On the additive image of 0th persistent homology

For $X$ a finite category and $F$ a finite field, we study the additive image of the functor $\operatorname{H}_0(-,F) \colon \operatorname{rep}(X, \mathbf{Top}) \to \operatorname{rep}(X, \mathbf{Vect}_F)$, or equivalently, of the free functor $\operatorname{rep}(X, \mathbf{Set}) \to \operatorname{rep}(X, \mathbf{Vect}_F)$. We characterize all finite categories $X$ for which the indecomposables in the additive image coincide with the indecomposable indicator representations and provide examples of quivers of wild representation type where the additive image contains only finitely many indecomposables. Motivated by questions in topological data analysis, we conduct a detailed analysis of the additive image for finite grids. In particular, we show that for grids of infinite representation type, there exist infinitely many indecomposables both within and outside the additive image. We develop an algorithm for determining if a representation of a finite category is in the additive image. In addition, we investigate conditions for realizability and the effect of modifications of the source category and the underlying field. The paper concludes with a discussion of the additive image of $\operatorname{H}_n(-,F)$ for an arbitrary field $F$, extending previous work for prime fields.

Non-piecewise hereditary Nakayama algebras

Happel and Seidel gave a classification of piecewise hereditary Nakayama algebras, where the relations are given by some power of the radical. Here we explore what happens for general relations. We develop techniques for showing that a given algebra is not piecewise hereditary, illustrating them on numerous mid-sized examples. Then we observe cases where the property of being non-piecewise hereditary can be extended to other (larger) Nakayama algebras. While a complete classification remains elusive, we are able to identify two types of patterns of relations preventing piecewise heredity, indicating that for large quivers many Nakayama algebras are non-piecewise hereditary.

On the bottleneck stability of rank decompositions of multi-parameter persistence modules

A significant part of modern topological data analysis is concerned with the design and study of algebraic invariants of poset representations -- often referred to as multi-parameter persistence modules. One such invariant is the minimal rank decomposition, which encodes the ranks of all the structure morphisms of the persistence module by a single ordered pair of rectangle-decomposable modules, interpreted as a signed barcode. This signed barcode generalizes the concept of persistence barcode from one-parameter persistence to any number of parameters, raising the question of its bottleneck stability. We show in this paper that the minimal rank decomposition is not stable under the natural notion of signed bottleneck matching between signed barcodes. We remedy this by turning our focus to the rank exact decomposition, a related signed barcode induced by the minimal projective resolution of the module relative to the so-called rank exact structure, which we prove to be bottleneck stable under signed matchings. As part of our proof, we obtain two intermediate results of independent interest: we compute the global dimension of the rank exact structure on the category of finitely presentable multi-parameter persistence modules, and we prove a bottleneck stability result for hook-decomposable modules. We also give a bound for the size of the rank exact decomposition that is polynomial in the size of the usual minimal projective resolution, we prove a universality result for the dissimilarity function induced by the notion of signed matching, and we compute, in the two-parameter case, the global dimension of a different exact structure related to the upsets of the indexing poset. This set of results combines concepts from topological data analysis and from the representation theory of posets, and we believe is relevant to both areas.

Signed Barcodes for Multi-Parameter Persistence via Rank Decompositions and Rank-Exact Resolutions

In this paper, we introduce the signed barcode, a new visual representation of the global structure of the rank invariant of a multi-parameter persistence module or, more generally, of a poset representation. Like its unsigned counterpart in one-parameter persistence, the signed barcode decomposes the rank invariant as a $\Z$-linear combination of rank invariants of indicator modules supported on segments in the poset. We develop the theory behind these decompositions, both for the usual rank invariant and for its generalizations, showing under what conditions they exist and are unique. We also show that, like its unsigned counterpart, the signed barcode reflects in part the algebraic structure of the module: specifically, it derives from the terms in the minimal rank-exact resolution of the module, i.e., its minimal projective resolution relative to the class of short exact sequences on which the rank invariant is additive. To complete the picture, we show some experimental results that illustrate the contribution of the signed barcode in the exploration of multi-parameter persistence modules.

Partial Serre duality and cocompact objects

A successful theme in the development of triangulated categories has been the study of compact objects. A weak dual notion called 0-cocompact objects was introduced in arXiv:1801.07995, motivated by the fact that sets of such objects cogenerate co-t-structures, dual to the t-structures generated by sets of compact objects. In the present paper, we show that the notion of 0-cocompact objects also appears naturally in the presence of certain dualities. We introduce "partial Serre duality", which is shown to link compact to 0-cocompact objects. We show that partial Serre duality gives rise to an Auslander--Reiten theory, which in turn implies a weaker notion of duality which we call "non-degenerate composition", and throughout this entire hierarchy of dualities the objects involved are 0-(co)compact. Furthermore, we produce explicit partial Serre functors for multiple flavors of homotopy categories, thus illustrating that this type of duality, as well as the resulting 0-cocompact objects, are abundant in prevalent triangulated categories.

Representation theory of Geigle-Lenzing complete intersections

Weighted projective lines, introduced by Geigle and Lenzing in 1987, are important objects in representation theory. They have tilting bundles, whose endomorphism algebras are the canonical algebras introduced by Ringel. The aim of this paper is to study their higher dimensional analogs. First, we introduce a certain class of commutative Gorenstein rings $R$ graded by abelian groups $L$ of rank $1$, which we call Geigle-Lenzing complete intersections. We study the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay representations $CM^LR$, which coincides with the singularity category $D_{sg}^L(R)$. We show that the stable category of $CM^LR$ is triangle equivalent to $D^b(mod A^{CM})$ for a finite dimensional algebra $A^{CM}$, which we call the CM-canonical algebra. As an application, we classify the $(R,L)$ that are Cohen-Macaulay finite. We also give sufficient conditions for $(R,L)$ to be $d$-Cohen-Macaulay finite in the sense of higher Auslander-Reiten theory. Secondly, we study a new class of non-commutative projective schemes in the sense of Artin-Zhang, i.e. the category $coh X=mod^LR/mod^L_0R$ of coherent sheaves on the Geigle-Lenzing projective space $X$. Geometrically this is the quotient stack $[(Spec R-{R_+})/Spec k[L]]$. We show that $D^b(coh X)$ is triangle equivalent to $D^b(mod A^{ca})$ for a finite dimensional algebra $A^{ca}$, which we call a $d$-canonical algebra. We study when $X$ is $d$-vector bundle finite, and when $X$ is derived equivalent to a $d$-representation infinite algebra in the sense of higher Auslander-Reiten theory. Our $d$-canonical algebras provide a rich source of $d$-Fano and $d$-anti-Fano algebras in non-commutative algebraic geometry. We also observe Orlov-type semiorthogonal decompositions of $D_{sg}^L(R)$ and $D^b(coh X)$.

$n$-angulated categories

We define $n$-angulated categories by modifying the axioms of triangulated categories in a natural way. We show that Heller's parametrization of pre-triangulations extends to pre-$n$-angulations. We obtain a large class of examples of $n$-angulated categories by considering $(n-2)$-cluster tilting subcategories of triangulated categories which are stable under the $(n-2)$nd power of the suspension functor. As an application, we show how $n$-angulated Calabi-Yau categories yield triangulated Calabi-Yau categories of higher Calabi-Yau dimension. Finally, we sketch a link to algebraic geometry and string theory.

Cotorsion torsion triples and the representation theory of filtered hierarchical clustering

We give a full classification of representation types of the subcategories of representations of an $m \times n$ rectangular grid with monomorphisms (dually, epimorphisms) in one or both directions, which appear naturally in the context of clustering as two-parameter persistent homology in degree zero. We show that these subcategories are equivalent to the category of all representations of a smaller grid, modulo a finite number of indecomposables. This equivalence is constructed from a certain cotorsion torsion triple, which is obtained from a tilting subcategory generated by said indecomposables.

Change of rings and singularity categories

We investigate the behavior of singularity categories and stable categories of Gorenstein projective modules along a morphism of rings. The natural context to approach the problem is via change of rings, that is, the classical adjoint triple between the module categories. In particular, we identify conditions on the change of rings to induce functors between the two singularity categories or the two stable categories of Gorenstein projective modules. Moreover, we study this problem at the level of `big singularity categories' in the sense of Krause. Along the way we establish an explicit construction of a right adjoint functor between certain homotopy categories. This is achieved by introducing the notion of 0-cocompact objects in triangulated categories and proving a dual version of Bousfield's localization lemma. We provide applications and examples illustrating our main results.

A recollement approach to Geigle-Lenzing weighted projective varieties

We introduce a new method for expanding an abelian category and study it using recollements. In particular, we give a criterion for the existence of cotilting objects. We show, using techniques from noncommutative algebraic geometry, that our construction encompasses the category of coherent sheaves on Geigle-Lenzing weighted projective lines. We apply our construction to some concrete examples and obtain new weighted projective varieties and analyse the endomorphism algebras of their tilting bundles.

Quivers for silting mutation

We give a combinatorial mutation rule for Aihara's and Iyama's silting mutation. As an application, we reprove Keller-Yang's mutation rule for Ginzburg algebras, and obtain an analog of that rule for arbitrary dimension.

The Gorenstein defect category

We consider the homotopy category of complexes of projective modules over a Noetherian ring. Truncation at degree zero induces a fully faithful triangle functor from the totally acyclic complexes to the stable derived category. We show that if the ring is either Artin or commutative Noetherian local, then the functor is dense if and only if the ring is Gorenstein. Motivated by this, we define the Gorenstein defect category of the ring, a category which in some sense measures how far the ring is from being Gorenstein.

Higher preprojective algebras and stably Calabi-Yau properties

In this paper, we give sufficient properties for a finite dimensional graded algebra to be a higher preprojective algebra. These properties are of homological nature, they use Gorensteiness and bimodule isomorphisms in the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay modules. We prove that these properties are also necessary for $3$-preprojective algebras using \cite{Kel11} and for preprojective algebras of higher representation finite algebras using \cite{Dugas}.

Degenerations of submodules and composition series

Let $M$ and $N$ be modules over an artin algebra such that $M$ degenerates to $N$. We show that any submodule of $M$ degenerates to a submodule of $N$. This suggests that a composition series of $M$ will in some sense degenerate to a composition series of $N$. We then study a subvariety of the module variety, consisting of those representations where all matrices are upper triangular. We show that these representations can be seen as representations of composition series, and that the orbit closures describe the above mentioned degeneration of composition series.

Quotient closed subcategories of quiver representations

Let Q be a finite quiver without oriented cycles, and let k be an algebraically closed field. The main result in this paper is that there is a natural bijection between the elements in the associated Coxeter group W_Q and the cofinite additive quotient-closed subcategories of the category of finite dimensional right modules over kQ. We prove this correspondence by linking these subcategories to certain ideals in the preprojective algebra associated to Q, which are also indexed by elements of W_Q.

The negative side of cohomology for Calabi-Yau categories

We study integer-graded cohomology rings defined over Calabi-Yau categories. We show that the cohomology in negative degree is a trivial extension of the cohomology ring in non-negative degree, provided the latter admits a regular sequence of central elements of length two. In particular, the product of elements of negative degrees are zero. As corollaries we apply this to Tate-Hochschild cohomology rings of symmetric algebras, and to Tate cohomology rings over group algebras. We also prove similar results for Tate cohomology rings over commutative local Gorenstein rings.

n-Representation infinite algebras

From the viewpoint of higher dimensional Auslander-Reiten theory, we introduce a new class of finite dimensional algebras of global dimension n, which we call n-representation infinite. They are a certain analog of representation infinite hereditary algebras, and we study three important classes of modules: n-preprojective, n-preinjective and n-regular modules. We observe that their homological behaviour is quite interesting. For instance they provide first examples of algebras having infinite Ext^1-orthogonal families of modules. Moreover we give general constructions of n-representation infinite algebras. Applying Minamoto's theory on Fano algebras in non-commutative algebraic geometry, we describe the category of n-regular modules in terms of the corresponding preprojective algebra. Then we introduce n-representation tame algebras, and show that the category of n-regular modules decomposes into the categories of finite dimensional modules over localizations of the preprojective algebra. This generalizes the classical description of regular modules over tame hereditary algebras. As an application, we show that the representation dimension of an n-representation tame algebra is at least n+2.
