Novel gluino cascade decays in E6 inspired models

We point out that the extra neutralinos and charginos, generically appearing in a large class of $E_6$ inspired models, lead to distinctive signatures from gluino cascade decays involving longer decay chains, more visible transverse energy, softer jets and leptons and less missing transverse energy than in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). On the one hand, this makes the gluino harder to discover for certain types of conventional analysis. On the other hand, the $E_6$ inspired models have enhanced 3- and 4-lepton signatures, as compared to the MSSM, making the gluino more visible in these channels. After extensive scans over the parameter space, we focus on representative benchmark points for the two models, and perform a detailed Monte Carlo analysis of the 3-lepton channel, showing that $E_6$ inspired models are clearly distinguishable from the MSSM in gluino cascade decays.

A4xSU(5) SUSY GUT of Flavour with Trimaximal Neutrino Mixing

Recent T2K, MINOS and Double CHOOZ results, together with global fits of mixing parameters, indicate a sizeable reactor angle theta13 ~ 8 deg which, if confirmed, would rule out tri-bimaximal (TB) lepton mixing. Recently two of us studied the vacuum alignment of the Altarelli-Feruglio A4 family symmetry model including additional flavons in the 1' and 1" representations, leading to so-called "trimaximal" neutrino mixing and allowing a potentially large reactor angle. Here we show how such a model may arise from a Supersymmetric (SUSY) Grand Unified Theory (GUT) based on SU(5), leading to sum rule bounds |s| < thetaC/3, |a| < (r + thetaC/3)|cos delta|/2, where s,a,r parameterise the solar, atmospheric and reactor angle deviations from their TB mixing values, delta is the CP violating oscillation phase, and thetaC is the Cabibbo angle.

E6SSM vs MSSM gluino phenomenology

The E6SSM is a promising model based on the group E6, assumed to be broken at the GUT scale, leading to the group SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)\times U(1)' at the TeV scale. It gives a solution to the MSSM μ-problem without introducing massless axions, gauge anomalies or cosmological domain walls. The model contains three families of complete 27s of E6, giving a richer phenomenology than the MSSM. The E6SSM generically predicts gluino cascade decay chains which are about 2 steps longer than the MSSM's due to the presence of several light neutralino states. This implies less missing (and more visible) transverse momentum in collider experiments and kinematical distributions such as M_eff are different. Scans of parameter space and MC analysis suggest that current SUSY search strategies and exclusion limits have to be reconsidered.

A4 models of tri-bimaximal-reactor mixing

Recent results from T2K, MINOS and Double CHOOZ all indicate a sizeable reactor angle theta_13 which would rule out conventional tri-bimaximal lepton mixing. However, it is possible to maintain the tri-bimaximal solar and atmospheric mixing angle predictions, theta_12 ~ 35 degrees, theta_23 ~ 45 degrees even for a quite sizeable reactor angle theta_13 ~ 8 degrees, using an ansatz called tri-bimaximal-reactor (TBR) mixing proposed by one of us some time ago. We propose an explicit A4 model of leptons based on the type I seesaw mechanism at both the effective and the renormalisable level which, together with vacuum alignment, leads to surprisingly accurate TBR neutrino mixing, with the second order corrections to mixing angles having small coefficients.

Trimaximal mixing with predicted θ_13 from a new type of constrained sequential dominance

Following the recent T2K indication of a sizeable reactor angle, we present a class of models which fix θ_{13} while preserving trimaximal solar mixing. The models are based on a new type of constrained sequential dominance involving new vacuum alignments, along the (1,2,0)^T or (1,0,2)^T directions in flavour space. We show that such alignments are easily achieved using orthogonality, and may replace the role of the subdominant flavon alignment (1,1,1)^T in constrained sequential dominance. In such models, with a normal hierarchical spectrum, the reactor angle is related to a ratio of neutrino masses by θ_{13} = \frac{\sqrt{2}}{3}\frac{m^ν_2}{m^ν_3}, leading to θ_{13} \sim 5^\circ - 6^\circ, while the atmospheric angle is given by the sum rule θ_{23} \approx 45^\circ + \sqrt{2} θ_{13} \cos δ. We find that leptogenesis is unsuppressed due to the violation of form dominance and that the CP violating phase responsible for leptogenesis is precisely equal to the Dirac CP phase δ, providing a direct link between leptogenesis and neutrino mixing in this class of models.

Radiative Inflation and Dark Energy

We propose a model based on radiative symmetry breaking that combines inflation with Dark Energy and is consistent with the WMAP 7-year regions. The radiative inflationary potential leads to the prediction of a spectral index 0.955 \lesssim n_S \lesssim 0.967 and a tensor to scalar ratio 0.142 \lesssim r \lesssim 0.186, both consistent with current data but testable by the Planck experiment. The radiative symmetry breaking close to the Planck scale gives rise to a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson with a gravitationally suppressed mass which can naturally play the role of a quintessence field responsible for Dark Energy. Finally, we present a possible extra dimensional scenario in which our model could be realised.

Renormalisation group improved leptogenesis in family symmetry models

We study renormalisation group (RG) corrections relevant for leptogenesis in the case of family symmetry models such as the Altarelli-Feruglio A4 model of tri-bimaximal lepton mixing or its extension to tri-maximal mixing. Such corrections are particularly relevant since in large classes of family symmetry models, to leading order, the CP violating parameters of leptogenesis would be identically zero at the family symmetry breaking scale, due to the form dominance property. We find that RG corrections violate form dominance and enable such models to yield viable leptogenesis at the scale of right-handed neutrino masses. More generally, the results of this paper show that RG corrections to leptogenesis cannot be ignored for any family symmetry model involving sizeable neutrino and tau Yukawa couplings.

Towards a Realistic F-theory GUT

We consider semi-local F-theory GUTs arising from a single E_8 point of local enhancement, leading to simple GUT groups based on E_6, SO(10) and SU(5) with SU(3), SU(4) and SU(5) spectral covers, respectively. Assuming the minimal Z_2 monodromy, we determine the homology classes and the associated spectra after flux breaking for each case. Our analysis includes the GUT singlets which have hitherto been ignored but which play a crucial role in phenomenology. Using these results we construct an E_6 based model that demonstrates, for the first time, that it is possible to construct a phenomenologically viable model which leads to the MSSM at low energies. The exotics that result from flux breaking all get a large mass when singlet fields acquire vacuum expectation values driven by D- and F-flatness. Due to the underlying GUT symmetry and the U(1)s descending from E_8, bare baryon- and lepton-number violating terms are forbidden up to and including dimension 5. As a result nucleon decay is naturally suppressed below present bounds. The mu-term is forbidden by the U(1) but is generated at the SUSY breaking scale when a further singlet field acquires a TeV scale vacuum expectation value, driven by the spontaneous breaking of the electroweak symmetry. After including the effect of flux and instanton corrections acceptable quark and charged lepton masses and mixing angles can be obtained. Neutrinos get a mass from the see-saw mechanism through their coupling to singlet neutrinos that acquire large Majorana mass as a result of the monodromy.

Trimaximal neutrino mixing from vacuum alignment in A4 and S4 models

Recent T2K results indicate a sizeable reactor angle theta_13 which would rule out exact tri-bimaximal lepton mixing. We study the vacuum alignment of the Altarelli-Feruglio A4 family symmetry model including additional flavons in the 1' and 1" representations and show that it leads to trimaximal mixing in which the second column of the lepton mixing matrix consists of the column vector (1,1,1)^T/sqrt{3}, with a potentially large reactor angle. In order to limit the reactor angle and control the higher order corrections, we propose a renormalisable S4 model in which the 1' and 1" flavons of A4 are unified into a doublet of S4 which is spontaneously broken to A4 by a flavon which enters the neutrino sector at higher order. We study the vacuum alignment in the S4 model and show that it predicts accurate trimaximal mixing with approximate tri-bimaximal mixing, leading to a new mixing sum rule testable in future neutrino experiments. Both A4 and S4 models preserve form dominance and hence predict zero leptogenesis, up to renormalisation group corrections.

Neutrino Mass Models: Impact of non-zero reactor angle

In this talk neutrino mass models are reviewed and the impact of a non-zero reactor angle and other deviations from tri-bimaximal mixing are discussed. We propose some benchmark models, where the only way to discriminate between them is by high precision neutrino oscillation experiments.

Right unitarity triangles and tri-bimaximal mixing from discrete symmetries and unification

We propose new classes of models which predict both tri-bimaximal lepton mixing and a right-angled Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) unitarity triangle, alpha approximately 90 degrees. The ingredients of the models include a supersymmetric (SUSY) unified gauge group such as SU(5), a discrete family symmetry such as A4 or S4, a shaping symmetry including products of Z2 and Z4 groups as well as spontaneous CP violation. We show how the vacuum alignment in such models allows a simple explanation of alpha approximately 90 degrees by a combination of purely real or purely imaginary vacuum expectation values (vevs) of the flavons responsible for family symmetry breaking. This leads to quark mass matrices with 1-3 texture zeros that satisfy the phase sum rule and lepton mass matrices that satisfy the lepton mixing sum rule together with a new prediction that the leptonic CP violating oscillation phase is close to either 0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees depending on the model, with neutrino masses being purely real (no complex Majorana phases). This leads to the possibility of having right-angled unitarity triangles in both the quark and lepton sectors.

Bino Dark Matter and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis in the Constrained E6SSM with Massless Inert Singlinos

We discuss a new variant of the E6 inspired supersymmetric standard model (E6SSM) in which the two inert singlinos are exactly massless and the dark matter candidate has a dominant bino component. A successful relic density is achieved via a novel mechanism in which the bino scatters inelastically into heavier inert Higgsinos during the time of thermal freeze-out. The two massless inert singlinos contribute to the effective number of neutrino species at the time of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, where the precise contribution depends on the mass of the Z' which keeps them in equilibrium. For example for mZ' > 1300 GeV we find Neff \approx 3.2, where the smallness of the additional contribution is due to entropy dilution. We study a few benchmark points in the constrained E6SSM with massless inert singlinos to illustrate this new scenario.

Measurable Neutrino Mass Scale in A4 x SU(5)

We propose a supersymmetric A4 x SU(5) model of quasi-degenerate neutrinos which predicts the effective neutrino mass m_ee relevant for neutrinoless double beta decay to be proportional to the neutrino mass scale, thereby allowing its determination approximately independently of unknown Majorana phases. Such a natural quasi-degeneracy is achieved by using the A4 (as an example of a non-Abelian family symmetry with real triplet representations) to enforce a type II seesaw contribution to the neutrino mass matrix proportional to the identity. Tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing arises from a type I seesaw contribution via A4 family symmetry and constrained sequential dominance. We perform a numerical fit to the quark and lepton masses and quark mixing where a simple ansatz describing quark CP violation with alpha approximately 90 degrees also leads to the leptonic phase prediction delta_MNS approximately 90 degrees.

Vacuum misalignment corrections to tri-bimaximal mixing and form dominance

Tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing may arise from see-saw models based on family symmetry which is spontaneously broken by flavons with particular vacuum alignments. However recent analyses hint that tri-bimaximal mixing may be insensitive to the precise form of vacuum alignment. In this paper we derive approximate analytic results which express the deviations from tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing due to vacuum misalignment. We also relate vacuum misalignment to departures from form dominance, corresponding to deviations from the real orthogonal $R$ matrix, where such corrections are necessary to allow for successful leptogenesis. The analytic results show that the corrections to tri-bimaximal mixing and form dominance depend on the pattern of the vacuum misalignment, with the two effects being uncorrelated.

Z' physics with early LHC data

We discuss the prospects for setting limits on or discovering spin-1 $Z'$ bosons using early LHC data at 7 TeV. Our results are based on the narrow width approximation in which the leptonic Drell-Yan $Z'$ boson production cross-section only depends on the $Z'$ boson mass together with two parameters $c_u$ and $c_d$. We carefully discuss the experimental cuts that should be applied and tabulate the theoretical next-to-next-to-leading order corrections which must be included. Using these results the approach then provides a safe, convenient and unbiased way of comparing experiment to theoretical models which avoids any built-in model dependent assumptions. We apply the method to three classes of perturbative $Z'$ boson benchmark models: $E_6$ models, left-right symmetric models and sequential standard models. We generalise each class of model in terms of {mixing angles which continuously parametrize} linear combinations of pairs of generators and lead to distinctive orbits in the $c_u-c_d$ plane. We also apply this method to the strongly coupled four-site benchmark model in which two $Z'$ bosons are predicted. By comparing the experimental limits or discovery bands to the theoretical predictions on the $c_u$-$c_d$ plane, we show that the LHC at 7 TeV with integrated luminosity of 500 pb$^{-1}$ will greatly improve on current Tevatron mass limits for the benchmark models. If a $Z'$ is discovered our results show that measurement of the mass and cross-section will provide a powerful discriminator between the benchmark models using this approach.

A SUSY GUT of Flavour with S4 x SU(5) to NLO

We construct a Supersymmetric (SUSY) Grand Unified Theory (GUT) of Flavour based on S4 x SU(5), together with an additional (global or local) Abelian symmetry, and study it to next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy. The model includes a successful description of quark and lepton masses and mixing angles at leading order (LO) incorporating the Gatto-Sartori-Tonin (GST) relation and the Georgi-Jarlskog (GJ) relations. We study the vacuum alignment arising from F-terms to NLO and such corrections are shown to have a negligible effect on the results for fermion masses and mixings achieved at LO. Tri-bimaximal (TB) mixing in the neutrino sector is predicted very accurately up to NLO corrections of order 0.1%. Including charged lepton mixing corrections implies small deviations from TB mixing described by a precise sum rule, accurately maximal atmospheric mixing and a reactor mixing angle close to three degrees.

SUSY SU(5) with singlet plus adjoint matter and A4 family symmetry

We propose a supersymmetric (SUSY) SU(5) Grand Unified Theory (GUT) including a single right-handed neutrino singlet and an adjoint matter representation below the GUT scale and extend this model to include an A4 family symmetry and a gauged anomaly-free Abelian group. In our approach hierarchical neutrino masses result from a combined type I and type III seesaw mechanism, and the A4 symmetry leads to tri-bimaximal mixing which arises indirectly. The mixing between the single right-handed neutrino and the matter in the adjoint is forbidden by excluding an adjoint Higgs, leading to a diagonal heavy Majorana sector as required by constrained sequential dominance. The model also reproduces a realistic description of quark and charged lepton masses and quark mixings, including the Georgi-Jarlskog relations and the leptonic mixing sum rules s=r*cos(delta) and a=-r^2/4 with r=theta_C/3.

A Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theory of Flavour with PSL(2,7) x SO(10)

We construct a realistic Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theory of Flavour based on PSL(2,7) x SO(10), where the quarks and leptons in the 16 of SO(10) are assigned to the complex triplet representation of PSL(2,7), while the flavons are assigned to a combination of sextets and anti-triplets of PSL(2,7). Using a D-term vacuum alignment mechanism, we require the flavon sextets of PSL(2,7) to be aligned along the 3-3 direction leading to the third family Yukawa couplings, while the flavon anti-triplets describe the remaining Yukawa couplings. Other sextets are aligned along the neutrino flavour symmetry preserving directions leading to tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing via a type II see-saw mechanism, with predictions for neutrinoless double beta decay and cosmology.
