Warped AdS_3 Black Holes in Higher Derivative Gravity Theories

We consider warped AdS_3 black holes in generic higher derivatives gravity theories in 2+1 dimensions. The asymptotic symmetry group of the phase space containing these black holes is the semi-direct product of a centrally extended Virasoro algebra and an affine u(1) Kac-Moody algebra. Previous works have shown that in some specific theories, the entropy of these black holes agrees with a Cardy-like entropy formula derived for warped conformal field theories. In this paper, we show that this entropy matching continues to hold for the most general higher derivative theories of gravity. We also discuss the existence of phase transitions.

Near-Horizon Geometry and Warped Conformal Symmetry

We provide boundary conditions for three-dimensional gravity including boosted Rindler spacetimes, representing the near-horizon geometry of non-extremal black holes or flat space cosmologies. These boundary conditions force us to make some unusual choices, like integrating the canonical boundary currents over retarded time and periodically identifying the latter. The asymptotic symmetry algebra turns out to be a Witt algebra plus a twisted u(1) current algebra with vanishing level, corresponding to a twisted warped CFT that is qualitatively different from the ones studied so far in the literature. We show that this symmetry algebra is related to BMS by a twisted Sugawara construction and exhibit relevant features of our theory, including matching micro- and macroscopic calculations of the entropy of zero-mode solutions. We confirm this match in a generalization to boosted Rindler-AdS. Finally, we show how Rindler entropy emerges in a suitable limit.

Phase Transitions in Warped AdS$_3$ Gravity

We consider asymptotically Warped AdS$_3$ black holes in Topologically Massive Gravity. We study their thermodynamic stability and show the existence of a Hawking-Page phase transition between the black hole and thermal background phases. At zero angular potential, the latter is shown to occur at the self-dual point of the dual Warped Conformal Field Theory partition function, in analogy with the phase transition for BTZ black holes in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$. We also discuss how the central and vacuum charges can be obtained from inner horizon mechanics in the presence of a gravitational anomaly.

Inner Mechanics of 3d Black Holes

We investigate properties of the inner horizons of certain black holes in higher-derivative three-dimensional gravity theories. We focus on BTZ and Spacelike Warped Anti-de Sitter black holes, as well as on asymptotically Warped de-Sitter solutions exhibiting both a cosmological and a black hole horizon. We verify that a First Law is satisfied at the Inner horizon, in agreement with the proposal of \cite{Castro:2012av}. We then show that, in Topologically Massive Gravity, the product of the areas of the inner and outer horizons fails to be independent on the mass, and trace this to the diffeomorphism anomaly of the theory.

SUSY Enhancements in (0,4) Deformations of AdS_3/CFT_2

We discuss a marginal deformation of the SL(2,R) x SU(2) x U(1)^4 WZW model, which describes string theory on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4, that corresponds to warping the S^3 factor. This deformation breaks part of the N=(4,4) supersymmetry of the undeformed dual CFT to N=(0,4) supersymmetry. In the spirit of work by Giveon, Kutasov, and Seiberg, we construct the asymptotic spacetime symmetry algebra from worldsheet operators and find a restoration of (4,4) supersymmetry at discrete values of the deformation parameter. We explain this result from various perspectives: the worldsheet, supergravity, and from the singular D1-D5 CFT. The supergravity analysis includes an asymptotic symmetry computation of the level of the affine SU(2) R-symmetry, which arises purely from B-field contributions.

Non-Einstein geometries in Chiral Gravity

We analyze the asymptotic solutions of Chiral Gravity (Topologically Massive Gravity at μl = 1 with Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions) focusing on non-Einstein metrics. A class of such solutions admits curvature singularities in the interior which are reflected as singularities or infinite bulk energy of the corresponding linear solutions. A non-linear solution is found exactly. The back-reaction induces a repulsion of geodesics and a shielding of the singularity by an event horizon but also introduces closed timelike curves.

The Curious Case of Null Warped Space

We initiate a comprehensive study of a set of solutions of topologically massive gravity known as null warped anti-de Sitter spacetimes. These are pp-wave extensions of three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. We first perform a careful analysis of the linearized stability of black holes in these spacetimes. We find two qualitatively different types of solutions to the linearized equations of motion: the first set has an exponential time dependence, the second - a polynomial time dependence. The solutions polynomial in time induce severe pathologies and moreover survive at the non-linear level. In order to make sense of these geometries, it is thus crucial to impose appropriate boundary conditions. We argue that there exists a consistent set of boundary conditions that allows us to reject the above pathological modes from the physical spectrum. The asymptotic symmetry group associated to these boundary conditions consists of a centrally-extended Virasoro algebra. Using this central charge we can account for the entropy of the black holes via Cardy's formula. Finally, we note that the black hole spectrum is chiral and prove a Birkoff theorem showing that there are no other stationary axisymmetric black holes with the specified asymptotics. We extend most of the analysis to a larger family of pp-wave black holes which are related to Schrödinger spacetimes with critical exponent z.

String Theory on Warped AdS_3 and Virasoro Resonances

We investigate aspects of holographic duals to time-like warped AdS_3 space-times--which include Gödel's universe--in string theory. Using worldsheet techniques similar to those that have been applied to AdS_3 backgrounds, we are able to identify space-time symmetry algebras that act on the dual boundary theory. In particular, we always find at least one Virasoro algebra with computable central charge. Interestingly, there exists a dense set of points in the moduli space of these models in which there is actually a second commuting Virasoro algebra, typically with different central charge than the first. We analyze the supersymmetry of the backgrounds, finding related enhancements, and comment on possible interpretations of these results. We also perform an asymptotic symmetry analysis at the level of supergravity, providing additional support for the worldsheet analysis.

Asymptotic symmetries of Schrödinger spacetimes

We discuss the asymptotic symmetry algebra of the Schrodinger-invariant metrics in d+3 dimensions and its realization on finite temperature solutions of gravity coupled to matter fields. These solutions have been proposed as gravity backgrounds dual to non-relativistic CFTs with critical exponent z in d space dimensions. It is known that the Schrodinger algebra possesses an infinite-dimensional extension, the Schrodinger-Virasoro algebra. However, we show that the asymptotic symmetry algebra of Schrodinger spacetimes is only isomorphic to the exact symmetry group of the background. It is possible to construct from first principles finite and integrable charges that infinite-dimensionally extend the Schrodinger algebra but these charges are not correctly represented via a Dirac bracket. We briefly comment on the extension of our analysis to spacetimes with Lifshitz symmetry.

Boundary conditions for spacelike and timelike warped AdS_3 spaces in topologically massive gravity

We propose a set of consistent boundary conditions containing the spacelike warped black holes solutions of Topologically Massive Gravity. We prove that the corresponding asymptotic charges whose algebra consists in a Virasoro algebra and a current algebra are finite, integrable and conserved. A similar analysis is performed for the timelike warped AdS_3 spaces which contain a family of regular solitons. The energy of the boundary Virasoro excitations is positive while the current algebra leads to negative (for the spacelike warped case) and positive (for the timelike warped case) energy boundary excitations. We discuss the relationship with the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions.

Semi-classical central charge in topologically massive gravity

It is shown that the warped black holes geometries discussed recently in 0807.3040 admit an algebra of asymptotic symmetries isomorphic to the semi-direct product of a Virasoro algebra and an algebra of currents. The realization of this asymptotic symmetry by canonical charges allows one to find the central charge of the Virasoro algebra. The right-moving central charge $c_R = \frac{(5\hatν^2+3)l}{G\hatν (\hatν^2+3)}$ is obtained when the Virasoro generators are normalized in order to have a positive zero mode spectrum for the warped black holes. The current algebra is also shown to be centrally-extended.

Supersymmetric Gödel and warped black holes in string theory

It is observed that three-dimensional Gödel black holes can be promoted to exact string theory backgrounds through an orbifold of an hyperbolic asymmetric marginal deformation of the SL(2,R) WZW model. Tachyons are found in the spectrum of long strings. Uplifting these solutions in type IIB supergravity, extremal black holes are shown to preserve one supersymmetry in accordance with the BTZ limit. We also make connections with some recently discussed warped black hole solutions of topologically massive gravity, showing that they actually correspond to quotients of spacelike squashed AdS_3.

The deformation quantizations of the hyperbolic plane

We describe the space of (all) invariant deformation quantizations on the hyperbolic plane as solutions of the evolution of a second order hyperbolic differential operator. The construction is entirely explicit and relies on non-commutative harmonic analytical techniques on symplectic symmetric spaces. The present work presents a unified method producing every quantization of the hyperbolic plane, and provides, in the 2-dimensional context, an exact solution to Weinstein's WKB quantization program within geometric terms. The construction reveals the existence of a metric of Lorentz signature canonically attached (or `dual') to the geometry of the hyperbolic plane through the quantization process.

Black holes in symmetric spaces : anti-de Sitter spaces

Using symmetric space techniques, we show that closed orbits of the Iwasawa subgroups of $SO(2,l-1)$ naturally define singularities of a black hole causal structure in anti-de Sitter spaces in $l \geq 3$ dimensions. In particular, we recover for $l=3$ the non-rotating massive BTZ black hole. The method presented here is very simple and in principle generalizable to any semi-simple symmetric space.

Star products on extended massive non-rotating BTZ black holes

$AdS_3$ space-time admits a foliation by two-dimensional twisted conjugacy classes, stable under the identification subgroup yielding the non-rotating massive BTZ black hole. Each leaf constitutes a classical solution of the space-time Dirac-Born-Infeld action, describing an open D-string in $AdS_3$ or a D-string winding around the black hole. We first describe two nonequivalent maximal extensions of the non-rotating massive BTZ space-time and observe that in one of them, each D-string worldsheet admits an action of a two-parameter subgroup ($\ca \cn$) of $\SL$. We then construct non-formal, $\ca \cn$-invariant, star products that deform the classical algebra of functions on the D-string worldsheets and on their embedding space-times. We end by giving the first elements towards the definition of a Connes spectral triple on non-commutative $AdS$ space-times.
