Continuous and discontinuous dark solitons in polariton condensates

Bose-Einstein condensates of exciton-polaritons are described by a Schrödinger system of two equations. Nonlinearity due to exciton interactions gives rise to a frequency band of dark soliton solutions, which are found analytically for the lossless zero-velocity case. The soliton's far-field value varies from zero to infinity as the operating frequency varies across the band. For positive detuning (photon frequency higher than exciton frequency), the exciton wavefunction becomes discontinuous when the operating frequency exceeds the exciton frequency. This phenomenon lies outside the parameter regime of validity of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) model. Within its regime of validity, we give a derivation of a single-mode GP model from the initial Schrödinger system and compare the continuous polariton solitons and GP solitons using the healing length notion.

Magnetization oscillations by vortex-antivortex dipoles

A vortex-antivortex dipole can be generated due to current with in-plane spin-polarization, flowing into a magnetic element, which then behaves as a spin transfer oscillator. Its dynamics is analyzed using the Landau-Lifshitz equation including a Slonczewski spin-torque term. We establish that the vortex dipole is set in steady state rotational motion due to the interaction between the vortices, while an external in-plane magnetic field can tune the frequency of rotation. The rotational motion is linked to the nonzero skyrmion number of the dipole. The spin-torque acts to stabilize the vortex dipole at a definite vortex-antivortex separation distance. In contrast to a free vortex dipole, the rotating pair under spin-polarized current is an attractor of the motion, therefore a stable state. Three types of vortex-antivortex pairs are obtained as we vary the external field and spin-torque strength. We give a guide for the frequency of rotation based on analytical relations.

Vortex lattices for ultracold bosonic atoms in a non-Abelian gauge potential

The use of coherent optical dressing of atomic levels allows the coupling of ultracold atoms to effective gauge fields. These can be used to generate effective magnetic fields, and have the potential to generate non-Abelian gauge fields. We consider a model of a gas of bosonic atoms coupled to a gauge field with U(2) symmetry, and with constant effective magnetic field. We include the effects of weak contact interactions by applying Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field theory. We study the effects of a U(2) non-Abelian gauge field on the vortex lattice phase induced by a uniform effective magnetic field, generated by an Abelian gauge field or, equivalently, by rotation of the gas. We show that, with increasing non-Abelian gauge field, the nature of the groundstate changes dramatically, with structural changes of the vortex lattice. We show that the effect of the non-Abelian gauge field is equivalent to the introduction of effective interactions with non-zero range. We also comment on the consequences of the non-Abelian gauge field for strongly correlated fractional quantum Hall states.

Frequency generation by a magnetic vortex-antivortex dipole in spin-polarized current

A vortex-antivortex (VA) dipole may be generated due to a spin-polarized current flowing through a nano-aperture in a magnetic element. We study the vortex dipole dynamics using the Landau-Lifshitz equation in the presence of an in-plane applied magnetic field and a Slonczewski spin-torque term with in-plane polarization. We establish that the vortex dipole is set in steady state rotational motion. The frequency of rotation is due to two independent forces: the interaction between the two vortices and the external magnetic field. The nonzero skyrmion number of the dipole is responsible for both forces giving rise to rotational dynamics. The spin-torque acts to stabilize the vortex dipole motion at a definite vortex-antivortex separation distance. We give analytical and numerical results for the angular frequency of rotation and VA dipole features as functions of the parameters.

Precessing vortices and antivortices in ferromagnetic elements

A micromagnetic numerical study of the precessional motion of the vortex and antivortex states in soft ferromagnetic circular nanodots is presented using Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert dynamics. For sufficiently small dot thickness and diameter, the vortex state is metastable and spirals toward the center of the dot when its initial displacement is smaller than a critical value. Otherwise, the vortex spirals away from the center and eventually exits the dot which remains in a state of in-plane magnetization (ground state). In contrast, the antivortex is always unstable and performs damped precession resulting in annihilation at the dot circumference. The vortex and antivortex frequencies of precession are compared with the response expected on the basis of Thiele's theory of collective coordinates. We also calculate the vortex restoring force with an explicit account of the magnetostatic and exchange interaction on the basis of the 'rigid' vortex and 'two-vortices side charges free' models and show that neither model explains the vortex translation mode eigenfrequency for nanodots of sufficiently small size.

A vortex dipole in a trapped two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the conservative dynamics and stationary configurations of a vortex-antivortex pair in a harmonically trapped two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. We establish the conceptual framework for understanding the stationary states and the topological defect trajectories, through considerations of different mechanisms of vortex motion and the bifurcation of soliton-like stationary solutions. Our insights are based on Lagrangian-based variational calculations, numerical solutions of both the time-dependent and time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii equations, and exact solutions for the non-interacting case.

Transmutation of momentum into position in magnetic vortices

We show that transmutation of linear momentum into position may occur in a system of three magnetic vortices thanks to a direct link between topology and dynamics in a ferromagnet. This happens via exchange between the linear momentum of a vortex-antivortex pair and the position of a single vortex during a semi-elastic scattering process. Vortex polarity switching occurs in the case of inelastic collisions.

Dynamics of vortex-antivortex pairs in ferromagnets

We study the dynamics of vortex-antivortex (VA) pairs in an infinitely thin ferromagnetic film with easy-plane anisotropy. These are localized excitations with finite energy that are characterized by a topological (skyrmion) number N = 0,+1,-1. Topologically trivial (N=0) VA pairs undergo Kelvin motion analogous to that encountered in fluid dynamics. In contrast, topologically nontrivial (N = +1,-1) VA pairs perform rotational motion around a fixed guiding center. We present the results of a detailed study in both cases and further demonstrate that in the presence of dissipation a rotating N = +1,-1 VA pair shrinks to a point and is annihilated, due to the discreteness of the lattice, thus leading to a "topologically forbidden" (Delta N = 1) process. We argue that the latter process underlies the experimentally observed vortex core switching whereby the polarity of a single vortex is reversed after collision with an N = 0 VA pair created by a burst of an applied alternating magnetic field.

Collisions of solitons and vortex rings in cylindrical Bose-Einstein condensates

Interactions of solitary waves in a cylindrically confined Bose-Einstein condensate are investigated by simulating their head-on collisions. Slow vortex rings and fast solitons are found to collide elastically contrary to the situation in the three-dimensional homogeneous Bose gas. Strongly inelastic collisions are absent for low density condensates but occur at higher densities for intermediate velocities. The scattering behaviour is rationalised by use of dispersion diagrams. During inelastic collisions, spherical shell-like structures of low density are formed and they eventually decay into depletion droplets with solitary wave features. The relation to similar shells observed in a recent experiment [Ginsberg et al. Phys Rev. Lett. 94, 040403 (2005)] is discussed.

Dynamics of Nontopological Solitons - Q Balls

We use numerical simulations and semi-analytical methods to investigate the stability and the interactions of nontopological stationary qball solutions. In the context of a simple model we map the parameter sectors of stability for a single qball and verify the result using numerical simulations of time evolution. The system of two interacting qballs is also studied in one and two space dimensions. We find that the system generically performs breather type oscillations with frequency equal to the difference of the internal qball frequencies. This result is shown to be consistent with the form of the qball interaction potential. Finally we perform simulations of qball scattering and show that the right angle scattering effect observed in topological soliton scattering in two dimensions, persists also in the case of qballs where no topologically conserved quantities are present. For relativistic collision velocities the qball charge is split into a forward and a right angle scattering component. As the collision velocity increases, the forward component gets amplified at the expense of the right angle component.
