Exploring the heavy quark sector of the Bestest Little Higgs model at the LHC

We present discovery limits for heavy quarks in the Bestest Little Higgs model via pair production at the LHC running at $\sqrt{s} = 7 \mathrm{TeV}$. We study pair produced heavy top-like quarks decaying to $b\bar{b}W^+W^-$ and $t\bar{t}ZZ$ final states and singly produced heavy top-like quarks via t-channel $W$ exchange. These results are compared to currently available limits on heavy top-like quark cross sections from CMS (with 1.14 fb$^{-1}$ integrated luminosity) for two scenarios of Yukawa couplings. We find that the CMS data limits the mass of the lightest top partner to larger than 413 GeV in the first scenario, where the two lightest top-partners have a small mass splitting, and 364 GeV in the second scenario, where the mass splitting between the two lightest top-partners is larger.

Unravelling an Extra Neutral Gauge Boson at the LHC using Third Generation Fermions

We study the potential to use measurements of extra neutral gauge bosons (Z') properties in pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider to unravel the underlying physics. We focus on the usefulness of third generation final states (tau, b, t) in distinguishing between models with non-universal Z'-fermion couplings. We present an update of discovery limits of Z's including the 2010-2011 LHC run and include models with non-universal couplings. We show how ratios of sigma(pp -> Z' -> ttbar), sigma(pp -> Z' -> bbbar), and sigma(pp -> Z' -> tau^+tau^-) to sigma(pp -> Z' -> mu^+mu^-) can be used to distinguish between models and measure parameters of the models. Of specific interest are models with preferential couplings, such as models with generation dependent couplings. We also find that forward-backward asymmetry measurements with third generation fermions in the final state could provide important input to understanding the nature of the Z'. Understanding detector resolution and efficiencies will be crucial for extracting results.

Exploring Higgs Triplet Models via Vector Boson Scattering at the LHC

We present the results of a study of Higgs triplet boson production arising in the Littlest Higgs, Left-Right Symmetric, and Georgi-Machacek models in the W^\pm W^\pm, W^\pm Z, W^+ W^-, and Z Z channels at the LHC. We focus on the "gold-plated" purely leptonic decay modes and consider the irreducible electroweak, QCD, and t-quark backgrounds, applying a combination of forward-jet-tagging, central-jet-vetoing, and stringent leptonic cuts to suppress the backgrounds. We find that, given the constraints on the triplet vacuum expectation value (vev), considerable luminosity is required to observe Higgs triplet bosons in vector boson scattering. Observing a Higgs triplet at the LHC is most promising in the Georgi-Machacek model due to a weaker constraint on the triplet vev. In this model, we find that a Higgs triplet boson with a mass of 1.0 (1.5) TeV can be observed at the LHC with an integrated luminosity as low as 41 (119) fb^{-1} in the W^\pm W^\pm channel and as low as 171 (474) fb^{-1} in the W^\pm Z channel. Observation of Higgs triplet bosons in these channels would help identify the underlying theory.

Topics in Hadron Spectroscopy in 2009

There have been numerous developments in hadron spectroscopy over the past year. In this brief review I focus on two general areas. In the first I give an update on hadrons with b-quarks. Their properties are in textbook agreement with QCD motivated constituent quark models. The second topic is the Charmonium-like $XYZ$ states above open charm threshold that continue to be discovered. Many of these do not seem to be described as conventional c\bar{c} states and may be hadronic molecules, Tetraquarks, or Charmonium Hybrids. The first topic is an example of how well we seem to understand hadrons while the second case reminds us of how much we still have to learn.

Discovery and Identification of Extra Neutral Gauge Bosons at the LHC

We present the discovery prospects for a Z' resonance and some expected results for Z' diagnostic measurements at the LHC. The discovery reach is highly dependent on the energy and luminosities that may be attained at the LHC, and a number of energy and integrated luminosity scenarios are presented. In addition, the use of third generation quark final states for distinguishing between models and for measuring a forward-backward asymmetry is explored.

Using Final State Pseudorapidities to Improve s-channel Resonance Observables at the LHC

We study the use of final state particle pseudorapidity for measurements of s-channel resonances at the LHC. Distinguishing the spin of an s-channel resonance can, in principle, be accomplished using angular distributions in the centre-of-mass frame, possibly using a centre-edge asymmetry measurement, A_CE. In addition, forward-backward asymmetry measurements, A_FB, can be used to distinguish between models of extra neutral gauge bosons. In this note we show how these measurements can be improved by using simple methods based on the pseudorapidity of the final state particles and present the expected results for A_FB and A_CE for several representative models.

Identification of Extra Neutral Gauge Bosons at the LHC Using b- and t-Quarks

New Neutral Gauge Bosons, Z' 's, are predicted by many models of physics beyond the Standard Electroweak Theory. It is possible that a Z' would be discovered early in the Large Hadron Collider program. The next step would be to measure its properties to identify the underlying theory that gave rise to the Z'. Heavy quarks have the unique property that they can be identified in the final states. In this letter we demonstrate that measuring Z' decays to b- and t-quark final states can act as an effective means of discriminating between models with extra gauge bosons.

Quarkonia and their transitions

Valuable data on quarkonia (the bound states of a heavy quark Q=c,b and the corresponding antiquark) have recently been provided by a variety of sources, mainly e+ e- collisions, but also hadronic interactions. This permits a thorough updating of the experimental and theoretical status of electromagnetic and strong transitions in quarkonia. We discuss QQbar transitions to other QQbar states, with some reference to processes involving QQbar annihilation.

The Exotic XYZ Charmonium-like Mesons

Charmonium, the spectroscopy of c\bar{c} mesons, has recently enjoyed a renaissance with the discovery of several missing states and a number of unexpected charmonium-like resonances. The discovery of these new states has been made possible by the extremely large data samples made available by the B-factories at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and at KEK in Japan, and at the CESR e^+e^- collider at Cornell. Conventional c\bar{c} states are well described by quark potential models. However, many of these newly discovered charmonium-like mesons do not seem to fit into the conventional c\bar{c} spectrum. There is growing evidence that at least some of these new states are exotic, i.e. new forms of hadronic matter such as mesonic-molecules, tetraquarks, and/or hybrid mesons. In this review we describe expectations for the properties of conventional charmonium states and the predictions for molecules, tetraquarks and hybrids and the various processes that can be used to produce them. We examine the evidence for the new candidate exotic mesons, possible explanations, and experimental measurements that might shed further light on the nature these states.

The XYZ's of c\bar{c}: Hints of Exotic New Mesons

I discuss the nature of the new charm and charmonium like states observed in the last few years and measurements that can test these assignments. In particular it appears that the X(3943) is the eta_c''(3^1S_0) which can be tested by looking for it in gamma gamma to D\bar{D}^*, the Y(3943) is the chi_{c1}'(2^3P_1) which can be tested by looking for it in D\bar{D} and D\bar{D}^*, the Z(3930) is the chi_{c2}'(2^3P_2) which can be confirmed by looking for it in D\bar{D}^*. If the X(3872) is confirmed to have J^{PC}=1^{++} it is almost certainly a multiquark state while if its J^{PC} is found to be 2^{-+} is is likely the 1^1D_2 state. The Y(4260) appears to be an extra 1^{--} which is most easily explained as a charmonium hybrid. This can be tested by looking the DD_1 final state.

Study of V_LV_L\to t\bar{t} at the ILC Including O(alpha_s) QCD Corrections

In the event that the Higgs mass is large or that the electroweak interactions are strongly interacting at high energy, top quark couplings to longitudinal components of the weak gauge bosons could offer important clues to the underlying dynamics. It has been suggested that precision measurements of W_L W_L \to t\bar{t} and Z_L Z_L \to t\bar{t} might provide hints of new physics. In this paper we present results for O(alpha_s) QCD corrections to V_LV_L\to t\bar{t} scattering at the ILC. We find that corrections to cross sections can be as large as 30% and must be accounted for in any precision measurement of VV\to t\bar{t}.

Distinguishing Between Models with Extra Gauge Bosons at the ILC

Extra neutral gauge bosons arise in many extensions of the Standard Model. If one were to be discovered it would be necessary to measure its properties so that we could understand its origins. In this report we find that Z' couplings can be measured at the ILC precisely enough to distinguish between models up to a Z' mass of 2-3 TeV. An important ingredient in these measurements is polarization of the e^- and to a lesser extent e^+ beams. b and c-quark tagging would also give important additional information.

Properties of the Charmed P-wave Mesons

Two broad charmed mesons, the D_0^* and D_1', have recently been observed. We examine the quark model predictions for the D_0^* and D_1' properties and discuss experimental measurements that can shed light on them. We find that these states are well described as the broad, j=1/2 non-strange charmed P-wave mesons. Understanding the D_0^* and D_1' states can provide important insights into the D_{sJ}^*(2317), D_{sJ}(2460) states whose unexpected properties have led to renewed interest in hadron spectroscopy.

New Physics at the TeV Scale and Precision Electroweak Studies

In this summary we review some recent developments in New Physics at the TeV scale. We concentrate on measurements at the ILC that can distinguish between some of the models that have recently been discussed, concentrating on results presented at this workshop: The Little Higgs Model, models of Large Extra Dimensions; Randall-Sundrum (RS), Arkani-Hamed Dimopoulos Dvali (ADD), and Universal Extra Dimensions (UED). Some recent results on constraining effective Lagrangian parametrizations of new physics are also presented.

Towards an Understanding of the New Charm and Charm-Strange Mesons

The observation of the D_{sJ}^*(2317), D_{sJ}(2460), and SELEX D^*_{sJ}(2632) states with properties differing considerably from what was expected has led to a renewed interest in hadron spectroscopy. In addition to these states, non-strange partners of the D_{sJ} states have also been observed. Understanding the D_0^* and D_1' states can provide important insights into the D_{sJ} states. In this contribution I examine quark model predictions for the D_0^* and D_1' states and discuss experimental measurements that can shed light on them. I find that these states are well described as the broad, j=1/2 non-strange charmed P-wave mesons. In the latter part of this writeup I discuss the c bar{s} possibilities for the SELEX D^*_{sJ}(2632) and measurements that can shed light on it.

The Sterile Neutrino: First Hint of 4th Generation Fermions?

In this letter, we introduce the ``flipped see-saw mechanism'', a new type of see-saw mechanism with 4th-generation neutrinos. This mechanism naturally explains the light sterile neutrino which is needed to account for all neutrino oscillation data. At the same time it predicts that another Majorona neutrino should exist with mass of the electro-weak scale. We comment on some implications of this scenario on the oblique parameters used to parameterize precision electroweak measurements as well as on future experiments.
