Dynamics and statistics of simple models with infinite-range attractive interaction

In this paper we review a series of results obtained for 1D and 2D simple N-body dynamical models with infinite-range attractive interactions and without short distance singularities. The free energy of both models can be exactly obtained in the canonical ensemble, while microcanonical results can be derived from numerical simulations. Both models show a phase transition from a low energy clustered phase to a high energy gaseous state, in analogy with the models introduced in the early 70's by Thirring and Hertel. The phase transition is second order for the 1D model, first order for the 2D model. Negative specific heat appears in both models near the phase transition point. For both models, in the presence of a negative specific heat, a cluster of collapsed particles coexists with a halo of higher energy particles which perform long correlated flights, which lead to anomalous diffusion. The dynamical origin of the "superdiffusion" is different in the two models, being related to particle trapping and untrapping in the cluster in 1D, while in 2D the channelling of particles in an egg-crate effective potential is responsible of the effect. Both models are Lyapunov unstable and the maximal Lyapunov exponent $λ$ has a peak just in the region preceeding the phase transition. Moreover, in the low energy limit $λ$ increases proportionally to the square root of the internal energy, while in the high energy region it vanishes as $N^{-1/3}$.

Modular Transformations, Order-Chaos Transitions and Pseudo-Random Number Generation

Successive pairs of pseudo-random numbers generated by standard linear congruential transformations display ordered patterns of parallel lines. We study the ``ordered'' and ``chaotic'' distribution of such pairs by solving the eigenvalue problem for two-dimensional modular transformations over integers. We conjecture that the optimal uniformity for pair distribution is obtained when the slope of linear modular eigenspaces takes the value $n_{opt} = maxint(p /\sqrt{p-1})$, where $p$ is a prime number. We then propose a new generator of pairs of independent pseudo-random numbers, which realizes an optimal uniform distribution (in the ``statistical'' sense) of points on the unit square $(0,1] \times (0,1]$. The method can be easily generalized to the generation of $k$-tuples of random numbers (with $k>2$)

Hamiltonian Dynamics and the Phase Transition of the XY Model

A Hamiltonian dynamics is defined for the XY model by adding a kinetic energy term. Thermodynamical properties (total energy, magnetization, vorticity) derived from microcanonical simulations of this model are found to be in agreement with canonical Monte-Carlo results in the explored temperature region. The behavior of the magnetization and the energy as functions of the temperature are thoroughly investigated, taking into account finite size effects. By representing the spin field as a superposition of random phased waves, we derive a nonlinear dispersion relation whose solutions allow the computation of thermodynamical quantities, which agree quantitatively with those obtained in numerical experiments, up to temperatures close to the transition. At low temperatures the propagation of phonons is the dominant phenomenon, while above the phase transition the system splits into ordered domains separated by interfaces populated by topological defects. In the high temperature phase, spins rotate, and an analogy with an Ising-like system can be established, leading to a theoretical prediction of the critical temperature $T_{KT}\approx 0.855$.

Chaos and Statistical Mechanics in the Hamiltonian Mean Field Model

We study the dynamical and statistical behavior of the Hamiltonian Mean Field (HMF) model in order to investigate the relation between microscopic chaos and phase transitions. HMF is a simple toy model of $N$ fully-coupled rotators which shows a second order phase transition. The canonical thermodynamical solution is briefly recalled and its predictions are tested numerically at finite $N$. The Vlasov stationary solution is shown to give the same consistency equation of the canonical solution and its predictions for rotator angle and momenta distribution functions agree very well with numerical simulations. A link is established between the behavior of the maximal Lyapunov exponent and that of thermodynamical fluctuations, expressed by kinetic energy fluctuations or specific heat. The extensivity of chaos in the $N \to \infty$ limit is tested through the scaling properties of Lyapunov spectra and of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy. Chaotic dynamics provides the mixing property in phase space necessary for obtaining equilibration; however, the relaxation time to equilibrium grows with $N$, at least near the critical point. Our results constitute an interesting bridge between Hamiltonian chaos in many degrees of freedom systems and equilibrium thermodynamics.

Transmission and Scattering of a Lorentz Gas on a Slab

We perform numerical scattering experiments on a Lorentz array of disks centered on a triangular lattice with L columns and study its transmission and reflection properties. In the finite horizon case, the motion of the particles may be modeled as simple one dimensional random walks with absorbing walls for which the scaling of the transmission and reflection coefficients are known, and agree with those found numerically. In the infinite horizon case the analogy with a simple diffusive process is no longer valid. In this case we compare our results with those expected for a one dimensional Levy walk, again with absorbing walls, for which logarithmic corrections to the scaling relations appear. The scaling with L and the symmetry properties of the forward and the backward are also studied, and some of their salient features are discussed.

Analytical Estimation of the Maximal lyapunov Exponent in Oscillator Chains

An analytical expression for the maximal Lyapunov exponent $λ_1$ in generalized Fermi-Pasta-Ulam oscillator chains is obtained. The derivation is based on the calculation of modulational instability growth rates for some unstable periodic orbits. The result is compared with numerical simulations and the agreement is good over a wide range of energy densities $ε$. At very high energy density the power law scaling of $λ_1$ with $ε$ can be also obtained by simple dimensional arguments, assuming that the system is ruled by a single time scale. Finally, we argue that for repulsive and hard core potentials in one dimension $λ_1 \sim \sqrtε$ at large $ε$.

Localization and Equipartition of Energy in the beta-FPU Chain : Chaotic Breathers

The evolution towards equipartition in the $β$-FPU chain is studied considering as initial condition the highest frequency mode. Above an analytically derived energy threshold, this zone-boundary mode is shown to be modulationally unstable and to give rise to a striking localization process. The spontaneously created excitations have strong similarity with moving exact breathers solutions. But they have a finite lifetime and their dynamics is chaotic. These chaotic breathers are able to collect very efficiently the energy in the chain. Therefore their size grows in time and they can transport a very large quantity of energy. These features can be explained analyzing the dynamics of perturbed exact breathers of the FPU chain. In particular, a close connection between the Lyapunov spectrum of the chaotic breathers and the Floquet spectrum of the exact ones has been found. The emergence of chaotic breathers is convincingly explained by the absorption of high frequency phonons whereas a breather's metastability is for the first time identified. The lifetime of the chaotic breather is related to the time necessary for the system to reach equipartition. The equipartition time turns out to be dependent on the system energy density $ε$ only. Moreover, such time diverges as $ε^{-2}$ in the limit $ε\to 0$ and vanishes as $ε^{-1/4}$ for $ε\to \infty$.

Lyapunov instability and finite size effects in a system with long-range forces

We study the largest Lyapunov exponent $λ$ and the finite size effects of a system of N fully-coupled classical particles, which shows a second order phase transition. Slightly below the critical energy density $U_c$, $λ$ shows a peak which persists for very large N-values (N=20000). We show, both numerically and analytically, that chaoticity is strongly related to kinetic energy fluctuations. In the limit of small energy, $λ$ goes to zero with a N-independent power law: $λ\sim \sqrt{U}$. In the continuum limit the system is integrable in the whole high temperature phase. More precisely, the behavior $λ\sim N^{-1/3}$ is found numerically for $U > U_c$ and justified on the basis of a random matrix approximation.

Modulational Estimate for Fermi-Pasta-Ulam Chain Lyapunov Exponents

In the framework of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) model, we show a simple method to give an accurate analytical estimation of the maximal Lyapunov exponent at high energy density. The method is based on the computation of the mean value of the modulational instability growth rates associated to unstable modes. Moreover, we show that the strong stochasticity threshold found in the $β$-FPU system is closely related to a transition in tangent space: the Lyapunov eigenvector being more localized in space at high energy.

Transition between immune and disease states in a cellular automaton model of clonal immune response

In this paper we extend the Celada-Seiden (CS) model of the humoral immune response to include infectious virus and cytotoxic T lymphocytes (cellular response). The response of the system to virus involves a competition between the ability of the virus to kill the host cells and the host's ability to eliminate the virus. We find two basins of attraction in the dynamics of this system, one is identified with disease and the other with the immune state. There is also an oscillating state that exists on the border of these two stable states. Fluctuations in the population of virus or antibody can end the oscillation and drive the system into one of the stable states. The introduction of mechanisms of cross-regulation between the two responses can bias the system towards one of them. We also study a mean field model, based on coupled maps, to investigate virus-like infections. This simple model reproduces the attractors for average populations observed in the cellular automaton. All the dynamical behavior connected to spatial extension is lost, as is the oscillating feature. Thus the mean field approximation introduced with coupled maps destroys oscillations.
