Quasiconvex elastodynamics: weak-strong uniqueness for measure-valued solutions

A weak-strong uniqueness result is proved for measure-valued solutions to the system of conservation laws arising in elastodynamics. The main novelty brought forward by the present work is that the underlying stored-energy function of the material is assumed strongly quasiconvex. The proof employs tools from the calculus of variations to establish general convexity-type bounds on quasiconvex functions and recasts them in order to adapt the relative entropy method to quasiconvex elastodynamics.

Global existence of finite energy weak solutions to the Quantum Navier-Stokes equations with non-trivial far-field behavior

We prove global existence of finite energy weak solutions to the quantum Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space with non trivial far-field condition in dimensions d = 2,3. The vacuum regions are included in the weak formulation of the equations. Our method consists in an invading domains approach. More precisely, by using a suitable truncation argument we construct a sequence of approximate solutions. The energy and the BD entropy bounds allow for the passage to the limit in the truncated formulation leading to a finite energy weak solution. Moreover, the result is also valid in the case of compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosity.

Splash singularity for a free-boundary incompressible viscoelastic fluid model

In this paper we analyze a 2D free-boundary viscoelastic fluid model of Oldroyd-B type at infinite Weissenberg number. Our main goal is to show the existence of the so-called splash singularities, namely points where the boundary remains smooth but self-intersects. The combination of existence and stability results allows us to construct a special class of initial data, which evolve in time into self-intersecting configurations. To this purpose we apply the classical conformal mapping method and later we move to the Lagrangian framework, as a consequence we deduce the existence of splash singularities. This result extends the result obtained for the Navier-Stokes equations in "Splash singularities for the free-boundary Navier-Stokes" by Castro, A. et al. (2015).

Smooth approximation is not a selection principle for the transport equation with rough vector field

In this paper we analyse the selection problem for weak solutions of the transport equation with rough vector field. We answer in the negative the question whether solutions of the equation with a regularized vector field converge to a unique limit, which would be the selected solution of the limit problem. To this aim, we give a new example of a vector field which admits infinitely many flows. Then we construct a smooth approximating sequence of the vector field for which the corresponding solutions have subsequences converging to different solutions of the limit equation.

Splash singularities for a general Oldroyd model with finite Weissenberg number

In this paper we study a 2D Oldroyd free-boundary model which describes the evolution of a viscoelastic fluid. We prove existence of splash singularities, namely points where the boundary remains smooth but self-intersects. This paper extends the previous results obtained for infinite Weissenberg number to the case of any finite Weissenberg number. The main difficulty of this paper is due to the non linear balance law of the elastic tensor which cannot be reduced, as in the case of infinite Weissenberg, to the transport equations for the deformation gradient. Our strategy in accurate local existence result depending on the Weissenberg number and the combination of Conformal and Lagrangian transformations. The existence of splash singularities is guarantee by a suitable choice of the initial data combined with stability estimates.

Weak solutions obtained by the vortex method for the 2D Euler equations are Lagrangian and conserve the energy

We discuss the Lagrangian property and the conservation of the kinetic energy for solutions of the 2D incompressible Euler equations. Existence of Lagrangian solutions is known when the initial vorticity is in $L^p$ with $1\leq p\leq \infty$. Moreover, if $p\geq 3/2$ all weak solutions are conservative. In this work we prove that solutions obtained via the vortex method are Lagrangian, and that they are conservative if $p>1$.

Global existence of weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations

In this paper we consider the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations for a viscous compressible fluid with capillarity effects in three space dimensions. We prove global existence of finite energy weak solutions for large initial data. Contrary to previous results regarding this system, vacuum regions are allowed in the definition of weak solutions and no additional damping terms are considered. The convergence of the approximating solutions is obtained by introducing suitable truncations in the momentum equations of the velocity field and the mass density at different scales and use only the a priori bounds obtained by the energy and the BD entropy. Moreover, the approximating solutions enjoy only a limited amount of regularity, and the derivation of the truncations of the velocity and the density is performed by a suitable regularization procedure.

On smooth approximations of rough vector fields and the selection of flows

In this work we deal with the selection problem of flows of an irregular vector field. We first summarize an example from \cite{CCS} of a vector field $b$ and a smooth approximation $b_ε$ for which the sequence $X^ε$ of flows of $b_ε$ has subsequences converging to different flows of the limit vector field $b$. Furthermore, we give some heuristic ideas on the selection of a subclass of flows in our specific case.

Strong continuity for the 2D Euler equations

We prove two results of strong continuity with respect to the initial datum for bounded solutions to the Euler equations in vorticity form. The first result provides sequential continuity and holds for a general bounded solution. The second result provides uniform continuity and is restricted to Hölder continuous solutions.

Logarithmic estimates for continuity equations

The aim of this short note is twofold. First, we give a sketch of the proof of a recent result proved by the authors in the paper [Colombo, Crippa, and Spirito, Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations 2015] concerning existence and uniqueness of renormalized solutions of continuity equations with unbounded damping coefficient. Second, we show how the ideas in [Colombo, Crippa, and Spirito, Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations 2015] can be used to provide an alternative proof of the result in [Clop, Jiang, Mateu, and Orobitg, Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations 2016], [Desjardins, Comm. Partial Diff. Eq. 1996], and [Mucha, J. Differential Equations 2010] where the usual requirement of boundedness of the divergence of the vector field has been relaxed to various settings of exponentially integrable functions.

Suitable weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations constructed by a space-time numerical discretization

We prove that weak solutions obtained as limits of certain numerical space-time discretizations are suitable in the sense of Scheffer and Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg. More precisely, in the space-periodic setting, we consider a full discretization in which the theta-method is used to discretize the time variable, while in the space variables we consider appropriate families of finite elements. The main result is the validity of the so-called local energy inequality.

On the convergence of a fully discrete scheme of LES type to physically relevant solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes

Obtaining reliable numerical simulations of turbulent fluids is a challenging problem in computational fluid mechanics. The Large Eddy Simulations (LES) models are efficient tools to approximate turbulent fluids and an important step in the validation of these models is the ability to reproduce relevant properties of the flow. In this paper we consider a fully discrete approximation of the Navier-Stokes-Voigt model by an implicit Euler algorithm (with respect to the time variable) and a Fourier-Galerkin method (in the space variables). We prove the convergence to weak solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations satisfying the natural local entropy condition, hence selecting the so-called physically relevant solutions

Eulerian and Lagrangian solutions to the continuity and Euler equations with $L^1$ vorticity

In the first part of this paper we establish a uniqueness result for continuity equations with velocity field whose derivative can be represented by a singular integral operator of an $L^1$ function, extending the Lagrangian theory in \cite{BouchutCrippa13}. The proof is based on a combination of a stability estimate via optimal transport techniques developed in \cite{Seis16a} and some tools from harmonic analysis introduced in \cite{BouchutCrippa13}. In the second part of the paper, we address a question that arose in \cite{FilhoMazzucatoNussenzveig06}, namely whether 2D Euler solutions obtained via vanishing viscosity are renormalized (in the sense of DiPerna and Lions) when the initial data has low integrability. We show that this is the case even when the initial vorticity is only in~$L^1$, extending the proof for the $L^p$ case in \cite{CrippaSpirito15}.

Suitable weak solutions to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations are constructed with the Voigt Approximation

In this paper we consider the Navier-Stokes equations supplemented with either the Dirichlet or vorticity-based Navier boundary conditions. We prove that weak solutions obtained as limits of solutions to the Navier-Stokes-Voigt model satisfy the local energy inequality. Moreover, in the periodic setting we prove that if the parameters are chosen in an appropriate way, then we can construct suitable weak solutions trough a Fourier-Galerkin finite-dimensional approximation in the space variables.

On the compactness of finite energy weak solutions to the quantum Navier-Stokes equations

We consider the Quantum Navier-Stokes system in three space dimensions. We prove compactness of finite energy weak solutions for large initial data. The main novelties are that vacuum regions are included in the weak formulation and no extra terms, like damping or cold pressure, are considered in the equations in order to define the velocity field. Our argument uses an equivalent formulation of the system in terms of an effective velocity, in order to eliminate the third order terms in the new system. It allows us to derive estimates similar to the ones available in the case of the compressible Navier-Stokes with degenerate viscosity.

Failure of the chain rule for the divergence of bounded vector fields

We provide a vast class of counterexamples to the chain rule for the divergence of bounded vector fields in three space dimensions. Our convex integration approach allows us to produce renormalization defects of various kinds, which in a sense quantify the breakdown of the chain rule. For instance, we can construct defects which are absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure, or defects which are not even measures.
