Measuring Leaf Chlorophyll Concentration from Its Color: A Way in Monitoring Environment Change to Plantations

Leaf colors of a plant can be used to identify stress level due to its adaptation to environmental change. For most leaves green-related colors are sourced from chlorophyll a and b. Chlorophyll concentration is normally measured using a spectrophotometer in laboratory. In some remote observation places, it is impossible to collect the leaves, preserve them, and bring them to laboratory to measure their chlorophyll content. Based on this need, measurement of chlorophyll content is observed through its color. Using CIE chromaticity diagram leaf color information in RGB is transformed into wavelength (in nm). Paddy seed with variety name IR-64 is used in observation during its vegetation stage t (age of 0-10 days). Light exposure time τ is chosen as environmental change, which normally should be about 12 hours/day, is varied (0-12 hours/day). Each day sample from different exposure time is taken, its color is recorded using HP Deskjet 1050 scanner with 1200 dpi, and its chlorophyll content is obtained from absorption spectrum measured using Campspec M501 Single Beam UV/Vis Spectrophotometer after it is rinsed in 85 % acetone solution and the information from the spectrum is calculated using Arnon method. It has been observed that average wavelength of leaf color λavg is decreased from 570.55 nm to 566.01 nm as is measured for t = 1 - 10 days with τ = 9 hours/day, but chlorophyll concentration C is increased from 0.015 g/l to 3.250 g/l and from 0.000 g/l to 0.774 g/l for chlorophyll a and b, respectively. Other value of τ gives similar results. Based on these results an empirical relation between concentration of chlorophyll a Cc-a and its wavelength λavg can be formulated.

An Observation of a Circular Motion using Ordinary Appliances: Train Toy, Digital Camera, and Android based Smartphone

Using a digital camera (Sony DSC-S75) in its video mode and a smartphone (Samsung GT-N700) equipped with an acceleration sensor, observation of a uniform circular motion of a toy train (Thomas & Friends, Player World, CCF No. 2277-13) is conducted. From the first observation average centripetal acceleration about 0.154 m/s2 is obtained, while the second gives 0.350 m/s2 of average centripetal acceleration by assuming ideal condition, where measured accelerations in z direction is not interpreted.

Modeling Of Blood Vessel Constriction In 2-D Case Using Molecular Dynamics Method

Blood vessel constriction is simulated with particle-based method using a molecular dynamics authoring software known as Molecular Workbench (WM). Blood flow and vessel wall, the only components considered in constructing a blood vessel, are all represented in particle form with interaction potentials: Lennard-Jones potential, push-pull spring potential, and bending spring potential. Influence of medium or blood plasma is accommodated in plasma viscosity through Stokes drag force. It has been observed that pressure p is increased as constriction c is increased. Leakage of blood vessel starts at 80 % constriction, which shows existence of maximum pressure that can be overcome by vessel wall.

Response of a DC RC circuit in series embedded with a rotating varco

Response in electric potensial $U$ from a DC RC circuit in series has been obtained by varying the capacitance of the capacitor $C$. Variation of the capacitance begins at $t_0 > 0$. Alternating response is observed when the periode of change of capacitance in the same order as $τ= RC$, which is held constant for $t < t_0$ and varied in triangle form for $t > t_0$.

Two dimension porous media reconstruction using granular model under influence of gravity

Modeling of pores generation in 2-D with granular grains using molecular dynamics method is reported in this work. Grains with certain diameter distribution are let falling due to gravity. Three configurations (larger diameter on top, smaller diameter on top, and mixed) and two kinds of mixture (same grains density and same grains mass) are used in the simulation. Mixture with heterogen density gives higher porosity than the homogen one for higher initial height, but change into opposite condition for lower initial height.

Procedure to produce discretized path composed by semi-circle and straigth sub-paths

Some problems founds in teaching physics related to curved paths that are unfortunately only described as illustration. A simple way to introduce the path is presented, which can help students to test their concept numerically. The procedure is limited into semi-circle and straight sub-paths. Smaller discretizing width $Δs$ gives better form of the produced path.

Competition between Thickness and Electrical Conditioning Influence in Enhancing Giant Magnetoresistance Ratio for NiCoFe/Alq3/NiCoFe Spin Valve

Spacer thickness and electrical conditioning have their own influence in enhancing giant magnetoresistance (GMR) ratio. At some condition one factor can override the other as reported by experiment results. An empiric model about competition about these two factors is discussed in this work. Comparison from experiment results to validate the model are also shown and explained. A formulation is proposed to extend the existing one that now accommodates both spacer thickness and electrical conditioning in one form.

2-D Granular Model of Composite Elasticity using Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Composite of two kinds of grains is modeled in two-dimension and the elasticity is calculated using molecular dynamics method implementing Gear predictor-corrector of fifth order. It has been observed that same composite concentration can be represented by several configurations of the two kinds of grains. Simulation results show a peak or maximum value of a parameter proportional to Young's modulus, which quantitatively agrees with reported experiment results. Ratio of used in simulation has influenced average value of the mentioned parameter monotonically, it is increasing as the ratio increasing.

Failure of Numerical modeling of 3-D Position Reconstruction from 3-Axial Planar Spiral Coil Sensor Sensitivity due to Existence of Quadratic Terms

A sensitivity profile of a planar spiral coil sensor (PSCS) is proposed and is used to generate the relation of 3-D position of object observed using three PSCSs, one in each x, y, and z axis to the sensors response. A numerical procedure using self consistent field-like method to reconstruct the real position of observed object from sensor sensitivity is presented and the results are discussed. Unfortunately, the procedure fails to approach the desired results due to the existence of quadratic terms.

Giant Magnetoresistance Effect in Organic Material and Its Potential for Magnetic Sensor

Giant magnetoresistance (GMR) material has great potential as next generation magnetic field sensing devices, have magnetic properties and high electrical potential to be developed into various applications such as: magnetic field sensor measurements, current measurements, linear and rotational position sensor, data storage, head recording, and non-volatile magnetic random access memory (MRAM). Today, the new GMR materials based on organic material obtained after allowing for Organic Magnetoresistance (OMAR) was found in OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes). This organic material is used as a spacer layer in GMR devices with spin-valve structures. Traditionally, metals and semiconductors are used as a spacer layer in spin-valve. However, several factors such as spin scattering caused by large atoms of the spacer material and the interface scattering of ferromagnetic with a spacer, will limit the efficiency of spin-valve. In this paper, we describe a new GMR materials based on organic material that we have developed.

A Classical Approach in Simple Nuclear Fusion Reaction 1H2 + 1H3 using Two-Dimension Granular Molecular Dynamics Model

Molecular dynamics in 2-D accompanied by granular model provides an opportunity to investigate binding between nuclei particles and its properties that arises during collision in a fusion reaction. A fully classical approach is used to observe the influence of initial angle of nucleus orientation to the product yielded by the reaction. As an example, a simplest fusion reaction between 1H2 and 1H3 is observed. Several products of the fusion reaction have been obtained, even the unreported ones, including temporary 2He4 nucleus.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Smaller Granular Particles Deposition on a Larger One Due to Velocity Sequence Dependent Electrical Charge Distribution

Deposition of smaller granular particles on a larger nucleus particle has been simulated in two-dimension using molecular dynamics method. Variation of sequences of velocity of deposited particles is conducted and reported in this work. The sequences obey a normal distribution function of velocity with the same parameters. It has been observed that for velocity in range of 0 to 0.02 the densest deposited site (15-17 % number of grains) is located at about angle π/4 where location of injection point is π/4. And the less dense is about π/4 + π/2. Different sequences give similar result.

Partition function of 1-, 2-, and 3-D monatomic ideal gas: A simple and comprehensive review

This article discusses partition function of monatomic ideal gas which is given in Statistical Physisc at Physics Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia. Students in general are not familiar with partition function. This unfamiliarness was detected at a problem of partition function which was re-given in an examination in other dimensions that had been previously given in the lecture. Based on this observation, the need of a simple but comprehensive article about partition function in one-, two-, and three-dimensions is a must. For simplicity, a monatomic ideal gas is chosen.

A simple pendulum: Obtaining motion of pendulum bob from string tension time series

Time series of string tension of a simple pendulum has not yet been a interesting motion information, even nowadays using a force tension sensor can be measured easily. A numerical procedure is presented how to obtain motion of pendulum bob from the string tension. Unfortunately, proposed procedure does not work. A quadratic term of ωloses the sign of ωthat prevents the procedure to work. Applying sign of string tension into the procedure can produce the time series but only in positive value. The error for reproduced angular displacement is about 7.6%.

Energy of one-dimensional diatomic elastic granular gas: Theory and molecular dynamics Simulation

One-dimensional ideal diatomic gas is simulated through possible types of motion of a molecule. Energy of each type of its motion is calculated from theory and numerical method. Calculation of kinetic energy of an atom in translational-vibrational motion is not analytically simple, but it can be solved by numerical method of molecular dynamic simulation. This paper justifies that kinetic energy of a diatomic molecule can be determined by two different approaches. The first is the sum of kinetic energy of each atom and second is the sum of kinetic energy of translational motion and vibrational motion.

One dimension spring supported ball on top of a sinusoidal vibrating plate: A forced oscillation simulation using molecular dynamics method

A ball supported by a spring is set on top of a plate which is sinusoidal vibrated. The motion is limited to one dimension motion. It is assumed that the spring is an ideal one with zero mass. The vibrating plate is considered much heavier than the ball, so that the ball motion has no influence on the plate motion. Plate vibration frequency is varied around the frequency of ball-spring system. Resonance phenomenon is reported, which needs a phase match condition to occur.
