Worldline theories with towers of internal states

We study particle theories that have a tower of worldline internal degrees of freedom. Such a theory can arise when the worldsheet of closed strings is dimensionally reduced to a worldline, in which case the tower is infinite with regularly spaced masses. But our discussion is significantly more general than this, and there is scope to consider all kinds of internal degrees of freedom carried by the propagating particle. For example it is possible to consider towers corresponding to other geometries, or towers with no obvious geometric interpretation that still yield a modular invariant theory. Truncated towers generate non-local particle theories that share with string theory the property of having a Gross-Mende-like saddle point in their amplitudes. This provides a novel framework for constructing exotic theories which may have desirable properties such as finiteness and modular invariance.

Observing the fate of the false vacuum with a quantum laboratory

We design and implement a quantum laboratory to experimentally observe and study dynamical processes of quantum field theories. Our approach encodes the field theory as an Ising model, which is then solved by a quantum annealer. As a proof-of-concept, we encode a scalar field theory and measure the probability for it to tunnel from the false to the true vacuum for various tunnelling times, vacuum displacements and potential profiles. The results are in accord with those predicted theoretically, showing that a quantum annealer is a genuine quantum system that can be used as a quantum laboratory. This is the first time it has been possible to experimentally measure instanton processes in a freely chosen quantum field theory. This novel and flexible method to study the dynamics of quantum systems can be applied to any field theory of interest. Experimental measurements of the dynamical behaviour of field theories are independent of theoretical calculations and can be used to infer their properties without being limited by the availability of suitable perturbative or nonperturbative computational methods. In the near future, measurements in such a quantum laboratory could therefore be used to improve theoretical and computational methods conceptually and may enable the measurement and detailed study of previously unobserved quantum phenomena.

A Systematic Approach to Kähler Moduli Stabilisation

Achieving full moduli stabilisation in type IIB string compactifications for generic Calabi-Yau threefolds with hundreds of Kähler moduli is notoriously hard. This is due not just to the very fast increase of the computational complexity with the number of moduli, but also to the fact that the scalar potential depends in general on the supergravity variables only implicitly. In fact, the supergravity chiral coordinates are 4-cycle volume moduli but the Kähler potential is an explicit function of the 2-cycle moduli and inverting between these two variables is in general impossible. In this paper we propose a general method to fix all type IIB Kähler moduli in a systematic way by working directly in terms of 2-cycle moduli: on one side we present a `master formula' for the scalar potential which can depend on an arbitrary number of Kähler moduli, while on the other we perform a computer-based search for critical points, introducing a hybrid Genetic/Clustering/Amoeba algorithm and other computational techniques. This allows us to reproduce several known minima, but also to discover new examples of both KKLT and LVS models, together with novel classes of LVS minima without diagonal del Pezzo divisors and hybrid vacua which share some features with KKLT and other with LVS solutions.

Quantum Computing for Quantum Tunnelling

We demonstrate how quantum field theory problems can be embedded on quantum annealers. The general method we use is a discretisation of the field theory problem into a general Ising model, with the continuous field values being encoded into Ising spin chains. To illustrate the method, and as a simple proof of principle, we use a (hybrid) quantum annealer to recover the correct profile of the thin-wall tunnelling solution. This method is applicable to many nonperturbative problems.

Nonlocal gravity with worldline inversion symmetry

We construct a quadratic curvature theory of gravity whose graviton propagator around the Minkowski background respects wordline inversion symmetry, the particle approximation to modular invariance in string theory. This symmetry automatically yields a corresponding gravitational theory that is nonlocal, with the action containing infinite order differential operators. As a consequence, despite being a higher order derivative theory, it is ghost-free and has no degrees of freedom besides the massless spin-$2$ graviton of Einstein's general relativity. By working in the linearised regime we show that the point-like singularities that afflict the (local) Einstein's theory are smeared out.

BPS solutions for generalised Wess-Zumino models and their applications

We present BPS solutions to a general class of Wess-Zumino models which extend previous results in the literature. We discuss their relation to amplitudes on threshold, and their application to scalar domain walls in Supersymmetric QCD. We also find partial expressions for Wess-Zumino models with softly broken supersymmetry.

Stability and vacuum energy in open string models with broken supersymmetry

We construct type I string models with supersymmetry broken by compactification that are non-tachyonic and have exponentially small effective potential at one-loop. All open string moduli can be stabilized, while the closed string moduli remain massless at one-loop. The backgrounds of interest have rigid Wilson lines by the use of stacked branes, and some models should have heterotic duals. We also present non-tachyonic backgrounds with positive potentials of runaway type at one-loop. This class of models could be used to test various swampland conjectures.

UV Completion on the Worldline

A framework for UV completing particle theories is proposed, based on the worldline formalism, which is equivalent to weighting all sums over histories with a proper-time dependent measure that has a smallest proper-time. We deduce a criterion to avoid ghosts, and find that the ghost-free theories have the (string-theory inspired) infinite-derivative model of Siegel as a special case, but represent a significant generalisation. Generically, the UV of such theories is dominated by a saddle-point in the proper-time, leading to simplification in the computation of amplitudes. We focus on a particularly attractive option which is to mimic the regulating properties of modular invariance with a worldline "inversion symmetry".

Dual RG flows in 4D

We present a prescription for using the a central charge to determine the flow of a strongly coupled supersymmetric theory from its weakly coupled dual. The approach is based on the equivalence of the scale-dependent a-parameter derived from the four-dilaton amplitude with the a-parameter determined from the Lagrange multiplier method with scale-dependent R-charges. We explicitly demonstrate this equivalence for massive free N=1 superfields and for weakly coupled SQCD.

A complete asymptotically safe embedding of the Standard Model

We present and discuss the "Tetrad Model", a large colour/flavour embedding of the Standard model which has an interacting ultraviolet fixed point. It is shown that its extended-Pati-Salam symmetry is broken radiatively via the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, while the remaining electroweak symmetry is broken when mass-squared terms run negative. In the IR the theory yields just the Standard Model, augmented by the fact that the Higgs fields carry the same generation indices as the matter fields. It is also shown that the Higgs mass-squareds develop a hierarchical structure in the IR, from a UV theory that is asymptotically flavour symmetric, opening up an interesting direction for explaining the emergence of the observed flavour structure.

The Power of Genetic Algorithms: what remains of the pMSSM?

Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are explored as a tool for probing new physics with high dimensionality. We study the 19-dimensional pMSSM, including experimental constraints from all sources and assessing the consistency of potential signals of new physics. We show that GAs excel at making a fast and accurate diagnosis of the cross-compatibility of a set of experimental constraints in such high dimensional models. In the case of the pMSSM, it is found that only ${\cal O}(10^4)$ model evaluations are required to obtain a best fit point in agreement with much more costly MCMC scans. This efficiency allows higher dimensional models to be falsified, and patterns in the spectrum identified, orders of magnitude more quickly. As examples of falsification, we consider the muon anomalous magnetic moment, and the Galactic Centre gamma-ray excess observed by Fermi-LAT, which could in principle be explained in terms of neutralino dark matter. We show that both observables cannot be explained within the pMSSM, and that they provide the leading contribution to the total goodness of the fit, with $χ^2_{δa_μ^{\mathrm{SUSY}}}\approx12$ and $χ^2_{\rm GCE}\approx 155$, respectively.

GUT Precursors and Entwined SUSY: The Phenomenology of Stable Non-Supersymmetric Strings

Recent work has established a method of constructing non-supersymmetric string models that are stable, with near-vanishing one-loop dilaton tadpoles and cosmological constants. This opens up the tantalizing possibility of realizing stable string models whose low-energy limits directly resemble the Standard Model rather than one of its supersymmetric extensions. In this paper we consider the general structure of such strings and find that they share two important phenomenological properties. The first is a so-called "GUT-precursor" structure in which new GUT-like states appear with masses that can be many orders of magnitude lighter than the scale of gauge coupling unification. These states allow a parametrically large compactification volume, even in weakly coupled heterotic strings, and in certain regions of parameter space can give rise to dramatic collider signatures which serve as "smoking guns" for this overall string framework. The second is a residual "entwined-SUSY" (or e-SUSY) structure for the matter multiplets in which different multiplet components carry different horizontal $U(1)$ charges. As a concrete example and existence proof of these features, we present a heterotic string model that contains the fundamental building blocks of the Standard Model such as the Standard-Model gauge group, complete chiral generations, and Higgs fields --- all without supersymmetry. Even though massless gravitinos and gauginos are absent from the spectrum, we confirm that this model has an exponentially suppressed one-loop dilaton tadpole and displays both the GUT-precursor and e-SUSY structures. We also discuss some general phenomenological properties of e-SUSY, such as cancellations in radiative corrections to scalar masses, the possible existence of a corresponding approximate moduli space, and the prevention of rapid proton decay.

On exponential suppression of the cosmological constant in non-SUSY strings at two loops and beyond

Two independent criteria are presented that together guarantee exponential suppression of the two-loop cosmological constant in non-supersymmetric heterotic strings. They are derived by performing calculations in both the full string theory and in its underlying effective field theory, and come respectively from contributions that involve only physical untwisted states, and contributions that include orbifold twisted states. The criteria depend purely on the spectrum and charges, so a model that satisfies them will do so with no fine-tuning. An additional consistency condition (emerging from the so-called separating degeneration limit of the two-loop diagram) is that the one-loop cosmological constant must also be suppressed, by Bose-Fermi degeneracy in the massless spectrum. We remark that theories of this kind, that have continued exponential suppression to higher orders, can form the basis for a string implementation of the "naturalness without supersymmetry" idea.

Framework for an asymptotically safe Standard Model via dynamical breaking

We present a consistent embedding of the matter and gauge content of the Standard Model into an underlying asymptotically-safe theory, that has a well-determined in- teracting UV fixed point in the large colour/flavour limit. The scales of symmetry breaking are determined by two mass-squared parameters with the breaking of elec- troweak symmetry being driven radiatively. There are no other free parameters in the theory apart from gauge couplings.

Radiative symmetry breaking from interacting UV fixed points

It is shown that the addition of positive mass-squared terms to asymptotically safe gauge-Yukawa theories with perturbative UV fixed points leads to calculable radiative symmetry breaking in the IR. This phenomenon, and the multiplicative running of the operators that lies behind it, is akin to the radiative symmetry breaking that occurs in the Supersymmetric Standard Model.

On interpolations from SUSY to non-SUSY strings and their properties

The interpolation from supersymmetric to non-supersymmetric heterotic theories is studied, via the Scherk-Schwarz compactification of supersymmetric 6D theories to 4D. A general modular-invariant Scherk-Schwarz deformation is deduced from the properties of the 6D theories at the endpoints, which significantly extends previously known examples. This wider class of non-supersymmetric 4D theories opens up new possibilities for model building. The full one-loop cosmological constant of such theories is studied as a function of compactification radius for a number of cases, and the following interpolating configurations are found: two supersymmetric 6D theories related by a T-duality transformation, with intermediate 4D maximum or minimum at the string scale; a non-supersymmetric 6D theory interpolating to a supersymmetric 6D theory, with the 4D theory possibly having an AdS minimum; a "metastable" non-supersymmetric 6D theory interpolating via a 4D theory to a supersymmetric 6D theory.

A Dynamical Mechanism for Large Volumes with Consistent Couplings

A mechanism for addressing the 'decompactification problem' is proposed, which consists of balancing the vacuum energy in Scherk-Schwarzed theories against contributions coming from non- perturbative physics. Universality of threshold corrections ensures that, in such situations, the stable minimum will have consistent gauge couplings for any gauge group that shares the same N = 2 beta function for the bulk excitations as the gauge group that takes part in the minimisation. Scherk- Schwarz compactification from 6D to 4D in heterotic strings is discussed explicitly, together with two alternative possibilities for the non-perturbative physics, namely metastable SQCD vacua and a single gaugino condensate. In the former case, it is shown that modular symmetries gives various consistency checks, and allow one to follow soft-terms, playing a similar role to R-symmetry in global SQCD. The latter case is particularly attractive when there is nett Bose-Fermi degeneracy in the massless sector. In such cases, because the original Casimir energy is generated entirely by excited and/or non-physical string modes, it is completely immune to the non-perturbative IR physics. The large separation between UV and IR contributions to the potential greatly simplifies the analysis of stabilisation, and is a general possibility that has not been considered before.

Photo-production of a 750 GeV di-photon resonance mediated by Kaluza-Klein leptons in the loop

We consider the phenomenology of a 750 GeV resonance X which can be produced at the LHC by only photon fusion and subsequently decay into di-photons. We propose that the spin-zero state X is coupled to a heavy lepton that lives in the bulk of a higher-dimensional theory and interacts only with the photons of the Standard Model. We compute the di-photon rate in these models with two and more compact extra dimensions and demonstrate that they allow for a compelling explanation of the di-photon excess recently observed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. The central role in our approach is played by the summation over the Kaluza-Klein modes of the new leptons, thus providing a significant enhancement of the $X\to γγ$ loops for the production and decay subprocesses. It is expected that the jet activity accompanying these purely electromagnetic (at the partonic level) processes is numerically suppressed by factors such as $α_{em}^2 C_{q\bar{q}}/C_{γγ}\sim 10^{-3}$.
