Entropic Bounds For Unitary Testers and Mutually Unbiased Unitary Bases

We define the entropic bounds, i.e minimal uncertainty for pairs of unitary testers in distinguishing between unitary transformations not unlike the well known entropic bounds for observables. We show that in the case of specific sets of testers which pairwise saturate the trivial zero bound, the testers are all equivalent in the sense their statistics are the same. On the other hand, when maximal bounds are saturated by such sets of testers, the unitary operators would form unitary bases which are mutually unbiased. This resembles very much the role of mutually unbiased bases in maximizing the entropic bounds for observables. We show how such a bound can be useful in certain quantum cryptographic protocols.

Discriminating qubit amplitude damping channels

We address the issue of the discrimination between two-qubit amplitude damping channels by exploring several strategies. For the single-shot, we show that the excited state does not always give the optimal input, and that side entanglement assistance has limited benefit. On the contrary, feedback assistance from the environment is more beneficial. For the two-shot, we prove the in-utility of entangled inputs. Then focusing on individual (local) measurements, we find the optimal adaptive strategy.

Entanglement production in Einstein-Cartan theory

We study the entanglement production for Dirac and Klein-Gordon fields in an expanding spacetime characterized by the presence of torsion. Torsion is here considered according to the Einstein-Cartan theory with a conformally flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime. In this framework, torsion is seen as an external field, fulfilling precise constraints directly got from the cosmological constant principle. For Dirac field, we find that torsion increases the amount of entanglement. This turns out to be particularly evident for small values of particle momentum. We discuss the roles of Pauli exclusion principle in view of our results, and, in particular, we propose an interpretation of the two maxima that occur for the entanglement entropy in presence of torsion. For Klein-Gordon field, and differently from the Dirac case, the model can be exactly solved by adopting the same scale factor as in the Dirac case. Again, we show how torsion affects the amount of entanglement, providing a robust physical motivation behind the increase or decrease of entanglement entropy. A direct comparison of our findings is also discussed in view of previous results derived in absence of torsion. To this end, we give prominence on how our expectations would change in terms of the coupling between torsion and the scale factor for both Dirac and Klein-Gordon fields.

Capacities of Gaussian Quantum Channels with Passive Environment Assistance

Passive environment assisted communication takes place via a quantum channel modeled as a unitary interaction between the information carrying system and an environment, where the latter is controlled by a passive helper, who can set its initial state such as to assist sender and receiver, but not help actively by adjusting her behaviour depending on the message. Here we investigate the information transmission capabilities in this framework by considering Gaussian unitaries acting on Bosonic systems. We consider both quantum communication and classical communication with helper, as well as classical communication with free classical coordination between sender and helper (conferencing encoders). Concerning quantum communication, we prove general coding theorems with and without energy constraints, yielding multi-letter (regularized) expressions. In the search for cases where the capacity formula is computable, we look for Gaussian unitaries that are universally degradable or anti-degradable. However, we show that no Gaussian unitary yields either a degradable or anti-degradable channel for all environment states. On the other hand, restricting to Gaussian environment states, results in universally degradable unitaries, for which we thus can give single-letter quantum capacity formulas. Concerning classical communication, we prove a general coding theorem for the classical capacity under and energy constraint, given by a multi-letter expression. Furthermore, we derive an uncertainty-type relation between the classical capacities of the sender and the helper, helped respectively by the other party, showing a lower bound on the sum of the two capacities. Then, this is used to lower bound the classical information transmission rate in the scenario of classical communication between sender and helper.

Polar Codes for Quantum Reading

Quantum reading provides a general framework where to formulate the statistical discrimination of quantum channels. Several paths have been taken for such a problem. However, there is much to be done in the avenue of optimizing channel discrimination using classical codes. At least two open questions can be pointed to: how to construct low complexity encoding schemes that are interesting for channel discrimination and, more importantly, how to develop capacity-achieving protocols. The aim of this paper is to present a solution to these questions using polar codes. Firstly, we characterize the rate and reliability of the channels under polar encoding. We also show that the error probability of the scheme proposed decays exponentially with respect to the code length. Lastly, an analysis of the optimal quantum states to be used as probes is given.

Entropic Bounds as Uncertainty Measure of Unitary Operators

We reformulate the notion of uncertainty of pairs of unitary operators within the context of guessing games and derive an entropic uncertainty relation for a pair of such operators. We show how distinguishable operators are compatible while maximal incompatibility of unitary operators can be connected to bases for some subspace of operators which are mutually unbiased.

Classical capacities of memoryless but not identical quantum channels

We study quantum channels that vary on time in a deterministic way, that is, they change in an independent but not identical way from one to another use. We derive coding theorems for the classical entanglement assisted and unassisted capacities. We then specialize the theory to lossy bosonic quantum channels and show the existence of contrasting examples where capacities can or cannot be drawn from the limiting behavior of the lossy parameter.

Fine-Structure Classification of Multiqubit Entanglement by Algebraic Geometry

We present a fine-structure entanglement classification under stochastic local operation and classical communication (SLOCC) for multiqubit pure states. To this end, we employ specific algebraic-geometry tools that are SLOCC invariants, secant varieties, to show that for $n$-qubit systems there are $\lceil\frac{2^{n}}{n+1}\rceil$ entanglement families. By using another invariant, $\ell$-multilinear ranks, each family can be further split into a finite number of subfamilies. Not only does this method facilitate the classification of multipartite entanglement, but it also turns out to be operationally meaningful as it quantifies entanglement as a resource.

Exciting out-of-equilibrium states in macromolecules through light pumping

In the present paper we address the problem of the energy downconversion of the light absorbed by a protein into its internal vibrational modes. We consider the case in which the light receptors are fluorophores either naturally co-expressed with the protein or artificially covalently bound to some of its amino acids. In a recent work [Phys. Rev. X 8, 031061 (2018)], it has been experimentally found that by shining a laser light on the fluorophores attached to a protein the energy fed to it can be channeled into the normal mode of lowest frequency of vibration thus making the subunits of the protein coherently oscillate. Even if the phonon condensation phenomenon has been theoretically explained, the first step - the energy transfer from electronic excitation into phonon excitation - has been left open. The present work is aimed at filling this gap.

Enforcing dissipative entanglement by feedback

We study the possibility of enhancing the stationary entanglement achievable with two-qubit dissipating into a common environment by means of feedback. We contrast the effect of Markovian with Bayesian feedback and show that, depending on the initial state, the performance of the latter are from 16% to 33% superior.

Mutually Unbiased Unitary Bases of Operators on $d$-dimensional Hilbert Space

Analogous to the notion of mutually unbiased bases for Hilbert spaces, we consider mutually unbiased unitary bases (MUUB) for the space of operators, $M(d, \mathbb{C})$, acting on such Hilbert spaces. The notion of MUUB reflects the equiprobable guesses of unitary in one bases of $M(d, \mathbb{C})$ when estimating a unitary operator in another. Though, for prime dimension $d$, the maximal number of MUUBs is known to be $d^{2}-1$, there is no known recipe for constructing them, assuming they exist. However, one can always construct a minimum of three MUUBs, and the maximal number is approached for very large values of $d$. MUUBs can also exists for some $d$-dimensional subspace of $M(d, \mathbb{C})$ with the maximal number being $d$.

Quantum estimation through a bottleneck

We study the estimation of a single parameter characterizing families of unitary transformations acting on two systems. We consider the situation with the presence of bottleneck, i.e. only one of the systems can be measured to gather information. The estimation capabilities are related to unitaries' generators. In particular, we establish continuity of quantum Fisher information with respect to generators. Furthermore, we find conditions on the generators to achieve the same maximum quantum Fisher information we would have in the absence of bottleneck. We also discuss the usefulness of initial entanglement across the two systems as well as across multiple estimation instances.

Continuous Variable Quantum Perceptron

We present a model of Continuous Variable Quantum Perceptron (CVQP) whose architecture implements a classical perceptron. The necessary non-linearity is obtained via measuring the output qubit and using the measurement outcome as input to an activation function. The latter is chosen to be the so-called ReLu activation function by virtue of its practical feasibility and the advantages it provides in learning tasks. The encoding of classical data into realistic finitely squeezed states and the use of superposed (entangled) input states for specific binary problems are discussed.

On the security of two-way quantum key distribution

An author (arXiv:1709.09262 [quant-ph] (2017), Nanoscale Research Letters (2017) 12:552) has recently questioned the security of two-way quantum key distribution schemes by referring to attack strategies which leave no errors in the (raw) key shared by the legitimate parties. We argue that the article is based on a flawed understanding of the actual workings of a two-way protocol, thus the erroneous conclusions drawn thereof.

Entanglement in model independent cosmological scenario

We propose a \emph{model-independent} approach to study entanglement creation due to the dynamics between two asymptotic quantum regimes in the framework of homogeneous and isotropic universe. We realize it by Padé expansion to reconstruct the functional form of scale factor, rather than postulating it a priori. This amounts to fix the Padé approximants constraining the free parameters in terms of current cosmic observations. Assuming fermions, we solve the Dirac equation for massive particles and we investigate entanglement entropy in terms of modes $k$ and mass $m$. We consider two rational approximations of (1,1) and (1,2) orders, which turn out to be the most suitable choices for guaranteeing cosmic bounds. Our results show qualitative agreement with those known in literature and arising from toy models, but with sensible quantitative discrepancies. Moreover, our outcomes are model independent reconstructions which show that any higher orders departing from (1,1) do not significantly modify particle-antiparticle production (hence entanglement), if cosmic bounds are taken into account.

Persistent homology analysis of multiqubit entanglement

We introduce a homology-based technique for the analysis of multiqubit state vectors. In our approach, we associate state vectors to data sets by introducing a metric-like measure in terms of bipartite entanglement, and investigate the persistence of homologies at different scales. This leads to a novel classification of multiqubit entanglement. The relative occurrence frequency of various classes of entangled states is also shown.

Canonical divergence for measuring classical and quantum complexity

A new canonical divergence is put forward for generalizing an information-geometric measure of complexity for both, classical and quantum systems. On the simplex of probability measures it is proved that the new divergence coincides with the Kullback-Leibler divergence, which is used to quantify how much a probability measure deviates from the non-interacting states that are modeled by exponential families of probabilities. On the space of positive density operators, we prove that the same divergence reduces to the quantum relative entropy, which quantifies many-party correlations of a quantum state from a Gibbs family.

On Mutually Unbiased Unitary Bases in prime dimensional Hilbert spaces

Akin to the idea of complete sets of Mutually Unbiased Bases for prime dimensional Hilbert spaces, $\mathcal{H}_d$, we study its analogue for a $d$ dimensional subspace of $M (d,\mathbb{C})$, i.e. Mutually Unbiased Unitary Bases (MUUBs) comprising of unitary operators. We note an obvious isomorphism between the vector spaces and beyond that, we define a relevant monoid structure for $\mathcal{H}_d$ isomorphic to one for the subspace of $M (d,\mathbb{C})$. This provides us not only with the maximal number of such MUUBs, but also a recipe for its construction.
