Invariant measures for the one-dimensional stochastic Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations

We investigate the long-time behaviour of a one-dimensional compressible viscous fluid with general capillarity and density dependent viscosity, driven by a stochastic additive noise. In particular, we prove the existence of invariant measures by applying the Krylov-Bogoliubov method in a setting where the dynamics is supported on a non-complete phase space. This analysis is further enhanced by the derivation of a refined stability result determining the continuous dependence with respect to the initial data. The present paper exhibits some properties and results for Korteweg fluids which are not known in absence of the capillarity tensor. In particular, we prove that the Markov semigroup associated with strong solutions is Feller and we can consider ranges of the adiabatic and viscosity exponents $\gamma$ and $\alpha$ larger than those available in the current ergodic literature for compressible fluids. Also the interplay between the choice of the physical domain and the use of a damping term is discussed.

Global Existence and Uniqueness of Strong Solutions for a Phase Transition Model in Atmospheric Dynamics

In this work, we study a phase transition model in atmospheric dynamics, inspired by the works [6,14,15], which analyze the primitive equations governing the evolution of velocity, temperature, and specific humidity. The main difficulty arises from the presence of a multivalued discontinuous nonlinear term in the temperature and in the humidity equations, describing the formation of precipitations, which becomes active under supersaturation conditions. To overcome this issue, we introduce a regularized formulation that ensures the existence and uniqueness of approximate solutions. By employing classical compactness arguments, we then establish the existence of a strong solution to the original model. Additionally, we establish uniqueness under a conditional and physically meaningful assumption. This approach allows us to provide a rigorous justification of the tropical climate model on the whole space $\mathbb{R}^2$, while avoiding the introduction of a viscosity term in the humidity equation.

On the existence of non-negative weak solutions for $1D$ fourth order equations of gradient flow type

In this paper, we consider a family of one-dimensional fourth order evolution equations arising as gradient flows of the Korteweg energy, i.e. the $L^2$-norm of the first derivative of some power of the density. This family of equations generalizes the Quantum-Drift-Diffusion equation and the Thin-Film equation. We prove the global-in-time existence of {\em non-negative} weak solutions without requiring any upper bound on the exponent of the power of the density in the energy.

A priori error estimates for the $\theta$-method for the flow of nonsmooth velocity fields

Velocity fields with low regularity (below the Lipschitz threshold) naturally arise in many models from mathematical physics, such as the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and play a fundamental role in the analysis of nonlinear PDEs. The DiPerna-Lions theory ensures existence and uniqueness of the flow associated with a divergence-free velocity field with Sobolev regularity. In this paper, we establish a priori error estimates showing a logarithmic rate of convergence of numerical solutions, constructed via the $\theta$-method, towards the exact (analytic) flow for a velocity field with Sobolev regularity. In addition, we derive analogous a priori error estimates for Lagrangian solutions of the associated transport equation, exhibiting the same logarithmic rate of convergence. Our theoretical results are supported by numerical experiments, which confirm the predicted logarithmic behavior.

Convergence of the Euler-Voigt equations to the Euler equations in two dimensions

In this paper, we consider the two-dimensional torus and we study the convergence of solutions of the Euler-Voigt equations to solutions of the Euler equations, under several regularity settings. More precisely, we first prove that for weak solutions of the Euler equations with vorticity in $C([0,T];L^2(\mathbb{T}^2))$ the approximating velocity converges strongly in $C([0,T];H^1(\mathbb{T}^2))$. Moreover, for the unique Yudovich solution of the $2D$ Euler equations we provide a rate of convergence for the velocity in $C([0,T];L^2(\mathbb{T}^2))$. Finally, for classical solutions in higher-order Sobolev spaces we prove the convergence with explicit rates of both the approximating velocity and the approximating vorticity in $C([0,T];L^2(\mathbb{T}^2))$.

Global weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg Equations in one dimension

We prove the global existence of weak solutions of the one-dimensional Navier-Stokes-Korteweg (NSK) equations when the viscosity and the capillarity coefficients are power functions of the density, which may be zero on a set with positive measure. The proofs are based on a truncation argument combined with the Energy estimate and BD Entropy. Notably, we do not require any upper bound on the exponent of the power of the viscosity coefficient. In particular, we are able to consider very degenerate viscosity coefficient and to substantially improve previous results.

Weak martingale solutions to the stochastic 1D Quantum-Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper we prove the existence of global weak dissipative martingale solutions for a one-dimensional compressible fluid model with capillarity and density dependent viscosity, driven by random initial data and a stochastic forcing term. These solutions are weak in both PDEs and Probability sense and may have vacuum regions. The proof relies on the construction of an approximating system which provides extra dissipation properties and the convergence is based on an appropriate truncation of the velocity field in the momentum equation and a stochastic compactness argument

Asymptotic Limits for Strain-Gradient Viscoelasticity with Nonconvex Energy

We consider the system of viscoelasticity with higher-order gradients and nonconvex energy in several space dimensions. We establish the asymptotic limits when the viscosity $\nu\rightarrow 0$ or when the dispersion coefficient $\delta \rightarrow 0$. For the latter problem, it is worth noting that, for the case of two space dimensions, we also establish a rate of convergence. This result bears analogies to a result of Chemin \cite{jean1996remark} on the rate of convergence of the zero-viscosity limit for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with bounded vorticity.

Propagation of logarithmic regularity and inviscid limit for the 2D Euler equations

The aim of this note is to study the Cauchy problem for the 2D Euler equations under very low regularity assumptions on the initial datum. We prove propagation of regularity of logarithmic order in the class of weak solutions with $L^p$ initial vorticity, provided that $p\geq 4$. We also study the inviscid limit from the 2D Navier-Stokes equations for vorticity with logarithmic regularity in the Yudovich class, showing a rate of convergence of order $|\log\nu|^{-\alpha/2}$ with $\alpha>0$.

Global regularity for the one-dimensional stochastic Quantum-Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper we prove the global in time well-posedness of strong solutions to the Quantum-Navier-Stokes equation driven by random initial data and stochastic external force. In particular, we first give a general local well-posedness result. Then, by means of the Bresch-Desjardins entropy, higher order energy estimates, and a continuation argument we prove that the density never vanishes, and thus that local strong solutions are indeed global.

Strong convergence of the vorticity and conservation of the energy for the $α$-Euler equations

In this paper, we study the convergence of solutions of the $α$-Euler equations to solutions of the Euler equations on the $2$-dimensional torus. In particular, given an initial vorticity $ω_0$ in $L^p_x$ for $p \in (1,\infty)$, we prove strong convergence in $L^\infty_tL^p_x$ of the vorticities $q^α$, solutions of the $α$-Euler equations, towards a Lagrangian and energy-conserving solution of the Euler equations. Furthermore, if we consider solutions with bounded initial vorticity, we prove a quantitative rate of convergence of $q^α$ to $ω$ in $L^p$, for $p \in (1, \infty)$.

On the convergence of second-order in time numerical discretizations for the evolution Navier-Stokes equations

We prove the convergence of certain second-order numerical methods to weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations satisfying in addition the local energy inequality, and therefore suitable in the sense of Scheffer and Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg. More precisely, we treat the space-periodic case in three space-dimensions and we consider a full discretization in which the the classical Crank-Nicolson method ($θ$-method with $θ=1/2$) is used to discretize the time variable, while in the space variables we consider finite elements. The convective term is discretized in several implicit, semi-implicit, and explicit ways. In particular, we focus on proving (possibly conditional) convergence of the discrete solutions towards weak solutions (satisfying a precise local energy balance), without extra regularity assumptions on the limit problem. We do not prove orders of convergence, but our analysis identifies some numerical schemes providing also alternate proofs of existence of "physically relevant" solutions in three space dimensions.

On the compactness of weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations for capillary fluids

In this paper we consider the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations for a viscous compressible fluid with capillarity effects in three space dimensions. We prove compactness of finite energy weak solutions for large initial data. In contrast with previous results regarding this system, vacuum regions are allowed in the definition of weak solutions and no additional damping terms are considered. The compactness is obtained by introducing suitable truncations of the velocity field and the mass density at different scales and use only the a priori bounds obtained by the energy and the BD entropy.

Global Existence of Finite Energy Weak Solutions of Quantum Navier-Stokes Equations

In this paper we consider the Quantum Navier-Stokes system both in two and in three space dimensions and prove global existence of finite energy weak solutions for large initial data. In particular, the notion of weak solutions is the standard one. This means that the vacuum region are included in the weak formulations. In particular, no extra term like damping or cold pressure are added to the system in order to define the velocity field in the vacuum region. The main contribution of this paper is the construction of a regular approximating system consistent with the effective velocity transformation needed to get necessary a priori estimates.

Strong convergence of the vorticity for the 2D Euler Equations in the inviscid limit

In this paper we prove the uniform-in-time $L^p$ convergence in the inviscid limit of a family $ω^ν$ of solutions of the $2D$ Navier-Stokes equations towards a renormalized/Lagrangian solution $ω$ of the Euler equations. We also prove that, in the class of solutions with bounded vorticity, it is possible to obtain a rate for the convergence of $ω^ν$ to $ω$ in $L^p$. Finally, we show that solutions of the Euler equations with $L^p$ vorticity, obtained in the vanishing viscosity limit, conserve the kinetic energy. The proofs are given by using both a (stochastic) Lagrangian approach and an Eulerian approach.

Existence and uniqueness for a viscoelastic Kelvin-Voigt model with nonconvex stored energy

We consider nonlinear viscoelastic materials of Kelvin-Voigt type with stored energies satisfying an Andrews-Ball condition, allowing for non convexity in a compact set. Existence of weak solutions with deformation gradients in $H^1$ is established for energies of any superquadratic growth. In two space dimensions, weak solutions notably turn out to be unique in this class. Conservation of energy for weak solutions in two and three dimensions, as well as global regularity for smooth initial data in two dimensions are established under additional mild restrictions on the growth of the stored energy.

Relaxation limit from the Quantum-Navier-Stokes equations to the Quantum Drift Diffusion equation

The relaxation-time limit from the Quantum-Navier-Stokes-Poisson system to the quantum drift-diffusion equation is performed in the framework of finite energy weak solutions. No assumptions on the limiting solution are made. The proof exploits the suitably scaled a priori bounds inferred by the energy and BD entropy estimates. Moreover, it is shown how from those estimates the Fisher entropy and free energy estimates associated to the diffusive evolution are recovered in the limit. As a byproduct, our main result also provides an alternative proof for the existence of finite energy weak solutions to the quantum drift-diffusion equation.
