneously broken in the Universe, forming domain walls. Since the realization of discrete symmetries in the Universe must involve the vacuum expectation values of Higgs fields, a string-like configuration (hair) at the intersection of domain walls in the Higgs vacua can be realized. Therefore, we argue that discrete charges are also respected by gravity.

A possible relation between leptogenesis and PMNS phases

We propose a new scenario for baryogenesis through leptogenesis, where the CP phase relevant for leptogenesis is connected directly to the PMNS phase(s) in the light neutrino mixing matrix. The scenario is realized in case only one CP phase appears in the full theory, originating from the complex vacuum expextation value of a standard model singlet field. In order to realize this scheme, the electroweak symmetry is required to be broken during the leptogenesis era and a new loop diagram with an intermediate $W$ boson exchange including the low energy neutrino mixing matrix should play the dominant contribution to the CP violation for leptogenesis. In this letter, we discuss the new basic mechanism, which we call type-II leptogenesis, and give an estimate for maximally reachable baryon asymmetry depending on the PMNS phases.

Unifying CP violations of quark and lepton sectors

A preliminary determination of the Dirac phase in the PMNS matrix is $\dell\approx -\fracπ{2}$. A rather accurately determined Jarlskog invariant $J$ in the CKM matrix is close to the maximum. Since the phases in the CKM and PMNS matrices will be accurately determined in the future, it is an interesting problem to relate these two phases. This can be achieved in a families-unified grand unification if the weak CP violation is introduced spontaneously {\it à la} Froggatt and Nielsen at a high energy scale, where only one meaningful Dirac CP phase appears.

Calculations of resonance enhancement factor in axion-search tube-experiments

It is pointed out that oscillating current density, produced due to the coupling between an external magnetic field and the cosmic axion field, can excite the TM resonant modes inside an open-ended cavity (tube). By systematically solving the field equations of axion-electrodynamics we obtain explicit expressions for the oscillating fields induced inside a cylindrical tube. We calculate the enhancement factor when a resonance condition is met. While the power obtained for TM modes replicates the previous result, we emphasize that the knowledge of explicit field configurations inside a tube opens up new ways to design axion experiments including a recent proposal to detect the induced fields using a superconducting LC circuit. In addition, as an example, we estimate the induced fields in a cylindrical tube in the presence of a static uniform magnetic field applied only to a part of its volume.

Final state interaction phases using data from CP asymmetries

Evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics might be revealed through CP violation. Experimental results from BaBar, Belle, and most recently from LHCb are very interesting in this respect. It is important to calculate various CP violation parameters within the SM. In this Letter, the final state interaction (FSI) phases with the CKM matrix are calculated using the recent experimental results from LHCb on CP violation in B0 and Bs0 meson decays. To obtain the allowed regions of the FSI phases, a simplified form of the Jarlskog determinant of the CKM matrix is used and the CP phase delta close to the maximal value of pi/2 is found. Then, the asymmetry data on B0 and Bs0 from LHCb is used to explore graphically the allowed regions of the FSI phases.

Some properties of the de Sitter black holes in three dimensional spacetime

We investigate the physical properties of the de Sitter spacetime and new type-de Sitter black holes in new massive gravity, a higher derivative gravity theory in three dimensions. We calculate thermodynamic quantities and check that the first law of thermodynamics is satisfied. In particular, we obtain the energies of the de Sitter spacetime and new type-de Sitter black holes from the renormalized Brown-York boundary stress tensor on the Euclidean surfaces at late temporal infinity. We also obtain the quasinormal modes and by using them we find that the entropy spectra are equally spaced via semi-classical quantization.

Thermodynamics from field equations for black holes with multiple horizons

The first law of black hole thermodynamics can be read off from the field equations at the horizon. Until now, for black holes with multiple horizons the field equations only at the outer horizon were employed with a particular constraint. In this paper, however, we suggest that for a black hole with multiple horizons the field equations at the inner horizon as well as the outer horizon should be needed in order to obtain the first law of black hole thermodynamics in general.

Extremal Black Holes and Holographic C-Theorem

We found Bogomol'nyi type of the first order differential equations in three dimensional Einstein gravity and the effective second order ones in new massive gravity when an interacting scalar field is minimally coupled. Using these equations in Einstein gravity, we obtain analytic solutions corresponding to extremally rotating hairy black holes. We also obtain perturbatively extremal black hole solutions in new massive gravity using these lower order differential equations. All these solutions have the anti de-Sitter spaces as their asymptotic geometries and as the near horizon ones. This feature of solutions interpolating two anti de-Sitter spaces leads to the construction of holographic c-theorem in these cases. Since our lower order equations reduce naturally to the well-known equations for domain walls, our results can be regarded as the natural extension of domain walls to more generic cases.
