Enhanced Pairing in the "Checkerboard" Hubbard Ladder

We study signatures of superconductivity in a 2--leg "checkerboard" Hubbard ladder model, defined as a one--dimensional (period 2) array of square plaquettes with an intra-plaquette hopping $t$ and inter-plaquette hopping $t'$, using the density matrix renormalization group method. The highest pairing scale (characterized by the spin gap or the pair binding energy, extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit) is found for doping levels close to half filling, $U\approx 6t$ and $t'/t \approx 0.6$. Other forms of modulated hopping parameters, with periods of either 1 or 3 lattice constants, are also found to enhance pairing relative to the uniform two--leg ladder, although to a lesser degree. A calculation of the phase stiffness of the ladder reveals that in the regime with the strongest pairing, the energy scale associated with phase ordering is comparable to the pairing scale.

Spin Liquid Ground State of the $S=1/2$ Kagome Heisenberg Model

Condensed matter physicists have long sought a realistic two-dimensional (2D) magnetic system whose ground state is a {\it spin liquid}---a zero temperature state in which quantum fluctuations have melted away any form of magnetic order. The nearest-neighbor $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice has seemed an ideal candidate, but in recent years some approximate numerical approaches to it have yielded instead a valence bond crystal. We have used the density matrix renormalization group to perform very accurate simulations on numerous cylinders with circumferences up to 12 lattice spacings, finding instead of the valence bond crystal a singlet-gapped spin liquid with substantially lower energy that appears to have $Z_2$ topological order. Our results, through a combination of very low energy, short correlation lengths and corresponding small finite size effects, a new rigorous energy bound, and consistent behavior on many cylinders, provide strong evidence that the 2D ground state of this model is a gapped spin liquid.

Efficient Matrix Product State Method for periodic boundary conditions

We introduce an efficient method to calculate the ground state of one-dimensional lattice models with periodic boundary conditions. The method works in the representation of Matrix Product States (MPS), related to the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) method. It improves on a previous approach by Verstraete et al. We introduce a factorization procedure for long products of MPS matrices, which reduces the computational effort from m^5 to m^3, where m is the matrix dimension, and m ~ 100 - 1000 in typical cases. We test the method on the S=1/2 and S=1 Heisenberg chains. It is also applicable to non-translationally invariant cases. The new method makes ground state calculations with periodic boundary conditions about as efficient as traditional DMRG calculations for systems with open boundaries.

Minimally Entangled Typical Thermal State Algorithms

We discuss a method based on sampling minimally entangled typical thermal states (METTS) that can simulate finite temperature quantum systems with a computational cost comparable to ground state DMRG. Detailed implementations of each step of the method are presented, along with efficient algorithms for working with matrix product states and matrix product operators. We furthermore explore how properties of METTS can reveal characteristic order and excitations of systems and discuss why METTS form an efficient basis for sampling. Finally, we explore the extent to which the average entanglement of a METTS ensemble is minimal.

Spectral functions in one-dimensional quantum systems at T>0

We present for the first time time-dependent density-matrix renormalization-group simulations (t-DMRG) at finite temperatures. It is demonstrated how a combination of finite-temperature t-DMRG and time-series prediction allows for an easy and very accurate calculation of spectral functions in one-dimensional quantum systems, irrespective of their statistics, for arbitrary temperatures. This is illustrated with spin structure factors of XX and XXX spin-1/2 chains. For the XX model we can compare against an exact solution and for the XXX model (Heisenberg antiferromagnet) against a Bethe Ansatz solution and quantum Monte Carlo data.

Spectral function of spinless fermions on a one-dimensional lattice

We study the spectral function of interacting one-dimensional fermions for an integrable lattice model away from half-filling. The divergent power-law singularity of the spectral function near the single-particle or single-hole energy is described by an effective x-ray edge type model. At low densities and for momentum near the zone boundary, we find a second divergent singularity at higher energies which is associated with a two-particle bound state. We use the Bethe ansatz solution of the model to calculate the exact singularity exponents for any momentum and for arbitrary values of chemical potential and interaction strength in the critical regime. We relate the singularities of the spectral function to the long-time decay of the fermion Green's function and compare our predictions with numerical results from the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (tDMRG). Our results show that the tDMRG method is able to provide accurate time decay exponents in the cases of power-law decay of the Green's function. Some implications for the line shape of the dynamical structure factor away from half-filling are also discussed. In addition, the spectral weight of the Luttinger liquid result for the dynamical structure factor of the Heisenberg model at zero field is compared with the exact two-spinon contribution.

Minimally entangled typical quantum states at finite temperature

We introduce a class of states, called minimally entangled typical thermal states (METTS), designed to resemble a typical state of a quantum system at finite temperature with a bias towards classical (minimally entangled) properties. These states reveal in an intuitive way properties such as short-range order which may be hidden in correlation functions. An algorithm is presented which, when used with the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), is faster by a factor of $10^3 - 10^{10}$ than previous heat-bath approaches for thermally averaged quantities.

Pairing on striped $t$-$t'$-$J$ lattices

Results are given from a density matrix renormalization group study of pairing on a striped $t$-$t'$-$J$ lattice in the presence of boundary magnetic and pair fields. We find that pairing on a stripe depends sensitively on both $J/t$ and $t'/t$. In the strong-pairing model-parameter regime the stripes are easily coupled by the pair field, and have a uniform phase. There is a small but measurable energy cost to create anti-phase superconducting domain walls.

Exact edge singularities and dynamical correlations in spin-1/2 chains

Exact formulas for the singularities of the dynamical structure factor, S^{zz}(q,omega), of the S=1/2 xxz spin chain at all q and any anisotropy and magnetic field in the critical regime are derived, expressing the exponents in terms of the phase shifts which are known exactly from the Bethe ansatz solution. We also study the long time asymptotics of the self-correlation function <0|S_j^z(t)S_j^z(0)|0>. Utilizing these results to supplement very accurate time-dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) for short to moderate times, we calculate S^{zz}(q,omega) to very high precision.

Spectral Function for the S=1 Heisenberg Antiferromagetic Chain

We study the spectral function, $S(k,ω)$ for the spin-1, one dimensional antiferromagnetic chain using a time-dependent density matrix renormalizaton group (DMRG) numerical method. We develop methods for extrapolating the time dependent correlation functions to larger times in order to enhance the frequency resolution. The resulting spectral functions are impressively precise and accurate. Our results confirm many qualitative expectations from non-linear $σ$ model methods and test them quantitatively. The critical wave-vector at which the single particle excitation emerges from the 2-particle continuum is estimated to be $0.23π-0.24π$.

Spinon-holon interactions in an anisotropic t-J chain: a comprehensive study

We consider a generalization of the one-dimensional t-J model with anisotropic spin-spin interactions. We show that the anisotropy leads to an effective attractive interaction between the spinon and holon excitations, resulting in a localized bound state. Detailed quantitative analytic predictions for the dependence of the binding energy on the anisotropy are presented, and verified by precise numerical simulations. The binding energy is found to interpolate smoothly between a finite value in the t-Jz limit and zero in the isotropic limit, going to zero exponentially in the vicinity of the latter. We identify changes in spinon dispersion as the primary factor for this non-trivial behavior.

Binding of holons and spinons in the one-dimensional anisotropic t-J model

We study the binding of a holon and a spinon in the one-dimensional anisotropic t-J model using a Bethe-Salpeter equation approach, exact diagonalization, and density matrix renormalization group methods on chains of up to 128 sites. We find that holon-spinon binding changes dramatically as a function of anisotropy parameter α=J_\perp/J_z: it evolves from an exactly deducible impurity-like result in the Ising limit to an exponentially shallow bound state near the isotropic case. A remarkable agreement between the theory and numerical results suggests that such a change is controlled by the corresponding evolution of the spinon energy spectrum.

Neel order in square and triangular lattice Heisenberg models

Using examples of the square- and triangular-lattice Heisenberg models we demonstrate that the density matrix renormalization group method (DMRG) can be effectively used to study magnetic ordering in two-dimensional lattice spin models. We show that local quantities in DMRG calculations, such as the on-site magnetization M, should be extrapolated with the truncation error, not with its square root, as previously assumed. We also introduce convenient sequences of clusters, using cylindrical boundary conditions and pinning magnetic fields, which provide for rapidly converging finite-size scaling. This scaling behavior on our clusters is clarified using finite-size analysis of the effective sigma-model and finite-size spin-wave theory. The resulting greatly improved extrapolations allow us to determine the thermodynamic limit of M for the square lattice with an error comparable to quantum Monte Carlo. For the triangular lattice, we verify the existence of three-sublattice magnetic order, and estimate the order parameter to be M = 0.205(15).

Density matrix renormalization group algorithms for Y-junctions

Systems of Y-junctions are interesting both from a fundamental viewpoint and because of their potential use in nanoscale devices. These systems can be studied numerically with the density matrix renormalization group(DMRG), but existing algorithms are inefficient. Here, we introduce a much more efficient DMRG algorithm for Y-junction systems. As an example of the use of this method, we study $S=1/2$ bound states in Heisenberg S=1 junctions with two geometries, one where the junction consists of a single site, and the other where it consists of a triangle of three sites.

Finite Temperature Density Matrix Renormalization using an enlarged Hilbert space

We apply a generalization of the time-dependent DMRG to study finite temperature properties of several quantum spin chains, including the frustrated $J_1-J_2$ model. We discuss several practical issues with the method, including use of quantum numbers and finite size effects. We compare with transfer-matrix DMRG, finding that both methods produce excellent results.

Density matrix renormalization group algorithms with a single center site

We develop a correction to the density matrix used in density matrix renormalization group calculations to take into account the incompleteness of the environment block. The correction allows successful calculations using only a single site in the center of the system, rather than the standard two sites, improving typical computation times by a factor of two to four. In addition, in many cases where ordinary DMRG can get stuck in metastable configurations, the correction eliminates the sticking. We test the new method on the Heisenberg S=1 chain.

Time-step targetting methods for real-time dynamics using DMRG

We present a time-step targetting scheme to simulate real-time dynamics efficiently using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). The algorithm works on ladders and systems with interactions beyond nearest neighbors, in contrast to existing Suzuki-Trotter based approaches.

Checkerboard patterns in the t-J model

Using the density matrix renormalization group, we study the possibility of real space checkerboard patterns arising as the ground states of the t-J model. We find that checkerboards with a commensurate (pi,pi) background are not low energy states and can only be stabilized with large external potentials. However, we find that striped states with charge density waves along the stripes can form approximate checkerboard patterns. These states can be stabilized with a very weak external field aligning and pinning the CDWs on different stripes.
