Algebras of acyclic cluster type: tree type and type $\widetilde{A}$

In this paper, we study algebras of global dimension at most 2 whose generalized cluster category is equivalent to the cluster category of an acyclic quiver which is either a tree or of type $\widetilde{A}$. We are particularly interested in their derived equivalence classification. We prove that each algebra which is cluster equivalent to a tree quiver is derived equivalent to the path algebra of this tree. Then we describe explicitly the algebras of cluster type $\A_n$ for each possible orientation of $\A_n$. We give an explicit way to read off in which derived equivalence class such an algebra lies, and describe the Auslander-Reiten quiver of its derived category. Together, these results in particular provide a complete classification of algebras which are cluster equivalent to tame acyclic quivers.

Cluster equivalence and graded derived equivalence

In this paper we introduce a new approach for organizing algebras of global dimension at most 2. We introduce the notion of cluster equivalence for these algebras, based on whether their generalized cluster categories are equivalent. We are particularly interested in the question how much information about an algebra is preserved in its generalized cluster category, or, in other words, how closely two algebras are related if they have equivalent generalized cluster categories. Our approach makes use of the cluster-tilting objects in the generalized cluster categories: We first observe that cluster-tilting objects in generalized cluster categories are in natural bijection with cluster-tilting subcategories of derived categories, and then prove a recognition theorem for the latter. Using this recognition theorem we give a precise criterion when two cluster equivalent algebras are derived equivalent. For a given algebra we further describe all the derived equivalent algebras which have the same canonical cluster tilting object in their generalized cluster category. Finally we show that in general, if two algebras are cluster equivalent, then (under certain conditions) the algebras can be graded in such a way that the categories of graded modules are derived equivalent. To this end we introduce mutation of graded quivers with potential, and show that this notion reflects mutation in derived categories.

Higher dimensional cluster combinatorics and representation theory

Higher Auslander algebras were introduced by Iyama generalizing classical concepts from representation theory of finite dimensional algebras. Recently these higher analogues of classical representation theory have been increasingly studied. Cyclic polytopes are classical objects of study in convex geometry. In particular, their triangulations have been studied with a view towards generalizing the rich combinatorial structure of triangulations of polygons. In this paper, we demonstrate a connection between these two seemingly unrelated subjects. We study triangulations of even-dimensional cyclic polytopes and tilting modules for higher Auslander algebras of linearly oriented type A which are summands of the cluster tilting module. We show that such tilting modules correspond bijectively to triangulations. Moreover mutations of tilting modules correspond to bistellar flips of triangulations. For any d-representation finite algebra we introduce a certain d-dimensional cluster category and study its cluster tilting objects. For higher Auslander algebras of linearly oriented type A we obtain a similar correspondence between cluster tilting objects and triangulations of a certain cyclic polytope. Finally we study certain functions on generalized laminations in cyclic polytopes, and show that they satisfy analogues of tropical cluster exchange relations. Moreover we observe that the terms of these exchange relations are closely related to the terms occuring in the mutation of cluster tilting objects.

Generating the bounded derived category and perfect ghosts

We show, for a wide class of abelian categories relevant in representation theory and algebraic geometry, that the bounded derived categories have no non-trivial strongly finitely generated thick subcategories containing all perfect complexes. In order to do so we prove a strong converse of the Ghost Lemma for bounded derived categories.

Cohomological symmetry in triangulated categories

We give a criterion for cohomological symmetry in a triangulated category. As an application, we show that such cohomological symmetry holds for all pairs of modules over any exterior algebra.

Stable categories of higher preprojective algebras

We introduce (n+1)-preprojective algebras of algebras of global dimension n. We show that if an algebra is n-representation-finite then its (n+1)-preprojective algebra is self-injective. In this situation, we show that the stable module category of the (n+1)-preprojective algebra is (n+1)-Calabi-Yau, and, more precisely, it is the (n+1)-Amiot cluster category of the stable n-Auslander algebra of the original algebra. In particular this stable category contains an (n+1)-cluster tilting object. We show that even if the (n+1)-preprojective algebra is not self-injective, under certain assumptions (which are always satisfied for n \in {1,2}) the results above still hold for the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay modules.

The image of the derived category in the cluster category

Cluster categories of hereditary algebras have been introduced as orbit categories of their derived categories. Keller has pointed out that for non-hereditary algebras orbit categories need not be triangulated, and he introduced the notion of triangulated hull to overcome this problem. In this paper we study the image if the natural functor from the bounded derived category to the cluster category, that is we investigate how far the orbit category is from being the cluster category. We show that for wide classes of non-piecewise hereditary algebras the orbit category is never equal to the cluster category.

Mutating loops and 2-cycles in 2-CY triangulated categories

We derive an algorithm for mutating quivers of 2-CY tilted algebras that have loops and 2-cycles, under certain specific conditions. Further, we give the classification of the 2-CY tilted algebras coming from standard algebraic 2-CY triangulated categories with a finite number of indecomposables. These form a class of algebras that satisfy the setup for our mutation algorithm.

n-representation-finite algebras and n-APR tilting

We introduce the notion of n-representation-finiteness, generalizing representation-finite hereditary algebras. We establish the procedure of n-APR tilting, and show that it preserves n-representation-finiteness. We give some combinatorial description of this procedure, and use this to completely describe a class of n-representation-finite algebras called "type A".

Cluster tilting and complexity

We study the notion of positive and negative complexity of pairs of objects in cluster categories. The first main result shows that the maximal complexity occurring is either one, two or infinite, depending on the representation type of the underlying hereditary algebra. In the the second result, we study the bounded derived category of a cluster tilted algebra, and show that the maximal complexity occurring is either zero or one whenever the algebra is of finite or tame type.

Constructing tilted algebras from cluster-tilted algebras

Any cluster-tilted algebra is the relation extension of a tilted algebra. We present a method to, given the distribution of a cluster-tilting object in the Auslander-Reiten quiver of the cluster category, construct all tilted algebras whose relation extension is the endomorphism ring of this cluster-tilting object.

Dimensions of triangulated categories via Koszul objects

Lower bounds for the dimension of a triangulated category are provided. These bounds are applied to stable derived categories of Artin algebras and of commutative complete intersection local rings. As a consequence, one obtains bounds for the representation dimensions of certain Artin algebras.

Cohomology of twisted tensor products

It is well known that the cohomology of a tensor product is essentially the tensor product of the cohomologies. We look at twisted tensor products, and investigate to which extend this is still true. We give an explicit description of the $\Ext$-algebra of the tensor product of two modules, and under certain additional conditions, describe an essential part of the Hochschild cohomology ring of a twisted tensor product. As an application, we characterize precisely when the cohomology groups over a quantum complete intersection are finitely generated over the Hochschild cohomology ring. Moreover, both for quantum complete intersections and in related cases we obtain a lower bound for the representation dimension of the algebra.

The representation dimension of quantum complete intersections

We study the representation dimension of the class of algebras known as quantum complete intersections. For such an algebra, we show that the representation dimension is at most twice its codimension. Moreover, we show that the representation dimension of a "homogeneous" quantum complete intersection is strictly larger than its codimension.
