Comparing metrics for mixed quantum states: Sjoqvist and Bures

It is known that there are infinitely many distinguishability metrics for mixed quantum states. This freedom, in turn, leads to metric-dependent interpretations of physically meaningful geometric quantities such as complexity and volume of quantum states. In this paper, we first present an explicit and unabridged mathematical discussion on the relation between the Sjoqvist metric and the Bures metric for arbitrary nondegenerate mixed quantum states, using the notion of decompositions of density operators by means of ensembles of pure quantum states. Then, to enhance our comprehension of the difference between these two metrics from a physics standpoint, we compare the formal expressions of these two metrics for arbitrary thermal quantum states specifying quantum systems in equilibrium with a reservoir at non-zero temperature. For illustrative purposes, we show the difference between these two metrics in the case of a simple physical system characterized by a spin-qubit in an arbitrarily oriented uniform and stationary external magnetic field in thermal equilibrium with a finite-temperature bath. Finally, we compare the Bures and Sjoqvist metrics in terms of their monotonicity property.

On the capacity of a quantum perceptron for storing biased patterns

Although different architectures of quantum perceptrons have been recently put forward, the capabilities of such quantum devices versus their classical counterparts remain debated. Here, we consider random patterns and targets independently distributed with biased probabilities and investigate the storage capacity of a continuous quantum perceptron model that admits a classical limit, thus facilitating the comparison of performances. Such a more general context extends a previous study of the quantum storage capacity where using statistical mechanics techniques in the limit of a large number of inputs, it was proved that no quantum advantages are to be expected concerning the storage properties. This outcome is due to the fuzziness inevitably introduced by the intrinsic stochasticity of quantum devices. We strengthen such an indication by showing that the possibility of indefinitely enhancing the storage capacity for highly correlated patterns, as it occurs in a classical setting, is instead prevented at the quantum level.

Stabilizer codes for Open Quantum Systems

The Lindblad master equation describes the evolution of a large variety of open quantum systems. An important property of some open quantum systems is the existence of decoherence-free subspaces. A quantum state from a decoherence-free subspace will evolve unitarily. However, there is no procedural and optimal method for constructing a decoherence-free subspace. In this paper, we develop tools for constructing decoherence-free stabilizer codes for open quantum systems governed by Lindblad master equation. This is done by pursuing an extension of the stabilizer formalism beyond the celebrated group structure of Pauli error operators. We then show how to utilize decoherence-free stabilizer codes in quantum metrology in order to attain the Heisenberg limit scaling with low computational complexity.

Geometry of the $p$-adic special orthogonal group $SO(3)_p$

We derive explicitly the structural properties of the $p$-adic special orthogonal groups in dimension three, for all primes $p$, and, along the way, the two-dimensional case. In particular, starting from the unique definite quadratic form in three dimensions (up to linear equivalence and rescaling), we show that every element of $SO(3)_p$ is a rotation around an axis. An important part of the analyis is the classification of all definite forms in two dimensions, yielding a description of the rotation subgroups around any fixed axis, which all turn out to be abelian and parametrised naturally by the projective line. Furthermore, we find that for odd primes $p$, the entire group $SO(3)_p$ admits a representation in terms of Cardano angles of rotations around the reference axes, in close analogy to the real orthogonal case. However, this works only for certain orderings of the product of rotations around the coordinate axes, depending on the prime; furthermore, there is no general Euler angle decomposition. For $p=2$, no Euler or Cardano decomposition exists.

Planar Black Holes in Holographic Axion Gravity: Islands, Page Times, and Scrambling Times

The present work investigates the entanglement entropies of the Hawking radiations, the Page times, and the scrambling times, for the eternal planar black holes in the holographic axion gravity. The solutions correspond to a new class of charged black holes, because the boundary diffeomorphism is broken due to the graviton mass induced by the axion fields in the bulk. The information theoretical aspects of these black hole solutions is determined upon applying the island rule for the entanglement entropy. Like non-extremal charged black holes, the radiation entropy grows linearly in the no-island configurations, while is saturated at late times by asymptotic values set by the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in the island configurations, with the boundary being located slightly outside the outer horizon. In particular, for the extremal black planes of holographic axion gravity, we find that: (a) the entanglement entropy of the Hawking radiation is ill-defined at the early times when the island is absent; (b) it tends to a distinctive constant at the late times; (c) the late-time location of the island is indeed universal. Moreover, we investigate how the Page time is affected by the holographic massive gravity deformation. For neutral solutions at the small deformation parameter, and for charged solutions with almost-extremal deformation parameter, we find that the Page transition happens at earlier times.

Trace class operators and states in p-adic quantum mechanics

Within the framework of quantum mechanics over a quadratic extension of the non-Archimedean field of p-adic numbers, we provide a definition of a quantum state relying on a general algebraic approach and on a p-adic model of probability theory. As in the standard complex case, a distinguished set of physical states are related to a notion of trace for a certain class of bounded operators and, in fact, we show that one can define a suitable space of trace class operators in the non-Archimedean setting, as well. The analogies, but also the several (highly non-trivial) differences, with respect to the case of standard quantum mechanics in a complex Hilbert space are analyzed.

Modeling black hole evaporative mass evolution via radiation from moving mirrors

We investigate the evaporation of an uncharged and non-rotating black hole (BH) in vacuum, by taking into account the effects given by the shrinking of the horizon area. These include the back-reaction on the metric and other smaller contributions arising from quantum fields in curved spacetime. Our approach is facilitated by the use of an analog accelerating moving mirror. We study the consequences of this modified evaporation on the BH entropy. Insights are provided on the amount of information obtained from a BH by considering non-equilibrium thermodynamics and the non-thermal part of Hawking radiation.

Energy-constrained LOCC-assisted quantum capacity of bosonic dephasing channel

We study the LOCC-assisted quantum capacity of bosonic dephasing channel with energy constraint on input states. We start our analysis by focusing on the energy-constrained squashed entanglement of the channel, which is an upper bound for the energy-constrained LOCC-assisted quantum capacity. As computing energy-constrained squashed entanglement of the channel is challenging due to a double optimization (over the set of density matrices and the isometric extensions of a squashing channel), we first derive an upper bound for it, and then we discuss how tight that bound is for energy-constrained LOCC-assisted quantum capacity of bosonic dephasing channel. We prove that the optimal input state is diagonal in the Fock basis. Furthermore, we prove that for a generic channel, the optimal squashing channel belongs to the set of symmetric quantum Markov chain inducer (SQMCI) channels of the channel system-environment output, provided that such a set is non-empty. With supporting arguments, we conjecture that this is instead the case for the bosonic dephasing channel. Hence, for it we analyze two explicit examples of squashing channels which are not SQMCI, but are symmetric. Through them, we derive explicit upper and lower bounds for the energy-constrained LOCC-assisted quantum capacity of the bosonic dephasing channel in terms of its quantum capacity with different noise parameters. As the difference between upper and lower bounds is at most of the order $10^{-1}$, we conclude that the bounds are tight. Hence we provide a very good estimation of the LOCC-assisted quantum capacity of the bosonic dephasing channel.

An approach to $p$-adic qubits from irreducible representations of $SO(3)_p$

We introduce the notion of $p$-adic quantum bit ($p$-qubit) in the context of the $p$-adic quantum mechanics initiated and developed by Volovich and his followers. In this approach, physics takes place in three-dimensional $p$-adic space rather than Euclidean space. Based on our prior work describing the $p$-adic special orthogonal group, we outline a programme to classify its continuous unitary projective representations, which can be interpreted as a theory of $p$-adic angular momentum. The $p$-adic quantum bit arises from the irreducible representations of minimal nontrivial dimension two, of which we construct examples for all primes $p$.

Discrimination of dephasing channels

The problem of dephasing channel discrimination is addressed for finite-dimensional systems. In particular, the optimization with respect to input states without energy constraint is solved analytically for qubit, qutrit and ququart. Additionally, it is shown that resorting to side entanglement assisted strategy is completely useless in this case.

Geometric corrections to cosmological entanglement

We investigate entanglement production by inhomogeneous perturbations over a homogeneous and isotropic cosmic background, demonstrating that the interplay between quantum and geometric effects can have relevant consequences on entanglement entropy, with respect to homogeneous scenarios. To do so, we focus on a conformally coupled scalar field and discuss how geometric production of scalar particles leads to entanglement. Perturbatively, at first order we find oscillations in entropy correction, whereas at second order the underlying geometry induces mode-mixing on entanglement production. We thus quantify entanglement solely due to geometrical contribution and compare our outcomes with previous findings. We characterize the geometric contribution through geometric (quasi)-particles, interpreted as dark matter candidates.

Thermodynamic length, geometric efficiency and Legendre invariance

Thermodynamic length is a metric distance between equilibrium thermodynamic states that asymptotically bounds the dissipation induced by a finite time transformation of a thermodynamic system. By means of thermodynamic length, we first evaluate the departures from ideal to real gases in geometric thermodynamics with and without Legendre invariance. In particular, we investigate ideal and real gases in the Ruppeiner and geometrothermodynamic formalisms. Afterwards, we formulate a strategy to relate thermodynamic lengths to efficiency of thermodynamic systems in both the aforementioned frameworks in the working assumption of small deviations from ideality. In this respect, we propose a geometric efficiency definition built up in analogy to quantum thermodynamic systems. We show the result that this efficiency is higher for geometrothermodynamic fluids. Moreover, we stress this efficiency could be used as a novel geometric way to distinguish ideal from non-ideal thermal behaviors. In such a way, it could be useful to quantify deviations from ideality for a variety of real gases. Finally, we discuss the corresponding applications of our recipe to classical thermodynamic systems, noticing that our findings could help geometrically grasping the nature of different metrizations on manifolds of equilibrium thermal states.

Quantum communication through a partially reflecting accelerating mirror

Motivated by the fact that the null-shell of a collapsing black hole can be described by a perfectly reflecting accelerating mirror, we investigate an extension of this model to mirror semi-transparency and derive a general implicit expression for the corresponding Bogoliubov coefficients. Then, we turn this into an explicit analytical form by focusing on mirrors that are accelerated via an impulsive force. From the so-obtained Bogoliubov coefficients we derive the particle production. Finally, we realize the field coming from left-past spacetime region, passing through the semitransparent moving mirror and ending up to right-future spacetime region as undergoing the action of a Gaussian quantum channel. We study the transmission and noisy generation properties of this channel, relating them to the Bogoliubov coefficients of the mirror's motion, through which we evaluate capacities in transmitting classical and quantum information.

Pattern capacity of a single quantum perceptron

Recent developments in Quantum Machine Learning have seen the introduction of several models to generalize the classical perceptron to the quantum regime. The capabilities of these quantum models need to be determined precisely in order to establish if a quantum advantage is achievable. Here we use a statistical physics approach to compute the pattern capacity of a particular model of quantum perceptron realized by means of a continuous variable quantum system.

Error Probability Mitigation in Quantum Reading using Classical Codes

A general framework describing the statistical discrimination of an ensemble of quantum channels is given by the name of quantum reading. Several tools can be applied in quantum reading to reduce the error probability in distinguishing the ensemble of channels. Classical and quantum codes can be envisioned for this goal. The aim of this paper is to present a simple but fruitful protocol for this task using classical error-correcting codes. Three families of codes are considered: Reed-Solomon codes, BCH codes, and Reed-Muller codes. In conjunction to the use of codes, we also analyze the role of the receiver. In particular, heterodyne and Dolinar receivers are taken in consideration. The encoding and measurement schemes are connected by the probing step. As probe we consider coherent states. In such simple manner, interesting results are obtained. As we show, for any fixed rate and code, there is a threshold under which using codes surpass optimal and sophisticated schemes. However, there are codes and receiver schemes giving lower thresholds. BCH codes in conjunction with Dolinar receiver turn out to be the optimal strategy for error mitigation in the quantum reading task.

An Algebraic-Geometric Characterization of Tripartite Entanglement

To characterize entanglement of tripartite $\mathbb{C}^d\otimes\mathbb{C}^d\otimes\mathbb{C}^d$ systems, we employ algebraic-geometric tools that are invariants under Stochastic Local Operation and Classical Communication (SLOCC), namely $k$-secant varieties and one-multilinear ranks. Indeed, by means of them, we present a classification of tripartite pure states in terms of a finite number of families and subfamilies. At the core of it stands out a fine-structure grouping of three-qutrit entanglement.

Transition between random and periodic electron currents on a DNA chain

By resorting to a model inspired to the standard Davydov and Holstein-Fröhlich models, in the present paper we study the motion of an electron along a chain of heavy particles modelling a sequence of nucleotides proper to a DNA fragment. Starting with a model Hamiltonian written in second quantization, we use the Time Dependent Variational Principle to work out the dynamical equations of the system. It is found that under the action of an external source of energy transferred to the electron, and according to the excitation site, the electron current can display either a broad frequency spectrum or a sharply peaked frequency spectrum. This sequence-dependent charge transfer phenomenology is suggestive of a potentially rich variety of electrodynamic interactions of DNA molecules under the action of electron excitation. This could imply the activation of interactions between DNA and transcription factors, or between DNA and external electromagnetic fields.

Quantum capacity of bosonic dephasing channel

We study the quantum capacity of continuous variable dephasing channel, which is a notable example of non-Gaussian quantum channel. We prove that a single letter formula applies. We then consider input energy restriction and show that by increasing it, the capacity saturates to a finite value. The optimal input state is found to be diagonal in the Fock basis and with a distribution that is a discrete version of a Gaussian. Relations between its mean/variance and dephasing rate/input energy are put forward. We also show that quantum capacity decays exponentially for large values of dephasing rates.
