Quantum corrections to the near-extremal thermodynamics of (warped) BTZ black holes

We study one-loop effects in the near-extremal thermodynamics of BTZ and warped BTZ black holes, with particular emphasis on the fate of eigenmodes that become zero modes in the extremal throat. Our analysis is formulated in three-dimensional Topologically Massive Gravity, a higher derivative theory characterized by the presence of a gravitational Chern--Simons term, and it makes use of the Newman--Penrose formulation. For BTZ, we compare the near-horizon computation with the full-geometry eigenvalue problem and identify how the Schwarzian and rotational sectors are lifted at small temperature. We then extend the same strategy to warped BTZ. We find that rotational modes are essential for a consistent near-extremal treatment of both BTZ and warped BTZ black holes, and cannot be discarded without first specifying the boundary conditions.

Infinite-dimensional symmetries in plane wave spacetimes

We study the asymptotic symmetries of the Nappi-Witten spacetime in four dimensions, a plane wave arising as the Penrose limit of AdS$_2\times S^2$. Imposing suitable boundary conditions at large transverse distance, we uncover a new infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra allowing for non-trivial central extensions. The corresponding phase space encompasses the most general four-dimensional pp-wave metric, including in particular the Penrose limit of Kerr black holes.

Photon rings in a holographic toy model

Light circling around an astrophysical black hole can spend a long time skirting its unstably bound photon orbits before escaping to infinity. To a distant observer, this orbiting light would appear as a bright ring encircling the image of the black hole. Though not yet resolved by radio-interferometric observations from the ground, this ``photon ring'' will be the target of future space-based black hole observations. Motivated by this experimental prospect, studies have sought to elucidate the theoretical connections between the photon ring -- an observable, classical effect -- and the putative holographic description of black holes in quantum gravity. General relativity predicts that the detailed structure of the photon ring encodes the high-frequency (eikonal) spectrum of quasinormal modes (QNMs) emitted by a perturbed black hole as it rings down, and also that the photon ring displays an emergent conformal symmetry that acts upon this spectrum. In holography, the classical QNM frequencies are expected to map to Ruelle resonances of the dual quantum theory. In this paper, we explore these connections in a lower-dimensional toy model based on Warped AdS$_3$ black holes that shares many features with the (3+1)-dimensional Kerr background -- including a photon ring at finite radius -- while still providing analytic control of the QNM frequencies.

Asymptotic T-duality in three dimensions

In (super)gravity theories, T-duality relates solutions with an exact isometry which can have wildly different asymptotic behaviors: a well-known example is the duality between BTZ black holes and (non-extremal) three-dimensional black strings. Using this dual pair, we show how the knowledge of a phase space which includes one set of solutions (here, BTZ black holes embedded in the Brown-Henneaux phase space) allows to obtain a phase space for the dual set via an asymptotic notion of T-duality. The resulting asymptotic symmetry algebras can be very different. For our particular example, we find a large algebra of symmetries for the black string phase space which includes as subalgebras $\mathfrak{bms}_2$, $\mathfrak{bms}_3$, and a twisted warped conformal algebra. On the way, we show that a chiral half of the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions are dual to the Compère-Song-Strominger ones.

Geometric Actions for Lower-Spin Gravity

We perform the Hamiltonian reduction of Lower Spin Gravity, the simplest bulk dual for a Warped Conformal Field Theory (WCFT), consisting in an $SL(2) \times U(1)$ Chern-Simons model. We identify the boundary action as the geometric action on coadjoint orbits of the Warped Virasoro group. We use this reduced action to compute one-loop contributions to the torus partition function and compare them to the Warped Virasoro characters.

Boundary Conditions for Extremal Black Holes from 2d Gravity

We devise new boundary conditions for the near-horizon geometries of extremal BTZ and Kerr black holes, as well as for the ultra-cold limit of the Kerr-de Sitter black hole. These boundary conditions are obtained as the higher-dimensional uplift of recently proposed boundary conditions in two-dimensional gravity. Their asymptotic symmetries consist in the semi-direct product of a Virasoro and a current algebra, of which we determine the central extensions.

Near-Extremal Limits of Warped CFTs

Warped conformal field theories (WCFTs) are two-dimensional non-relativistic systems, with a chiral scaling and shift symmetry. We present a detailed derivation of the near-extremal limit for their torus partition function. This limit requires large values of the central charge, and is only consistent for non-unitary WCFT. We compare our analysis with previous studies of WCFT and its relation to a one-dimensional warped-Schwarzian theory. We discuss different ensembles of warped CFTs and contrast our results with analogous limits in two-dimensional CFTs.

Near-Extremal Limits of Warped Black Holes

A holographic description of three-dimensional warped black holes suffers from ambiguities due to a seemingly harmless choice of coordinate system. This gives rise to the notion of ensembles in warped black holes, and we focus on two of them: the canonical and quadratic ensemble. Our aim is to quantify the imprint of these ensembles in the near-extremal limit of a warped black hole. To this end, for each ensemble, we explore the thermodynamic response and evaluate greybody factors. We also set-up a holographic dictionary in their near-AdS$_2$ region, and decode aspects of the dual near-CFT$_1$. This gives us different perspectives of the black hole that we can contrast and compare. On the one hand, we find perfect agreement between the near-extremal limit of the canonical ensemble warped black holes, their near-AdS$_2$ effective analysis, and a warped conformal field theory description. On the other, we are led to rule out the quadratic ensemble due to inconsistencies at the quantum level with the near-AdS$_2$ effective description.

Boundary Conditions for Warped AdS$_3$ in Quadratic Ensemble

In the context of warped conformal field theories (WCFT), the derivation of the warped Cardy formula relies on the zero mode spectrum being bounded from below. Generically, this is not true for holographic WCFTs in "canonical" ensemble, whereas this condition is satisfied in the "quadratic" ensemble, making it more natural in holographic setups. In this work, we find a new set of boundary conditions in three-dimensional Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG) such that the putative dual theory is a WCFT in quadratic ensemble. Surprisingly, imposing the equations of motion, we obtain a closed form metric spanned by two arbitrary chiral functions, analogous to the Bañados metrics in Einstein gravity. Surface charges for these boundary conditions are not a priori integrable and we discuss two choices of boundary conditions to make them so. We obtain the bulk thermodynamic entropy of warped BTZ black holes by making use of the warped Cardy formula, in its regime of validity. We also discuss the issue of identifying the vacuum in our solution space: demanding the enhancement of global symmetries selects only a family of solutions, out of which the unique vacuum must be carefully singled out.

New Chiral Gravity

The phase space of three-dimensional gravity with Compere-Song-Strominger (CSS) boundary conditions is endowed with asymptotic symmetries consisting in the semi-direct product of a Virasoro and a $\hat{u}(1)$ Kač-Moody algebra, and contains BTZ black holes whose entropy can be accounted for by the degeneracy of states of a Warped CFT. By embedding these boundary conditions in Topologically Massive Gravity, we observe the existence of two special points in the space of couplings parameterized by the AdS$_3$ radius $\ell$ and the Chern-Simons coupling $μ$. When $μ= \pm {1\over \ell}$, the asymptotic symmetries reduce to either a chiral Virasoro algebra or a pure $\hat{u}(1)$ Kač-Moody current algebra. At those points, black holes have positive energy while that of linearized excitations are non-negative.

Warped Flatland

We study warped flat geometries in three-dimensional topologically massive gravity. They are quotients of global warped flat spacetime, whose isometries are given by the 2-dimensional centrally extended Poincaré algebra. The latter can be obtained as a certain scaling limit of Warped AdS3 space with a positive cosmological constant. We discuss the causal structure of the resulting spacetimes using projection diagrams. We study their charges and thermodynamics, together with asymptotic Killing vectors preserving a consistent set of boundary conditions including them. The asymptotic symmetry group is given by a Warped CFT algebra, with a vanishing current level. A generalization of the derivation of the Warped Cardy formula applies in this case, reproducing the entropy of the warped flat cosmological spacetimes.

Uniformization of Entanglement Entropy in Holographic Warped Conformal Field Theories

Using a uniformization map we determine the holographic entanglement entropy for states of a Warped Conformal Field Theory dual to a generic vacuum metric in AdS$_3$ gravity with Compère--Song--Strominger boundary conditions. We point out how that expression could lead to inequalities that can be interpreted as quantum energy conditions for Warped Conformal Field Theories.

Warped Symmetries of the Kerr Black Hole

We propose a set of diffeomorphism that act non-trivially near the horizon of the Kerr black hole. We follow the recent developments of Haco-Hawking-Perry-Strominger to quantify this phase space, with the most substantial difference being our choice of vectors fields. Our gravitational charges are organized into a Virasoro-Kac-Moody algebra with non-trivial central extensions. We interpret this algebra as arising from a warped conformal field theory. Using the data we can infer from this warped CFT description, we capture the thermodynamic properties of the Kerr black hole.

Warped Black Holes in Lower-Spin Gravity

We provide a simple holographic description for a warped conformal field theory (WCFT) at finite temperature. To this end we study the counterpart of warped anti-de Sitter black holes in three dimensions using a lower-spin $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})\oplus\mathfrak{u}(1)$ Chern-Simons theory proposed by Hofman and Rollier. We determine the asymptotic symmetries, thermal entropy and holographic entanglement entropy and show that all these quantities are in perfect agreement with the expectations from the dual WCFT perspective. In addition we provide a metric interpretation of our results which naturally fits with our analysis in the Chern-Simons formulation.

Asymptotic Symmetries of Three-Dimensional Black Strings

We determine a consistent phase space for a theory consisting in the Einstein-Hilbert action coupled to matter fields (dilaton, one-form, two-form) and containing three-dimensional black strings (the Horne-Horowitz solution and generalizations thereof). The theory at hand is the low energy effective action for the bosonic sector of heterotic string theory. We find a consistent set of boundary conditions whose algebra of asymptotic charges consist in a single Virasoro algebra supplemented by three global $u(1)$ generators. We also discuss the thermodynamics of the zero-mode solutions and point out some peculiar features of this system.

Flatspace Chiral Supergravity

We propose a holographic duality between a 2 dimensional (2d) chiral superconformal field theory and a certain theory of supergravity in 3d with flatspace boundary conditions that is obtained as a double scaling limit of a parity breaking theory of supergravity. We show how the asymptotic symmetries of the bulk theory reduce from the "despotic" Super Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra (or equivalently the Inhomogeneous Super Galilean Conformal Algebra) to a single copy of the Super-Virasoro algebra in this limit and also reproduce the same reduction from a study of null vectors in the putative 2d dual field theory.

Spectral Flow in 3D Flat Spacetimes

In this paper we investigate spectral flow symmetry in asymptotically flat spacetimes both from a gravity as well as a putative dual quantum field theory perspective. On the gravity side we consider models in Einstein gravity and supergravity as well as their "reloaded" versions, present suitable boundary conditions, determine the respective asymptotic symmetry algebras and the thermal entropy of cosmological solutions in each of these models. On the quantum field theory side we identify the spectral flow symmetry as automorphisms of the underlying symmetry algebra of the theory. Using spectral flow invariance we then determine the thermal entropy of these quantum field theories and find perfect agreement with the results from the gravity side. In addition we determine logarithmic corrections to the thermal entropy.

Enhanced Asymptotic Symmetry Algebra of 2+1 Dimensional Flat Space

In this paper we present a new set of asymptotic boundary conditions for Einstein gravity in 2+1 dimensions with vanishing cosmological constant that are a generalization of the Barnich-Comp{è}re boundary conditions gr-qc/0610130. These new boundary conditions lead to an asymptotic symmetry algebra that is generated by a $\mathfrak{bms}_3$ algebra and two affine $\hat{\mathfrak{u}}(1)$ current algebras. We then apply these boundary conditions to Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG) and determine how the presence of the gravitational Chern-Simons term affects the central extensions of the asymptotic symmetry algebra. We furthermore determine the thermal entropy of solutions obeying our new boundary conditions for both Einstein gravity and TMG.
