A Highly Parallel FPGA Implementation of Sparse Neural Network Training

We demonstrate an FPGA implementation of a parallel and reconfigurable architecture for sparse neural networks, capable of on-chip training and inference. The network connectivity uses pre-determined, structured sparsity to significantly reduce complexity by lowering memory and computational requirements. The architecture uses a notion of edge-processing, leading to efficient pipelining and parallelization. Moreover, the device can be reconfigured to trade off resource utilization with training time to fit networks and datasets of varying sizes. The combined effects of complexity reduction and easy reconfigurability enable significantly greater exploration of network hyperparameters and structures on-chip. As proof of concept, we show implementation results on an Artix-7 FPGA.

SpRRAM: A Predefined Sparsity Based Memristive Neuromorphic Circuit for Low Power Application

In this paper, we propose an efficient predefined structured sparsity-based ex-situ training framework for a hybrid CMOS-memristive neuromorphic hardware for deep neural network to significantly lower the power consumption and computational complexity and improve scalability. The structure is verified on a wide range of datasets including MNIST handwritten recognition, breast cancer prediction, and mobile health monitoring. The results of this study show that compared to its fully connected version, the proposed structure provides significant power reduction while maintaining high classification accuracy.

A Question-Focused Multi-Factor Attention Network for Question Answering

Neural network models recently proposed for question answering (QA) primarily focus on capturing the passage-question relation. However, they have minimal capability to link relevant facts distributed across multiple sentences which is crucial in achieving deeper understanding, such as performing multi-sentence reasoning, co-reference resolution, etc. They also do not explicitly focus on the question and answer type which often plays a critical role in QA. In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end question-focused multi-factor attention network for answer extraction. Multi-factor attentive encoding using tensor-based transformation aggregates meaningful facts even when they are located in multiple sentences. To implicitly infer the answer type, we also propose a max-attentional question aggregation mechanism to encode a question vector based on the important words in a question. During prediction, we incorporate sequence-level encoding of the first wh-word and its immediately following word as an additional source of question type information. Our proposed model achieves significant improvements over the best prior state-of-the-art results on three large-scale challenging QA datasets, namely NewsQA, TriviaQA, and SearchQA.
