Universal scaling laws for dispersion interactions

We study the scaling behaviour of dispersion potentials and forces under very general conditions. We prove that a rescaling of an arbitrary geometric arrangement by a factor a changes the atom-atom and atom-body potentials in the long-distance limit by factors 1/a^7 and 1/a^4, respectively and the Casimir force per unit area by 1/a^4. In the short-distance regime, electric and magnetic bodies lead to different scaling behaviours. As applications, we present scaling functions for two atom-body potentials and display the equipotential lines of a plate-assisted two-atom potential.

Temperature-invariant Casimir-Polder forces despite large thermal photon numbers

We demonstrate that Casimir-Polder potentials can be entirely independent of temperature even when allowing for the thermal photon numbers to become large at the relevant molecular transition frequencies. This statement holds for potentials that are due to low-energy transitions of a molecule placed near a plane metal surface. For a molecule in an energy eigenstate, the temperature-invariance is a consequence of strong cancellations between nonresonant potential components and those due to evanescent waves. For a molecule with a single dominant transition in a thermal state, upward and downward transitions combine to a temperature-independent potential. The results are contrasted with the case of an atom whose potential exhibits a regime of linear temperature-dependence. Contact to the Casimir force between a weakly dielectric and a metal plate is made.

Casimir-Polder interaction between an atom and a small magnetodielectric sphere

On the basis of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics and point-scattering techniques, we derive a closed expression for the Casimir-Polder force between a ground-state atom and a small magnetodielectric sphere in an arbitrary environment. In order to allow for the presence of both bodies and media, local-field corrections are taken into account. Our results are compared with the known van der Waals force between two ground-state atoms. To continuously interpolate between the two extreme cases of a single atom and a macroscopic sphere, we also derive the force between an atom and a sphere of variable radius that is embedded in an Onsager local-field cavity. Numerical examples illustrate the theory.

Nonequilibrium thermal Casimir-Polder forces

We study the nonequilibrium Casimir-Polder force on an atom prepared in an incoherent superposition of internal energy-eigenstates, which is placed in a magnetoelectric environment of nonuniform temperature. After solving the coupled atom--field dynamics within the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, we derive a general expression for the thermal Casimir-Polder force.

Enhancement of thermal Casimir-Polder potentials of ground-state polar molecules in a planar cavity

We analyze the thermal Casimir-Polder potential experienced by a ground-state molecule in a planar cavity and investigate the prospects for using such a set-up for molecular guiding. The resonant atom-field interaction associated with this non-equilibrium situation manifests itself in oscillating, standing-wave components of the potential. While the respective potential wells are normally too shallow to be useful, they may be amplified by a highly reflecting cavity whose width equals a half-integer multiple of a particular molecular transition frequency. We find that with an ideal choice of molecule and the use of ultra-high reflectivity Bragg mirror cavity, it may be possible to boost the potential by up to two orders of magnitude. We analytically derive the scaling of the potential depth as a function of reflectivity and analyze how it varies with temperature and molecular properties. It is also shown how the potential depth decreases for standing waves with a larger number of nodes. Finally, we investigate the lifetime of the molecular ground state in a thermal environment and find that it is not greatly influenced by the cavity and remains in the order of several seconds.

Impact of amplifying media on the Casimir force

On the basis of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, a theory of Casimir forces in the presence of on linearly amplifying bodies is presented which provides a consistent framework for studying the effect of, e.g., amplifying left-handed metamaterials on dispersion forces. A general formula for the Casimir force acting on an amplifying body is derived. It is shown that the force can be given in terms of the classical Green tensor and that it can be decomposed into a resonant component associated with emission processes and an off-resonant Lifshitz-type component looking formally the same as for a purely absorbing body. It is explicitly demonstrated that the result generalizes microscopic approaches beyond the perturbative domain: In the dilute-gas limit, the force acting on an amplifying body reduces to a sum over the Casimir--Polder forces acting on the excited body atoms.

Surface-induced heating of cold polar molecules

We study the rotational and vibrational heating of diatomic molecules placed near a surface at finite temperature on the basis of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics. The internal molecular evolution is governed by transition rates that depend on both temperature and position. Analytical and numerical methods are used to investigate the heating of several relevant molecules near various surfaces. We determine the critical distances at which the surface itself becomes the dominant source of heating and we investigate the transition between the long-range and short-range behaviour of the heating rates. A simple formula is presented that can be used to estimate the surface-induced heating rates of other molecules of interest. We also consider how the heating depends on the thickness and composition of the surface.

Macroscopic quantum electrodynamics and duality

We discuss under what conditions the duality between electric and magnetic fields is a valid symmetry of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics. It is shown that Maxwell's equations in the absence of free charges satisfy duality invariance on an operator level, whereas this is not true for Lorentz forces and atom--field couplings in general. We prove that derived quantities like Casimir forces, local-field corrected decay rates as well as van-der-Waals potentials are invariant with respect to a global exchange of electric and magnetic quantities. This exact symmetry can be used to deduce the physics of new configurations on the basis of already established ones.

Casimir-Polder forces on moving atoms

Polarisable atoms and molecules experience the Casimir-Polder force near magnetoelectric bodies, a force that is induced by quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field and the matter. Atoms and molecules in relative motion to a magnetoelectric surface experience an additional, velocity-dependent force. We present a full quantum-mechanical treatment of this force and identify a generalised Doppler effect, the time delay between photon emission and reabsorption, and the Roentgen interaction as its three sources. For ground-state atoms, the force is very small and always decelerating, hence commonly known as quantum friction. For atom and molecules in electronically excited states, on the contrary, both decelerating and accelerating forces can occur depending on the magnitude of the atomic transition frequency relative to the surface plasmon frequency.

Casimir force on amplifying bodies

Based on a unified approach to macroscopic QED that allows for the inclusion of amplification in a limited space and frequency range, we study the Casimir force as a Lorentz force on an arbitrary partially amplifying system of linearly locally responding (isotropic) magnetoelectric bodies. We demonstrate that the force on a weakly polarisable/magnetisable amplifying object in the presence of a purely absorbing environment can be expressed as a sum over the Casimir--Polder forces on the excited atoms inside the body. As an example, the resonant force between a plate consisting of a dilute gas of excited atoms and a perfect mirror is calculated.

Macroscopic QED - concepts and applications

In this article, we review the principles of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics and discuss a variety of applications of this theory to medium-assisted atom-field coupling and dispersion forces. The theory generalises the standard mode expansion of the electromagnetic fields in free space to allow for the presence of absorbing bodies. We show that macroscopic quantum electrodynamics provides the link between isolated atomic systems and magnetoelectric bodies, and serves as an important tool for the understanding of surface-assisted atomic relaxation effects and the intimately connected position-dependent energy shifts which give rise to Casimir-Polder and van der Waals forces.

Local-field corrected van der Waals potentials in magnetodielectric multilayer systems

Within the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics in linear, causal media, we study the van der Waals potentials of ground-state atoms in planar magnetodielectric host media. Our investigation extends earlier ones in two aspects: It allows for the atom to be embedded in a medium, thus covers many more realistic systems; and it takes account of the local-field correction. Two- and three-layer configurations are treated in detail both analytically and numerically. It is shown that an interplay of electric and magnetic properties in neighbouring media may give rise to potential wells or walls. Local-field corrections as high as 80% are found. By calculating the full potential including the translationally invariant and variant parts, we propose a way to estimate the (finite) value of the dispersion potential at the surface between two media. Connection with earlier work intended for biological applications is established.

Van-der-Waals potentials of paramagnetic atoms

We study single- and two-atom van der Waals interactions of ground-state atoms which are both polarizable and paramagnetizable in the presence of magneto-electric bodies within the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics. Starting from an interaction Hamiltonian that includes particle spins, we use leading-order perturbation theory for the van der Waals potentials expressed in terms of the polarizability and magnetizability of the atom(s). To allow for atoms embedded in media, we also include local-field corrections via the real-cavity model. The general theory is applied to the potential of a single atom near a half space and that of two atoms embedded in a bulk medium or placed near a sphere, respectively.

Van der Waals interaction and spontaneous decay of an excited atom in a superlens-type geometry

Within the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, the resonant van der Waals potential experienced by an excited two-level atom near a planar magneto-electric two-layer system consisting of a slab of left-handed material and a perfect mirror is studied. It is shown that disregarding of material absorption leads to unphysical results, with divergent values for the potential away from the surface. Under appropriate conditions, the setup is found to feature a barrier near the surface which can be employed to levitate particles or used as a trapping or cooling mechanism. Finally, the problem of spontaneous decay [J. Kästel and M. Fleischhauer, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{68}, 011804(R) (2005)] is revisited. Disregarding of absorption is shown to drastically falsify the dependence on the atomic position of the decay rate.

Dispersion forces and duality

We formulate a symmetry principle on the basis of the duality of electric and magnetic fields and apply it to dispersion forces. Within the context of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, we rigorously establish duality invariance for the free electromagnetic field in the presence of causal magnetoelectrics. Dispersion forces are given in terms of the Green tensor for the electromagnetic field and the atomic response functions. After discussing the behavior of the Green tensor under a duality transformation, we are able to show that Casimir forces on bodies in free space as well as local-field corrected Casimir-Polder and van der Waals forces are duality invariant.

Analytical results are obtained in the nonretarded and retarded distance regimes and numerical examples are given. We compare our findings with the potential of an excited atom near a left-handed superlens.

Local-field correction to one- and two-atom van der Waals interactions

Based on macroscopic quantum electrodynamics in linearly and causally responding media, we study the local-field corrected van der Waals potentials and forces for unpolarized ground-state atoms placed within a magnetoelectric medium of arbitrary size and shape. We start from general expressions for the van der Waals potentials in terms of the (classical) Green tensor of the electromagnetic field and the atomic polarizability and incorporate the local-field correction by means of the real-cavity model. In this context, special emphasis is given to the decomposition of the Green tensor into a medium part multiplied by a global local-field correction factor and, in the single-atom case, a part that only depends on the cavity characteristics. The result is used to derive general formulas for the local-field corrected van der Waals potentials and forces. As an application, we calculate the van der Waals potential between two ground-state atoms placed within magnetoelectric bulk material.

Casimir-Polder forces on excited atoms in the strong atom-field coupling regime

Based on macroscopic quantum electrodynamics in linear media, we develop a general theory of the resonant Casimir-Polder force on an excited two-level atom in the presence of arbitrary linear bodies, with special emphasis on the strong-coupling regime where reabsorption of an emitted photon can give rise to (vacuum) Rabi oscillations. We first derive a simple time-independent expression for the force by using a dressed-state approximation. For initially single-quantum excited atom-field systems we then study the dynamics of the force by starting from the Lorentz force and evaluating its average as a function of time. For strong atom-field coupling, we find that the force may undergo damped Rabi oscillations. The damping is due to the decay of both the atomic excitation and the field excitation, and both amplitude and mean value of the oscillations depend on the chosen initial state.
