Symmetry analysis and exact solutions of semilinear heat flow in multi-dimensions

A symmetry group method is used to obtain exact solutions for a semilinear radial heat equation in $n>1$ dimensions with a general power nonlinearity. The method involves an ansatz technique to solve an equivalent first-order PDE system of similarity variables given by group foliations of this heat equation, using its admitted group of scaling symmetries. This technique yields explicit similarity solutions as well as other explicit solutions of a more general (non-similarity) form having interesting analytical behavior connected with blow up and dispersion. In contrast, standard similarity reduction of this heat equation gives a semilinear ODE that cannot be explicitly solved by familiar integration techniques such as point symmetry reduction or integrating factors.

Classification of conservation laws of compressible isentropic fluid flow in n>1 spatial dimensions

For the Euler equations governing compressible isentropic fluid flow with a barotropic equation of state (where pressure is a function only of the density), local conservation laws in $n>1$ spatial dimensions are fully classified in two primary cases of physical and analytical interest: (1) kinematic conserved densities that depend only on the fluid density and velocity, in addition to the time and space coordinates; (2) vorticity conserved densities that have an essential dependence on the curl of the fluid velocity. A main result of the classification in the kinematic case is that the only equation of state found to be distinguished by admitting extra $n$-dimensional conserved integrals, apart from mass, momentum, energy, angular momentum and Galilean momentum (which are admitted for all equations of state), is the well-known polytropic equation of state with dimension-dependent exponent $γ=1+2/n$. In the vorticity case, no distinguished equations of state are found to arise, and here the main result of the classification is that, in all even dimensions $n\geq 2$, a generalized version of Kelvin's two-dimensional circulation theorem is obtained for a general equation of state.

Quaternionic Soliton Equations from Hamiltonian Curve Flows in HP^n

A bi-Hamiltonian hierarchy of quaternion soliton equations is derived from geometric non-stretching flows of curves in the quaternionic projective space $HP^n$. The derivation adapts the method and results in recent work by one of us on the Hamiltonian structure of non-stretching curve flows in Riemannian symmetric spaces $M=G/H$ by viewing $HP^n \simeq {\rm U}(n+1,H)/{\rm U}(1,H) \times {\rm U}(n,H)\simeq {\rm Sp}(n+1)/{\rm Sp}(1)\times {\rm Sp}(n)$ as a symmetric space in terms of compact real symplectic groups and quaternion unitary groups. As main results, scalar-vector (multi-component) versions of the sine-Gordon (SG) equation and the modified Korteveg-de Vries (mKdV) equation are obtained along with their bi-Hamiltonian integrability structure consisting of a shared hierarchy of quaternionic symmetries and conservation laws generated by a hereditary recursion operator. The corresponding geometric curve flows in $HP^n$ are shown to be described by a non-stretching wave map and a mKdV analog of a non-stretching Schrodinger map.

Curve Flows in Lagrange-Finsler Geometry, Bi-Hamiltonian Structures and Solitons

Methods in Riemann-Finsler geometry are applied to investigate bi-Hamiltonian structures and related mKdV hierarchies of soliton equations derived geometrically from regular Lagrangians and flows of non-stretching curves in tangent bundles. The total space geometry and nonholonomic flows of curves are defined by Lagrangian semisprays inducing canonical nonlinear connections (N-connections), Sasaki type metrics and linear connections. The simplest examples of such geometries are given by tangent bundles on Riemannian symmetric spaces $G/SO(n)$ provided with an N-connection structure and an adapted metric, for which we elaborate a complete classification, and by generalized Lagrange spaces with constant Hessian. In this approach, bi-Hamiltonian structures are derived for geometric mechanical models and (pseudo) Riemannian metrics in gravity. The results yield horizontal/ vertical pairs of vector sine-Gordon equations and vector mKdV equations, with the corresponding geometric curve flows in the hierarchies described in an explicit form by nonholonomic wave maps and mKdV analogs of nonholonomic Schrodinger maps on a tangent bundle.

Invertible Mappings of Nonlinear PDEs to Linear PDEs Through Admitted Conservation Laws

An algorithmic method using conservation law multipliers is introduced that yields necessary and sufficient conditions to find invertible mappings of a given nonlinear PDE to some linear PDE and to construct such a mapping when it exists. Previous methods yielded such conditions from admitted point or contact symmetries of the nonlinear PDE. Through examples, these two linearization approaches are contrasted.

Group-invariant soliton equations and bi-Hamiltonian geometric curve flows in Riemannian symmetric spaces

Universal bi-Hamiltonian hierarchies of group-invariant (multicomponent) soliton equations are derived from non-stretching geometric curve flows $\map(t,x)$ in Riemannian symmetric spaces $M=G/H$, including compact semisimple Lie groups $M=K$ for $G=K\times K$, $H={\rm diag} G$. The derivation of these soliton hierarchies utilizes a moving parallel frame and connection 1-form along the curve flows, related to the Klein geometry of the Lie group $G\supset H$ where $H$ is the local frame structure group. The soliton equations arise in explicit form from the induced flow on the frame components of the principal normal vector $N=\covder{x}\mapder{x}$ along each curve, and display invariance under the equivalence subgroup in $H$ that preserves the unit tangent vector $T=\mapder{x}$ in the framing at any point $x$ on a curve. Their bi-Hamiltonian integrability structure is shown to be geometrically encoded in the Cartan structure equations for torsion and curvature of the parallel frame and its connection 1-form in the tangent space $T_\map M$ of the curve flow. The hierarchies include group-invariant versions of sine-Gordon (SG) and modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) soliton equations that are found to be universally given by curve flows describing non-stretching wave maps and mKdV analogs of non-stretching Schrodinger maps on $G/H$. These results provide a geometric interpretation and explicit bi-Hamiltonian formulation for many known multicomponent soliton equations. Moreover, all examples of group-invariant (multicomponent) soliton equations given by the present geometric framework can be constructed in an explicit fashion based on Cartan's classification of symmetric spaces.

Generalized Symmetries of Massless Free Fields on Minkowski Space

A complete and explicit classification of generalized, or local, symmetries of massless free fields of spin $s \geq 1/2$ is carried out. Up to equivalence, these are found to consists of the conformal symmetries and their duals, new chiral symmetries of order $2s$, and their higher-order extensions obtained by Lie differentiation with respect to conformal Killing vectors. In particular, the results yield a complete classification of generalized symmetries of the Dirac-Weyl neutrino equation, Maxwell's equations, and the linearized gravity equations.

Symmetries, conservation laws and exact solutions of static plasma equilibrium systems in three dimensions

For static reductions of isotropic and anisotropic Magnetohydrodynamics plasma equilibrium models, a complete classification of admitted point symmetries and conservation laws up to first order is presented. It is shown that the symmetry algebra for the isotropic equations is finite-dimensional, whereas anisotropic equations admit infinite symmetries depending on a free function defined on the set of magnetic surfaces. A direct transformation is established between isotropic and anisotropic equations, which provides an efficient way of constructing new exact anisotropic solutions. In particular, axially and helically symmetric anisotropic plasma equilibria arise from classical Grad-Shafranov and JFKO equations.

Bi-Hamiltonian operators, integrable flows of curves using moving frames, and geometric map equations

Moving frames of various kinds are used to derive bi-Hamiltonian operators and associated hierarchies of multi-component soliton equations from group-invariant flows of non-stretching curves in constant curvature manifolds and Lie group manifolds. The hierarchy in the constant-curvature case consists of a vector mKdV equation coming from a parallel frame, a vector potential mKdV equation coming from a covariantly-constant frame, and higher order counterparts generated by an underlying vector mKdV recursion operator. In the Lie-group case the hierarchy comprises a group-invariant analog of the vector NLS equation coming from a left-invariant frame, along with higher order counterparts generated by a recursion operator that is like a square-root of the mKdV one. The corresponding respective curve flows are found to be given by geometric nonlinear PDEs, specifically mKdV and group-invariant analogs of Schrodinger maps. In all cases the hierarchies also contain variants of vector sine-Gordon equations arising from the kernel of the respective recursion operators. The geometric PDEs that describe the corresponding curve flows are shown to be wave maps. Full details of these results are presented for two main cases: $S^2,S^3\simeq SU(2)$.

Hamiltonian curve flows in Lie groups $G\subset U(N)$ and vector NLS, mKdV, sine-Gordon soliton equations

A bi-Hamiltonian hierarchy of complex vector soliton equations is derived from geometric flows of non-stretching curves in the Lie groups $G=SO(N+1),SU(N)\subset U(N)$, generalizing previous work on integrable curve flows in Riemannian symmetric spaces $G/SO(N)$. The derivation uses a parallel frame and connection along the curves, involving the Klein geometry of the group $G$. This is shown to yield the two known $U(N-1)$-invariant vector generalizations of the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation and the complex modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation, as well as $U(N-1)$-invariant vector generalizations of the sine-Gordon (SG) equation found in recent symmetry-integrability classifications of hyperbolic vector equations. The curve flows themselves are described in explicit form by chiral wave maps, chiral variants of Schrodinger maps, and mKdV analogs.

Hamiltonian Flows of Curves in symmetric spaces G/SO(N) and Vector Soliton Equations of mKdV and Sine-Gordon Type

The bi-Hamiltonian structure of the two known vector generalizations of the mKdV hierarchy of soliton equations is derived in a geometrical fashion from flows of non-stretching curves in Riemannian symmetric spaces G/SO(N). These spaces are exhausted by the Lie groups G=SO(N+1),SU(N). The derivation of the bi-Hamiltonian structure uses a parallel frame and connection along the curves, tied to a zero curvature Maurer-Cartan form on G, and this yields the vector mKdV recursion operators in a geometric O(N-1)-invariant form. The kernel of these recursion operators is shown to yield two hyperbolic vector generalizations of the sine-Gordon equation. The corresponding geometric curve flows in the hierarchies are described in an explicit form, given by wave map equations and mKdV analogs of Schrodinger map equations.

Mean curvature flow and quasilocal mass for two-surfaces in Hamiltonian General Relativity

A family of quasilocal mass definitions that includes as special cases the Hawking mass and the Brown-York ``rest mass'' energy is derived for spacelike 2-surfaces in spacetime. The definitions involve an integral of powers of the norm of the spacetime mean curvature vector of the 2-surface, whose properties are connected with apparent horizons. In particular, for any spacelike 2-surface, the direction of mean curvature is orthogonal (dual in the normal space) to a unique normal direction in which the 2-surface has vanishing expansion in spacetime. The quasilocal mass definitions are obtained by an analysis of boundary terms arising in the gravitational ADM Hamiltonian on hypersurfaces with a spacelike 2-surface boundary, using a geometric time-flow chosen proportional to the dualized mean curvature vector field at the boundary surface. A similar analysis is made choosing a geometric rotational flow given in terms of the twist covector of the dual pair of mean curvature vector fields, which leads to a family of quasilocal angular momentum definitions involving the squared norm of the twist. The large sphere limit of these definitions is shown to yield the ADM mass and angular momentum in asymptotically flat spacetimes, while at apparent horizons a quasilocal version of the Gibbons-Penrose inequality is derived. Finally, some results concerning positivity are proved for the quasilocal masses, motivated by consideration of spacelike mean curvature flow of 2-surfaces in spacetime.

Conservation Laws and Symmetries of Semilinear Radial Wave Equations

Classifications of symmetries and conservation laws are presented for a variety of physically and analytically interesting wave equations with power onlinearities in n spatial dimensions: a radial hyperbolic equation, a radial Schrodinger equation and its derivative variant, and two proposed radial generalizations of modified Korteweg--de Vries equations, as well as Hamiltonian variants. The mains results classify all admitted local point symmetries and all admitted local conserved densities depending on up to first order spatial derivatives, including any that exist only for special powers or dimensions. All such cases for which these wave equations admit, in particular, dilational energies or conformal energies and inversion symmetries are determined. In addition, potential systems arising from the classified conservation laws are used to determine nonlocal symmetries and nonlocal conserved quantities admitted by these equations. As illustrative applications, a discussion is given of energy norms, conserved H^s norms, critical powers for blow-up solutions, and one-dimensional optimal symmetry groups for invariant solutions.

Some symmetry classifications of hyperbolic vector evolution equations

Motivated by recent work on integrable flows of curves and 1+1 dimensional sigma models, several O(N)-invariant classes of hyperbolic equations $u_{tx} =f(u,u_t,u_x)$ for an $N$-component vector $u(t,x)$ are considered. In each class we find all scaling-homogeneous equations admitting a higher symmetry of least possible scaling weight. Sigma model interpretations of these equations are presented.

Symmetries, conservation laws, and cohomology of Maxwell's equations using potentials

New nonlocal symmetries and conservation laws are derived for Maxwell's equations using a covariant system of joint vector potentials for the electromagnetic tensor field and its dual. A key property of this system, as well as of this class of new symmetries and conservation laws, is their invariance under the duality transformation that exchanges the electromagnetic field with its dual. The nonlocal symmetries of Maxwell's equations come from an explicit classification of all symmetries of a certain geometric form admitted by the joint potential system in Lorentz gauge. In addition to scaling and duality-rotation symmetries, and the well-known Poincare and dilation symmetries which involve homothetic Killing vectors, the classification yields new geometric symmetries involving Killing-Yano tensors related to rotations/boosts and inversions. The nonlocal conservation laws of Maxwell's equations are constructed from these geometric symmetries by applying a formula that uses the joint potentials and directly generates conserved currents from any (local or nonlocal) symmetries of Maxwell's equations. This formula is shown to arise through a series of mappings that relate, respectively, symmetries/adjoint-symmetries of the joint potential system and adjoint-symmetries/symmetries of Maxwell's equations. The mappings are derived as by-products of the study of cohomology of closed 1-forms and 2-forms locally constructed from the electromagnetic field and its derivatives to some finite order for all solutions of Maxwell's equations. The only nontrivial cohomology is shown to consist of the electromagnetic field (2-form) itself as well as its dual (2-form), and this 2-form cohomology is killed by the introduction of corresponding potentials.

Exact solutions of semilinear radial wave equations in n dimensions

Exact solutions are derived for an n-dimensional radial wave equation with a general power nonlinearity. The method, which is applicable more generally to other nonlinear PDEs, involves an ansatz technique to solve a first-order PDE system of group-invariant variables given by group foliations of the wave equation, using the one-dimensional admitted point symmetry groups. (These groups comprise scalings and time translations, admitted for any nonlinearity power, in addition to space-time inversions admitted for a particular conformal nonlinearity power). This is shown to yield not only group-invariant solutions as derived by standard symmetry reduction, but also other exact solutions of a more general form. In particular, solutions with interesting analytical behavior connected with blow ups as well as static monopoles are obtained.

Gauge theory deformations and novel Yang-Mills Chern-Simons field theories with torsion

A basic problem of classical field theory, which has attracted growing attention over the past decade, is to find and classify all nonlinear deformations of linear abelian gauge theories. The first part of this paper summarizes and significantly elaborates a field- theoretic deformation method developed in earlier work. As a key contribution presented here, a universal geometrical structure common to a large class of nonlinear gauge theory examples is uncovered. This structure is derived geometrically from the deformed gauge symmetry and is characterized by a covariant derivative operator plus a nonlinear field strength, related through the curvature of the covariant derivative. The scope of these results encompasses Yang-Mills theory, Freedman-Townsend theory, Einstein gravity theory, in addition to their many interesting types of novel generalizations that have been found in the past several years. The second part of the paper presents a new geometrical type of Yang-Mills generalization in three dimensions motivated from considering torsion in the context of nonlinear sigma models with Lie group targets (chiral theories). The generalization is derived by a deformation analysis of linear abelian Yang-Mills Chern-Simons gauge theory. Torsion is introduced geometrically through a duality with chiral models obtained from the chiral field form of self-dual 2+2 dimensional Yang-Mills theory under reduction to 2+1 dimensions. Field-theoretic and geometric features of the resulting nonlinear gauge theories with torsion are discussed.

Properties of the symplectic structure of General Relativity for spatially bounded spacetime regions

We continue a previous analysis of the covariant Hamiltonian symplectic structure of General Relativity for spatially bounded regions of spacetime. To allow for near complete generality, the Hamiltonian is formulated using any fixed hypersurface, with a boundary given by a closed spacelike 2-surface. A main result is that we obtain Hamiltonians associated to Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions on the gravitational field coupled to matter sources, in particular a Klein-Gordon field, an electromagnetic field, and a set of Yang-Mills-Higgs fields. The Hamiltonians are given by a covariant form of the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner Hamiltonian modified by a surface integral term that depends on the particular boundary conditions. The general form of this surface integral involves an underlying ``energy-momentum'' vector in the spacetime tangent space at the spatial boundary 2-surface. We give examples of the resulting Dirichlet and Neumann vectors for topologically spherical 2-surfaces in Minkowski spacetime, spherically symmetric spacetimes, and stationary axisymmetric spacetimes. Moreover, we show the relation between these vectors and the ADM energy-momentum vector for a 2-surface taken in a limit to be spatial infinity in asymptotically flat spacetimes. We also discuss the geometrical properties of the Dirichlet and Neumann vectors and obtain several striking results relating these vectors to the mean curvature and normal curvature connection of the 2-surface. Most significantly, the part of the Dirichlet vector normal to the 2-surface depends only the spacetime metric at this surface and thereby defines a geometrical normal vector field on the 2-surface. Properties and examples of this normal vector are discussed.
