Quark mixing sum rules and the right unitarity triangle

In analogy with the recently proposed lepton mixing sum rules, we derive quark mixing sum rules for the case of hierarchical quark mass matrices with 1-3 texture zeros, in which the separate up and down type 1-3 mixing angles are approximately zero, and $V_{ub}$ is generated from $V_{cb}$ as a result of 1-2 up type quark mixing. Using the sum rules, we discuss the phenomenological viability of such textures, including up to four texture zeros, and show how the right-angled unitarity triangle, i.e., $α\approx 90^\circ$, can be accounted for by a remarkably simple scheme involving real mass matrices apart from a single element being purely imaginary. In the framework of grand unified theories we show how the quark and lepton mixing sum rules may combine to yield an accurate prediction for the reactor angle.

On the origin of neutrino flavour symmetry

We study classes of models which are based on some discrete family symmetry which is completely broken such that the observed neutrino flavour symmetry emerges indirectly as an accidental symmetry. For such "indirect" models we discuss the D-term flavon vacuum alignments which are required for such an accidental flavour symmetry consistent with tri-bimaximal lepton mixing to emerge. We identify large classes of suitable discrete family symmetries, namely the $Δ(3n^2)$ and $Δ(6n^2)$ groups, together with other examples such as $Z_7\rtimes Z_3$. In such indirect models the implementation of the type I see-saw mechanism is straightforward using constrained sequential dominance. However the accidental neutrino flavour symmetry may be easily violated, for example leading to a large reactor angle, while maintaining accurately the tri-bimaximal solar and atmospheric predictions.

A4 See-Saw Models and Form Dominance

We introduce the idea of Form Dominance in the (type I) see-saw mechanism, according to which a particular right-handed neutrino mass eigenstate is associated with a particular physical neutrino mass eigenstate, leading to a form diagonalizable effective neutrino mass matrix. Form Dominance, which allows an arbitrary neutrino mass spectrum, may be regarded as a generalization of Constrained Sequential Dominance which only allows strongly hierarchical neutrino masses. We consider alternative implementations of the see-saw mechanism in minimal A4 see-saw models and show that such models satisfy Form Dominance, leading to neutrino mass sum rules which predict closely spaced neutrino masses with a normal or inverted neutrino mass ordering. To avoid the partial cancellations inherent in such models we propose Natural Form Dominance, in which a different flavon is associated with each physical neutrino mass eigenstate.

Neutralino Dark Matter with Inert Higgsinos and Singlinos

We discuss neutralino dark matter arising from supersymmetric models with extra inert Higgsinos and singlinos, where inert means that their scalar partners do not get vacuum expectation values. As an example, we consider the extended neutralino sector of the E$_6$SSM, which predicts three families of Higgs doublet pairs, plus three singlets, plus a $Z'$, together with their fermionic superpartners. We show that the two families of inert doublet Higgsinos and singlinos predicted by this model provide an almost decoupled neutralino sector with a naturally light LSP which can account for the cold dark matter relic abundance independently of the rest of the model, providing that the ratio of the two usual Higgs doublets satisfies tan beta < 2.

A new family symmetry for SO(10) GUTs

We argue that the projective special linear group PSL(2,7), also known as Sigma(168), has unique features which make it the most suitable discrete family symmetry for describing quark and lepton masses and mixing in the framework of SO(10) type unified models. In such models flavon fields in the sextet representation of PSL(2,7) play a crucial role both in obtaining tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing as well as in generating the third family charged fermion Yukawa couplings. In preparation for physical applications, we derive the triplet representation of PSL(2,7) in the basis S,T,U,V where S,T,U are the familiar triplet generators of S(4) in the diagonal charged lepton basis where T is diagonal. We also derive an analogous basis for the real sextet representation and identify the vacuum alignments which lead to tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing and large third family charged fermion Yukawa couplings.

Perturbative Estimates of Lepton Mixing Angles in Unified Models

Many unified models predict two large neutrino mixing angles, with the charged lepton mixing angles being small and quark-like, and the neutrino masses being hierarchical. Assuming this, we present simple approximate analytic formulae giving the lepton mixing angles in terms of the underlying high energy neutrino mixing angles together with small perturbations due to both charged lepton corrections and renormalisation group (RG) effects, including also the effects of third family canonical normalization (CN). We apply the perturbative formulae to the ubiquitous case of tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing at the unification scale, in order to predict the theoretical corrections to mixing angle predictions and sum rule relations, and give a general discussion of all limiting cases.

Solving the SUSY Flavour and CP Problems with Non-Abelian Family Symmetry and Supergravity

Can a theory of flavour capable of describing the spectrum of fermion (including neutrino) masses and mixings also contain within it the seeds for a solution of the SUSY flavour and CP problems? We argue that supergravity together with a non-Abelian family symmetry can completely resolve the SUSY flavour and CP problems in a broad class of theories in which family symmetry and CP is spontaneously broken in the flavon sector. We show that a simple superpotential structure can suppresses the F-terms of the flavons and GUT scale Higgs fields and that, if this mechanism is implemented, the resulting flavour and CP violation is suppressed and comfortably within the experimental limits. For illustration, we study a specific model based on SU(3) family symmetry, but similar models based on non-Abelian (continuous or discrete) family symmetry will lead to similar results.

Solving the SUSY Flavour and CP Problems with SU(3) Family Symmetry

We show how the SUSY flavour and CP problems can be solved using gauged SU(3) family symmetry previously introduced to describe quark and lepton masses and mixings, in particular neutrino tri-bimaximal mixing via constrained sequential dominance. The Yukawa and soft trilinear and scalar mass squared matrices and kinetic terms are expanded in powers of the flavons used to spontaneously break the SU(3) family symmetry, and the canonically normalized versions of these matrices are constructed. The soft mass matrices are then expressed in the Super-CKM basis, and the leading order mass insertion parameters are calculated, and are shown to satisfy the experimental constraints from flavour changing neutral current processes. Assuming that CP is spontaneously broken by the flavons, the next-to-leading order effects responsible for CP violation are then estimated, and the predictions for electric dipole moments are shown to be an order of magnitude more suppressed than those predicted from the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM), and may be further suppressed if the high energy trilinear soft parameter is assumed to be relatively small. We also predict that, unlike in the CMSSM, epsilon_K'/epsilon_K may be dominated by the SUSY operator O_8. We also discuss the additional constraints from unification, which can lead to further predictions for flavour changing in our scheme.

Third Family Corrections to Quark and Lepton Mixing in SUSY Models with non-Abelian Family Symmetry

We re-analyse the effect of corrections from canonical normalisation of kinetic terms on the quark and lepton mixing angles. This type of corrections emerges, for example, from effective higher-dimensional Kahler potential operators in the context of locally supersymmetric models of flavour. In contrast to previous studies we find that the necessary procedure of redefining the fields in order to restore canonically normalised kinetic terms, i.e. canonical normalisation, can lead to significant corrections to the fermion mixing angles (as determined from the superpotential). Such potentially large effects are characteristic of flavour models based on non-Abelian family symmetries, where some of the possible Kahler potential (and superpotential) operators, in particular those associated with the third family, are only mildly suppressed. We investigate under which conditions the messenger sector of such flavour models generates such Kahler potential operators for which the canonical normalisation effects are sizeable, and under which conditions these operators may be absent and canonical normalisation effects are small. As explicit examples for potentially relevant CN effects, we will discuss the corrections to the CKM matrix element |V_{cb}| as well as corrections to tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing.

Third Family Corrections to Tri-bimaximal Lepton Mixing and a New Sum Rule

We investigate the theoretical stability of the predictions of tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing with respect to third family wave-function corrections. Such third family wave-function corrections can arise from either the canonical normalisation of the kinetic terms or renormalisation group running effects. At leading order both sorts of corrections can be subsumed into a single universal parameter. For hierarchical neutrinos, this leads to a new testable lepton mixing sum rule 's = r cos delta + 2/3 a' (where s, r, a describe the deviations of solar, reactor and atmospheric mixing angles from their tri-bimaximal values, and 'delta' is the observable Dirac CP phase) which is stable under all leading order third family wave-function corrections, as well as Cabibbo-like charged lepton mixing effects.

Flavour from accidental symmetries

We consider a new approach to fermion masses and mixings in which no special "horizontal" dynamics is invoked to account for the hierarchical pattern of charged fermion masses and for the peculiar features of neutrino masses. The hierarchy follows from the vertical, family-independent structure of the model, in particular from the breaking pattern of the Pati-Salam group. The lightness of the first two fermion families can be related to two family symmetries emerging in this context as accidental symmetries.

A4 family symmetry and quark-lepton unification

We present a model of quark and lepton masses and mixings based on A4 family symmetry, a discrete subgroup of an SO(3) flavour symmetry, together with Pati-Salam unification. It accommodates tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing via constrained sequential dominance with a particularly simple vacuum alignment mechanism emerging through the effective D-term contributions to the scalar potential.

Towards a Complete Theory of Fermion Masses and Mixings with SO(3) Family Symmetry and 5d SO(10) Unification

We construct a complete 4d model of fermion masses and mixings in the Pati-Salam SU(4) x SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R framework governed by an SO(3) gauged Family Symmetry. The relevant low energy effective Yukawa operators are constructed so that the SO(3) flavons enter at the simplest possible one-flavon level, with couplings enforced by an additional U(1) x Z_2 symmetry. The simplicity of the flavon sector allows the messenger sector to be fully specified, allowing the ultraviolet completion of the model at the 4d renormalizable level. The model predicts approximate tri-bimaximal lepton mixing via the see-saw mechanism with sequential dominance, and vacuum alignment of flavons, with calculable deviations described by the neutrino sum rule. We perform a numerical analysis of the emerging charged fermion spectra and mixings. The 4d model is shown to result from a 5d orbifold GUT model based on SO(3) x SO(10), where small flavon vacuum expectation values originate from bulk volume suppression.

Radiative Corrections to Chargino Production in Electron-Positron Collisions with Polarised Beams

We study radiative corrections to chargino production at linear colliders with polarised electron beams. We calculate the one-loop corrected cross-sections for polarised electon beams due to three families of quarks and squarks, working in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme, extending our previous calculation of the unpolarised cross-section with one-loop corrections due to the third family of quarks and squarks. In some cases we find rather large corrections to the tree-level cross-sections. For example for the case of right-handed polarised electrons and large $\tan β$ the corrections can be of order 30%, allowing sensitivity to the squark mass parameters.

Low Scale Technicolour at LEP

We discuss the phenomenology of an $SU(2)_{TC}$ technicolour model with a low technicolour confinement scale $Λ_{TC} \sim 50-100 GeV$. Such a low technicolour scale may give rise to the first hints of technicolour being seen at LEPI and spectacular technicolour signals at LEPII.
