Integrable systems from inelastic curve flows in 2- and 3- dimensional Minkowski space

Integrable systems are derived from inelastic flows of timelike, spacelike, and null curves in 2- and 3- dimensional Minkowski space. The derivation uses a Lorentzian version of a geometrical moving frame method which is known to yield the modified Korteveg-de Vries (mKdV) equation and the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation in 2- and 3- dimensional Euclidean space, respectively. In 2-dimensional Minkowski space, timelike/spacelike inelastic curve flows are shown to yield the defocusing mKdV equation and its bi-Hamiltonian integrability structure, while inelastic null curve flows are shown to give rise to Burgers' equation and its symmetry integrability structure. In 3-dimensional Minkowski space, the complex defocusing mKdV equation and the NLS equation along with their bi-Hamiltonian integrability structures are obtained from timelike inelastic curve flows, whereas spacelike inelastic curve flows yield an interesting variant of these two integrable equations in which complex numbers are replaced by hyperbolic (split-complex) numbers.

Symmetry properties of conservation laws

Symmetry properties of conservation laws of partial differential equations are developed by using the general method of conservation law multipliers. As main results, simple conditions are given for characterizing when a conservation law and its associated conserved quantity are invariant (and, more generally, homogeneous) under the action of a symmetry. These results are used to show that a recent conservation law formula (due to Ibragimov) is equivalent to a standard formula for the action of an infinitesimal symmetry on a conservation law multiplier.

Symmetries and conservation laws of the generalized Krichever-Novikov equation

A computational classification of contact symmetries and higher-order local symmetries that do not commute with $t,x$, as well as local conserved densities that are not invariant under $t,x$ is carried out for a generalized version of the Krichever-Novikov equation. Several new results are obtained. First, the Krichever-Novikov equation is explicitly shown to have a local conserved density that contains $t,x$. Second, apart from the dilational point symmetries known for special cases of the Krichever-Novikov equation and its generalized version, no other local symmetries with low differential order are found to contain $t,x$. Third, the basic Hamiltonian structure of the Krichever-Novikov equation is used to map the local conserved density containing $t,x$ into a nonlocal symmetry that contains $t,x$. Fourth, a recursion operator is applied to this nonlocal symmetry to produce a hierarchy of nonlocal symmetries that have explicit dependence on $t,x$. When the inverse of the Hamiltonian map is applied to this hierarchy, only trivial conserved densities are obtained.

Oscillatory solitons of U(1)-invariant mKdV equations I: Envelope speed and temporal frequency

Harmonically modulated complex solitary waves which are a generalized type of envelope soliton (herein coined oscillatory solitons) are studied for the two U(1)-invariant integrable generalizations of the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation, given by the Hirota equation and the Sasa-Satsuma equation. A bilinear formulation of these two equations is used to derive the oscillatory 1-soliton and 2-soliton solutions, which are then written out in a physical form parameterized in terms of their speed, modulation frequency, and phase. Depending on the modulation frequency, the speeds of oscillatory waves (1-solitons) can be positive, negative, or zero, in contrast to the strictly positive speed of ordinary solitons. When the speed is zero, an oscillatory wave is a time-periodic standing wave. Properties of the amplitude and phase of oscillatory 1-solitons are derived. Oscillatory 2-solitons are graphically illustrated to describe collisions between two oscillatory 1-solitons in the case when the speeds are distinct. In the special case of equal speeds, oscillatory 2-solitons are shown to reduce to harmonically modulated breather waves.

Oscillatory solitons of U(1)-invariant mKdV equations II: Asymptotic behavior and constants of motion

The Hirota equation and the Sasa-Satsuma equation are U(1)-invariant integrable generalizations of the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation. These two generalizations admit oscillatory solitons, which describe harmonically modulated complex solitary waves parameterized by their speed, modulation frequency, and phase. Depending on the modulation frequency, the speeds of oscillatory waves (1-solitons) can be positive, negative, or zero, in contrast to the strictly positive speed of ordinary solitons. When the speed is zero, an oscillatory wave is a time-periodic standing wave. Oscillatory 2-solitons with non-zero wave speeds are shown to describe overtake collisions of a fast wave and a slow wave moving in the same direction, or head-on collisions of two waves moving in opposite directions. When one wave speed is zero, oscillatory 2-solitons are shown to describe collisions in which a moving wave overtakes a standing wave. An asymptotic analysis using moving coordinates is carried out to show that, in all collisions, the speeds and modulation frequencies of the individual waves are preserved, while the phases and positions undergo a shift such that the center of momentum of the two waves moves at a constant speed. The primary constants of motion as well as some other features of the nonlinear interaction of the colliding waves are discussed.

Conserved integrals for inviscid compressible fluid flow in Riemannian manifolds

An explicit determination of all local conservation laws of kinematic type on moving domains and moving surfaces is presented for the Euler equations of inviscid compressible fluid flow on curved Riemannian manifolds in n>1 dimensions. All corresponding kinematic constants of motion are also determined, along with all Hamiltonian kinematic symmetries and kinematic Casimirs which arise from the Hamiltonian structure of the inviscid compressible fluid equations.

A family of wave-breaking equations generalizing the Camassa-Holm and Novikov equations

A 4-parameter polynomial family of equations generalizing the Camassa-Holm and Novikov equations that describe breaking waves is introduced. A classification of low-order conservation laws, peaked travelling wave solutions, and Lie symmetries is presented for this family. These classifications pick out a 1-parameter equation that has several interesting features: it reduces to the Camassa-Holm and Novikov equations when the polynomial has degree two and three; it has a conserved $H^1$ norm and it possesses $N$-peakon solutions, when the polynomial has any degree; and it exhibits wave-breaking for certain solutions describing collisions between peakons and anti-peakons in the case $N=2$.

Conservation laws of inviscid non-isentropic compressible fluid flow in n>1 spatial dimensions

Recent work giving a classification of kinematic and vorticity conservation laws of compressible fluid flow for barotropic equations of state (where pressure is a function only of the fluid density) in $n>1$ spatial dimensions is extended to general non-isentropic equations of state in which the pressure is also a function of the dynamical entropy (per unit mass) of the fluid. Two main results are obtained. First, we find that apart from the familiar conserved integrals for mass, momentum, energy, angular momentum and Galilean momentum, and volumetric entropy, additional kinematic conserved integrals arise only for non-isentropic equations of state given by a generalized form of the well-known polytropic equation of state with dimension-dependent exponent $γ=1+2/n$, such that the proportionality coefficient is an arbitrary function of the entropy (per unit mass). Second, we show that the only vorticity conserved integrals consist of a circulatory entropy (which vanishes precisely when the fluid flow is irrotational) in all even dimensions. In particular, the vorticity integrals for helicity in odd dimensions and enstrophy in even dimensions are found to be no longer conserved for any non-isentropic equation of state.

Exact solutions of semilinear radial Schrodinger equations by separation of group foliation variables

Explicit solutions are obtained for a class of semilinear radial Schrodinger equations with power nonlinearities in multi-dimensions. These solutions include new similarity solutions and other new group-invariant solutions, as well as new solutions that are not invariant under any symmetries of this class of equations. Many of the solutions have interesting analytical behavior connected with blow-up and dispersion. Several interesting nonlinearity powers arise in these solutions, including the case of the critical (pseudo-conformal) power. In contrast, standard symmetry reduction methods lead to nonlinear ODEs for which few if any explicit solutions can be derived by standard integration methods.

Integrable Systems with Unitary Invariance from Non-stretching Geometric Curve Flows in the Hermitian Symmetric Space Sp(n)/U(n)

A moving parallel frame method is applied to geometric non-stretching curve flows in the Hermitian symmetric space Sp(n)/U(n) to derive new integrable systems with unitary invariance. These systems consist of a bi-Hamiltonian modified Korteweg-de Vries equation and a Hamiltonian sine-Gordon (SG) equation, involving a scalar variable coupled to a complex vector variable. The Hermitian structure of the symmetric space Sp(n)/U(n) is used in a natural way from the beginning in formulating a complex matrix representation of the tangent space sp(n)/u(n) and its bracket relations within the symmetric Lie algebra (u(n),sp(n)).

Symplectically-invariant soliton equations from non-stretching geometric curve flows

A moving frame formulation of geometric non-stretching flows of curves in the Riemannian symmetric spaces $Sp(n+1)/Sp(1)\times Sp(n)$ and $SU(2n)/Sp(n)$ is used to derive two bi-Hamiltonian hierarchies of symplectically-invariant soliton equations. As main results, multi-component versions of the sine-Gordon (SG) equation and the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation exhibiting $Sp(1)\times Sp(n-1)$ invariance are obtained along with their bi-Hamiltonian integrability structure consisting of a shared hierarchy of symmetries and conservation laws generated by a hereditary recursion operator. The corresponding geometric curve flows in $Sp(n+1)/Sp(1)\times Sp(n)$ and $SU(2n)/Sp(n)$ are shown to be described by a non-stretching wave map and a mKdV analog of a non-stretching Schrödinger map.

Conservation laws and symmetries of quasilinear radial wave equations in multi-dimensions

Symmetries and conservation laws are studied for two classes of physically and analytically interesting radial wave equations with power nonlinearities in multi-dimensions. The results consist of two main classifications: all symmetries of point type and all conservation laws of a general energy-momentum type are explicitly determined, including those such as dilations, inversions, similarity energies and conformal energies that exist only for special powers or dimensions. In particular, all variational cases (when a Lagrangian formulation exists) and non-variational cases (when no Lagrangian exists) for these wave equations are considered. As main results, the classification yields generalized energies and radial momenta in certain non-variational cases, which are shown to arise from a new type of Morawetz dilation identity that produces conservation laws for each of the two wave equations in a different way than Noether's theorem.

Group-invariant solutions of semilinear Schrodinger equations in multi- dimensions

Symmetry group methods are applied to obtain all explicit group-invariant radial solutions to a class of semilinear Schrodinger equations in dimensions $n\neq 1$. Both focusing and defocusing cases of a power nonlinearity are considered, including the special case of the conformal power $p=4/n$ relevant for critical dynamics. The methods involve, firstly, reduction of the semilinear Schrodinger equations to group-invariant complex 2nd order ODEs with respect to an optimal set of one-dimensional point symmetry groups, and secondly, use of inherited symmetries, hidden symmetries, and conditional symmetries to solve each ODE by quadratures. Through Noether's theorem, all conservation laws arising from these point symmetry groups are listed.

Spinor derivation of quasilocal mean curvature mass in General Relativity

A spinor derivation is presented for quasilocal mean-curvature mass of spacelike 2-surfaces in General Relativity. The derivation is based on the Sen-Witten spinor identity and involves the introduction of novel nonlinear boundary conditions related to the Dirac current of the spinor at the 2-surface and the tangential flux of a boundary Dirac operator, as well the use of a spin basis adapted to the mean curvature frame of the 2-surface normal space. This setting may provide an alternative approach to a positivity proof for mean-curvature mass based on showing that Witten's equation admits a spinor solution satisfying the proposed nonlinear boundary conditions.

Exact Solutions of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations by the Method of Group Foliation Reduction

A novel symmetry method for finding exact solutions to nonlinear PDEs is illustrated by applying it to a semilinear reaction-diffusion equation in multi-dimensions. The method uses a separation ansatz to solve an equivalent first-order group foliation system whose independent and dependent variables respectively consist of the invariants and differential invariants of a given one-dimensional group of point symmetries for the reaction-diffusion equation. With this group-foliation reduction method, solutions of the reaction-diffusion equation are obtained in an explicit form, including group-invariant similarity solutions and travelling-wave solutions, as well as dynamically interesting solutions that are not invariant under any of the point symmetries admitted by this equation.

New conserved vorticity integrals for moving surfaces in multi-dimensional fluid flow

For inviscid fluid flow in any n-dimensional Riemannian manifold, new conserved vorticity integrals generalizing helicity, enstrophy, and entropy circulation are derived for lower-dimensional surfaces that move along fluid streamlines. Conditions are determined for which the integrals yield constants of motion for the fluid. In the case when an inviscid fluid is isentropic, these new constants of motion generalize Kelvin's circulation theorem from closed loops to closed surfaces of any dimension.

Travelling waves and conservation laws for complex mKdV-type equations

Travelling waves and conservation laws are studied for a wide class of U(1)-invariant complex mKdV equations containing the two known integrable generalizations of the ordinary (real) mKdV equation. The main results on travelling waves include deriving new complex solitary waves and kinks that generalize the well-known mKdV $\sech$ and $\tanh$ solutions. The main results on conservation laws consist of explicitly finding all 1st order conserved densities that yield phase-invariant counterparts of the well-known mKdV conserved densities for momentum, energy, and Galilean energy, and a new conserved density describing the angular twist of complex kink solutions

Interaction properties of complex mKdV solitons

Interaction properties of complex solitons are studied for the two U(1)-invariant integrable generalizations of the mKdV equation, given by the Hirota equation and the Sasa-Satsuma equation, which share the same travelling wave (single-soliton) solution having a {\em sech} profile characterized by a constant speed and a constant phase angle. For both equations, nonlinear interactions where a fast soliton collides with a slow soliton are shown to be described by 2-soliton solutions that can have three different types of interaction profiles depending on the speed ratio and the relative phase angle of the individual solitons. In all cases the shapes and speeds of the solitons are found to be preserved apart from a shift in position such that their center of momentum moves at a constant speed. Moreover, for the Hirota equation, the phase angles of the fast and slow solitons are found to remain unchanged, while for the Sasa-Satsuma equation, the phase angles are shown to undergo a shift such that the relative phase between the fast and slow solitons changes sign.
