(Half) Wormholes under Irrelevant Deformation

Recently it has been shown by Almheiri and Lin [1] that the reconstruction of black-hole interior is sensitive to knowing the exact coupling of the boundary theory even if the coupling is irrelevant. This motivates us to enlarge the set of the one-time and two-time toy models inspired from the SYK by deforming the same with \textit{irrelevant} coupling. We find that both half-wormholes as well as the wormholes persist in presence of the deformation, leading to a similar mechanism for curing the factorization problem. While for the one time case, the deformed partition function and its moments change by an overall factor, which can completely be absorbed into a renormalization of coupling, for the two time (or coupled one time) SYK we find non-trivial dynamics of the saddles as the couplings are varied. Curiously, the \textit{irrelevant} deformations that we consider can also be thought of as an ensemble average over an overall scaling of the original undeformed Hamiltionian with an appropriate probability distribution, this allows for the possibility that half-wormholes may also be present in suitably defined ensemble of theories.

Spontaneously Broken Boosts in CFTs

Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) have rich dynamics in heavy states. We describe the constraints due to spontaneously broken boost and dilatation symmetries in such states. The spontaneously broken boost symmetries require the existence of new low-lying primaries whose scaling dimension gap, we argue, scales as $O(1)$. We demonstrate these ideas in various states, including fluid, superfluid, mean field theory, and Fermi surface states. We end with some remarks about the large charge limit in 2d and discuss a theory of a single compact boson with an arbitrary conformal anomaly.

The Disk Partition Function in String Theory

We investigate the disk partition function for the open string. This is a subtle problem because of the presence of a residual gauge group $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ on the worldsheet even after fixing the conformal gauge. It naively has infinite volume and leads to a vanishing answer. We use different methods that all demonstrate that $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ effectively behaves like a group with finite negative volume in the path integral, which leads to a simple prescription for the computation of the disk partition function. We apply our findings to give a simple rederivation of the D-brane tensions.

EFT Asymptotics: the Growth of Operator Degeneracy

We establish formulae for the asymptotic growth (with respect to the scaling dimension) of the number of operators in effective field theory, or equivalently the number of $S$-matrix elements, in arbitrary spacetime dimensions and with generic field content. This we achieve by generalising a theorem due to Meinardus and applying it to Hilbert series -- partition functions for the degeneracy of (subsets of) operators. Although our formulae are asymptotic, numerical experiments reveal remarkable agreement with exact results at very low orders in the EFT expansion, including for complicated phenomenological theories such as the standard model EFT. Our methods also reveal phase transition-like behaviour in Hilbert series. We discuss prospects for tightening the bounds and providing rigorous errors to the growth of operator degeneracy, and of extending the analytic study and utility of Hilbert series to EFT.

Universality in asymptotic bounds and its saturation in $2$D CFT

We study asymptotics of three point coefficients (light-light-heavy) and two point correlators in heavy states in unitary, compact $2$D CFTs. We prove an upper and lower bound on such quantities using numerically assisted Tauberian techniques. We obtain an optimal upper bound on the spectrum of operators appearing with fixed spin from the OPE of two identical scalars. While all the CFTs obey this bound, rational CFTs come close to saturating it. This mimics the scenario of bounds on asymptotic density of states and thereby pronounces an universal feature in asymptotics of 2D CFTs. Next, we clarify the role of smearing in interpreting the asymptotic results pertaining to considerations of eigenstate thermalization in 2D CFTs. In the context of light-light-heavy three point coefficients, we find that the order one number in the bound is sensitive to how close the light operators are from the $\frac{c}{32}$ threshold. In context of two point correlator in heavy state, we find the presence of an enigmatic regime which separates the $AdS_3$ thermal physics and the BTZ black hole physics. Furthermore, we present some new numerical results on the behavior of spherical conformal block.

High Energy Modular Bootstrap, Global Symmetries and Defects

We derive Cardy-like formulas for the growth of operators in different sectors of unitary $2$ dimensional CFT in the presence of topological defect lines by putting an upper and lower bound on the number of states with scaling dimension in the interval $[Δ-δ,Δ+δ]$ for large $Δ$ at fixed $δ$. Consequently we prove that given any unitary modular invariant $2$D CFT symmetric under finite global symmetry $G$ (acting faithfully), all the irreducible representations of $G$ appear in the spectra of the untwisted sector; the growth of states is Cardy like and proportional to the ''square'' of the dimension of the irrep. In the Schwarzian limit, the result matches onto that of JT gravity with a bulk gauge theory. If the symmetry is non-anomalous, the result applies to any sector twisted by a group element. For $c>1$, the statements are true for Virasoro primaries. Furthermore, the results are applicable to large c CFTs. We also extend our results for the continuous $U(1)$ group.

Beurling-Selberg Extremization and Modular Bootstrap at High Energies

We consider previously derived upper and lower bounds on the number of operators in a window of scaling dimensions $[Δ- δ,Δ+ δ]$ at asymptotically large $Δ$ in 2d unitary modular invariant CFTs. These bounds depend on a choice of functions that majorize and minorize the characteristic function of the interval $[Δ- δ,Δ+ δ]$ and have Fourier transforms of finite support. The optimization of the bounds over this choice turns out to be exactly the Beurling-Selberg extremization problem, widely known in analytic number theory. We review solutions of this problem and present the corresponding bounds on the number of operators for any $δ\geq 0$. When $2δ\in \mathbb Z_{\geq 0}$ the bounds are saturated by known partition functions with integer-spaced spectra. Similar results apply to operators of fixed spin and Virasoro primaries in $c>1$ theories.

Bounds on the density of states and the spectral gap in CFT$_{2}$

We improve the recently discovered upper and lower bounds on the $O(1)$ correction to the Cardy formula for the density of states integrated over an energy window (of width $2δ$), centered at high energy in 2 dimensional conformal field theory. We prove optimality of the lower bound for $δ\to 1^{-}$. We prove a conjectured upper bound on the asymptotic gap between two consecutive Virasoro primaries for a central charge greater than $1,$ demonstrating it to be $1.$ Furthermore, a systematic method is provided to establish a limit on how tight the bound on the $O(1)$ correction to the Cardy formula can be made using bandlimited functions. The techniques and the functions used here are of generic importance whenever the Tauberian theorems are used to estimate some physical quantities.

Tauberian-Cardy formula with spin

We prove a $2$ dimensional Tauberian theorem in context of $2$ dimensional conformal field theory. The asymptotic density of states with conformal weight $(h,\bar{h})\to (\infty,\infty)$ for any arbitrary spin is derived using the theorem. We further rigorously show that the error term is controlled by the twist parameter and insensitive to spin. The sensitivity of the leading piece towards spin is discussed. We identify a universal piece in microcanonical entropy when the averaging window is large. An asymptotic spectral gap on $(h,\bar{h})$ plane, hence the asymptotic twist gap is derived. We prove an universal inequality stating that in a compact unitary $2$D CFT without any conserved current $Ag\leq \frac{π(c-1)r^2}{24}$ is satisfied, where $g$ is the twist gap over vacuum and $A$ is the minimal "areal gap", generalizing the minimal gap in dimension to $(h',\bar{h}')$ plane and $r=\frac{4\sqrt{3}}π\simeq 2.21$. We investigate density of states in the regime where spin is parametrically larger than twist with both going to infinity. Moreover, the large central charge regime is studied. We also probe finite twist, large spin behavior of density of states.

Bound on asymptotics of magnitude of three point coefficients in 2D CFT

We use methods inspired from complex Tauberian theorems to make progress in understanding the asymptotic behavior of the magnitude of heavy-light-heavy three point coefficients rigorously. The conditions and the precise sense of averaging, which can lead to exponential suppression of such coefficients are investigated. We derive various bounds for the typical average value of the magnitude of heavy-light-heavy three point coefficients and verify them numerically.

Reparameterization Invariant Operator Basis for NRQED and HQET

We discuss how reparameterization invariance connects a rotationally-invariant heavy particle effective theory with a single fermion to a Lorentz-invariant theory. Using Hilbert-series methods, a Lorentz-invariant operator basis is tabulated, up to and including operators of order $1/M^4$, when the fermion couples to an external $U(1)$ or $SU(3)$ gauge interaction.

Unitarity and Universality in non relativistic Conformal Field theory

We relate the notion of unitarity of a $SL(2,\mathbf{R})$ invariant field theory with that of a Schrodinger field theory using the fact that $SL(2,\mathbf{R})$ is a subgroup of Schrodinger group. Exploiting $SL(2,\mathbf{R})$ unitarity, we derive the unitarity bounds and null conditions for a Schrödinger field theory (for the neutral as well as the charged sector). In non integer dimensions the theory is shown to be non-unitary. Furthermore, the use of $SL(2,\mathbf{R})$ subgroup opens up the possibility of borrowing results from 1D $SL(2,\mathbf{R})$ invariant field theory to explore Schrodinger field theory, in particular, the sector with zero charge. We explore the consequences of $SL(2,\mathbf{R})$ symmetry e.g. the convergence of operator product expansion in the kinematic limit, where all the operators (neutral and/or charged) are on same temporal slice ($x=constant$), the universal behavior of weighted spectral density function, existence of infinite number of $SL(2,\mathbf{R})$ primaries, the analytic behavior of three point function as a function of spatial separation. We discuss the implication of imposing parity invariance ($τ\to-τ$) in addition to Schrodinger invariance and emphasize its difference from time reversal ($τ\to-τ$ with charge conjugation).

The Spinful Large Charge Sector of Non-Relativistic CFTs: From Phonons to Vortex Crystals

We study operators in Schrödinger invariant field theories (non-relativistic conformal field theories or NRCFTs) with large charge (particle number) and spin. Via the state-operator correspondence for NRCFTs, such operators correspond to states of a superfluid in a harmonic trap with phonons or vortices. Using the effective field theory of the Goldstone mode, we compute the dimensions of operators to leading order in the angular momentum $L$ and charge $Q$. We find a diverse set of scaling behaviors for NRCFTs in both $d=2$ and $d=3$.

Modular crossings, OPE coefficients and black holes

In (1+1)-d CFTs, the 4-point function on the plane can be mapped to the pillow geometry and thereby crossing symmetry gets translated into a modular property. We use these modular features to derive a universal asymptotic formula for OPE coefficients in which one of the operators is averaged over heavy primaries. The coarse-grained heavy channel then reproduces features of the gravitational 2-to-2 S-matrix which has black holes as their intermediate states.

Nonrelativistic Conformal Field Theories in the Large Charge Sector

We study Schrödinger invariant field theories (nonrelativistic conformal field theories) in the large charge (particle number) sector. We do so by constructing the effective field theory (EFT) for a Goldstone boson of the associated $U(1)$ symmetry in a harmonic potential. This EFT can be studied semi-classically in a large charge expansion. We calculate the dimensions of the lowest lying operators, as well as correlation functions of charged operators. We find universal behavior of three point function in large charge sector. We comment on potential applications to fermions at unitarity and critical anyon systems.

Conformal Structure of the Heavy Particle EFT Operator Basis

An operator basis of an effective theory with a heavy particle, subject to external gauge fields, is spanned by a particular kind of neutral scalar primary of the nonrelativistic conformal group. We calculate the characters that can be used for generating the operators in a non-relativistic effective field theory, which accounts for redundancies from the equations of motion and integration by parts.

Existence and Construction of Galilean invariant $z\neq2$ Theories

We prove a no-go theorem for the construction of a Galilean boost invariant and $z\neq2$ anisotropic scale invariant field theory with a finite dimensional basis of fields. Two point correlators in such theories, we show, grow unboundedly with spatial separation. Correlators of theories with an infinite dimensional basis of fields, for example, labeled by a continuous parameter, do not necessarily exhibit this bad behavior. Hence, such theories behave effectively as if in one extra dimension. Embedding the symmetry algebra into the conformal algebra of one higher dimension also reveals the existence of an internal continuous parameter. Consideration of isometries shows that the non-relativistic holographic picture assumes a canonical form, where the bulk gravitational theory lives in a space-time with one extra dimension. This can be contrasted with the original proposal by Balasubramanian and McGreevy, and by Son, where the metric of a $d+2$ dimensional space-time is proposed to be dual of a $d$ dimensional field theory. We provide explicit examples of theories living at fixed point with anisotropic scaling exponent $z=\frac{2\ell}{\ell+1}\,,\ell\in \mathbb{Z}$

Charged structure constants from modularity

We derive a universal formula for the average heavy-heavy-light structure constants for 2d CFTs with non-vanishing u(1) charge. The derivation utilizes the modular properties of one-point functions on the torus. Refinements in N=2 SCFTs, show that the resulting Cardy-like formula for the structure constants has precisely the same shifts in the central charge as that of the thermodynamic entropy found earlier. This analysis generalizes the recent results by Kraus and Maloney for CFTs with an additional global u(1) symmetry. Our results at large central charge are also shown to match with computations from the holographic dual, which suggest that the averaged CFT three-point coefficient also serves as an useful probe of detecting black hole hair.
