Noise and decoherence induced by gravitons

We study quantum noise and decoherence induced by gravitons. We derive a Langevin equation of geodesic deviation in the presence of gravitons. The amplitude of noise correlations tells us that large squeezing is necessary to detect the noise. We also consider the decoherence of spatial superpositions of two massive particles caused by gravitons in the vacuum state and find that gravitons could give a relevant contribution to the decoherence. The decoherence induced by gravitons would offer new vistas to test quantum gravity in tabletop experiments.

Polarized initial states of primordial gravitational waves

Polarizations of primordial gravitational waves can be relevant when considering inflationary universe in modified gravity or when matter fields survive during inflation. Such polarizations have been discussed in the Bunch-Davies vacuum. Instead of taking into account dynamical generation of polarizations of gravitational waves, in this paper, we consider polarized initial states constructed from $SU(2)$ coherent states. We then evaluate the power spectrums of the primordial gravitational waves in the states.

Nonclassical primordial gravitational waves from the initial entangled state

The nonclassicality of primordial gravitational waves (PGWs) is characterized in terms of sub-Poissonian graviton statistics. The sub-Poissonian statistics are realized when quantum states are squeezed coherent states. In the presence of matter fields, the Universe experiences the squeezed coherent state during inflation. The condition to realize the sub-Poissonian graviton statistics is translated into the frequency range of gravitational waves. If the initial state is the Bunch-Davies vacuum, there is another necessary condition between phases of squeezing and coherent parameters. Here, we extend the initial state to entangled states. We consider $α$-vacua as the initial entangled state that are more general de Sitter invariant vacua than the Bunch-Davies vacuum. We find that, unlike the Bunch-Davies vacuum, PGWs generated in the initial entangled state become sub-Poissonian without requiring the condition between the phases.

Possible detection of nonclassical primordial gravitational waves with Hanbury Brown - Twiss interferometry

We consider possible detection of nonclassicality of primordial gravitational waves (PGWs) by applying Hanbury Brown - Twiss (HBT) interferometry to cosmology. We characterize the nonclassicality of PGWs in terms of sub-Poissonian statistics that can be measured by the HBT interferometry. We show that the presence of classical sources during inflation makes us possible to detect nonclassical PGWs with the HBT interferometry. We present two examples that realize the classical sources during inflation. It turns out that PGWs with frequencies higher than 10 kHz enable us to detect their nonclassicality.

Anisotropic Inflation with Derivative Couplings

We study anisotropic inflationary solutions when the inflaton and its derivative couple to a vector field. This type of coupling is motivated by D-brane inflationary models, in which the inflaton, and a vector field living on the D-brane, couple disformally (derivatively). We start by studying a phenomenological model where we show the existence of anisotropic solutions and demonstrate their stability via a dynamical system analysis. Compared to the case without a derivative coupling, the anisotropy is reduced and thus can be made consistent with current limits, while the value of the slow-roll parameter remains almost unchanged. We also discuss solutions for more general cases, including D-brane like couplings.

Quantum entanglement in de Sitter space with a wall, and the decoherence of bubble universes

We study the effect of a bubble wall on the entanglement entropy of a free massive scalar field between two causally disconnected open charts in de Sitter space. We assume there is a delta-functional wall between the open charts. This can be thought of as a model of pair creation of bubble universes in de Sitter space. We first derive the Euclidean vacuum mode functions of the scalar field in the presence of the wall in the coordinates that respect the open charts. We then derive the Bogoliubov transformation between the Euclidean vacuum and the open chart vacua that makes the reduced density matrix diagonal. We find that larger walls lead to less entanglement. Our result may be regarded as evidence of decoherence of bubble universes from each other. We also note an interesting relationship between our results and discussions of the black hole firewall problem.

Infinite violation of Bell inequalities in inflation

We study the violation of Bell-Mermin-Klyshko (BMK) inequalities in initial quantum states of scalar fields in inflation. We show that the Bell inequality is maximally violated by the Bunch-Davies vacuum which is a two-mode squeezed state of a scalar field. However, we find that the violation of the BMK inequalities does not increase with the number of modes to measure. We then consider a non-Bunch-Davies vacuum expressed by a four-mode squeezed state of two scalar fields. Remarkably, we find that the violation of the BMK inequalities increases exponentially with the number of modes to measure. This indicates that some evidence that our universe has a quantum mechanical origin may survive in CMB data even if quantum entanglement decays exponentially afterward due to decoherence.

Vacuum State of the Dirac Field in de Sitter Space and Entanglement Entropy

We compute the entanglement entropy of a free massive Dirac field between two causally disconnected open charts in de Sitter space. We first derive the Bunch-Davies vacuum mode functions of the Dirac field. We find there exists no supercurvature mode for the Dirac field. We then give the Bogoliubov transformation between the Bunch-Davies vacuum and the open chart vacua that makes the reduced density matrix diagonal. We find that the Dirac field becomes more entangled than a scalar field as $m^2/H^2$ becomes small, and the difference is maximal in the massless limit.

Quantum discord in de Sitter space

We study quantum discord between two free modes of a massive scalar field in a maximally entangled state in de Sitter space. We introduce two observers, one in a global chart and the other in an open chart of de Sitter space, and the observers determine the quantum discord created by each detecting one of the modes. This situation is analogous to the relationship between an observer in a Minkowski chart and another in one of the two Rindler charts in flat space. We find that the state becomes less entangled as the curvature of the open chart gets larger. In particular, for the cases of a massless, and a conformally coupled scalar field, the entanglement vanishes in the limit of infinite curvature. However, we find that the quantum discord never disappears even in the limit that entanglement disappears.

A note on initial state entanglement in inflationary cosmology

We give a new interpretation of the effect of initial state entanglement on the spectrum of vacuum fluctuations. We consider an initially entangled state between two free massive scalar fields in de Sitter space. We construct the initial state by making use of a Bogoliubov transformation between the Bunch-Davies vacuum and a four mode squeezed state, and then derive the exact power spectrum for one of the scalar fields. We demonstrate that an oscillatory spectrum hardly appears for the initially entangled state unless an ad hoc absolute value of the Bogoliubov coefficients is chosen.

Cosmological implications of quantum entanglement in the multiverse

We explore the cosmological implications of quantum entanglement between two causally disconnected universes in the multiverse. We first consider two causally separated de Sitter spaces with a state which is initially entangled. We derive the reduced density matrix of our universe and compute the spectrum of vacuum fluctuations. We then consider the same system with an initially non-entangled state. We find that scale dependent modulations may enter the spectrum for the case of initially non-entangled state due to quantum interference. This gives rise to the possibility that the existence of causally disconnected universes may be experimentally tested by analyzing correlators in detail.

Entanglement negativity in the multiverse

We explore quantum entanglement between two causally disconnected regions in the multiverse. We first consider a free massive scalar field, and compute the entanglement negativity between two causally separated open charts in de Sitter space. The qualitative feature of it turns out to be in agreement with that of the entanglement entropy. We then introduce two observers who determine the entanglement between two causally disconnected de Sitter spaces. When one of the observers remains constrained to a region of the open chart in a de Sitter space, we find that the scale dependence enters into the entanglement. We show that a state which is initially maximally entangled becomes more entangled or less entangled on large scales depending on the mass of the scalar field and recovers the initial entanglement in the small scale limit. We argue that quantum entanglement may provide some evidence for the existence of the multiverse.

Entanglement entropy of $α$-vacua in de Sitter space

We consider the entanglement entropy of a free massive scalar field in the one parameter family of $α$-vacua in de Sitter space by using a method developed by Maldacena and Pimentel. An $α$-vacuum can be thought of as a state filled with particles from the point of view of the Bunch-Davies vacuum. Of all the $α$-vacua we find that the entanglement entropy takes the minimal value in the Bunch-Davies solution. We also calculate the asymptotic value of the Rényi entropy and find that it increases as $α$ increases. We argue these feature stem from pair condensation within the non-trivial $α$-vacua where the pairs have an intrinsic quantum correlation.

Impact of quantum entanglement on spectrum of cosmological fluctuations

We investigate the effect of entanglement between two causally separated open charts in de Sitter space on the spectrum of vacuum fluctuations. We consider a free massive scalar field, and construct the reduced density matrix by tracing out the vacuum state for one of the open charts, as recently derived by Maldacena and Pimentel. We formulate the mean-square vacuum fluctuations by using the reduced density matrix and show that the scale invariant spectrum of massless scalar field is realized on small scales. On the other hand, we find that the quantum entanglement affects the shape of the spectrum on large scales comparable to or greater than the curvature radius.

A viable explanation of the CMB dipolar statistical anisotropy

The presence of a dipolar statistical anisotropy in the spectrum of cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuations was reported by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), and has recently been confirmed in the Planck 2013 analysis of the temperature anisotropies. At the same time, the Planck 2013 results report a stringent bound on the amplitude of the local-type non-Gaussianity. We show that the non-linear effect of the dipolar anisotropy generates not only a quadrupole moment in the CMB but also a local-type non-Gaussianity. Consequently, it is not easy to build models having a large dipolar modulation and at the same time a sufficiently small quadrupole and level of local bispectral anisotropy to agree with the present data. In particular, most models proposed so far are almost excluded, or are at best marginally consistent with observational data. We present a simple alternative scenario that may explain the dipolar statistical anisotropy while satisfying the observational bounds on both the quadrupole moment and local-type non-Gaussianity.

Schwinger effect in de Sitter space

We consider Schwinger pair production in 1+1 dimensional de Sitter space, filled with a constant electric field $E$. This can be thought of as a model for describing false vacuum decay beyond the semiclassical approximation, where pairs of a quantum field $ϕ$ of mass $m$ and charge $e$ play the role of vacuum bubbles. We find that the adiabatic "in" vacuum associated with the flat chart develops a space-like expectation value for the current $J$, which manifestly breaks the de Sitter invariance of the background fields. We derive a simple expression for $J(E)$, showing that both "upward" and "downward" tunneling contribute to the build-up of the current. For heavy fields, with $m^2\gg eE,H^2$, the current is exponentially suppressed, in agreement with the results of semiclassical instanton methods. Here $H$ is the inverse de Sitter radius. On the other hand, light fields with $ m \ll H$ lead to a phenomenon of infrared hyperconductivity, where a very small electric field $mH \lesssim eE \ll H^2$ leads to a very large current $J \sim H^3 /E$. We also show that all Hadamard states for $ϕ$ necessarily break de Sitter invariance. Finally, we comment on the role of initial conditions, and "persistence of memory" effects.

Rest frame of bubble nucleation

Vacuum bubbles nucleate at rest with a certain critical size and subsequently expand. But what selects the rest frame of nucleation? This question has been recently addressed in [1] in the context of Schwinger pair production in 1+1 dimensions, by using a model detector in order to probe the nucleated pairs. The analysis in [1] showed that, for a constant external electric field, the adiabatic "in" vacuum of charged particles is Lorentz invariant, and in this case pairs tend to nucleate preferentially at rest with respect to the detector. Here, we sharpen this picture by showing that the typical relative velocity between the frame of nucleation and that of the detector is at most of order Δv ~ S_E^{-1/3} << 1. Here, S_E >> 1 is the action of the instanton describing pair creation. The bound Δv coincides with the minimum uncertainty in the velocity of a non-relativistic charged particle embedded in a constant electric field. A velocity of order Δv is reached after a time interval of order Δt ~ S_E^{-1/3} r_0 << r_0 past the turning point in the semiclassical trajectory, where r_0 is the size of the instanton. If the interaction takes place in the vicinity of the turning point, the semiclassical description of collision does not apply. Nonetheless, we find that even in this case there is still a strong asymmetry in the momentum transferred from the nucleated particles to the detector, in the direction of expansion after the turning point. We conclude that the correlation between the rest frame of nucleation and that of the detector is exceedingly sharp.

Observer dependence of bubble nucleation and Schwinger pair production

Pair production in a constant electric field is closely analogous to bubble nucleation in a false vacuum. The classical trajectories of the pairs are Lorentz invariant, but it appears that this invariance should be broken by the nucleation process. Here, we use a model detector, consisting of other particles interacting with the pairs, to investigate how pair production is seen by different Lorentzian observers. We focus on the idealized situation where a constant external electric field is present for an infinitely long time, and we consider the in-vacuum state for a charged scalar field that describes the nucleating pairs. The in-vacuum is defined in terms of modes which are positive frequency in the remote past. Even though the construction uses a particular reference frame and a gauge where the vector potential is time dependent, we show explicitly that the resulting quantum state is Lorentz invariant. We then introduce a "detector" particle which interacts with the nucleated pairs, and show that all Lorentzian observers will see the particles and antiparticles nucleating preferentially at rest in the detector's rest frame. Similar conclusions are expected to apply to bubble nucleation in a sufficiently long lived vacuum. We also comment on certain unphysical aspects of the Lorentz invariant in-vacuum, associated with the fact that it contains an infinite density of particles. This can be easily remedied by considering Lorentz breaking initial conditions.
