Kaehler structures on spin 6-manifolds

We show that many spin 6-manifolds have the homotopy type but not the homeomorphism type of a Kaehler manifold. Moreover, for given Betti numbers, there are only finitely many deformation types and hence topological types of smooth complex projectve spin threefolds of general type. Finally, on a fixed spin 6-manifold, the Chern numbers take on only finitely many values on all possible Kaehler structures.

Generic vanishing and minimal cohomology classes on abelian fivefolds

We classify GV-subschemes of five-dimensional ppavs, showing that they exist only on Jacobians of curves and intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds, and confirming a conjecture of Pareschi--Popa in this case. The result is implied by a more general statement about subvarieties of minimal cohomology class whose sum is a theta divisor.

Decomposable theta divisors and generic vanishing

We study ample divisors X with only rational singularities on abelian varieties that decompose into a sum of two lower dimensional subvarieties, X=V+W. For instance, we prove an optimal lower bound on the degree of the corresponding addition map, and show that the minimum can only be achieved if X is a theta divisor. Conjecturally, the latter happens only on Jacobians of curves and intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds. As an application, we prove that nondegenerate generic vanishing subschemes of indecomposable principally polarized abelian varieties are automatically reduced and irreducible, have the expected geometric genus, and property (P) with respect to their theta duals.

Algebraic structures with unbounded Chern numbers

We determine all Chern numbers of smooth complex projective varieties of dimension at least four which are determined up to finite ambiguity by the underlying smooth manifold. We also give an upper bound on the dimension of the space of linear combinations of Chern numbers with that property and prove its optimality in dimension four.

Some low-dimensional hypersurfaces that are not stably rational

Using Voisin's method we prove that a very general hypersurface of degree at least 4 in complex projective space of dimension 6, 7, 8 or 9 is not stably rational and so, in particular, not rational. We obtain the same conclusion for the double covering of projective space of dimension 6, 7, 8 or 9, branched along a very general quartic hypersurface. On the other hand, such double coverings as well as general quartic hypersurfaces of dimension at least 5 are known to be unirational.

Theta divisors with curve summands and the Schottky problem

We prove the following converse of Riemann's Theorem: let (A,Θ) be an indecomposable principally polarized abelian variety whose theta divisor can be written as a sum of a curve and a codimension two subvariety Θ=C+Y. Then C is smooth, A is the Jacobian of C, and Y is a translate of W_{g-2}(C). As applications, we determine all theta divisors that are dominated by a product of curves and characterize Jacobians by the existence of a d-dimensional subvariety with curve summand whose twisted ideal sheaf is a generic vanishing sheaf.

On the construction problem for Hodge numbers

For any symmetric collection of natural numbers h^{p,q} with p+q=k, we construct a smooth complex projective variety whose weight k Hodge structure has these Hodge numbers; if k=2m is even, then we have to impose that h^{m,m} is bigger than some quadratic bound in m. Combining these results for different weights, we solve the construction problem for the truncated Hodge diamond under two additional assumptions. Our results lead to a complete classification of all nontrivial dominations among Hodge numbers of Kaehler manifolds.

Multiplicative sub-Hodge structures of conjugate varieties

For any subfield K of the complex numbers which is not contained in an imaginary quadratic number field, we construct conjugate varieties whose algebras of K-rational (p,p)-classes are not isomorphic. This compares to the Hodge conjecture which predicts isomorphisms when K is contained in an imaginary quadratic number field; additionally, it shows that the complex Hodge structure on the complex cohomology algebra is not invariant under the Aut(\C)-action on varieties. In our proofs, we find simply connected conjugate varieties whose multilinear intersection forms on their second real cohomology groups are not (weakly) isomorphic. Using these, we detect non-homeomorphic conjugate varieties for any fundamental group and in any birational equivalence class of dimension at least 10.

Dualization invariance and a new complex elliptic genus

We define a new elliptic genus psi on the complex bordism ring. With coefficients in Z[1/2], we prove that it induces an isomorphism of the complex bordism ring modulo the ideal which is generated by all differences P(E)-P(E*) of projective bundles and their duals onto a polynomial ring on 4 generators in degrees 2, 4, 6 and 8. As an alternative geometric description of psi, we prove that it is the universal genus which is multiplicative in projective bundles over Calabi-Yau 3-folds. With the help of the q-expansion of modular forms we will see that for a complex manifold M, the value psi(M) is a holomorphic Euler characteristic. We also compare psi with Krichever-Hoehn's complex elliptic genus and see that their only common specializations are Ochanine's elliptic genus and the chi_y-genus.
