NLO QCD corrections to pp -> top anti-top + jet + X

We discuss the production of top--anti-top quark pairs in association with a hard jet at the Tevatron and at the LHC and we report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to this process. Numerical results for the top--anti-top+jet cross section and the forward--backward charge asymmetry are presented. The corrections stabilize the leading-order prediction for the cross section. In contrast, the charge asymmetry receives large corrections. The dependence of the cross section as well as the asymmetry on the minimum transverse momenta used to define the additional jet is studied in detail for the Tevatron.

Symmetry breaking of gauge theories down to Abelian sub-groups

I re-derive the lowest order effective Lagrangian for electro-weak symmetry breaking without the use of Goldstone's theorem for spontaneously broken global symmetries and without the assumption of a custodial symmetry. I consider the breaking of a local symmetry with gauge group G down to an Abelian sub-group K and construct a gauge-invariant functional with one free parameter v, such that v=0 corresponds to a gauge theory with gauge group G, while v --> infinity corresponds to a gauge theory with gauge group K.

Recent developments for multi-leg QCD amplitudes with massive particles

We review the extension of modern techniques for the calculation of helicity amplitudes in QCD to massive particles. The focus is on the use of supersymmetric Ward identites that relate amplitudes with massive quarks to those with massive scalars, the application of on-shell recursion relations to amplitudes with massive quarks and an extension of the CSW rules to massive scalars.

Resolution of singularities for multi-loop integrals

We report on a program for the numerical evaluation of divergent multi-loop integrals. The program is based on iterated sector decomposition. We improve the original algorithm of Binoth and Heinrich such that the program is guaranteed to terminate. The program can be used to compute numerically the Laurent expansion of divergent multi-loop integrals regulated by dimensional regularisation. The symbolic and the numerical steps of the algorithm are combined into one program.

Parton showers from the dipole formalism

We present an implementation of a parton shower algorithm for hadron colliders and electron-positron colliders based on the dipole factorisation formulae. The algorithm treats initial-state partons on equal footing with final-state partons. We implemented the algorithm for massless and massive partons.

Automated calculations for multi-leg processes

The search for signals of new physics at the forthcoming LHC experiments involves the analysis of final states characterised by a high number of hadronic jets or identified particles. Precise theoretical predictions for these processes require the computation of scattering amplitudes with a large number of external particles and beyond leading order in perturbation theory. The complexity of a calculation grows with the number of internal loops as well as with the number of external legs. Automatisation of at least next-to-leading order calculations for LHC processes is therefore a timely task. I will discuss various approaches.

Feynman integrals and multiple polylogarithms

In this talk I review the connections between Feynman integrals and multiple polylogarithms. After an introductory section on loop integrals I discuss the Mellin-Barnes transformation and shuffle algebras. In a subsequent section multiple polylogarithms are introduced. Finally, I discuss how certain Feynman integrals evaluate to multiple polylogarithms.

On-shell recursion relations for all Born QCD amplitudes

We consider on-shell recursion relations for all Born QCD amplitudes. This includes amplitudes with several pairs of quarks and massive quarks. We give a detailed description on how to shift the external particles in spinor space and clarify the allowed helicities of the shifted legs. We proof that the corresponding meromorphic functions vanish at z --> infinity. As an application we obtain compact expressions for helicity amplitudes including a pair of massive quarks, one negative helicity gluon and an arbitrary number of positive helicity gluons.

The forward-backward asymmetry at NNLO revisited

I reconsider the forward-backward asymmetry for flavoured quarks in electron-positron annihilation. I suggest an infrared-safe definition of this observable, such that the asymmetry may be computed in perturbative QCD with massless quarks. With this definition, the first and second order QCD corrections are computed.

NNLO corrections to 2-jet observables in electron-positron annihilation

I report on a numerical program, which can be used to calculate any infra-red safe two-jet observable in electron-positron annihilation to next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant alpha_s. The calculation is based on the subtraction method. The result for the two-jet cross section is compared to the literature.

Status of jet cross sections to NNLO

I review the state-of-the-art for fully differential numerical NNLO programs. Topics which are covered include the calculation of two-loop amplitudes, multiple polylogarithms, cancellation of infra-red divergences at NNLO and the efficient generation of the phase space. Numerical results for e+ e- --> 2 jets are also discussed.

The Art of Computing Loop Integrals

A perturbative approach to quantum field theory involves the computation of loop integrals, as soon as one goes beyond the leading term in the perturbative expansion. First I review standard techniques for the computation of loop integrals. In a second part I discuss more advanced algorithms. For these algorithms algebraic methods play an important role. A special section is devoted to multiple polylogarithms. I tried to make these notes self-contained and accessible both to physicists and mathematicians.

SUSY Ward identities for multi-gluon helicity amplitudes with massive quarks

We use supersymmetric Ward identities to relate multi-gluon helicity amplitudes involving a pair of massive quarks to amplitudes with massive scalars. This allows to use the recent results for scalar amplitudes with an arbitrary number of gluons obtained by on-shell recursion relations to obtain scattering amplitudes involving top quarks.

A comparison of efficient methods for the computation of Born gluon amplitudes

We compare four different methods for the numerical computation of the pure gluonic amplitudes in the Born approximation. We are in particular interested in the efficiency of the various methods as the number n of the external particles increases. In addition we investigate the numerical accuracy in critical phase space regions. The methods considered are based on (i) Berends-Giele recurrence relations, (ii) scalar diagrams, (iii) MHV vertices and (iv) BCF recursion relations.

Automated computation of spin- and colour-correlated Born matrix elements

I report on an implementation of an algorithm for the automated numerical calculation of spin- and colour-correlated Born matrix elements in QCD. These spin- and colour-correlated matrix elements are needed for NLO calculations in combination with the subtraction method. Both massless and massive quarks are considered. There are no restrictions on the number of external particles. As a trivial sub-case, the algorithm also applies to Born matrix elements without any correlations. These are sufficient for leading order calculations.

Born amplitudes in QCD from scalar diagrams

We review recent developments for the calculation of Born amplitudes in QCD. This includes the computation of gluon helicity amplitudes from MHV vertices and an approach based on scalar propagators and a set of three- and four-valent vertices. The latter easily generalizes to amplitudes with any number of quark pairs. The quarks may be massless or massive.

Scalar diagrammatic rules for Born amplitudes in QCD

We show that all Born amplitudes in QCD can be calculated from scalar propagators and a set of three- and four-valent vertices. In particular, our approach includes amplitudes with any number of quark pairs. The quarks may be massless or massive. The proof of the formalism is given entirely within quantum field theory.
