Covariant Hamiltonian boundary conditions in General Relativity for spatially bounded spacetime regions

We investigate the covariant Hamiltonian symplectic structure of General Relativity for spatially bounded regions of spacetime with a fixed time-flow vector. For existence of a well-defined Hamiltonian variational principle taking into account a spatial boundary, it is necessary to modify the standard Arnowitt-Deser-Misner Hamiltonian by adding a boundary term whose form depends on the spatial boundary conditions for the gravitational field. The most general mathematically allowed boundary conditions and corresponding boundary terms are shown to be determined by solving a certain equation obtained from the symplectic current pulled back to the hypersurface boundary of the spacetime region. A main result is that we obtain a covariant derivation of Dirichlet, Neumann, and mixed type boundary conditions on the gravitational field at a fixed boundary hypersurface, together with the associated Hamiltonian boundary terms. As well, we establish uniqueness of these boundary conditions under certain assumptions motivated by the form of the symplectic current. Our analysis uses a Noether charge method which extends and unifies several results developed in recent literature for General Relativity. As an illustration of the method, we apply it to the Maxwell field equations to derive allowed boundary conditions and boundary terms for existence of a well-defined Hamiltonian variational principle for an electromagnetic field in a fixed spatially bounded region of Minkowski spacetime.

Conservation laws of scaling-invariant field equations

A simple conservation law formula for field equations with a scaling symmetry is presented. The formula uses adjoint-symmetries of the given field equation and directly generates all local conservation laws for any conserved quantities having non-zero scaling weight. Applications to several soliton equations, fluid flow and nonlinear wave equations, Yang-Mills equations and the Einstein gravitational field equations are considered.

Symmetries and currents of massless neutrino fields, electromagnetic and graviton fields

A recent complete, explicit classification of all locally constructed symmetries and currents for free spinorial massless spin s fields on Minkowski space is summarized and extended to give a classification of all covariant symmetry operators and conserved tensors. The results, for physically interesting cases, are also presented in tensorial form for electromagnetic and graviton fields (s=1,2) and in Dirac 4-spinor form for neutrino fields (s=1/2).

Parity violating spin-two gauge theories

Nonlinear covariant parity-violating deformations of free spin-two gauge theory are studied in n>2 spacetime dimensions, using a linearized frame and spin-connection formalism, for a set of massless spin-two fields. It is shown that the only such deformations yielding field equations with a second order quasilinear form are the novel algebra-valued types in n=3 and n=5 dimensions already found in some recent related work concentrating on lowest order deformations. The complete form of the deformation to all orders in n=5 dimensions is worked out here and some features of the resulting new algebra-valued spin-two gauge theory are discussed. In particular, the internal algebra underlying this theory on 5-dimensional Minkowski space is shown to cause the energy for the spin-two fields to be of indefinite sign. Finally, a Kaluza-Klein reduction to n=4 dimensions is derived, giving a parity-violating nonlinear gauge theory of a coupled set of spin-two, spin-one, and spin-zero massless fields.

On multi-graviton and multi-gravitino gauge theories

This paper studies nonlinear deformations of the linear gauge theory of any number of spin-2 and spin-3/2 fields with general formal multiplication rules in place of standard Grassmann rules for manipulating the fields, in four spacetime dimensions. General possibilities for multiplication rules and coupling constants are simultaneously accommodated by regarding the set of fields equivalently as a single algebra-valued spin-2 field and single algebra-valued spin-3/2 field, where the underlying algebra is factorized into a field-coupling part and an internal multiplication part. The condition that there exist a gauge invariant Lagrangian (to within a divergence) for these algebra-valued fields is used to derive determining equations whose solutions give all allowed deformation terms, yielding nonlinear field equations and nonabelian gauge symmetries, together with all allowed formal multiplication rules as needed in the Lagrangian for demonstration of invariance under the gauge symmetries and for derivation of the field equations. In the case of spin-2 fields alone, the main result of this analysis is that all deformations (without any higher derivatives than appear in the linear theory) are equivalent to an algebra-valued Einstein gravity theory. By a systematic examination of factorizations of the algebra, a novel type of nonlinear gauge theory of two or more spin-2 fields is found, where the coupling for the fields is based on structure constants of an anticommutative, anti-associative algebra, and with formal multiplication rules that make the fields anticommuting (while products obey anti-associativity). Supersymmetric extensions of these results are obtained in the more general case when spin-3/2 fields are included.

Exotic Yang-Mills dilaton gauge theories

A exotic class of nonlinear p-form nonabelian gauge theories is studied, arising from the most general allowed nontrivial deformation of linear abelian gauge theory for a set of massless 1-form fields and 2-form fields in four dimensions. These theories combine a Chapline-Manton type coupling of the 1-forms and 2-forms, along with a Yang-Mills coupling of the 1-forms, a Freedman-Townsend coupling of the 2-forms, and an extended Freedman-Townsend type coupling between the 1-forms and 2-forms. It is shown that the resulting theories have a geometrically interesting dual formulation that is equivalent to an exotic Yang-Mills dilaton theory involving a nonlinear sigma field. In particular, the nonlinear sigma field couples to the Yang-Mills 1-form field through a generalized Chern class 4-form term.

Direct construction method for conservation laws of partial differential equations. Part I: Examples of conservation law classifications

An effective algorithmic method is presented for finding the local conservation laws for partial differential equations with any number of independent and dependent variables. The method does not require the use or existence of a variational principle and reduces the calculation of conservation laws to solving a system of linear determining equations similar to that for finding symmetries. An explicit construction formula is derived which yields a conservation law for each solution of the determining system. In the first of two papers (Part I), examples of nonlinear wave equations are used to exhibit the method. Classification results for conservation laws of these equations are obtained. In a second paper (Part II), a general treatment of the method is given.

Direct construction method for conservation laws of partial differential equations. Part II: General treatment

This paper gives a general treatment and proof of the direct conservation law method presented in Part I. In particular, the treatment here applies to finding the local conservation laws of any system of one or more partial differential equations expressed in a standard Cauchy-Kovalevskaya form. A summary of the general method and its effective computational implementation is also given.

Gauge theories of Yang-Mills vector fields coupled to antisymmetric tensor fields

A nonabelian class of massless/massive nonlinear gauge theories of Yang-Mills vector potentials coupled to Freedman-Townsend antisymmetric tensor potentials is constructed in four spacetime dimensions. These theories involve an extended Freedman-Townsend type coupling between the vector and tensor fields, and a Chern-Simons mass term with the addition of a Higgs type coupling of the tensor fields to the vector fields in the massive case. Geometrical, field theoretic, and algebraic aspects of the theories are discussed in detail. In particular, the geometrical structure mixes and unifies features of Yang-Mills theory and Freedman-Townsend theory formulated in terms of Lie algebra valued curvatures and connections associated to the fields and nonlinear field strengths. The theories arise from a general determination of all possible geometrical nonlinear deformations of linear abelian gauge theory for 1-form fields and 2-form fields with an abelian Chern-Simons mass term in four dimensions. For this type of deformation (with typical assumptions on the allowed form considered for terms in the gauge symmetries and field equations), an explicit classification of deformation terms at first-order is obtained, and uniqueness of deformation terms at all higher-orders is proven. This leads to a uniqueness result for the nonabelian class of theories constructed here.

Conserved currents of massless fields of spin s>0

A complete and explicit classification of all locally constructed conserved currents and underlying conserved tensors is obtained for massless linear symmetric spinor fields of any spin s>0 in four dimensional flat spacetime. These results generalize the recent classification in the spin s=1 case of all conserved currents locally constructed from the electromagnetic spinor field. The present classification yields spin s>0 analogs of the well-known electromagnetic stress-energy tensor and Lipkin's zilch tensor, as well as a spin s>0 analog of a novel chiral tensor found in the spin s=1 case. The chiral tensor possesses odd parity under a duality symmetry (i.e., a phase rotation) on the spin s field, in contrast to the even parity of the stress-energy and zilch tensors. As a main result, it is shown that every locally constructed conserved current for each s>0 is equivalent to a sum of elementary linear conserved currents, quadratic conserved currents associated to the stress-energy, zilch, and chiral tensors, and higher derivative extensions of these currents in which the spin s field is replaced by its repeated conformally-weighted Lie derivatives with respect to conformal Killing vectors of flat spacetime. Moreover, all of the currents have a direct, unified characterization in terms of Killing spinors. The cases s=2, s=1/2 and s=3/2 provide a complete set of conserved quantities for propagation of gravitons (i.e., linearized gravity waves), neutrinos and gravitinos, respectively, on flat spacetime. The physical meaning of the zilch and chiral quantities is discussed.

Novel generalization of three-dimensional Yang-Mills theory

A class of new nonabelian gauge theories for vector fields on three manifolds is presented. The theories describe a generalization of three-dimensional Yang-Mills theory featuring a novel nonlinear gauge symmetry and field equations for Lie-algebra valued vector potential fields. The nonlinear form of the gauge symmetry and field equations relies on the vector cross-product and vector curl operator available only in three dimensions and makes use of an auxiliary Lie bracket together with the Lie bracket used in Yang-Mills theory. A gauge covariant formulation of the new theories is given which utilizes the covariant derivative and curvature from the geometrical formulation of Yang-Mills theory. Further features of the new theories are discussed.

Classification of local conservation laws of Maxwell's equations

A complete and explicit classification of all independent local conservation laws of Maxwell's equations in four dimensional Minkowski space is given. Besides the elementary linear conservation laws, and the well-known quadratic conservation laws associated to the conserved stress-energy and zilch tensors, there are also chiral quadratic conservation laws which are associated to a new conserved tensor. The chiral conservation laws possess odd parity under the electric-magnetic duality transformation of Maxwell's equations, in contrast to the even parity of the stress-energy and zilch conservation laws. The main result of the classification establishes that every local conservation law of Maxwell's equations is equivalent to a linear combination of the elementary conservation laws, the stress-energy and zilch conservation laws, the chiral conservation laws, and their higher order extensions obtained by replacing the electromagnetic field tensor by its repeated Lie derivatives with respect to the conformal Killing vectors on Minkowski space. The classification is based on spinorial methods and provides a direct, unified characterization of the conservation laws in terms of Killing spinors.

Global existence for wave maps with torsion

Wave maps (i.e. nonlinear sigma models) with torsion are considered in 2+1 dimensions. Global existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem is proven for certain reductions under a translation group action: invariant wave maps into general targets, and equivariant wave maps into Lie group targets. In the case of Lie group targets (i.e. chiral models), a geometrical characterization of invariant and equivariant wave maps is given in terms of a formulation using frames.
