Automated computation of one-loop integrals in massless theories

We consider one-loop tensor and scalar integrals, which occur in a massless quantum field theory and we report on the implementation into a numerical program of an algorithm for the automated computation of these one-loop integrals. The number of external legs of the loop integrals is not restricted. All calculations are done within dimensional regularization.

Numerical evaluation of multiple polylogarithms

Multiple polylogarithms appear in analytic calculations of higher order corrections in quantum field theory. In this article we study the numerical evaluation of multiple polylogarithms. We provide algorithms, which allow the evaluation for arbitrary complex arguments and without any restriction on the weight. We have implemented these algorithms with arbitrary precision arithmetic in C++ within the GiNaC framework.

Status of NNLO 3-jet calculations

The process e+ e- -> 3 jets offers the opportunity to measure the strong coupling constant. For an accurate determination, precise theoretical calculations are necessary. I will give an overview on the status of the next-to-next-to-leading order calculations.

QED corrections to the evolution of parton distributions

We study the systematic inclusion of QED corrections in the evolution of parton distributions. O(alpha) corrections modify the evolution equation for parton distributions. They introduce additional parton distributions, like the photon distribution in the nucleon, and lead to additional mixing effects. We discuss the modifications for a realistic model of N_f,up up-type flavours and N_f,down down-type flavours. We have implemented these corrections into a numerical program and we quantify the size of these effects in a toy model. The corrections reach the order of 1%.

Expansion around half-integer values, binomial sums and inverse binomial sums

I consider the expansion of transcendental functions in a small parameter around rational numbers. This includes in particular the expansion around half-integer values. I present algorithms which are suitable for an implementation within a symbolic computer algebra system. The method is an extension of the technique of nested sums. The algorithms allow in addition the evaluation of binomial sums, inverse binomial sums and generalizations thereof.

Hopf algebra structures in particle physics

In the recent years, Hopf algebras have been introduced to describe certain combinatorial properties of quantum field theories. I will give a basic introduction to these algebras and review some occurrences in particle physics.

Cancellation of infrared divergences at NNLO

Perturbative calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order for multi-particle final states require a method to cancel infrared singularities. I discuss how to setup the subtraction method at NNLO.

The massless two-loop two-point function

We consider the massless two-loop two-point function with arbitrary powers of the propagators and derive a representation, from which we can obtain the Laurent expansion to any desired order in the dimensional regularization parameter eps. As a side product, we show that in the Laurent expansion of the two-loop integral only rational numbers and multiple zeta values occur. Our method of calculation obtains the two-loop integral as a convolution product of two primitive one-loop integrals. We comment on the generalization of this product structure to higher loop integrals.

Subtraction terms for one-loop amplitudes with one unresolved parton

Fully differential next-to-next-to-leading order calculations require a method to cancel infrared singularities. In a previous publication, I discussed the general setup for the subtraction method at NNLO. In this paper I give all subtraction terms for electron-positron annihilation associated with one-loop amplitudes with one unresolved parton. These subtraction terms are integrated within dimensional regularization over the unresolved one-particle phase space. The results can be used with all variants of dimensional regularization (conventional dimensional regularization, the 't Hooft-Veltman scheme and the four-dimensional scheme).

gTybalt - a free computer algebra system

This article documents the free computer algebra system "gTybalt". The program is build on top of other packages, among others GiNaC, TeXmacs and Root. It offers the possibility of interactive symbolic calculations within the C++ programming language. Mathematical formulae are visualized using TeX fonts.

Subtraction terms at NNLO

Perturbative calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order for multi-particle final states require a method to cancel infrared singularities. I discuss the subtraction method at NNLO. As a concrete example I consider the leading-colour contributions to e+ e- --> 2 jets. This is the simplest example which exhibits all essential features. For this example, explicit subtraction terms are given, which approximate the four-parton and three-parton final states in all double and single unresolved limits, such that the subtracted matrix elements can be integrated numerically.

Computer Algebra in Particle Physics

These lectures given to graduate students in theoretical particle physics, provide an introduction to the ``inner workings'' of computer algebra systems. Computer algebra has become an indispensable tool for precision calculations in particle physics. A good knowledge of the basics of computer algebra systems allows one to exploit these systems more efficiently.

Two-loop amplitudes with nested sums: Fermionic contributions to e+ e- --> q qbar g

We present the calculation of the nf-contributions to the two-loop amplitude for e+ e- --> q qbar g and give results for the full one-loop amplitude to order eps^2 in the dimensional regularization parameter. Our results agree with those recently obtained by Garland et al.. The calculation makes extensive use of an efficient method based on nested sums to calculate two-loop integrals with arbitrary powers of the propagators. The use of nested sums leads in a natural way to multiple polylogarithms with simple arguments, which allow a straightforward analytic continuation.

Fast evolution of parton distributions

I report on a numerical program for the evolution of parton distributions. The program uses the Mellin-transform method with an optimized contour. Due to this optimized contour the program needs only a few evaluations of the integrand and is therefore extremely fast. In addition, the program can also be used to reproduce the results of the x-space method.

NLO Partonic Event Generators

Merging the benefits of an NLO calculation with event generators is a topic of current interest. Among other things, it is advantageous to be able to generate unweighted events according to NLO matrix elements. I report on an algorithm which generates a sequence of unweighted momentum configurations, each configuration containing either n or n+1 four-vectors, such that for any infrared safe observable the average over these configurations coincides with the NLO calculation up to errors of a resolution variable.

Symbolic Expansion of Transcendental Functions

Higher transcendental function occur frequently in the calculation of Feynman integrals in quantum field theory. Their expansion in a small parameter is a non-trivial task. We report on a computer program which allows the systematic expansion of certain classes of functions. The algorithms are based on the Hopf algebra of nested sums. The program is written in C++ and uses the GiNaC library.
