Complete Flux Scheme for Elliptic Singularly Perturbed Differential-Difference Equations

In this study, we propose a new scheme named as complete flux scheme (CFS) based on the finite volume method for solving singularly perturbed differential-difference equations (SPDDEs) of elliptic type. An alternate integral representation for the flux is obtained which plays an important role in the derivation of CF scheme. We have established the stability, consistency and quadrature convergence of the proposed scheme. The scheme is successfully implemented on test problems.

Structural, dielectric and ferroelectric studies of thermally stable and efficient energy storage ceramic material: (Na0.5-xKxBi0.5-xLax)TiO3

The structural, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of lead-free (Na0.5-xKxBi0.5-xLax)TiO3 powders synthesized by sol-gel self-combustion method were investigated. Rietveld refinement of Synchrotron x-ray diffraction data confirms pure single phase rhombohedral crystal structure with R3c space group for all the compositions and anti-phase octahedral tilting angle decreased with increase in composition x. Homogeneity and elemental proportions were confirmed by Energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry. The temperature-dependent dielectric study has shown two diffuse type of dielectric anomaly for all the samples, due to A-site disorder in the lattice, which has been assigned to two-has transitions: ferroelectric to anti-ferroelectric and anti-ferroelectric to the paraelectric phase transition. The transition temperature of these phase transitions is found to decrease as a function of composition. Thermal stability range of dielectric constant increases from ~100C to 220C as a function of composition. Stable dielectric constant first increases, from 1557 10 % for parent compound, with the composition, highest for 6 % composition with emid ~ 2508 10 % for the temperature range ~180 C to 340C and after that decreases to 1608 10 % for 12 % but remain higher than the parent compound Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3. Ferroelectric measurements have shown monotonously decreasing coercive field as a function of the composition due to a decrease in grain size, confirmed by microstructural studies using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope. Exponential increases in the energy storage efficiency from ~ 17 % to 87 % as a function of composition have also observed. These types of materials, with stable high dielectric constant and low tan delta, have a vast scope in the field of the thermally stable dielectric constant materials and energy storage applications.

(Pb1-xBix)(Ti1-xMnx)O3: Competing mechanism of Tetragonal-Cubic phase on A/B site modifications

Structural, vibrational and dielectric properties of (Pb1-xBix)(Ti1-xMnx)O3 (PBTM) (0 x 0.50) polycrystalline ceramics have been examined as a function of temperature. Synchrotron-based powder x-ray diffraction was employed to confirm phase purity and crystal structure of samples. Tetragonality (c/a ratio) of the PBTM system exhibit an increase 1.065, 1.066 for x = 0.06 and 0.09 compositions respectively, compare to 1.064 for x = 0 sample. Curie point was found ~763 K and 773 K for x = 0.06 and 0.09 samples respectively. Though, tetragonality start to decreasing from samples with x 0.18, Curie point of the samples started decreasing for x 0.12. Temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction reveals the structural change from tetragonal to cubic structure. Unit cell volume was found to decrease with increasing temperature; indicate these materials are negative thermal expansion type until phase transition temperature, with negative thermal coefficients are -1.571*10-5 /K, -2.44*10-5 /K, and -5.025*10-6 /K for x = 0, 0.06, and 0.09 samples respectively. Raman spectra showed softening of the transverse optical phonon modes and increase in the full width at half maxima with the increase in composition. Field-emission scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer (EDS) confirmed compositional homogeneity and dense type microstructure.

Structural, Electrical, and Magnetic Properties of La2Ni1.5Mn0.5O6 double perovskites

Among multifunctional double perovskite oxides, La2NiMnO6 has recently drawn significant attention due to its importance both in terms of understanding of fundamental physics and potential for device applications. The relative alteration in Ni:Mn ratio strongly influences the structural, magnetic and electrical properties of La2NiMnO6. In the present study, La2Ni1.5Mn0.5O6 sample with Ni:Mn = 3:1 ratio has been prepared using sol-gel method and modifications of the above physical properties from that of a stiochiometric sample of La2NiMnO6 are discussed. Rietveld analysis of X-ray diffraction data shows that La2Ni1.5Mn0.5O6 samples belong to a major monoclinic structural phase (P21/n), with partially disordered arrangement of Ni and Mn ions. Magnetic characterization and X-ray absorption near edge structure analysis reveal ferromagnetic ordering around 260 K between Ni2+ and Mn4+ ions while spin glass like behavior is revealed at ~45 K. Semiconducting nature of the sample was confirmed from temperature dependent resistivity measurements as well as from the I-V characteristics measured at room temperature.

Ultrafast Response of Plasmonic Nanostructures

Plasmonic metal nanostructures are an integral part of nanophotonic device applications owing to their ability to generate strong localized electromagnetic fields when illuminated from the far-field. These nanostructures can be prepared in the laboratory with precise shape and size by various chemical and physical synthesis techniques as demonstrated in recent years. Typically, the size of these structures is in the range of few nm to a few hundred nm, i.e., much below the wavelength of light of observation or excitation. The focus of this chapter is to exploit the ultrafast response of metal nanostructures following femtosecond laser pulse excitation. Femtosecond laser pulses are very important experimental probes to explore the material response at an ultrafast time scale (~10-10,000 fs) on the order of the electronic and vibrational wave packet dynamics in solids and molecules. Broadly, after ultrafast optical excitation the system of study undergoes various microscopic dynamical changes which can be monitored in real time so as to understand the intermediate stages before the system returns to the equilibrium.

Investigation of La and Al substitution on the spontaneous polarization and lattice dynamics of the Pb(1-x)LaxTi(1-x)AlxO3 ceramics

The phase purity and crystal structure of PLTA samples (synthesized via sol-gel process) were confirmed using synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction (wavelength, lmbda= 0.44573 A. Rietveld analyses of powder x-ray diffraction data confirmed the tetragonal structure for compositions with more than 0.18 and cubic structure for the sample with 0.25 composition. Temperature-dependent XRD was performed to investigate the structural change from tetragonal to cubic structure phase transition. Raman spectroscopy at room temperature also confirmed this phase transition with composition. Field emission scanning electron provided information about surface morphology while an energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer attached with FESEM confirmed the chemical compositions of samples. Temperature and frequency dependent dielectric studies showed that the tetragonal to cubic phase transition decreased from 680 K to 175 K with the increase in the x from 0.03 to 0.25, respectively. This is correlated with the structural studies. Electric field dependent spontaneous polarization showed proper ferroelectric loop for 0.06 to 0.18 belonging to a tetragonal phase while after 0.25 composition the spontaneous polarization vanishes.Bipolar strain versus electric field revealed a butterfly loop for 0.06 to 0.18 compositions. Energy storage efficiency initially increases nominally with substitution but beyond 0.18 composition enhances considerably.

Inferring gene expression networks with hubs using a degree weighted Lasso approach

Genome-scale gene networks contain regulatory genes called hubs that have many interaction partners. These genes usually play an essential role in gene regulation and cellular processes. Despite recent advancements in high-throughput technology, inferring gene networks with hub genes from high-dimensional data still remains a challenging problem. Novel statistical network inference methods are needed for efficient and accurate reconstruction of hub networks from high-dimensional data. To address this challenge we propose DW-Lasso, a degree weighted Lasso (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) method which infers gene networks with hubs efficiently under the low sample size setting. Our network reconstruction approach is formulated as a two stage procedure: first, the degree of networks is estimated iteratively, and second, the gene regulatory network is reconstructed using degree information. A useful property of the proposed method is that it naturally favors the accumulation of neighbors around hub genes and thereby helps in accurate modeling of the high-throughput data under the assumption that the underlying network exhibits hub structure. In a simulation study, we demonstrate good predictive performance of the proposed method in comparison to traditional Lasso type methods in inferring hub and scale-free graphs. We show the effectiveness of our method in an application to microarray data of \textit{E.coli} and RNA sequencing data of Kidney Clear Cell Carcinoma from The Cancer Genome Atlas datasets.

Morphological characterization of Ge ion implanted SiO2 matrix using multifractal technique

200 nm thick SiO2 layers grown on Si substrates and Ge ions of 150 keV energy were implanted into SiO2 matrix with Different fluences. The implanted samples were annealed at 950 C for 30 minutes in Ar ambience. Topographical studies of implanted as well as annealed samples were captured by the atomic force microscopy (AFM). Two dimension (2D) multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MFDFA) based on the partition function approach has been used to study the surfaces of ion implanted and annealed samples. The partition function is used to calculate generalized Hurst exponent with the segment size. Moreover, it is seen that the generalized Hurst exponents vary nonlinearly with the moment, thereby exhibiting the multifractal nature. The multifractality of surface is pronounced after annealing for the surface implanted with fluence 7.5X1016 ions/cm^2.

Non-exponential decoherence and subdiffusion in atom-optics kicked rotor

Quantum systems lose coherence upon interaction with the environment and tend towards classical states. Quantum coherence is known to exponentially decay in time so that macroscopic quantum superpositions are generally unsustainable. In this work, slower than exponential decay of coherences is experimentally realized in an atom-optics kicked rotor system subjected to non-stationary Lévy noise in the applied kick sequence. The slower coherence decay manifests in the form of quantum subdiffusion that can be controlled through the Lévy exponent. The experimental results are in good agreement with the analytical estimates and numerical simulations for the mean energy growth and momentum profiles of atom-optics kicked rotor.

Structural and ferroelectric properties of perovskite Pb(1-x)(K0.5Sm0.5)xTiO3 ceramics

PbTiO3 has the highest tetragonal distortion (c/a=1.064) and highest spontaneous polarization among perovskite titanates. But, it is hazardous and hence one needs to reduce Pb content by substituting or reducing Pb content for use in applications. Pb(1-x)(K0.5Sm0.5)xTiO3 (0&x&0.5) perovskite powders were synthesized by sol-gel process, where Pb2+ was replaced by a combination of K+10.5Sm+30.5 (equivalent charge and comparable ionic radius) providing an excellent substitution model to study changes in structural and electrical properties. Vibrational properties and dielectric properties are modified with substitution. A polar tetragonal to a nearly nonpolar cubic phase transition decreases to lower temperatures with substitution due to reduces the lattice strain with substitution. Ferroelectricity is retained even for x=0.5, which has a nearly cubic phase and makes the material technologically important.

Structural and dielectric properties of Pb(1-x)(Na0.5Sm0.5)xTiO3 ceramics

A correlation between structure and vibrational properties related to a ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition in perovskite Pb(1-x)(Na0.5Sm0.5)xTiO3 (PNST - x) polycrystalline powders is discussed. Substitution leads to reduction of tetragonality which is associated with a shift of the phase transition to lower temperatures. The nature of the phase transition gets diffused with increasing substitution.

Feasibility of Principal Component Analysis in hand gesture recognition system

Nowadays actions are increasingly being handled in electronic ways, instead of physical interaction. From earlier times biometrics is used in the authentication of a person. It recognizes a person by using a human trait associated with it like eyes (by calculating the distance between the eyes) and using hand gestures, fingerprint detection, face detection etc. Advantages of using these traits for identification are that they uniquely identify a person and cannot be forgotten or lost. These are unique features of a human being which are being used widely to make the human life simpler. Hand gesture recognition system is a powerful tool that supports efficient interaction between the user and the computer. The main moto of hand gesture recognition research is to create a system which can recognise specific hand gestures and use them to convey useful information for device control. This paper presents an experimental study over the feasibility of principal component analysis in hand gesture recognition system. PCA is a powerful tool for analyzing data. The primary goal of PCA is dimensionality reduction. Frames are extracted from the Sheffield KInect Gesture (SKIG) dataset. The implementation is done by creating a training set and then training the recognizer. It uses Eigen space by processing the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the images in training set. Euclidean distance with the threshold value is used as similarity metric to recognize the gestures. The experimental results show that PCA is feasible to be used for hand gesture recognition system.

A Fast Keypoint Based Hybrid Method for Copy Move Forgery Detection

Copy move forgery detection in digital images has become a very popular research topic in the area of image forensics. Due to the availability of sophisticated image editing tools and ever increasing hardware capabilities, it has become an easy task to manipulate the digital images. Passive forgery detection techniques are more relevant as they can be applied without the prior information about the image in question. Block based techniques are used to detect copy move forgery, but have limitations of large time complexity and sensitivity against affine operations like rotation and scaling. Keypoint based approaches are used to detect forgery in large images where the possibility of significant post processing operations like rotation and scaling is more. A hybrid approach is proposed using different methods for keypoint detection and description. Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) are used to detect the keypoints in the image and Binary Robust Invariant Scalable Keypoints (BRISK) features are used to describe features at these keypoints. The proposed method has performed better than the existing forgery detection method using SURF significantly in terms of detection speed and is invariant to post processing operations like rotation and scaling. The proposed method is also invariant to other commonly applied post processing operations like adding Gaussian noise and JPEG compression

Importance of strain reduction in improvement of optical transmission and conductance in Si4+ doped ZnO: a probable new moisture resistant Transparent Conductive Oxide

Si doped ZnO has been reported to be a better conductor than pure ZnO. It is reported that carrier density increases and hence conductivity increases. However, the effect on optical transmission is yet not clear until our recent report [1]. Zn1-xSixO for x= 0, 0.013, 0.020 and 0.027 have been synthesized using sol-gel method (a citric acid-glycerol route) followed by solid state sintering. We found that there is a decrease in defect states due to Si doping. The correlation of strain to the decrement in vacancy sites is discussed in this report. In modern electronics and solar cell fabrication, transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) are important components which conduct electrically without absorbing visible light. Known TCOs are extremely costly and are composed of non-abundant elements. Search for new ecofriendly, cheap and sustainable TCOs has been a recent research of attraction. Keeping in mind that most solar cells are exposed to natural conditions, the humidity tolerance becomes a determining factor. We report that sensitivity to moisture decreases drastically while the conductivity and optical transparency increases with doping. The reduction of strain and improvement of transport properties results in increased conductivity of Si doped ZnO pellets, tempting us to envisage this material as a probable alternate TCO.

Enhancement of Impedance by Chromium Substitution and Correlation with DC Resistivity in Cobalt Ferrite

Chromium substituted cobalt ferrite with grain size less than the single domain (approx. 70 nm) has been prepared by the sol-gel method. XRD analysis reveals that the samples crystallize to cubic symmetry with spacegroup number 227. Two transition temperatures (TD (approx. 450 K) and TM (approx. 600 K) have been observed from the impedance verses temperature measurement. TD increases with the increase in frequency due to dipole response to the frequency. TM is comparable with the para-ferrimagnetic transition temperature of cobalt ferrite, which is independent of frequency. This result is well supported by the temperature dependent DC conductivity measurement. The modified Debye relaxation could be explained the impedance spectra of CoFe2-xCrxO4. The grain and grain boundary effect on impedance spectroscopy has been observed from Cole-Cole analysis. The ac conductivity follows Arrhenius behavior at different frequencies. All the samples exhibit the negative temperature coefficient of resistance behavior which reveals the semiconducting behavior of the material. The Mott VRH model could explain the DC electrical conductivity. Both ac impedance and DC resistivity are well co-related each other to explain the electron transport properties in Cr substituted cobalt ferrite. The electrical transport properties could be explained by the electron hopping between different metal ions via oxygen in the material.

L shell x-ray production in high-Z elements using 4-6 MeV/u fluorine ions

L shell line and total x-ray production cross sections in 78Pt, 79Au, 82Pb, 83Bi, 90Th, and 92U targets ionized by 4-6 MeV/u fluorine ions were measured. These cross sections are compared with available theories for L shell ionization using single- and multiple-hole fluorescence and the Coster-Kronig yields. The ECPSSR and the ECUSAR theories exhibit good agreement with the measured data, whereas, the FBA theory overestimates them by a factor of two. Although for the F ion charge states q = 6-8 the multiple-hole atomic parameters do not significantly differ from the single-hole values, after an account for the multiple-holes, our data are better in agreement with the ECUSAR than the ECPSSR theory.

Latent class analyisis for reliable measure of inflation expectation in the indian public

The main aim of this paper is to inspect the properties of survey based on households inflation expectations, conducted by Reserve Bank of India. It is theorized that the respondents answers are exaggerated by extreme response bias. Latent class analysis has been hailed as a promising technique for studying measurement errors in surveys, because the model produces estimates of the error rates associated with a given question of the questionnaire. I have identified a model with optimum performance and hence categorize the objective as well as reliable classifiers or otherwise.

Ion-Induced Dipole Interactions and Fragmentation Times : C$α$ -C$β$ Chromophore Bond Dissociation Channel

The fragmentation times corresponding to the loss of the chromophore (C$α$-- C$β$ bond dissociation channel) after photoexcitation at 263 nm have been investigated for several small peptides containing tryptophan or tyrosine. For tryptophan-containing peptides, the aromatic chromophore is lost as an ionic fragment (m/z 130), and the fragmentation time increases with the mass of the neutral fragment. In contrast, for tyrosine-containing peptides the aromatic chromophore is always lost as a neutral fragment (mass = 107 amu) and the fragmentation time is found to be fast (\textless{}20 ns). These different behaviors are explained by the role of the postfragmentation interaction in the complex formed after the C$α$--C$β$ bond cleavage.
