AdS/BCFT Correspondence for Higher Curvature Gravity: An Example

We consider the effects of higher curvature terms on a holographic dual description of boundary conformal field theory. Specifically, we consider three-dimensional gravity with a specific combination of Ricci tensor square and curvature scalar square, so called, new massive gravity. We show that a boundary entropy and an entanglement entropy are given by similar expression with those of the Einstein gravity case when we introduce an {\it effective} Newton's constant and an {\it effective} cosmological constant. We also show that the holographic g-theorem still holds in this extension, and we give some comments about the central charge dependence of boundary entropy in the holographic construction. In the same way, we consider new type black holes and comment on the boundary profile. Moreover, we reproduce these results through auxiliary field formalism in this specific higher curvature gravity.

Holographic Renormalization and Stress Tensors in New Massive Gravity

We obtain holographically renormalized boundary stress tensors with the emphasis on a special point in the parameter space of three dimensional new massive gravity, using the so-called Fefferman-Graham coordinates with relevant counter terms. Through the linearized equations of motion with a standard prescription, we also obtain correlators among these stress tensors. We argue that the self-consistency of holographic renormalization determines counter terms up to unphysical ambiguities. Using these renormalized stress tensors in Fefferman-Graham coordinates, we obtain the central charges of dual CFT, and mass and angular momentum of some $AdS$ black hole solutions. These results are consistent with the previous ones obtained by other methods. In this study on the Fefferman-Graham expansion of new massive gravity, some aspects of higher curvature gravity are revealed.

Quasi Normal Modes for New Type Black Holes in New Massive Gravity

We obtain the quasi-normal mode frequencies of scalar perturbation on new type black holes in three dimensional new massive gravity. In some special cases, the exact quasi-normal mode frequencies are obtained by solving scalar field equations exactly. On some parameter regions, the highly damped quasi-normal mode frequencies are obtained in an analytic form by the so-called Stokes line method. This study on quasi-normal modes shed some light on the mysterious nature of these black holes. We also comment about AdS/CFT correspondence and the entropy/area spectrum for new type black holes.

Entropy spectra of black holes from resonance modes in scattering by the black holes

Since the Bekenstein's proposal that a black hole has equally spaced area spectrum, the quasinormal modes as the characteristic modes of a black hole have been used in obtaining the horizon area spectrum of the black hole. However, the area spectrum of the Kerr black hole in some previous works was inconsistent with the Bekenstein's proposal. In this paper, noting that black holes can have three types of resonance modes which are quasinormal modes (QNM), total transmission modes (TTM), and total reflection modes (TRM), we propose that all of these modes in highly damped regime should be used in quantizing the black hole. Although the QNM and the TTM of the Kerr black hole give us complicated quantization conditions from the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization of action variable, we find a very simple result from the TRM. It gives equally spaced outer horizon area. Therefore by Bekenstein-Hawking area law we find that the Kerr black hole has universal behavior of the equally spaced entropy spectrum. With the same argument, we find that the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole also has equally spaced entropy spectrum.

Mass and Angular momentum of Black Holes in New Massive Gravity

We obtain mass and angular momentum of black holes as conserved charges in three dimensional new massive gravity, after presenting the explicit expression for the potential of the conserved charges. This confirms the expression of those charges obtained in several ways, in particular through AdS/CFT correspondence, and shows us that the first law of black hole thermodynamics is valid in these black holes. We also comment about conserved charges in new type black holes with the emphasis on the AdS/CFT correspondence as guiding principle.

AdS Black Hole Solutions in the Extended New Massive Gravity

We have obtained (warped) AdS black hole solutions in the three dimensional extended new massive gravity. We investigate some properties of black holes and obtain central charges of the two dimensional dual CFT. To obtain the central charges, we use the relation between entropy and temperature according to the AdS/CFT dictionary. For AdS black holes, one can also use the central charge function formalism which leads to the same results.

Quantization of horizon areas of the Kerr black hole

Since the Bekenstein's proposal that a black hole has equally spaced area spectrum, the quasinormal modes as the characteristic modes of a black hole have been used in obtaining the horizon area spectrum of the black hole. However, the area spectrum of the Kerr black hole in some previous works was inconsistent with the Bekenstein's proposal. In this paper, we notice that the Kerr black hole has three types of resonance modes which are quasinormal modes (QNM), total transmission modes (TTM), and total reflection modes (TRM). All of these resonances represent highly damped oscillations and only depend on the black hole parameters which are mass, charge and angular momentum of the black hole. We propose that all of these modes should be used in quantizing the black hole. With all these modes, we find that both the inner and outer horizon areas of the Kerr black hole are equally spaced. Similar behavior is also found in the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole.

Area spectra versus entropy spectra in black holes in topologically massive gravity

We consider the area and entropy spectra of black holes in topologically massive gravity with gravitational Chern-Simons term. The examples we consider are the BTZ black hole and the warped AdS black hole. For the non-rotating BTZ black hole, the area and entropy spectra are equally spaced and independent of the coupling constant $\v$ of the Chern-Simons term. For the rotating BTZ black hole case, the spectra of the inner and outer horizon areas are not equally spaced in general and dependent of the coupling constant $\v$. However the entropy spectrum is equally spaced and independent of the coupling constant $\v$. For the warped AdS black holes for $\v >1$ by using the quasinormal modes obtained without imposing the boundary condition at radial infinity we find again that the entropy spectrum is equally spaced and independent of the coupling constant $\v$, while the spectra of the inner and outer horizon areas are not equally spaced and dependent of the coupling constant $\v$. Our result implies that the entropy spectrum has a universal behavior regardless of the presence of the gravitational Chern-Simons term, and therefore it implies that the entropy is more `fundamental' than the horizon area.

Kähler moduli inflation and WMAP7

Inflationary potentials are investigated for specific models in type IIB string theory via flux compactification. As concrete models, we investigate several cases where the internal spaces are weighted projective spaces. The models we consider have two, three, or four Kähler moduli. The Kähler moduli play a role of inflaton fields and we consider the cases where only one of the moduli behaves as the inflaton field. For the cases with more than two moduli, we choose the diagonal basis for the expression of the Calabi-Yau volume, which can be written down as a function of four-cycle. With the combination of multiple moduli, we can express the multi-dimensional problem as an effective one-dimensional problem. In the large volume scenario, the potentials of these three models turn out to be of the same type. By taking the specific limit of the relation between the moduli and the volume, the potentials are reduced to simpler ones which induce inflation. As a toy model we first consider the simple potential. We calculate the slow roll parameters $ε$, $η$ and $ξ$ for each inflationary potential. Then, we check whether the potentials give reasonable spectral indices $n_s$ and their running $α_s$'s by comparing with the recently released seven-year WMAP data. For both models, we see reasonable spectral indices for the number of e-folding $47<N_e<61$. Conversely, by inserting the observed seven-year WMAP data, we see that the potential of the toy model gives requisite number of e-folds while the potential of the Kähler moduli gives much smaller number of e-folding. Finally, we see that two models do not produce reasonable values of the running of the spectral index.

Area spectra of the rotating BTZ black hole from quasinormal modes

Following Bekenstein's suggestion that the horizon area of a black hole should be quantized, the discrete spectrum of the horizon area has been investigated in various ways. By considering the quasinormal mode of a black hole, we obtain the transition frequency of the black hole, analogous to the case of a hydrogen atom, in the semiclassical limit. According to Bohr's correspondence principle, this transition frequency at large quantum number is equal to classical oscillation frequency. For the corresponding classical system of periodic motion with this oscillation frequency, an action variable is identified and quantized via Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization, from which the quantized spectrum of the horizon area is obtained. This method can be applied for black holes with discrete quasinormal modes. As an example, we apply the method for the both non-rotating and rotating BTZ black holes and obtain that the spectrum of the horizon area is equally spaced and independent of the cosmological constant for both cases.

Hawking radiation from covariant anomalies in 2+1 dimensional black holes

In an insightful approach, Robinson and Wilczek proposed that Hawking radiation can be obtained as the compensation of a breakdown of general covariance and gauge invariance and the radiation is a black body radiation at Hawking temperature. We apply this method to two types of black holes in three dimensional spacetime, which share the general form of the metric in that the $tt$ component of the metric is not inverse of the $rr$ component of the metric. First one is the warped $AdS_3$ black hole in three dimensional topologically massive gravity with negative cosmological constant, and second one is the charged rotating black hole in three dimensions.

Behavior of tachyon in string cosmology based on gauged WZW model

We investigate a string theoretic cosmological model in the context of the gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten model. Our model is based on a product of non-compact coset space and a spectator flat space; $[SL(2,R)/U(1)]_k \times {\bf R}^2$. We extend the formerly studied semiclassical consideration with infinite Kac-Moody level $k$ to a finite one. In this case, the tachyon field appears in the effective action, and we solve the Einstein equation to determine the behavior of tachyon as a function of time. We find that tachyon field dominates over dilaton field in early times. In particular, we consider the energy conditions of the matter fields consisting of the dilaton and the tachyon which affect the initial singularity. We find that not only the strong energy but also the null energy condition is violated.

The Entropy Function for the extremal Kerr-(anti-)de Sitter Black Holes

Based on the entropy function formalism, we consider the extremal Kerr-(anti-)de Sitter black holes in 4-dimensions. Solving differential equations exactly, which are obtained by extremizing the entropy function, we find agreement of the result with Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. Concerning the higher derivative corrections, we extend the computation to the case with Gauss-Bonnet term.

The Entropy Function for the Black Holes of Nariai Class

Based on the fact that the near horizon geometry of the extremal Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes is Nariai geometry, we define the black holes of Nariai class as the configuration whose near-horizon geometry is factorized as two dimensional de Sitter space-time and some compact topology, that is Nariai geometry. We extend the entropy function formalism to the case of the black holes of Nariai class. The conventional entropy function (for the extremal black holes) is defined as Legendre transformation of Lagrangian density, thus the `Routhian density', over two dimensional anti-de Sitter. As for the black holes of Nariai class, it is defined as {\em minus} `Routhian density' over two dimensional de Sitter space-time. We found an exact agreement of the result with Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. The higher order corrections are nontrivial only when the space-time dimension is over four, that is, $d>4$. There is a subtlety as regards the temperature of the black holes of Nariai class. We show that in order to be consistent with the near horizon geometry, the temperature should be non-vanishing despite the extremality of the black holes.

Non-supersymmetric Attractor with the Cosmological Constant

As a test for the non-supersymmetric attractor mechanism, we consider extremal Reissner-Nordström-(anti-)de Sitter black holes. Based on the simple observation that the near-horizon geometry of a generic extremal black hole contains two-dimensional anti-de Sitter factor even in the presence of the positive cosmological constant, we apply Ashoke Sen's entropy function method to compute the entropy of these black holes. We find the results which exactly agree with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. We also obtain the constant higher-order correction to the entropy due to the Gauss-Bonnet term.

Living Near de Sitter Bubble Walls

We study various bubble solutions in string/M theories obtained by double Wick rotations of (non-)extremal brane configurations. Typically, the geometry interpolates de Sitter space-time times non-compact extra-dimensional space in the near-bubble wall region and the asymptotic flat Minkowski space-time. These bubble solutions provide nice background geometries reconciling string/M theories with de Sitter space-time. For the application of these solutions to cosmology, we consider multi-bubble solutions and find landscapes of varying cosmological constant. Double Wick rotation in string/M theories, used in this paper, introduces imaginary higher-form fields. Rather than regard these fields as classical pathologies, we interpret them as semi-classical decay processes of de Sitter vacuum via the production of spherical branes. We speculate on the possibility of solving the cosmological constant problem making use of the condensation of the spherical membranes.

Tests of Quantum Gravity via Generalized Uncertainty Principle

In this paper we propose a way of determining the subleading corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking black hole entropy by considering a modified generalized uncertainty principle with two parameters. In the context of modified generalized uncertainty principle, coefficients of the correction terms of black hole entropy are written in terms of combination of the parameters. We also calculate corrections to the Stefan-Boltzman law of Hawking radiation corresponding to modified generalized uncertainty principle. By comparing the entropy with one from black holes in string theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau manifold, we point out that the topological information of the compactified space can not easily be related to the parameters in modified generalized uncertainty principle.

Decays of Four Intersecting Fluxbranes

We consider decays of four intersecting fluxbranes which are obtained by considering a higher dimensional Kerr blackhole with four angular momentum parameters, which is the maximum number of angular momentum parameters in string/M-theory. As a result of the intersection, we get lower dimensional fluxbranes. Since generic magnetic fields break all supersymmetries, the resulting fluxbranes are unstable and will decay. Just as a single fluxbrane decays into the nucleation of spherical D6-branes; the intersecting ones decay into the nucleation of lower dimensional spherical branes. Contrary to a single fluxbrane case, the decay of four intersecting fluxbranes has additional decay channels. We also calculate the corresponding Euclidean action to obtain the decay rates. Although the action cannot be explicitly and simply written in terms of the magnetic parameters, we can extract some interesting results by taking various limits of the magnetic parameters.
