Recent progress on Higgs physics at a $γγ$ collider

We review some recent developments in Higgs physics at a $γγ$ collider. We begin with single Higgs boson production in $γγ$ collisions proceeding via the hadronic content of the photon. For SM Higgs masses of current theoretical interest, the resolved photon contributions are non-negligible in precision cross section measurements. We found that production of the heavier Higgs bosons, $H^0$ and $A^0$, of the MSSM can probe regions of the SUSY parameter space that will complement other measurements. We showed that associated $t H^\pm$ production in $γγ$ collisions can be used to make an accurate determination of $\tanβ$ for low and high $\tanβ$ by precision measurements of the $γγ\to H^\pm t +X $ cross section. We then reviewed recent progress on Higgs physics in direct photon processes in which the Higgs bosons are produced via virtual loops. Precision measurements of the magnitude and phase of the $Hγγ$ coupling at a photon collider can be used to determine Higgs parameters related to physics beyond the SM.

P-Wave Charm Mesons as a Window to the D_{sJ} States

In my talk I discussed the properties of the newly discovered D_{sJ}^*(2317), D_{sJ}(2460), X(3872), and SELEX D^*_{sJ}(2632) states and suggested experimental measurements that can shed light on them. In this writeup I concentrate on an important facet of understanding the D_{sJ} states, the properties of the closely related D_0^* and D_1' states. These states are well described as the broad, j=1/2 non-strange charmed P-wave mesons.

Higgs Boson Production in gamma-gamma Collisions via Resolved Photon Contributions

We studied single Higgs boson production in $γγ$ collisions proceeding via the hadronic content of the photon. We found that production of the heavier Higgs bosons H^0 and A^0 of the MSSM can probe regions of the SUSY parameter space that will complement other measurements. Spectroscopy of B_c Mesons in the Relativized Quark Model

We calculate the spectrum of the charm-beauty mesons using the relativized quark model. Using the wavefunctions from this model we compute the radiative widths of excited c\bar{b} states. The hadronic transition rates between c\bar{b} states are estimated using the Kuang-Yan approach and are combined with the radiative widths to give estimates of the relative branching ratios. These results are combined with production rates at the Tevatron and the LHC to suggest promising signals for excited B_c states. Our results are compared with other models to gauge the reliability of the predictions and point out differences.

Measurement of tan beta in associated t H^\pm Production in gamma gamma Collisions

The ratio of neutral Higgs field vacuum expectation values, tan beta, is one of the most important parameters to determine in type-II Two-Higgs Doublet Models (2HDM), specifically the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). Assuming the energies and integrated luminosity of a future high energy e^+e^- linear collider of sqrt{s}=500, 800, 1000, and 1500 GeV and L=1 ab^{-1} we show that associated t H^+/- production in gamma gamma collisions can be used to make an accurate determination of tan beta for low and high tan beta by precision measurements of the gamma gamma -> H^+/- t + X cross section.

Testing the Nature of the D_{sJ}^*(2317)^+ and D_{sJ}(2463)^+ States Using Radiative Transitions

The Babar and CLEO collaborations have recently observed states decaying to D_s^+π^0 and D_s^{*+}π^0 respectively and suggest the possible explanation that they are the missing P-wave c\bar{s} states with J^P=0^+ and 1^+. In this note we compare the properties of the D_{sJ}^*(2317)^+ and D_{sJ}(2463)^+ states to those expected of the c\bar{s} D_{s0}^* and D_{s1} states. We expect the D_{s0}^* and D_{s1} with the reported masses to be extremely narrow, Γ\sim {\cal O}(10\hbox{keV}), with large branching ratios to D^*_sγfor the D_{s0}^* and to D^*_sγand D_sγfor the D_{s1}. Crucial to this interpretation of the Babar and CLEO observations is the measurement of the radiative transitions. We note that it may be possible to observe the $D_{s1}(2536)$ in radiative transitions to the $D_s^*$.

Resolved Photon Contributions to Higgs Boson Production in gamma gamma Collisions

We study single Higgs boson production in gamma gamma collisions proceeding via the hadronic content of the photon. These processes complement previous studies of pair and single Higgs production at e^+e^- colliders. For SM Higgs masses of current theoretical interest, the resolved photon contributions are non-negligible in precision cross section measurements. The charged Higgs cross sections are not competitive with the gamma gamma -> H^+ H^- process and at best might offer some information about quark-Higgs couplings. Finally, resolved photon production of the heavier Higgs bosons, H^0 and A^0 of the MSSM, can probe regions of the SUSY parameter space that will complement other measurements. This last process shows some promise in SUSY Higgs searches and warrants further study.

The Phenomenology of Glueball and Hybrid Mesons

The existence of non-q\bar{q} hadrons such as glueballs and hybrids is one of the most important qualitative questions in QCD. The COMPASS experiment offers the possibility to unambiguously identify such states and map out the glueball and hybrid spectrum. In this review I discuss the expected properties of glueballs and hybrids and how they might be produced and studied by the COMPASS collaboration.

Phenomenology of Non-Commutative Field Theories

We study the effects of non-commutative QED (NCQED) in fermion pair production, gamma + gamma to f + \bar{f} and Compton scattering, e + gamma to e + gamma. Non-commutative geometries give rise to 3- and 4-point photon vertices and to momentum dependent phase factors in QED vertices which will have observable effects in high energy collisions. We consider e^+ e^- colliders with energies appropriate to the TeV Linear Collider proposals and the multi-TeV CLIC project operating in gamma gamma and e gamma modes. Non-commutative scales roughly equal to the center of mass energy of the e^+e^- collider can be probed, with the exact value depending on the model parameters and experimental factors. The Compton process is sensitive to Lambda_{NC} values roughly twice as large as those accessible to the pair production process.

Topics in Meson Spectroscopy

In this mini-review I discuss three topics in meson spectroscopy. The production of heavy quarkonium states, S-wave scattering below 1 GeV, and exotic hybrid meson production. This is not intended to be a comprehensive review, just an overview of several topics of current interest.

Production of Missing c\bar{c} and b\bar{b} States

The heavy quarkonium c\bar{c} and b\bar{b} resonances have a rich spectroscopy with numerous narrow S, P, and D-wave levels below the production threshold of open charm and beauty mesons. The mass predictions for these states are an important test of QCD calculations. We review some recent work describing the production of missing η_b(nS), 1^3D_J(b\bar{b}) and 1^1P_1(c\bar{c}) and 1^1P_1(b\bar{b}) states.

Discovery Potential for Doubly Charged Higgs Bosons in e^+e^- Collisions at LEP

We study the discovery limits for doubly charged Higgs bosons, Delta^{--}, obtainable at the LEP e^+e^- collider. We expect that the LEP2 collaborations can rule out the existence of a doubly charged Higgs boson of mass below about 190 GeV for Yukawa couplings greater than 0.1. However, even for larger values of M_Delta, evidence for the Delta can be seen due to contributions from virtual intermediate Delta's provided they have relatively large values of the Yukawa couplings.

Production of singlet P-wave $c \bar c$ and $b \bar b$ states

No spin-singlet $b \bar b$ quarkonium state has yet been observed. In this paper we discuss the production of the singlet P-wave $b\bar{b}$ and $c\bar{c}$ $^1P_1$ states $h_b$ and $h_c$. We consider two possibilities. In the first the $^1P_1$ states are produced via the electromagnetic cascades $\ups(3S) \to η_b(2S) + γ\to h_b + γγ\to η_b +γγγ$ and $ψ'\to η_c' + γ\to h_c + γγ\to η_c + γγγ$. A more promising process consists of single pion transition to the $^1P_1$ state followed by the radiative transition to the $1^1S_0$ state: $\ups(3S)\to h_b + π^0 \to η_b + π^0 +γ$ and $ψ' \to h_c + π^0 \to η_c + π^0 +γ$. For a million $\ups(3S)$ or $ψ'$'s produced we expect these processes to produce several hundred events.

Extended Gauge Sectors at Multi-TeV e^+e^- Colliders

We give a brief overview of searches at TeV e^+e^- colliders for new particles that arise in models with extended gauge sectors. We concentrate on some recent developments in $W'$ searches and on leptoquark searches. We also briefly mention $Z'$ searches.

Update of Discovery Limits for Extra Neutral Gauge Bosons at Hadron Colliders

We study and compare the discovery potential for heavy neutral gauge bosons (Z') at the various hadron colliders under discussion at Snowmass 2001 which range in sqrt{s} from 14 TeV for the LHC to 200 TeV for a variant of the VLHC. Typical search limits for pp colliders are ~0.25-0.30 times sqrt{s} assuming 100 fb^{-1} to 1 ab^{-1} of integrated luminosity with some variation due to differences of fermion couplings in the different models. Discovery limits at the Tevatron are ~1 TeV for 15 fb^{-1}, approximately 30--50% higher than this rough guideline, due to the higher q\bar{q} luminosities in the p\bar{p} beams.

Signals for Non-Commutative QED in $e γ$ and $γγ$ Collisions

We study the effects of non-commutative QED (NCQED) in fermion pair production, $γ+ γ\to f + \bar{f}$ and Compton scattering, $e + γ\to e + γ$. Non-commutative geometries appear naturally in the context of string/M-theory and gives rise to 3- and 4-point photon vertices and to momentum dependent phase factors in QED vertices which will have observable effects in high energy collisions. We consider $e^+ e^-$ colliders with energies appropriate to the TeV Linear Collider proposals and the multi-TeV CLIC project operating in $γγ$ and $eγ$ modes. Non-commutative scales roughly equal to the center of mass energy of the $e^+e^-$ collider can be probed, with the exact value depending on the model parameters and experimental factors. However, we found that the Compton process is sensitive to $Λ_{NC}$ values roughly twice as large as those accessible to the pair production process.

Production of the $η_b(nS)$ states

The rates for magnetic dipole (M1) transitions $Υ(nS) \to η_b(n'S) + γ$, $n' \le n$, are compared. The photon energies for allowed ($n' = n$) M1 transitions are very small, so hindered ($n' < n$) transitions could be more favorable for discovering the $η_b(1S,2S)$. The question then arises whether $Υ(2S)$ or $Υ(3S)$ is a better source of $η_b(1S)$. Whereas one nonrelativistic model favors $η_b(1S)$ production from $Υ(2S)$, this advantage is lost when relativistic corrections are taken into account, and is not common to all sets of wave functions even in the purely nonrelativistic limit. Thus, the prospects for discovering $η_b(1S)$ in $Υ(3S)$ radiative decays could be comparable to those in $Υ(2S)$ decays. We also discuss a suggestion for discovering the $η_b$ via $Υ(3S) \to h_b(^1P_1) ππ$, followed by $h_b \to η_b γ$.

Signatures of Doubly Charged Higgs Bosons in e gamma Collisions

We study the discovery potential for doubly charged Higgs bosons, Delta^--, in the process e- gamma -> e+ mu- mu- for centre of mass energies appropriate to high energy e^+e^- linear colliders and the CLIC proposal. For M_Delta < sqrt{s}_{e gamma} discovery is likely for even relatively small values of the Yukawa coupling to leptons. However, even far above threshold, evidence for the Delta can be seen due to contributions from virtual intermediate Delta's although, in this case, mu- mu- final states can only be produced in sufficient numbers for discovery for relatively large values of the Yukawa couplings.
