Statistical theory of high-gain free-electron laser saturation

We propose a new approach, based on statistical mechanics, to predict the saturated state of a single-pass, high-gain free-electron laser (FEL). In analogy with the violent relaxation process in self-gravitating systems and in the Euler equation of 2D turbulence, the initial relaxation of the laser can be described by the statistical mechanics of an associated Vlasov equation. The Laser field intensity and the electron bunching parameter reach quasi-stationary values that are well fitted by a Vlasov stationary state if the number of electrons $N$ is sufficiently large. Finite $N$ effects (granularity) finally drive the system to Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical equilibrium, but this occurs on times that are unphysical (i.e. excessively long undulators). All theoretical predictions are successfully tested in finite $N$ numerical experiments. Our results may provide important hints to the optimization of the length of the FEL undulator.

Supersonic Discrete Kink-Solitons and Sinusoidal Patterns with "Magic" wavenumber in Anharmonic Lattices

The sharp pulse method is applied to Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) and Lennard-Jones (LJ) anharmonic lattices. Numerical simulations reveal the presence of high energy strongly localized ``discrete'' kink-solitons (DK), which move with supersonic velocities that are proportional to kink amplitudes. For small amplitudes, the DK's of the FPU lattice reduce to the well-known ``continuous'' kink-soliton solutions of the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation. For high amplitudes, we obtain a consistent description of these DK's in terms of approximate solutions of the lattice equations that are obtained by restricting to a bounded support in space exact solutions with sinusoidal pattern characterized by the ``magic'' wavenumber $k=2π/3$. Relative displacement patterns, velocity versus amplitude, dispersion relation and exponential tails found in numerical simulations are shown to agree very well with analytical predictions, for both FPU and LJ lattices.

First-order microcanonical transitions in finite mean-field models

A microcanonical first order transition, connecting a clustered to a homogeneous phase, is studied from both the thermodynamic and dynamical point of view for a N-body Hamiltonian system with infinite-range couplings. In the microcanonical ensemble specific heat can be negative, but besides that, a microcanonical first order transition displays a temperature discontinuity as the energy is varied continuously (a dual phenomenon to the latent heat in the canonical ensemble). In the transition region, the entropy per particle exhibits, as a function of the order parameter, two relative maxima separated by a minimum. The relaxation of the metastable state is shown to be ruled by an activation process induced by intrinsic finite N fluctuations. In particular, numerical evidences are given that the escape time diverges exponentially with N, with a growth rate given by the entropy barrier.

Clustering and ensembles inequivalence in the phi-4 and phi-6 mean-field Hamiltonian models

We investigate a model of globally coupled conservative oscillators. Two different algebraic potentials are considered that display in the canonical ensemble either a second ($ϕ^{4}$) or both a second and a first order phase transition separated by tricritical points ($ϕ^{6}$). The stability of highly clustered states appearing in the low temperature/energy region is studied both analytically and numerically for the $ϕ^{4}$-model. Moreover, long-lived out-of-equilibrium states appear close to the second order phase transition when starting with "water-bag" initial conditions, in analogy with what has been found for the Hamiltonian Mean Field (HMF) model. The microcanonical simulations of the $ϕ^{6}$-model show strong hysteretic effects and metastability near the first-order phase transition and a narrow region of negative specific heat.

Ensemble Inequivalence in Mean-field Models of Magnetism

Mean-field models, while they can be cast into an {\it extensive} thermodynamic formalism, are inherently {\it non additive}. This is the basic feature which leads to {\it ensemble inequivalence} in these models. In this paper we study the global phase diagram of the infinite range Blume-Emery-Griffiths model both in the {\it canonical} and in the {\it microcanonical} ensembles. The microcanonical solution is obtained both by direct state counting and by the application of large deviation theory. The canonical phase diagram has first order and continuous transition lines separated by a tricritical point. We find that below the tricritical point, when the canonical transition is first order, the phase diagrams of the two ensembles disagree. In this region the microcanonical ensemble exhibits energy ranges with negative specific heat and temperature jumps at transition energies. These two features are discussed in a general context and the appropriate Maxwell constructions are introduced. Some preliminary extensions of these results to weakly decaying nonintegrable interactions are presented.

Out-of-equilibrium states as statistical equilibria of an effective dynamics

We study the formation of coherent structures in a system with long-range interactions where particles moving on a circle interact through a repulsive cosine potential. Non equilibrium structures are shown to correspond to statistical equilibria of an effective dynamics, which is derived using averaging techniques. This simple behavior might be a prototype of others observed in more complicated systems with long-range interactions, like two-dimensional incompressible fluids or self-gravitating systems.

The Hamiltonian Mean Field Model: from Dynamics to Statistical Mechanics and back

The thermodynamics and the dynamics of particle systems with infinite-range coupling display several unusual and new features with respect to systems with short-range interactions. The Hamiltonian Mean Field (HMF) model represents a paradigmatic example of this class of systems. The present study addresses both attractive and repulsive interactions, with a particular emphasis on the description of clustering phenomena from a thermodynamical as well as from a dynamical point of view. The observed clustering transition can be first or second order, in the usual thermodynamical sense. In the former case, ensemble inequivalence naturally arises close to the transition, i.e. canonical and microcanonical ensembles give different results. In particular, in the microcanonical ensemble negative specific heat regimes and temperature jumps are observed. Moreover, having access to dynamics one can study non-equilibrium processes. Among them, the most striking is the emergence of coherent structures in the repulsive model, whose formation and dynamics can be studied either by using the tools of statistical mechanics or as a manifestation of the solutions of an associated Vlasov equation. The chaotic character of the HMF model has been also analyzed in terms of its Lyapunov spectrum.

Dynamics and Thermodynamics of Systems with Long Range Interactions: an Introduction

We review theoretical results obtained recently in the framework of statistical mechanics to study systems with long range forces. This fundamental and methodological study leads us to consider the different domains of applications in a trans-disciplinary perspective (astrophysics, nuclear physics, plasmas physics, metallic clusters, hydrodynamics,...) with a special emphasis on Bose-Einstein condensates.

First and second order clustering transitions for a system with infinite-range attractive interaction

We consider a Hamiltonian system made of $N$ classical particles moving in two dimensions, coupled via an {\it infinite-range interaction} gauged by a parameter $A$. This system shows a low energy phase with most of the particles trapped in a unique cluster. At higher energy it exhibits a transition towards a homogenous phase. For sufficiently strong coupling $A$ an intermediate phase characterized by two clusters appears. Depending on the value of $A$ the observed transitions can be either second or first order in the canonical ensemble. In the latter case microcanonical results differ dramatically from canonical ones. However, a canonical analysis, extended to metastable and unstable states, is able to describe the microcanonical equilibrium phase. In particular, a microcanonical negative specific heat regime is observed in the proximity of the transition whenever it is canonically discontinuous. In this regime, {\it microcanonically stable} states are shown to correspond to {\it saddles} of the Helmholtz free energy, located inside the spinodal region.

Excitation of travelling multibreathers in anharmonic chains

We study the dynamics of the "externally" forced and damped Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) 1D lattice. The forcing has the spatial symmetry of the Fourier mode with wavenumber p and oscillates sinusoidally in time with the frequency omega. When omega is in the phonon band, the p-mode becomes modulationally unstable above a critical forcing, which we determine analytically in terms of the parameters of the system. For omega above the phonon band, the instability of the p-mode leads to the formation of a travelling multibreather, that, in the low-amplitude limit could be described in terms of soliton solutions of a suitable driven-damped nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation. Similar mechanisms of instability could show up in easy-axis magnetic structures, that are governed by such NLS equations.

Birth and long-time stabilization of out-of-equilibrium coherent structures

We study an analytically tractable model with long-range interactions for which an out-of-equilibrium very long-lived coherent structure spontaneously appears. The dynamics of this model is indeed very peculiar: a bicluster forms at low energy and is stable for very long time, contrary to statistical mechanics predictions. We first explain the onset of the structure, by approximating the short time dynamics with a forced Burgers equation. The emergence of the bicluster is the signature of the shock waves present in the associated hydrodynamical equations. The striking quantitative agreement with the dynamics of the particles fully confirms this procedure. We then show that a very fast timescale can be singled out from a slower motion. This enables us to use an adiabatic approximation to derive an effective Hamiltonian that describes very well the long time dynamics. We then get an explanation of the very long time stability of the bicluster: this out-of-equilibrium state corresponds to a statistical equilibrium of an effective mean-field dynamics.

Pattern formation and localization in the forced-damped FPU lattice

We study spatial pattern formation and energy localization in the dynamics of an anharmonic chain with quadratic and quartic intersite potential subject to an optical, sinusoidally oscillating field and a weak damping. The zone-boundary mode is stable and locked to the driving field below a critical forcing that we determine analytically using an approximate model which describes mode interactions. Above such a forcing, a standing modulated wave forms for driving frequencies below the band-edge, while a ``multibreather'' state develops at higher frequencies. Of the former, we give an explicit approximate analytical expression which compares well with numerical data. At higher forcing space-time chaotic patterns are observed.

Transport Properties of the Diluted Lorentz Slab

We study the behavior of a point particle incident from the left on a slab of a randomly diluted triangular array of circular scatterers. Various scattering properties, such as the reflection and transmission probabilities and the scattering time are studied as a function of thickness and dilution. We show that a diffusion model satisfactorily describes the mentioned scattering properties. We also show how some of these quantities can be evaluated exactly and their agreement with numerical experiments. Our results exhibit the dependence of these scattering data on the mean free path. This dependence again shows excellent agreement with the predictions of a Brownian motion model.

A one-dimensional toy model of globular clusters

We introduce a one-dimensional toy model of globular clusters. The model is a version of the well-known gravitational sheets system, where we take additionally into account mass and energy loss by evaporation of stars at the boundaries. Numerical integration by the "exact" event-driven dynamics is performed, for initial uniform density and Gaussian random velocities. Two distinct quasi-stationary asymptotic regimes are attained, depending on the initial energy of the system. We guess the forms of the density and velocity profiles which fit numerical data extremely well and allow to perform an independent calculation of the self-consistent gravitational potential. Some power-laws for the asymptotic number of stars and for the collision times are suggested.

Inequivalence of ensembles in a system with long range interactions

We study the global phase diagram of the infinite range Blume-Emery-Griffiths model both in the canonical and in the microcanonical ensembles. The canonical phase diagram is known to exhibit first order and continuous transition lines separated by a tricritical point. We find that below the tricritical point, when the canonical transition is first order, the phase diagrams of the two ensembles disagree. In this region the microcanonical ensemble exhibits energy ranges with negative specific heat and temperature jumps at transition energies. These results can be extended to weakly decaying nonintegrable interactions.

Clustering in a model with repulsive long-range interactions

A striking clustering phenomenon in the antiferromagnetic Hamiltonian Mean-Field model has been previously reported. The numerically observed bicluster formation and stabilization is here fully explained by a non linear analysis of the Vlasov equation.

On the microcanonical solution of a system of globally coupled rotators

We study the Hamiltonian Mean Field (HMF) model, a system of $N$ fully coupled particles, in the microcanonical ensemble. We use the previously obtained free energy in the canonical ensemble to derive entropy as a function of energy, using Legendre transform techniques. The temperature-energy relation is found to coincide with the one obtained in the canonical ensemble and includes a {\it metastable} branch which represents spatially homogeneous states below the critical energy. "Water bag" states, with removed tails momentum distribution, lying on this branch, are shown to relax to equilibrium on a time which diverges linearly with $N$ in an energy region just below the phase transition.

Violation of ensemble equivalence in the antiferromagnetic mean-field XY model

It is well known that long-range interactions pose serious problems for the formulation of statistical mechanics. We show in this paper that ensemble equivalence is violated in a simple mean-field model of N fully coupled classical rotators with repulsive interaction (antiferromagnetic XY model). While in the canonical ensemble the rotators are randomly dispersed over all angles, in the microcanonical ensemble a bi-cluster of rotators separated by angle $π$, forms in the low energy limit. We attribute this behavior to the extreme degeneracy of the ground state: only one harmonic mode is present, together with N-1 zero modes. We obtain empirically an analytical formula for the probability density function for the angle made by the rotator, which compares extremely well with numerical data and should become exact in the zero energy limit. At low energy, in the presence of the bi-cluster, an extensive amount of energy is located in the single harmonic mode, with the result that the energy temperature relation is modified. Although still linear, $T = αU$, it has the slope $α\approx 1.3$, instead of the canonical value $α=2$.
