Resummation-based updates for Stochastic Series Expansion Quantum Monte Carlo

For spin rotational symmetric models with a positive-definite high-temperature expansion of the partition function, a stochastic sampling of the series expansion upon partial resummation becomes logically equivalent to sampling an uncoloured closely-packed loop-gas model in one higher dimension. Based on this, we devise quantum Monte Carlo updates that importance-sample loop configurations for general $SU(N)$ in fundamental and higher-symmetric representations. The algorithmic performance systematically improves with increase in (continuous) $N$ allowing efficient simulation of quantum paramagnets. The underlying reason for the increased efficacy is the correspondence of quantum paramagnetic phases like valence bond solids to short-loop phases on the loop-gas side rather than the particular value of $N$. This also gives a connection between Sandvik's $JQ$ model class and classical loop-gas models in the deconfined universality class.

Unusual spin dynamics in the low-temperature magnetically ordered state of Ag$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$

Recently, there have been contrary claims of Kitaev spin-liquid behaviour and ordered behavior in the honeycomb compound Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ based on various experimental signatures. Our investigations on this system reveal a low-temperature ordered state with persistent dynamics down to the lowest temperatures. Magnetic order is confirmed by clear oscillations in the muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) time spectrum below 9 K till 52 mK. Coincidentally in $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance, a wipe-out of the signal is observed below $\sim$ 10 K which again strongly indicates magnetic order in the low temperature regime. This is supported by our density functional theory calculations which show an appreciable Heisenberg exchange term in the spin Hamiltonian that favors magnetic ordering. The $^7$Li shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate also show anomalies at $\sim$ 50 K. They are likely related to the onset of dynamic magnetic correlations, but their origin is not completely clear. Detailed analysis of our $μ$SR data is consistent with a co-existence of incommensurate Néel and striped environments. A significant and undiminished dynamical relaxation rate ($\sim 5$ MHz) as seen in $μ$SR deep into the ordered phase indicates enhanced quantum fluctuations in the ordered state.

Bilayer Coulomb phase of two dimensional dimer models: Absence of power-law columnar order

We study the fully-packed dimer model on the bilayer square lattice with fugacity equal to $z$ ($1$) for inter-layer (intra-layer) dimers, and intra-layer interaction $V$ between neighbouring parallel dimers on any elementary plaquette in either layer. For a range of not-too-large $z> 0$ and repulsive interactions $0< V < V_s$ (with $V_s \approx 2.1$), we demonstrate the existence of a {\em bilayer Coulomb phase} with purely dipolar two-point functions, {\em i.e.}, without the power-law columnar order that characterizes the usual Coulomb phase of square and honeycomb lattice dimer models. The transition line $z_{c}(V)$ separating this bilayer Coulomb phase from a large-$z$ disordered phase is argued to be in the inverted Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class. Additionally, we argue for the possibility of a tricritical point at which the bilayer Coulomb phase, the large-$z$ disordered phase and the large-$V$ staggered phase meet in the large-$z$, large-$V$ part of the phase diagram. In contrast, for the attractive case with $ V_{cb} < V \leq 0$ ($V_{cb} \approx -1.2$), we argue that any $z > 0$ destroys the power-law correlations of the $z=0$ decoupled layers, and leads immediately to a short-range correlated state, albeit with a slow crossover for small $|V|$. For $V_{c} < V < V_{cb}$ ($V_{c} \approx -1.55$), we predict that any small nonzero $z$ immediately gives rise to long-range {\em bilayer columnar order} although the $z=0$ decoupled layers remain power-law correlated in this regime; this implies a non-monotonic $z$ dependence of the columnar order parameter for fixed $V$ in this regime. This bilayer columnar ordered state is separated from the large-$z$ disordered state by a line of Ashkin-Teller transitions $z_{\rm AT}(V)$.

Colorful points in the XY regime of XXZ quantum magnets

In the XY regime of the XXZ Heisenberg model phase diagram, we demonstrate that the origin of magnetically ordered phases is influenced by the presence of solvable points with exact quantum coloring ground states featuring a quantum-classical correspondence. Using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group calculations, for both the square and the triangular lattice magnets, we show that the ordered physics of the solvable points in the extreme XY regime, at $\frac{J_z}{J_\perp}=-1$ and $\frac{J_z}{J_\perp}=-\frac{1}{2}$ respectively with $J_\perp > 0$, adiabatically extends to the more isotropic regime $\frac{J_z}{J_\perp} \sim 1$. We highlight the projective structure of the coloring ground states to compute the correlators in fixed magnetization sectors which enables an understanding of the features in the static spin structure factors and correlation ratios. These findings are contrasted with an anisotropic generalization of the celebrated one-dimensional Majumdar-Ghosh model, which is also found to be (ground state) solvable. For this model, both exact dimer and three-coloring ground states exist at $\frac{J_z}{J_\perp}=-\frac{1}{2}$ but only the two dimer ground states survive for any $\frac{J_z}{J_\perp} > -\frac{1}{2}$.

Size Dependence in Flux-Flow Hall Effect using Time-Dependent Ginzburg-Landau Equations

We study the Hall effect in square, planar type-II superconductors using numerical simulations of time dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equations. The Hall field in some type-II superconductors displays sign-change behavior at some magnetic fields due to the induced field of vortex flow, when its contribution is strong enough to reverse the field direction. In this work, we use modified TDGL equations which couple an externally applied current, and also incorporate normal-state and flux-flow Hall effects. We obtain the profile of Hall angle as a function of applied magnetic field for four different sizes (l\times l) of the superconductor: l/ ξbelongs to {3, 5, 15, 20}. We obtain vastly different profiles for each size, proving that size is an important parameter that determines Hall behavior. We find that electric field dynamics provides an insight into several anomalous features including signchange of Hall angle, and leads us to the precise transient behavior of order parameter responsible for them.

On the topological character of three-dimensional Nexus triple point degeneracies

Recently a generic class of three-dimensional band structures was identified that host two-fold line degeneracies meeting at three-fold or triple point degeneracies, which resist the usual topological characterization of isolated point degeneracies as in Dirac/Weyl semimetals. For these so-called ``Nexus" fermions which lie beyond Dirac/Weyl fermions, we lay out several concepts to characterize the wavefunction geometry and spell out its topology. Our approach is based on an understanding of the analyticity properties of Nexus wavefunctions building on a two-dimensional analogue studied recently by us. We use this to write down a homological classification of various Nexus triple point degeneracies in three dimensions.

Gapless quantum spin liquid in the triangular system Sr$_{3}$CuSb$_{2}$O$_{9}$

We report gapless quantum spin liquid behavior in the layered triangular Sr$_{3}$CuSb$_{2}$O$_{9}$ (SCSO) system. X-ray diffraction shows superlattice reflections associated with atomic site ordering into triangular Cu planes well-separated by Sb planes. Muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements show that the $S = \frac{1}{2}$ moments at the magnetically active Cu sites remain dynamic down to 65 mK in spite of a large antiferromagnetic exchange scale evidenced by a large Curie-Weiss temperature $θ_{\mathrm{cw}} \simeq $ -143 K as extracted from the bulk susceptibility. Specific heat measurements also show no sign of long-range order down to 0.35 K. The magnetic specific heat ($\mathit{C}$$_{\mathrm{m}}$) below 5 K reveals a $\mathit{C}$$_{\mathrm{m}}$ $=$ $γT$ + $αT$$^{2}$ behavior. The significant $T$$^{2}$ contribution to the magnetic specific heat invites a phenomenology in terms of the so-called Dirac spinon excitations with a linear dispersion. From the low-$T$ specific heat data, we estimate the dominant exchange scale to be $\sim $ 36 K using a Dirac spin liquid ansatz which is not far from the values inferred from microscopic density functional theory calculations ($\sim $ 45 K) as well as high-temperature susceptibility analysis ($\sim$ 70 K). The linear specific heat coefficient is about 18 mJ/mol-K$^2$ which is somewhat larger than for typical Fermi liquids.

Symmetry protection and giant Fermi arcs from multifold fermions in binary, ternary, and quaternary compounds

Higher-fold chiral fermions that go beyond two-fold Weyl fermions have recently been reported in crystalline systems. Here, we focus on such excitations in several binary, ternary and quaternary alloys/compounds with CoGe, BiSbPt and KMgBO3 as the representative examples that belong to the crystal space group (SG) 198. We found distinct three-fold, four-fold and six-fold chiral fermions in the bulk via Density Functional computations. We provide general symmetry arguments for the protection of these degeneracies with special emphasis on the four-fold fermions. Our surface spectra simulations show that the size of Fermi arcs resulting from these chiral fermions are large, robust and untouched from the bulk states due to the near absence of trivial bulk Fermi pockets. All these features make these systems -- especially CoGe and KMgBO3 -- promising topological semimetal candidates to realize higher-fold fermions in future photo-emission and transport experiments.

Signatures of a spin-1/2 cooperative paramagnet in the diluted triangular lattice of Y$_2$CuTiO$_6$

We present a combination of thermodynamic and dynamic experimental signatures of a disorder driven dynamic cooperative paramagnet in a 50% site diluted triangular lattice spin-1/2 system, Y$_2$CuTiO$_6$. Magnetic ordering and spin freezing are absent down to 50 mK, far below the Curie Weiss scale of ~-134 K. We observe scaling collapses of the magnetic field- and temperature-dependent magnetic heat capacity and magnetisation data, respectively, in conformity with expectations from the random singlet physics. Our experiments establish the suppression of any freezing scale, if at all present, by more than three orders of magnitude, opening a plethora of interesting possibilities such as disorder-stabilized long range quantum entangled ground states.

SU(3) fermions in a three-band Graphene-like model

Two-dimensional Graphene is fascinating because of its unique electronic properties. From a fundamental perspective, one among them is the geometric phase structure near the Dirac points in the Brillouin zone, owing to the SU(2) nature of the Dirac cone wave functions. We ask if there are geometric phase structures in two dimensions which go beyond that of a Dirac cone. Here we write down a family of three-band continuum models of non-interacting fermions which have more intricate geometric phase structures. This is connected to the SU(3) nature of the wavefunctions near three-fold degeneracies. We also give a tight-binding free fermion model on a two-dimensional Graphene-like lattice where the three-fold degeneracies are realized at fine-tuned points. Away from them, we obtain new "three-band" Dirac cone structures with associated non-standard Landau level quantization, whose organization is strongly affected by the non-SU(2) or beyond-Dirac geometric phase structure of the fine-tuned points.

Effective Hopping in Holographic Bose and Fermi-Hubbard Models

In this paper, we analyze a proposed gravity dual to a $SU(N)$ Bose-Hubbard model, as well as construct a holographic dual of a $SU(N)$ Fermi-Hubbard model from D-branes in string theory. In both cases, the $SU(N)$ is dynamical, i.e. the hopping degrees of freedom are strongly coupled to $SU(N)$ gauge bosons which themselves are strongly interacting. The vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the hopping term (i.e. the hopping energy) is analyzed in the gravity dual as a function of the bulk mass of the field dual to the hopping term, as well as of the coupling constants of the model. The bulk mass controls the anomalous dimension (i.e. the critical exponent) of the hopping term in the $SU(N)$ Bose-Hubbard model. We compare the hopping energy to the corresponding result in a numerical simulation of the ungauged $SU(N)$ Bose-Hubbard model. We find agreement when the hopping parameter is smaller than the other couplings. Our analysis shows that the kinetic energy increases as the bulk mass increases, due to increased contributions from the IR. The holographic Bose-Hubbard model is then compared with the string theory construction of a $SU(N)$ Fermi-Hubbard model. The string theory construction makes it possible to describe fluctuations around a half-filled state in the supergravity limit, which map to ${\cal O}(1)$ occupation number fluctuations in the Fermi-Hubbard model at half filling. Finally, the VEV of the Bose-Hubbard model is shown to agree with the one of the fermionic Hubbard model with the help of a two-site version of the Jordan-Wigner transformation.

Resonating quantum three-coloring wavefunctions for the kagome quantum antiferromagnet

Motivated by the recent discovery of a macroscopically degenerate exactly solvable point of the spin-$1/2$ $XXZ$ model for $J_z/J=-1/2$ on the kagome lattice [H. J. Changlani et al. Phys. Rev. Lett 120, 117202 (2018)] -- a result that holds for arbitrary magnetization -- we develop an exact mapping between its exact quantum three-coloring wavefunctions and the characteristic localized and topological magnons. This map, involving resonating two-color loops, is developed to represent exact many-body ground state wavefunctions for special high magnetizations. Using this map we show that these exact ground state solutions are valid for any $J_z/J \geq -1/2$. This demonstrates the equivalence of the ground-state wavefunction of the Ising, Heisenberg and $XY$ regimes all the way to the $J_z/J=-1/2$ point for these high magnetization sectors. In the hardcore bosonic language, this means that a certain class of exact many-body solutions, previously argued to hold for purely repulsive interactions ($J_z \geq 0$), actually hold for attractive interactions as well, up to a critical interaction strength. For the case of zero magnetization, where the ground state is not exactly known, we perform density matrix renormalization group calculations. Based on the calculation of the ground state energy and measurement of order parameters, we provide evidence for a lack of any qualitative change in the ground state on finite clusters in the Ising ($J_z \gg J$), Heisenberg ($J_z=J$) and $XY$ ($J_z=0$) regimes, continuing adiabatically to the vicinity of the macroscopically degenerate $J_z/J=-1/2$ point. These findings offer a framework for recent results in the literature, and also suggest that the $J_z/J=-1/2$ point is an unconventional quantum critical point whose vicinity may contain the key to resolving the spin-$1/2$ kagome problem.

Sign-problem-free Monte Carlo simulation of certain frustrated quantum magnets

We introduce a Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method which efficiently simulates in a sign-problem-free way a broad class of frustrated $S=1/2$ models with competing antiferromagnetic interactions. Our scheme uses the basis of total spin eigenstates of clusters of spins to avoid the severe sign problem faced by other QMC methods. We also flag important limitations of the new method, and comment on possibilities for further progress.

Interaction induced Dirac fermions from quadratic band touching in bilayer graphene

We revisit the effect of local interactions on the quadratic band touching (QBT) of Bernal stacked bilayer graphene models using renormalization group (RG) arguments and quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the Hubbard model. We present an RG argument which predicts, contrary to previous studies, that weak interactions do not flow to strong coupling even if the free dispersion has a QBT. Instead they generate a linear term in the dispersion, which causes the interactions to flow back to weak coupling. Consistent with this RG scenario, in unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the Hubbard model we find compelling evidence that antiferromagnetism turns on at a finite $U/t$, despite the $U=0$ hopping problem having a QBT. The onset of antiferromagnetism takes place at a continuous transition which is consistent with a dynamical critical exponent $z=1$ as expected for 2+1 d Gross-Neveu criticality. We conclude that generically in models of bilayer graphene, even if the free dispersion has a QBT, small local interactions generate a Dirac phase with no symmetry breaking and that there is a finite-coupling transition out of this phase to a symmetry-broken state.

Transitions to valence-bond solid order in a honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet

We use Quantum Monte-Carlo methods to study the ground state phase diagram of a S=1/2 honeycomb lattice magnet in which a nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange J (favoring Néel order) competes with two different multi-spin interaction terms: a six-spin interaction Q_3 that favors columnar valence-bond solid (VBS) order, and a four-spin interaction Q_2 that favors staggered VBS order. For Q_3 ~ Q_2 >> J, we establish that the competition between the two different VBS orders stabilizes Néel order in a large swathe of the phase diagram even when J is the smallest energy-scale in the Hamiltonian. When Q_3 >> (Q_2,J) (Q_2 >> (Q_3,J)), this model exhibits at zero temperature phase transition from the Néel state to a columnar (staggered) VBS state. We establish that the Néel-columnar VBS transition is continuous for all values of Q_2, and that critical properties along the entire phase boundary are well-characterized by critical exponents and amplitudes of the non-compact CP^1 (NCCP^1) theory of deconfined criticality, similar to what is observed on a square lattice. However, a surprising three-fold anisotropy of the phase of the VBS order parameter at criticality, whose presence was recently noted at the Q_2=0 deconfined critical point, is seen to persist all along this phase boundary. We use a classical analogy to explore this by studying the critical point of a three-dimensional XY model with a four-fold anisotropy field which is known to be weakly irrelevant at the three-dimensional XY critical point. In this case, we again find that the critical anisotropy appears to saturate to a nonzero value over the range of sizes accessible to our simulations.

Boson features in STM spectra of cuprate superconductors: Weak-coupling phenomenology

We derive the shape of the high-energy features due to a weakly coupled boson in cuprate superconductors, as seen experimentally in Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca_1 Cu_2 O_8+x (BSCCO) by Lee et al. [Nature (London) 442, 546 (2006)]. A simplified model is used of d-wave Bogoliubov quasiparticles coupled to Einstein oscillators with a momentum-independent electron-boson coupling and an analytic fitting form is derived, which allows us (a) to extract the boson mode's frequency and (b) to estimate the electron-boson coupling strength. We further calculate the maximum possible superconducting gap due to an Einstein oscillator with the extracted electron-boson coupling strength, which is found to be less than 0.2 times of the observed gap indicating at the observed boson's non-dominant role in the superconductivity's mechanism. The extracted momentum-independent electron-boson coupling parameter (that we show a posteriori to indeed be in the weak-coupling regime) is then to be interpreted as an (band-structure detail dependent weighted) average over the Brillouin zone of the actual momentum-dependent electron-boson coupling in BSCCO.

Emergent Spin Excitations in a Bethe Lattice at Percolation

We study the spin 1/2 quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a Bethe lattice diluted to the percolation threshold. Dilution creates areas of even/odd sublattice imbalance resulting in "dangling spins" (L. Wang and A. W. Sandvik, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 117204 (2006); Phys. Rev. B 81, 054417 (2010)). These collectively act as "emergent" spin 1/2 degrees of freedom and are responsible for the creation of a set of low lying "quasidegenerate states". Using Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) calculations, we detect the presence and location of these emergent spins. We find an effective Hamiltonian of these emergent spins, with Heisenberg interactions that decay exponentially with the distance between them.
