Spin-liquid versus dimerized ground states in a frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We present a Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) study of the ground-state properties of spin-1/2 frustrated $J_1-J_3$ Heisenberg $n_l$-leg ladders (with $n_l$ up to 8). For strong frustration ($J_3/J_1\simeq 0.5$), both even- and odd-leg ladders display a finite gap to spin excitations, which we argue remains finite in the two-dimensional limit. In this regime, on odd-leg ladders the ground state is spontaneously dimerized, in agreement with the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis prediction, while on even-leg ladders the dimer correlations decay exponentially. The magnitude of the dimer order parameter decreases as the number of legs increases, consistent with a two-dimensional spin-liquid ground state.

Real time evolution using the density matrix renormalization group

We describe an extension to the density matrix renormalization group method incorporating real time evolution into the algorithm. Its application to transport problems in systems out of equilibrium and frequency dependent correlation functions is discussed and illustrated in several examples. We simulate a scattering process in a spin chain which generates a spatially non-local entangled wavefunction.

Stripes on a 6-Leg Hubbard Ladder

While DMRG calculations find stripes on doped n-leg t-J ladders, little is known about the possible formation of stripes on n-leg Hubbard ladders. Here we report results for a 7x6 Hubbard model with 4 holes. We find that a stripe forms for values of U/t ranging from 6 to 20. For U/t ~ 3-4, the system exhibits the domain wall feature of a stripe, but the hole density is very broadened.

The transition between hole-pairs and four-hole clusters in four-leg tJ ladders

Holes weakly doped into a four-leg \tj ladder bind in pairs. At dopings exceeding a critical doping of $δ_c\simeq {1/8}$ four hole clusters are observed to form in DMRG calculations. The symmetry of the ground state wavefunction does not change and we are able to reproduce this behavior qualitatively with an effective bosonic model in which the four-leg ladder is represented as two coupled two-leg ladders and hole-pairs are mapped on hard core bosons moving along and between these ladders. At lower dopings, $δ<δ_c$, a one dimensional bosonic representation for hole-pairs works and allows us to calculate accurately the Luttinger liquid parameter $\krho$, which takes the universal value $\krho=1$ as half-filling is approached.

Charge Stripe in an Antiferromagnet: 1d Band of Composite Excitations

With the help of analytical and numerical studies of the $t$-$J_z$ model we argue that the charge stripe in an antiferromagnetic insulator should be understood as a system of holon-spin-polaron excitations condensed at the self-induced antiphase domain wall. The structure of such a charge excitation is studied in detail with numerical and analytical results for various quantities being in a very close agreement. An analytical picture of these excitations occupying an effective 1D stripe band is also in a very good accord with numerical data. The emerging concept advocates the primary role of the kinetic energy in favoring the stripe as a ground state. A comparative analysis suggests the effect of pairing and collective meandering on the energetics of the stripe formation to be secondary.

Friedel Oscillations and Charge Density Waves in Chains and Ladders

The density matrix renormalization group method for ladders works much more efficiently with open boundary conditions. One consequence of these boundary conditions is groundstate charge density oscillations that often appear to be nearly constant in magnitude or to decay only slightly away from the boundaries. We analyse these using bosonization techniques, relating their detailed form to the correlation exponent and distinguishing boundary induced generalized Friedel oscillations from true charge density waves. We also discuss a different approach to extracting the correlation exponent from the finite size spectrum which uses exclusively open boundary conditions and can therefore take advantage of data for much larger system sizes. A general discussion of the Friedel oscillation wave-vectors is given, and a convenient Fourier transform technique is used to determine it. DMRG results are analysed on Hubbard and t-J chains and 2 leg t-J ladders. We present evidence for the existence of a long-ranged charge density wave state in the t-J ladder at a filling of n=0.75 and near J/t \approx 0.25.

Li Induced Spin and Charge Excitations in a Spin Ladder

A lithium dopant in a cuprate spin ladder acts as a vacant (non-magnetic) site accompanied by an extra hole bound by a Coulomb potential. We find that, although the undoped ladder spin gap is not essentially altered by Li doping, a dopant-magnon bound state appears within the gap. Contrary to the case of Zn-doped ladders, we predict that, in the Li-doped ladder, the spin liquid character is very robust against antiferromagnetism. We also predict the spatial dependence of the density of states in the vicinity of the dopant which could be measured by local spectroscopic probes.

Stripe orientation in an anisotropic t-J model

The tilt pattern of the CuO_6 octahedra in the LTT phase of the cuprate superconductors leads to planar anisotropies for the exchange coupling and hopping integrals. Here, we show that these anisotropies provide a possible structural mechanism for the orientation of stripes. A t_x-t_y-J_x-J_y model thus serves as an effective Hamiltonian to describe stripe formation and orientation in LTT-phase cuprates.

On the Nagaoka polaron in the t-J model

It is widely believed that a single hole in the two (or three) dimensional t-J model, for sufficiently small exchange coupling J, creates a ferromagnetic bubble around itself, a finite J remnant of the ferromagnetic groundstate at J=0 (the infinite U Hubbard model), first established by Nagaoka. We investigate this phenomenon in two dimensions using the density matrix renormalization group, for system sizes up to 9x9. We find that the polaron forms for J/t<0.02-0.03 (a somewhat larger value than estimated previously). Although finite-size effects appear large, our data seems consistent with the expected 1.1(J/t)^{-1/4} variation of polarion radius. We also test the Brinkman-Rice model of non-retracing paths in a Neel background, showing that it is quite accurate, at larger J. Results are also presented in the case where the Heisenberg interaction is dropped (the t-J^z model). Finally we discuss a "dressed polaron" picture in which the hole propagates freely inside a finite region but makes only self-retracing excursions outside this region.

Comment on "Kagome Lattice Antiferromagnet Stripped to Its Basics"

Density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations on large systems (up to 3096 spins) indicate that the ground state of the Heisenberg model on a 3-chain Kagome strip is spontaneously dimerized. This system has degenerate ground states and a gap to triplet and singlet excitations. These results are in direct contradiction with recent results of Azaria et al (Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 1694 (1998)) and suggest a need for a reexamination of the underlying field theory.

Phase separation in t-J ladders

The phase separation boundary of isotropic t-J ladders is analyzed using density matrix renormalization group techniques. The complete boundary to phase separation as a function of J/t and doping is determined for a chain and for ladders with two, three and four legs. Six-chain ladders have been analyzed at low hole doping. We use a direct approach in which the phase separation boundary is determined by measuring the hole density in the part of the system which contains both electrons and holes. In addition we examine the binding energy of multi-hole clusters. An extrapolation in the number of legs suggests that the lowest J/t for phase separation to occur in the two dimensional t-J model is J/t~1.

Full-CI Quantum Chemistry using the Density-Matrix Renormalization Group

We describe how density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) can be used to solve the full-CI problem in quantum chemistry. As an illustration of the potential of this method, we apply it to a paramagnetic molecule. In particular, we show the effect of various basis set, the scaling as the fourth power of the size of the problem, and compare the DMRG with other methods.

Effect of the W-term for a t-U-W Hubbard ladder

Antiferromagnetic and d_{x2-y2}-pairing correlations appear delicately balanced in the 2D Hubbard model. Whether doping can tip the balance to pairing is unclear and models with additional interaction terms have been studied. In one of these, the square of a local hopping kinetic energy H_W was found to favor pairing. However, such a term can be separated into a number of simpler processes and one would like to know which of these terms are responsible for enhancing the pairing. Here we analyze these processes for a 2-leg Hubbard ladder.

Pairing Correlations on t-U-J Ladders

Pairing correlations on generalized t-U-J two-leg ladders are reported. We find that the pairing correlations on the usual t-U Hubbard ladder are significantly enhanced by the addition of a nearest-neighbor exchange interaction J. Likewise, these correlations are also enhanced for the t-J model when the onsite Coulomb interaction is reduced from infinity. Moreover, the pairing correlations are larger on a t-U-J ladder than on a t-Jeff ladder in which Jeff has been adjusted so that the two models have the same spin gap at half-filling. This enhancement of the pairing correlations is associated with an increase in the pair-binding energy and the pair mobility in the t-U-J model and point to the importance of the charge transfer nature of the cuprate systems.

Phase separation and stripe formation in the 2D t-J model: a comparison of numerical results

We make a critical analysis of numerical results for and against phase separation and stripe formation in the t-J model. We argue that the frustrated phase separation mechanism for stripe formation requires phase separation at too high a doping for it to be consistent with existing numerical studies of the t-J model. We compare variational energies for various methods, and conclude that the most accurate calculations for large systems appear to be from the density matrix renormalization group. These calculations imply that the ground state of the doped t-J model is striped, not phase separated.
