Mott-Hubbard Transition of Bosons in Optical Lattices with Three-body Interactions

In this paper, the quantum phase transition between superfluid state and Mott-insulator state is studied based on an extended Bose-Hubbard model with two- and three-body on-site interactions. By employing the mean-field approximation we find the extension of the insulating 'lobes' and the existence of a fixed point in three dimensional phase space. We investigate the link between experimental parameters and theoretical variables. The possibility to obverse our results through some experimental effects in optically trapped Bose-Einstein Condensates(BEC) is also discussed.

Spin-charge Separation in Nodal Antiferromagnetic Insulator

In this paper, by using two dimensional (2D) Hubbard models with pi-flux phase and that on a hexagonal lattice as examples, we explore spin-charge-separated solitons in nodal antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator - an AF order with massive Dirac fermionic excitations (see detail in the paper). We calculate fermion zero modes and induced quantum numbers on solitons (half skyrmions) in the continuum limit, which are similar to that in the quasi one-dimensional conductor polyacetylene (CH)x and that in topological band insulator. In particular, we find some novel phenomena : thanks to an induced staggered spin moment, a mobile half skyrmion becomes a fermionic particle; when a hole or an electron is added, the half skyrmion turns into a bosonic particle with charge degree of freedom only. Our results imply that nontrivial induced quantum number on solitons may be a universal feature of spin-charge separation in different systems.

Topological Quantum Computation by Manipulating Quantum Tunneling Effect of the Toric Codes

Quantum computers are predicted to utilize quantum states to perform memory and to process tasks far faster than those of conventional classical computers. In this paper we show a new road towards building fault tolerance quantum computer by tuning quantum tunneling effect of the degenerate quantum states in topological order, instead of by braiding anyons. Using a designer Hamiltonian - the Wen-Plaquette model as an example, we study its quantum tunneling effect of the toric codes and show how to control the toric code to realize topological quantum computation (TQC). In particular, we give a proposal to the measurement of TQC. In the end the realization of the Wen-Plaquette model in cold atoms is discussed.

Mutual Chern-Simons theory for Z_2 topological order

We study several different $Z_2$ topological ordered states in frustrated spin systems. The effective theories for those different Z_2 topological orders all have the same form -- a Z_2 gauge theory which can also be written as a mutual U(1) x U(1) Chern-Simons theory. However, we find that the different Z_2 topological orders are reflected in different projective realizations of lattice symmetry in the same effective mutual Chern-Simons theory. This result is obtained by comparing the ground-state degeneracy, the ground-state quantum numbers, the gapless edge state, and the projective symmetry group of quasi-particles calculated from the slave-particle theory and from the effective mutual Chern-Simons theories. Our study reveals intricate relations between topological order and symmetry.

Exact results of the quantum phase transition for the topological order

In this paper a duality between the d=2 Wen-plaquette model in a transverse field and the d=1 Ising model in a transverse field is used to learn the nature of the quantum phase transition (QPT) between a spin-polarized phase and a topological ordered state with the string-net condensation. The QPT is not induced by spontaneous symmetry breaking and there are no conventional Landau-type local order parameters. Instead the string-like non-local order parameters are introduced to describe the QPT. In particular, the duality character between the open-string and closed string for the QPT are explored.

Quantum Critical Point in Strongly Correlated $^{87}$Rb Atoms in Optical Lattice

In this paper, the Bosonic projected variational method is proposed to study the strongly correlated $^{87}{\rm Rb}$ atoms in optical lattice. A global phase diagram is obtained by this method. There exist two characteristic lattice depths $V$ for $^{87}{\rm Rb}$ atoms in optical lattice : one is $% V=9.5E_r$ to label the maximum height of the 'zero-momentum' peak of condensation, the other is the quantum critical point for the superfluid-insulator (SI) transition at $V=12.3E_r$. As a result of strongly correlated effect for lattice Bosons, the suppressed superfluid state is predicted near the SI transition with the suppressed superfluid density and the very slowly velocity of the sound-like excitons.

Spin Hall effect in a Doped Mott Insulator

The existence of conserved spin Hall currents is shown in a strongly correlated system without involving spin-orbit coupling. The spin Hall conductivity is determined by intrinsic bulk properties, which remains finite even when the charge resistivity diverges in strong magnetic fields at zero temperature. The state in the latter limit corresponds to a spin Hall insulator. Such a system is a doped Mott insulator described by the phase string theory, and spin Hall effect is predicted to coexist with the Nernst effect to characterize the intrinsic properties of the low-temperature pseudogap phase. Possible applications in spintronics are also mentioned.

Mutual-Chern-Simons effective theory of doped antiferromagnets

A mutual-Chern-Simons Lagrangian is derived as a minimal field theory description of the phase-string model for doped antiferromagnets. Such an effective Lagrangian is shown to retain the full symmetries of parity, time-reversal, and global SU(2) spin rotation, in contrast to conventional Chern-Simons theories where first two symmetries are usually broken. Two ordered phases, i.e., antiferromagnetic and superconducting states, are found at low temperatures as characterized by dual Meissner effects and dual flux quantization conditions due to the mutual-Chern-Simons gauge structure. A dual confinement in charge/spin degrees of freedom occurs such that no true spin-charge separation is present in these ordered phases, but the spin-charge separation/deconfinement serves as a driving force in the unconventional phase transitions of these ordered states to disordered states.

Self-localization of holes in a lightly doped Mott insulator

We show that lightly doped holes will be self-trapped in an antiferromagnetic spin background at low-temperatures, resulting in a spontaneous translational symmetry breaking. The underlying Mott physics is responsible for such novel self-localization of charge carriers. Interesting transport and dielectric properties are found as the consequences, including large doping-dependent thermopower and dielectric constant, low-temperature variable-range-hopping resistivity, as well as high-temperature strange-metal-like resistivity, which are consistent with experimental measurements in the high-T$_c$ cuprates. Disorder and impurities only play a minor and assistant role here.

Topological Gauge Structure and Phase Diagram for Weakly Doped Antiferromagnets

We show that the topological gauge structure in the phase string theory of the {\rm t-J} model gives rise to a global phase diagram of antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) phases in a weakly doped regime. Dual confinement and deconfinement of holons and spinons play essential roles here, with a quantum critical point at a doping concentration $x_c\simeq 0.043$. The complex experimental phase diagram at low doping is well described within such a framework.

Holes as Dipoles in a Doped Antiferromagnet and Stripe Instabilities

Based on an effective model of a doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator, we show that a doped hole will induce a dipole-like spin configuration in a spin ordered phase at low doping. The kinetic energy of doped holes is severely frustrated and a hole-dipole object is actually localized or self-trapped in space. Without a balance from the kinetic energy, the long-range dipole-dipole interaction between doped holes will dominate the low-energy physics, leading to an inhomogeneity instability as hole-dipoles collapse into stripes. Both antiphase metallic stripes of quarter-filling and antiphase insulating stripes along a diagonal direction are discussed as composed of hole-dipoles as elementary building blocks. Stripe melting and competing phases are also discussed.

Magnetization quantum tunneling at excited levels for a biaxial spin system in an arbitrarily directed magnetic field

The quantum tunneling of the magnetization vector between excited levels are studied theoretically in single-domain ferromagnetic nanoparticles with biaxial crystal symmetry placed in an external magnetic field at an arbitarily directed angle in the ZX plane. The temperature dependences of the tunneling frequency and the decay rate are clearly shown for each case.
