On Bloch's map for torsion cycles over non-closed fields

We generalize Bloch's map on torsion cycles from algebraically closed fields to arbitrary fields. While Bloch's map over algebraically closed fields is injective for zero-cycles and for cycles of codimension at most two, we show that the generalization to arbitrary fields is only injective for cycles of codimension at most two but in general not for zero-cycles. Our result implies that Jannsen's cycle class map in integral $\ell$-adic continuous étale cohomology is in general not injective on torsion zero-cycles over finitely generated fields. This answers a question of Scavia and Suzuki.

Refined unramified cohomology of schemes

We introduce the notion of refined unramified cohomology of algebraic schemes and prove comparison theorems that identify some of these groups with cycle groups. This recovers for cycles of low codimensions on smooth projective varieties previous results of Bloch--Ogus, Colliot-Thélène--Voisin, Kahn, Voisin, and Ma. We combine our approach with the Bloch--Kato conjecture, proven by Voevodsky, to show that on a smooth complex projective variety, any homologically trivial torsion cycle with trivial Abel--Jacobi invariant has coniveau 1. This establishes a torsion version of a conjecture of Jannsen originally formulated with rational coefficients. We further show that the group of homologically trivial torsion cycles modulo algebraic equivalence has a finite filtration (by coniveau) such that the graded quotients are determined by higher Abel--Jacobi invariants that we construct. This may be seen as a variant for torsion cycles modulo algebraic equivalence of a conjecture of Green. We also prove $\ell$-adic analogues of these results over any field which contains all $\ell$-power roots of unity.

Zeros of one-forms and homologically trivial fibrations

We show that a conjecture of Kotschick about one-forms without zeros on compact Kähler manifolds follows in the case of simple Albanese torus from a conjecture of Bobadilla and Kollár about homologically trivial fibrations. As an application, we prove Kotschick's conjecture for compact Kähler manifolds X whose first betti number is at least 2dim(X)-2 and Albanese torus is simple.

Infinite torsion in Griffiths groups

We show that there are smooth complex projective varieties with infinite 2-torsion in their third Griffiths groups. It follows that the torsion subgroup of Griffiths groups is in general not finitely generated, thereby solving a problem of Schoen from 1992.

Equality in the Bogomolov--Miyaoka--Yau inequality in the non-general type case

We classify all minimal models X of dimension n, Kodaira dimension n-1 and with vanishing Chern number $c_1^{n-2}c_2(X)=0$. This solves a problem of Kollár. Completing previous work of Kollár and Grassi, we also show that there is a universal constant $ε>0$ such that any minimal threefold satisfies either $c_1c_2=0$ or $-c_1c_2>ε$. This settles completely a conjecture of Kollár.

Torsion orders of Fano hypersurfaces

We find new lower bounds on the torsion orders of very general Fano hypersurfaces over (uncountable) fields of arbitrary characteristic. Our results imply that unirational parametrizations of most Fano hypersurfaces need to have enormously large degree. Our results also hold in characteristic two, where they solve the rationality problem for hypersurfaces under a logarithmic degree bound, thereby extending a previous result of the author from characteristic different from two to arbitrary characteristic.

Holomorphic one-forms without zeros on threefolds

We show that a smooth complex projective threefold admits a holomorphic one-form without zeros if and only if the underlying real 6-manifold fibres smoothly over the circle, and we give a complete classification of all threefolds with that property. Our results prove a conjecture of Kotschick in dimension three.

Variation of stable birational types in positive characteristic

Let k be an uncountable algebraically closed field and let Y be a smooth projective k-variety which does not admit a decomposition of the diagonal. We prove that Y is not stably birational to a very general hypersurface of any given degree and dimension. We use this to study the variation of the stable birational types of Fano hypersurfaces over fields of arbitrary characteristic. This had been initiated by Shinder, whose method works in characteristic zero.

On deformations of quintic and septic hypersurfaces

An old question of Mori asks whether in dimension at least three, any smooth specialization of a hypersurface of prime degree is again a hypersurface. A positive answer to this question is only known in degrees two and three. In this paper, we settle the case of quintic hypersurfaces (in arbitrary dimension) as well as the case of septics in dimension three. Our results follow from numerical characterizations of the corresponding hypersurfaces. In the case of quintics, this extends famous work of Horikawa who analysed deformations of quintic surfaces.

Zeros of holomorphic one-forms and topology of Kähler manifolds

A conjecture of Kotschick predicts that a compact Kähler manifold $X$ fibres smoothly over the circle if and only if it admits a holomorphic one-form without zeros. In this paper we develop an approach to this conjecture and verify it in dimension two. In a joint paper with Hao, we use our approach to prove Kotschick's conjecture for smooth projective threefolds.

Stably irrational hypersurfaces of small slopes

Let k be an uncountable field of characteristic different from two. We show that a very general hypersurface of dimension N>2 and degree at least $\log_2N +2$ is not stably rational over the algebraic closure of k.

The construction problem for Hodge numbers modulo an integer

For any positive integer m and any dimension n, we show that any n-dimensional Hodge diamond with values in Z/mZ is attained by the Hodge numbers of an n-dimensional smooth complex projective variety. As a corollary, there are no polynomial relations among the Hodge numbers of n-dimensional smooth complex projective varieties besides the ones induced by the Hodge symmetries, which answers a question raised by Kollár in 2012.

Chern numbers of uniruled threefolds

In this paper we show that the Chern numbers of a smooth Mori fibre space in dimension three are bounded in terms of the underlying topological manifold. We also generalise a theorem of Cascini and the second named author on the boundedness of Chern numbers of certain threefolds to the case of negative Kodaira dimension.

The Kuga-Satake construction under degeneration

We extend the Kuga-Satake construction to the case of limit mixed Hodge structures of K3 type. We use this to study the geometry and Hodge theory of degenerations of Kuga-Satake abelian varieties, associated to polarized variations of K3 type Hodge structures over the punctured disc.

On the number and boundedness of log minimal models of general type

We show that the number of marked minimal models of an n-dimensional smooth complex projective variety of general type can be bounded in terms of its volume, and, if n=3, also in terms of its Betti numbers. For an n-dimensional projective klt pair (X,D) with $K_X+D$ big, we show more generally that the number of its weak log canonical models can be bounded in terms of the coefficients of D and the volume of $K_X+D$. We further show that all n-dimensional projective klt pairs (X,D), such that $K_X+D$ is big and nef of fixed volume and such that the coefficients of D are contained in a given DCC set, form a bounded family. It follows that in any dimension, minimal models of general type and bounded volume form a bounded family.

On the rationality problem for quadric bundles

We classify all positive integers n and r such that (stably) non-rational complex r-fold quadric bundles over rational n-folds exist. We show in particular that for any n and r, a wide class of smooth r-fold quadric bundles over projective n-space are not stably rational if r lies in the interval from $2^{n-1}-1$ to $2^{n}-2$. In our proofs we introduce a generalization of the specialization method of Voisin and Colliot-Thélène--Pirutka which avoids universally $CH_0$-trivial resolutions of singularities.

Quadric surface bundles over surfaces and stable rationality

We prove a general specialization theorem which implies stable irrationality for a wide class of quadric surface bundles over rational surfaces. As an application, we solve with the exception of two cases, the stable rationality problem for any very general complex projective quadric surface bundle over the projective plane, given by a symmetric matrix of homogeneous polynomials. Both exceptions degenerate over a plane sextic curve and the corresponding double cover is a K3 surface.
