Tunneling without barriers with gravity

We consider the vacuum decay of the flat Minkowski space to an anti-de Sitter space. We find a one-parameter family of potentials that allow exact, analytical instanton solutions describing tunneling without barriers in the presence of gravity. In the absence of gravity such instantons were found and discussed by Lee and Weinberg more than a quarter of a century ago. The bounce action is also analytically computed. We discuss possible implications of these new instantons to cosmology in the context of the string theory landscape.

Exact Coleman-de Luccia Instantons

We present exact Coleman-de Luccia (CdL) instantons, which describe vacuum decay from Anti de Sitter (AdS) space, de Sitter (dS) space and Minkowski space to AdS space. We systematically obtain these exact solutions by considering deformation of Hawking-Moss (HM) instantons. We analytically calculate decay rates and discuss a subtlety in the interpretation.

Destabilizing Tachyonic Vacua at or above the BF Bound

It is well known that tachyonic vacua in an asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time are classically stable if the mass squared is at or above the Breitenlohner and Freedman (BF) bound. We study the quantum stability of these tachyonic vacua in terms of instantons. We find a series of exact instanton solutions destabilizing tachyonic state at or above the BF bound in asymptotically AdS space. We also give an analytic formula for the decay rate and show that it is finite. Comparing our result with the well-known algebraic condition for the stability, we discuss stability conditions of tachyonic vacua at or above the BF bound.

Holographic Dual of de Sitter Universe with AdS Bubbles

We study the proposal that a de Sitter (dS) universe with an Anti-de Sitter (AdS) bubble can be replaced by a dS universe with a boundary CFT. To explore this duality, we consider incident gravitons coming from the dS universe through the bubble wall into the AdS bubble in the original picture. In the dual picture, this process has to be identified with the absorption of gravitons by CFT matter. We have obtained a general formula for the absorption probability in general $d+1$ spacetime dimensions. The result shows the different behavior depending on whether spacetime dimensions are even or odd. We find that the absorption process of gravitons from the dS universe by CFT matter is controlled by localized gravitons (massive bound state modes in the Kaluza-Klein decomposition) in the dS universe. The absorption probability is determined by the effective degrees of freedom of the CFT matter and the effective gravitational coupling constant which encodes information of localized gravitons. We speculate that the dual of $d+1$ dimensional dS universe with an AdS bubble is also dual to a $d$ dimensional dS universe with CFT matter.

A Note on Gauss-Bonnet Holographic Superconductors

We present an analytic treatment near the phase transition for the critical temperature of (3+1)-dimensional holographic superconductors in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with backreaction. We find that the backreaction makes the critical temperature of the superconductor decrease and condensation harder. This is consistent with previous numerical results.

Imprints of anisotropic inflation on the cosmic microwave background

We study the imprints of anisotropic inflation on the CMB temperature fluctuations and polarizations. The statistical anisotropy stems not only from the direction dependence of curvature and tensor perturbations, but also from the cross correlation between curvature and tensor perturbations, and the linear polarization of tensor perturbations. We show that off-diagonal $TB$ and $EB$ spectrum as well as on- and off-diagonal $TT, EE, BB, TE$ spectrum are induced from anisotropic inflation. We emphasize that the off-diagonal spectrum induced by the cross correlation could be a characteristic signature of anisotropic inflation.

Anisotropic Power-law Inflation

We study an inflationary scenario in supergravity model with a gauge kinetic function. We find exact anisotropic power-law inflationary solutions when both the potential function for an inflaton and the gauge kinetic function are exponential type. The dynamical system analysis tells us that the anisotropic power-law inflation is an attractor for a large parameter region.

Stability of Holographic Superconductors

We study the dynamical stability of holographic superconductors. We first classify perturbations around black hole background solutions into vector and scalar sectors by means of a 2-dimensional rotational symmetry. We prove the stability of the vector sector by explicitly constructing the positive definite Hamiltonian. To reveal a mechanism for the stabilization of a superconducting phase, we construct a quadratic action for the scalar sector. From the action, we see the stability of black holes near a critical point is determined by the equation of motion for a charged scalar field. We show the effective mass of the charged scalar field in hairy black holes is always above the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound near the critical point due to the backreaction of a gauge field. It implies the stability of the superconducting phase. We also argue that the stability continues away from the critical point.

Gauss-Bonnet Holographic Superconductors

We study holographic superconductors in five dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity both numerically and analytically. We find the critical temperature of the superconductor decreases as backreaction is increased, although the effect of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling is more subtle: the critical temperature first decreases then increases as the coupling tends towards the Chern-Simons value in a backreaction dependent fashion. We compute the conductivity of the system, finding the energy gap, and show that the effect of both backreaction and higher curvature is to increase the gap ratio $ω_g/T_c$, thus there is no universal relation for these superconductors.

The Nature of Primordial Fluctuations from Anisotropic Inflation

We study the statistical nature of primordial fluctuations from an anisotropic inflation which is realized by a vector field coupled to an inflaton. We find a suitable gauge, which we call the canonical gauge, for anisotropic inflation by generalizing the flat slicing gauge in conventional isotropic inflation. Using the canonical gauge, we reveal the structure of the couplings between curvature perturbations, vector waves, and gravitational waves. We identify two sources of anisotropy, i.e. the anisotropy due to the anisotropic expansion of the universe and that due to the anisotropic couplings among variables. It turns out that the latter effect is dominant. Since the coupling between the curvature perturbations and vector waves is the strongest one, the statistical anisotropy in the curvature perturbations is larger than that in gravitational waves. We find the cross correlation between the curvature perturbations and gravitational waves which never occurs in conventional inflation. We also find the linear polarization of gravitational waves. Finally, we discuss cosmological implication of our results.

Holographic Superconductors with Higher Curvature Corrections

We study (3+1)-dimensional holographic superconductors in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity both numerically and analytically. It is found that higher curvature corrections make condensation harder. We give an analytic proof of this result, and directly demonstrate an analytic approximation method that explains the qualitative features of superconductors as well as giving quantitatively good numerical results. We also calculate conductivity and $ω_g / T_c $, for $ω_g$ and $T_c$ the gap in the frequency dependent conductivity and the critical temperature respectively. It turns out that the `universal' behaviour of conductivity, $ω_g / T_c \simeq 8$, is not stable to the higher curvature corrections. In the appendix, for completeness, we show our analytic method can also explain (2+1)-dimensional superconductors.

Cosmological Magnetic Fields from Inflation and Backreaction

We study the backreaction problem in a mechanism of magnetogenesis from inflation. In usual analysis, it has been assumed that the backreaction due to electromagnetic fields spoils inflation once it becomes important. However, there exists no justification for this assumption. Hence, we analyze magnetogenesis from inflation by taking into account the backreaction. On the contrary to the naive expectation, we show that inflation still continues even after the backreaction begins to work. Nevertheless, it turns out that creation of primordial magnetic fields is significantly suppressed due to the backreaction.

Inflationary Universe with Anisotropic Hair

We study an inflationary scenario with a vector field coupled with an inflaton field and show that the inflationary universe is endowed with anisotropy for a wide range of coupling functions. This anisotropic inflation is a tracking solution where the energy density of the vector field follows that of the inflaton field irrespective of initial conditions. We find a universal relation between the anisotropy and a slow-roll parameter of inflation. Our finding has observational implications and gives a counter example to the cosmic no-hair conjecture.

Anisotropic Inflation from Vector Impurity

We study an inflationary scenario with a vector impurity. We show that the universe undergoes anisotropic inflationary expansion due to a preferred direction determined by the vector. Using the slow-roll approximation, we find a formula to determine anisotropy of the inflationary universe. We discuss possible observable predictions of this scenario. In particular, it is stressed that primordial gravitational waves can be induced from curvature perturbations. Hence, even in low scale inflation, a sizable amount of primordial gravitational waves may be produced during inflation.

Circular Polarization of Primordial Gravitational Waves in String-inspired Inflationary Cosmology

We study a mechanism to produce the circular polarization of primordial gravitational waves. The circular polarization is generated during the super-inflation driven by the Gauss-Bonnet term in the string-inspired cosmology. The instability in the tensor mode caused by the Gauss-Bonnet term and the parity violation due to the gravitational Chern-Simons term are the essential ingredients of the mechanism. We also discuss detectability of the produced circular polarization of gravitational waves. It turns out that the simple model of single-field inflation contradicts CMB observations. To circumvent this difficulty, we propose a two-field inflation model. In this two-field model, the circular polarization of gravitational waves is created in the frequency range designed by the Big-Bang Observer (BBO) or the deci-hertz gravitational-wave observatory (DECIGO).

Modified Friedmann Equation and Inflation in Warped Codimension-two Braneworld

We study the Friedmann equation for the warped codimension-two braneworld background which most closely resembles the Randall-Sundrum model. Extra matter on the (Planck) 4-brane, with equation of state p_θ=(α-1)ρfor the azimuthal pressure, is required to satisfy the junction conditions. For 1 < α< 5, we show that there are two static solutions to the Einstein equations for given values of the brane stress-energies. Close to the static solutions, the relation between Hubble expansion rate H and brane tension reproduces the standard 4D result for small H, but exhibits unusual deviations when H is of order the AdS curvature scale. The two static branches for 1 <α< 5 are shown to come together smoothly at a maximum value of H; however the radion is shown to be unstable in the branch with higher H. This remains true even with a mechanism for stabilization of the radion, i.e., the Goldberger-Wise (GW) mechanism, since large enough H overcomes the force of stabilization. Even in the unstabilized case, cosmological constraints on the time and spatial variation of Newton's constant are typically satisfied; only fifth force constraints require the stabilization. For α> 5 the model is intrinsically stable, without the need for a GW field, and in this case we show that inflationary predictions can be modified by the nonstandard Friedmann equation; in particular it is possible to get an upper limit on the spectral index, large deviations from the consistency condition between the tensor spectrum and ratio r, and large running of the spectral index even though the slow roll parameters remain small.

Emergence of Fluctuations from a Tachyonic Big Bang

It has recently been speculated that the end state of a collapsing universe is a tachyonic big crunch. The time reversal of this process would be the emergence of an expanding universe from a tachyonic big bang. In this framework, we study the emergence of cosmological fluctuations. In particular, we compare the amplitude of the perturbations at tne end of the tachyon phase with what would be obtained assuming the usual vacuum initial conditions. We find that cosmological fluctuations emerge in a thermal state. We comment on the relation to the trans-Planckian problem of inflationary cosmology.

Kaluza-Klein braneworld cosmology with static internal dimensions

We investigate the Kaluza-Klein braneworld cosmology from the point of view of observers on the brane. We first generalize the Shiromizu-Maeda-Sasaki (SMS) equations to higher dimensions. As an application, we study a (4+n)-dimensional brane with n dimensions compactified on the brane, in a (5+n)-dimensional bulk. By assuming that the size of the internal space is static, that the bulk energy-momentum tensor can be neglected, we determine the effect of the bulk geometry on the Kaluza-Klein braneworld. Then we derive the effective Friedmann equation on the brane. It turns out that the Friedmann equation explicitly depends on the equation of state, in contrast to the braneworld in a 5-dimensional bulk spacetime. In particular, in a radiation-dominated era, the effective Newton constant depends on the scale factor logarithmically. If we include a pressureless matter on the brane, this dependence disappears after the radiation-matter equality. This may be interpreted as stabilization of the Newton constant by the matter on the brane. Our findings imply that the Kaluza-Klein braneworld cosmology is quite different from the conventional Kaluza-Klein cosmology even at low energy.
