Antiferromagnetic domain walls under spin-orbit torque

Domain walls in antiferromagnets under a spin-polarized current present dynamical behavior that is not observed in ferromagnets, and it is tunable by the current polarization. Precessional dynamics is obtained for perpendicular spin polarization. In-plane polarization gives propagating walls. We obtain the velocity as a function of current by a perturbation method for low velocities, and the wall profile is found to lack a definite parity. For high velocities, a power-law decay develops in the trailing tail of the wall. The main features of the wall profile are manifest in a direct solution of an equation that is valid in a limiting case. Oscillatory motion of domain walls is obtained for a spin polarization that has both perpendicular and in-plane components, and an analytical description is given. We discuss the modifications of the dynamics when a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is present. Finally, we give the magnetization of the dynamical walls and find that this can become large, providing a potential method for observations.

Positional memory of skyrmions in magnetic bilayers

We numerically and analytically study the transient dynamics of magnetic skyrmions in synthetic antiferromagnets under a magnetic field gradient. We consider skyrmions in a bilayer with antiferromagnetic coupling between the layers. The skyrmions in the two layers move almost perpendicular to the field gradient and the motion is eventually halted with the two skyrmions at a distance from each other. We find that the skyrmion displacement is proportional to the field gradient, while the time it takes to reach their final position is almost independent of it. Below a critical magnetic field gradient strength, the system displays an unusual 'remembering' dynamics: when the magnetic field gradient is removed, the skyrmions return to their original positions to a high degree of accuracy. We explain this observation and other quantitative features using a moduli space dynamics approximation. We further provide an exact treatment of the dynamics that indicates that deviations from exact memory of the skyrmion position can arise.

Traveling antiferromagnetic domain walls in a magnetic field

We consider an antiferromagnet in one space dimension with easy-axis anisotropy in a perpendicular magnetic field. We study propagating domain wall solutions that can have a velocity up to a maximum $v_c$. The width of the domain wall is a non-monotonic function of the velocity and it diverges to infinity at $v_c$. Both features are in contrast to the case of the Lorentz invariant model in the absence of the field. We further study the modification of the wall profile when a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is added. Finally, we present a propagating spiral expected to form when the system is forced at a velocity higher than the maximum velocity for domain walls and we give numerical results for the effect of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.

Interaction and collision of skyrmions in chiral antiferromagnets

Skyrmions in an antiferromagnet can travel as solitary waves in stark contrast to the situation in ferromagnets. Traveling skyrmion solutions have been found numerically in chiral antiferromagnets. We study head-on collision events between two skyrmions. We find that the result of the collision depends on the initial velocity of the skyrmions. For small velocities, the skyrmions shrink as they approach, then bounce back and eventually acquire almost their initial speed. For larger velocities, the skyrmions approach each other and shrink until they become singular points at some finite separation and are eventually annihilated. Considering skyrmion energetics, we can determine the regimes of the different dynamical behaviors. Using a collective co-ordinate approach, we reproduce the dynamics of the collisions including the variation of the size of the skyrmions and collapse above a critical velocity.

Meron configurations in easy-plane chiral magnets

We demonstrate the existence and study in detail the features of chiral bimerons which are static solutions in an easy-plane magnet with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. These are skyrmionic textures with an integer topological charge and they present essential analogies to the meron configurations introduced in the context of quark confinement in the O(3) nonlinear sigma-model. We employ a Moebius transformation to show that, for weak chirality, bimeron configurations approach Belavin-Polyakov (BP) solutions characterized by tightly bound vortex and antivortex parts of the same size. Stronger chirality induces different vortex and antivortex sizes and also a detachment of merons, suggesting the possibility for a topological phase transition. Exploiting the fact that bimerons of opposite topological charges may exist in the same material, we demonstrate numerically a mechanism to generate meron pairs.

Non-Hermitian dynamics of a two-spin system with PT symmetry

A system of interacting spins that are under the influence of spin-polarized currents can be described using a complex functional, or a non-Hermitian (NH) Hamiltonian. We study the dynamics of two exchange-coupled spins on the Bloch sphere. In the case of currents leading to PT symmetry, an exceptional point that survives also in the nonlinear system is identified. The nonlinear system is bistable for small currents and it exhibits stable oscillating motion or it can relax to a fixed point. The oscillating motion of the two spins is akin to synchronized spin-torque oscillators. For the full nonlinear system, we derive two conserved quantities that furnish a geometric description of the spin trajectories in phase space and indicate stability of the oscillating motion. Our analytical results provide tools for the description of the dynamics of NH systems that are defined on the Bloch sphere.

Chiral magnetic skyrmions across length scales

The profile and energy of chiral skyrmions, found in magnetic materials with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, can be approximated by formulae obtained through asymptotic analysis in the limits of small and large skyrmion radius. Using fitting techniques, we modify these formulae so that their validity extends to almost the entire range of skyrmion radii. Such formulae are obtained for skyrmions that are stabilised in the presence of an external field or easy-axis anisotropy or a combination of these. We further study the effect of the magnetostatic field on the skyrmion profile. We compare the profile of magnetic bubbles, stabilized without the chiral Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction to that of a chiral skyrmion.

Vortex propagation and phase transitions in a chiral antiferromagnetic nanostripe

We study a vortex in a nanostripe of an antiferromagnet with easy-plane anisotropy and interfacial Dzyloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The vortex has hybrid chirality being Néel close to its center and Bloch away from it. Propagating vortices can acquire velocities up to a maximum value that is lower than the spin wave velocity. When the vortex is forced to exceed the maximum velocity, phase transitions occur to a nonflat spiral, vortex chain, and flat spiral, successively. The vortex chain is a topological configuration stabilised in the stripe geometry. Theoretical arguments lead to the general result that the velocity of localized excitations in chiral magnets cannot reach the spin wave velocity.

Skyrmion-antiskyrmion droplets in a chiral ferromagnet

We find numerically skyrmionic textures with skyrmion number Q=0 in ferromagnets with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and perpendicular anisotropy. These have the form of a skyrmion-antiskyrmion pair and may be called chiral droplets. They are stable in an infinite film as well as in disc-shaped magnetic elements. Droplets are found for values of the parameters close to the transition from the ferromagnetic to the spiral phase. We study their motion under spin-transfer torque. They move in the direction of the spin flow and, thus, their dynamics are drastically different than the Hall dynamics of the standard Q=0 skyrmion.

Traveling skyrmions in chiral antiferromagnets

Skyrmions in antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction are expected to exist for essentially the same reasons as in DM ferromagnets (FM). It is shown that skyrmions in antiferromagnets with the DM interaction can be traveling as solitary waves with velocities up to a maximum value that depends on the DM parameter. Their configuration is found numerically. The energy and the linear momentum of an AFM skyrmion lead to a proper definition of its mass. We give the details of the energy-momentum dispersion of traveling skyrmions and explore their particle-like character based on exact relations. The skyrmion number, known to be linked to the dynamics of topological solitons in FM, is, here, unrelated to the dynamical behavior. As a result, the solitonic behavior of skyrmions in AFM is in stark contrast to the dynamical behavior of their FM counterparts

Chiral skyrmions of large radius

We study the structure of an axially symmetric magnetic skyrmion in a ferromagnet with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We examine the regime of large skyrmions and we identify rigorously the critical value of the dimensionless parameter at which the skyrmion radius diverges to infinity, while the skyrmion energy converges to zero. This critical value coincides with the expected transition point from the uniform phase, which accommodates the skyrmion as an excited state, to the helical phase, which has negative energy. We give the profile field at the skyrmion core, its outer field, and the intermediate field at the skyrmion domain wall. Moreover, we derive an explicit formula for the leading asymptotic behavior of the energy as well as the leading term and first asymptotic correction for the value of the critical parameter. The key leading to the results is a parity theorem that utilizes exact formulae for the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the static Landau-Lifshitz equation centered at the skyrmion domain wall. The skyrmion energy is shown to be an odd function of the radius and the dimensionless parameter to be an even function.

The profile of chiral skyrmions of small radius

Chiral skyrmions are stable particle-like solutions of the Landau-Lifshitz equation for ferromagnets with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, characterized by a topological number. We study the profile of an axially symmetric skyrmion and give exact formulas for the solution of the corresponding far-field and near-field equations, in the asymptotic limit of small DM parameter (alternatively large anisotropy). The matching of these two fields leads to a formula for the skyrmion radius as a function of the DM parameter. The derived solutions show the different length scales which are present in the skyrmion profiles. The picture is thus created of a chiral skyrmion that is born out of a Belavin-Polyakov solution with an infinitesimally small radius, as the DM parameter is increased from zero. The skyrmion retains the Belavin-Polyakov profile over and well-beyond the core before it assumes an exponential decay; the profile of an axially-symmetric Belavin-Polyakov solution of unit degree plays the role of the universal core profile of chiral skyrmions.

Chiral skyrmion auto-oscillations in a ferromagnet under spin transfer torque

A skyrmion can be stabilized in a nanodisc geometry in a ferromagnetic material with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. We apply spin torque uniform in space and time and observe numerically that the skyrmion is set in steady rotational motion around a point off the nanodisc center. We give a theoretical description of the emerging auto-oscillation dynamics based on the coupling of the rotational motion to the breathing mode of the skyrmion and to the associated oscillations of the in-plane magnetization. The analysis shows that the achievement of auto-oscillations in this simple set-up is due to the chiral symmetry breaking. Thus, we argue that the system is turned into a spin-torque oscillator due to the chiral DM interaction.

Traveling domain walls in chiral ferromagnets

We show that chiral symmetry breaking enables traveling domain wall solution for the conservative Landau-Lifshitz equation of a uniaxial ferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In contrast to related domain wall models including stray-field based anisotropy, traveling wave solutions are not found in closed form. For the construction we follow a topological approach and provide details of solutions by means of numerical calculations.

Chiral skyrmions in an anisotropy gradient driven by spin-Hall effect

A strategy to drive skyrmion motion by a combination of an anisotropy gradient and spin Hall effect has recently been demonstrated. Here, we study the fundamental properties of this type of motion by combining micromagnetic simulations and a generalized Thiele equation. We find that the anisotropy gradient drives the skyrmion mainly along the direction perpendicular to the gradient, due to the conservative part of the torque. There is some slower motion along the direction parallel to the anisotropy gradient due to damping torque. When an appropriate spin Hall torque is added, the skyrmion velocity in the direction of the anisotropy gradient can be enhanced. This motion gives rise to acceleration of the skyrmion as this moves to regions of varying anisotropy. This phenomenon should be taken into account in experiments for the correct evaluation of the skyrmion velocity. We employ a Thiele like formalism and derive expressions for the velocity and the acceleration of the skyrmion that match very well with micromagnetic simulation results.

Skyrmion dynamics in chiral ferromagnets under spin-transfer torque

We study the dynamics of skyrmions under spin-transfer torque in Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya materials with easy-axis anisotropy. In particular, we study the motion of a topological skyrmion with skyrmion number $Q=1$ and a non-topological skyrmionium with $Q=0$ using their linear momentum, virial relations, and numerical simulations. The non-topological $Q=0$ skyrmionium is accelerated in the direction of the current flow and it either reaches a steady state with constant velocity, or it is elongated to infinity. The steady-state velocity is given by a balance between current and dissipation and has an upper limit. In contrast, the topological $Q=1$ skyrmion converges to a steady-state with constant velocity at an angle to the current flow. When the spin current stops the $Q=1$ skyrmion is spontaneously pinned whereas the $Q=0$ skyrmionium continues propagation. Exact solutions for the propagating skyrmionium are identified as solutions of equations given numerically in a previous work. Further exact results for propagating skyrmions are given in the case of the pure exchange model. The traveling solutions provide arguments that a spin-polarized current will cause rigid motion of a skyrmion or a skyrmionium.

Skyrmion dynamics in chiral ferromagnets

We study the dynamics of skyrmions in Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya materials with easy-axis anisotropy. An important link between topology and dynamics is established through the construction of unambiguous conservation laws obtained earlier in connection with magnetic bubbles and vortices. In particular, we study the motion of a topological skyrmion with skyrmion number $Q=1$ and a non-topological skyrmionium with $Q=0$ under the influence of an external field gradient. The $Q=1$ skyrmion undergoes Hall motion perpendicular to the direction of the field gradient with a drift velocity proportional to the gradient. In contrast, the non-topological $Q=0$ skyrmionium is accelerated in the direction of the field gradient, thus exhibiting ordinary Newtonian motion. When the external field is switched off the $Q=1$ skyrmion is spontaneously pinned around a fixed guiding center, whereas the $Q=0$ skyrmionium moves with constant velocity $v$. We give a systematic calculation of a skyrmionium traveling with any constant velocity $v$ that is smaller than a critical velocity $v_c$.

Lossless Polariton Solitons

Photons and excitons in a semiconductor microcavity interact to form exciton-polariton condensates. These are governed by a nonlinear quantum-mechanical system involving exciton and photon wavefunctions. We calculate all non-traveling harmonic soliton solutions for the one-dimensional lossless system. There are two frequency bands of bright solitons when the inter-exciton interactions produce an attractive nonlinearity and two frequency bands of dark solitons when the nonlinearity is repulsive. In addition, there are two frequency bands for which the exciton wavefunction is discontinuous at its symmetry point, where it undergoes a phase jump of pi. A band of continuous dark solitons merges with a band of discontinuous dark solitons, forming a larger band over which the soliton far-field amplitude varies from zero to infinity; the discontinuity is initiated when the operating frequency exceeds the free exciton frequency. The far fields of the solitons in the lowest and highest frequency bands (one discontinuous and one continuous dark) are linearly unstable, whereas the other four bands have linearly stable far fields, including the merged band of dark solitons.
