Dynamics of an impulse dielectric barrier discharge in pure ammonia gas using electrical characteristics and imaging analysis

A glow nanosecond discharge from a plane-to-plane impulse dielectric barrier discharge (iDBD) with ammonia gas has been characterised by employing fast imaging and electrical diagnostics. More precisely, the aim of this study is to investigate the dynamics of the discharge establishment under various conditions of applied voltage, pressure, and gas gap. The comparison between the current measurements and the image analysis exposes a strong correlation between the fast excitation and ionization wave velocity and the rising current velocity. This correlation has been found only for diffuse mode discharge since a front wave could be clearly defined, denoted as the luminous propagation front (LPF). Furthermore, this correlation is supported by a proportionality factor of 1.5 10$^{-3}$ which is systematic over the studied conditions. Further investigations are considered to evaluate the relevance of such a value over more parameters.

Time-resolved investigations of a glow mode impulse dielectric barrier discharge in pure ammonia gas by means of E-FISH diagnostic

Time-resolved electric field strength measurements have been performed, using an electric-field induced second harmonic (E-FISH) diagnostic, in a nanosecond glow discharge of an impulse dielectric barrier discharge (iDBD), in an ammonia gas environment. A temporal resolution of 2 ns and a spatial resolution estimated at 70 $\mu$m (given by laser waist) have been achieved. The comparative study of E-FISH measurements with and without a plasma discharge, operated at 4 kHz, reveal the presence of a persistent counter electric field, which is assumed to be caused by charge accumulation in between the AlN dielectrics used. Furthermore, by studying the influence of the applied voltage, the pressure, and the inter-dielectric distance, measurements seem to indicate the presence of charges remaining also in the post-discharge volume from the previous discharge to the next one.\&\#xD;

Ionized particle transport in reactive HiPIMS discharge: correlation between the energy distribution functions of neutral and ionized atoms

We investigated the transport titanium ions produced in a reactive high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) device used for TiN coating deposition. Time-resolved mass spectrometry measurements of ionized sputtered atoms correlated to time-resolved tuneable diode-laser induced fluorescence (TR-TDLIF) measurements of neutral sputtered atoms were used to understand transport features. Based on ion energy distributions of Ti$^+$, we identified four populations of ions and explore their physical origins. The signals of all ion populations decrease strongly when only 1% N$_2$ is added to the Ar/N$_2$ gas mixture. Time resolved mass spectrometry confirms the result reported in previous work: the fast target poisoning when nitrogen is added in HiPIMS discharges. Based on the measured energy distribution functions of Ti$^{++}$, N$^+$, N$_2^+$, and Ar$^+$, we discuss the production of these ions in HiPIMS discharges. The temperature of thermalized sputtered neutral atoms determined by previous TR-TDLIF measurements evidences the physical origin of an ion population with energies lower than 4 eV. According to discharge pressure, cathode voltage, and ion type, we also discuss the physical origins of high-energy ions (>4 eV).
