Field dependent magnetization of BiFeO3 in ultrathin La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/BiFeO3 superlattice

We report the observation of field-induced magnetization of BiFeO3 (BFO) in an ultrathin BFO/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) superlattice using polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR). Our PNR results indicate parallel alignment of magnetization across BFO/LSMO interfaces. The study showed an increase in average magnetization on increasing applied magnetic field at 10K. We observed a saturation magnetization of 110 \pm 15 kA/m (~0.8 μB/Fe) for ultrathin BFO layer (~2 unit cell) sandwiched between ultrathin LSMO layers (~ 2 unit cell), which is much higher than the canted moment (0.03 μB/Fe) in the bulk BFO. The macroscopic VSM results on superlattice clearly indicate superparamagnetic behavior typically observed in nanoparticles of manganites.

Study of magnetic iron nitride thin films deposited by high power impulse magnetron sputtering

In this work, we studied phase formation, structural and magnetic properties of iron-nitride (Fe-N) thin films deposited using high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) and direct current magnetron sputtering (dc-MS). The nitrogen partial pressure during deposition was systematically varied both in HiPIMS and dc-MS. Resulting Fe-N films were characterized for their microstructure, magnetic properties and nitrogen concentration. We found that HiPIMS deposited Fe-N films show a globular nanocrystalline microstructure and improved soft magnetic properties. In addition, it was found that the nitrogen reactivity impedes in HiPIMS as compared to dc-MS. Obtained results can be understood in terms of distinct plasma properties of HiPIMS.

Prediction of novel interface-driven spintronic effects

The recently-proposed coupling between the angular momentum density and magnetic moment [A. Raeliarijaona et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 137205 (2013)] is shown here to result in the prediction of (i) novel spin currents generated by an electrical current and (ii) new electrical currents induced by a spin current in systems possessing specific interfaces between two different materials. Some of these spin (electrical) currents can be reversed near the interface by reversing the applied electrical (spin) current. Similarities and differences between these novel spintronic effects and the well-known spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effects are also discussed.

Superconductivity-induced Magnetic Modulation in a Ferromagnet Through an Insulator in LaCaMnO3\SrTiO3\YBa2Cu3O7-δ Hybrid Heterostructures

Coexistence of ferromagnetic and superconducting orders and their interplay in ferromagnet-superconductor heterostructures is a topic of intense research. While it is well known that proximity of a ferromagnet suppresses superconducting order in the superconductor, there exist few studies indicating the proximity of a superconductor suppressing ferromagnetic order in a ferromagnet. Here we demonstrate a rare observation of the suppression of ferromagnetic order in a LaCaMnO3 layer separated from a YBa2Cu3O7-δ layer by a thin insulator (SrTiO3). Polarized neutron reflectivity measurements on LaCaMnO3\SrTiO3\YBa2Cu3O7-δ trilayer deposited on [001] SrTiO3 single crystal substrates shows the emergence of a thin magnetic dead layer in LaCaMnO3 adjacent to the insulating layer below its superconducting transition temperature of YBa2Cu3O7-δ. Further, the magnetic dead layer grows in thickness when the insulating layer is made thinner. This indicates a possible tunneling of the superconducting order-parameter through the insulating SrTiO3 inducing modulation of magnetization in LaCaMnO3.

Manipulation of the magnetic order parameter and the metal-insulator-transition of a manganite thin film with applied elastic stress

We measured the temperature dependence of the saturation magnetization (Ms) of a (La1-xPrx)1-yCayMnO3 (x ~ 0.60, y ~ 0.33) film as a function of applied bending stress. Stress producing a compressive strain of -0.01% along the magnetic easy axis increased the Curie temperature by ~6 K and the metal-insulator-transition by ~4 K. Regardless of whether or not stress is applied to the film, magnetic ordering occurs at temperatures significantly higher than the metal-insulator-transition temperature. The magnetization of the sample at the temperature of the metal-insulator-transition is approximately the site percolation threshold for a two-dimensional spin lattice.

Images of metallic and insulating domains on the surface of a (La0.4Pr0.6)0.67Ca0.33MnO3 film

Using conductive atomic force microscopy, we observed non-uniform distributions of metallic and insulating domains on the surface of a single crystalline (La0.4Pr0.6)0.67Ca0.33MnO3 film grown on a (110) NdGaO3 substrate. The electronic properties of the surface exhibit thermal hysteresis. The hysteresis is similar to that of the transport and magnetism of the film bulk.

Measurement of the coupling between applied stress and magnetism in a manganite thin film

We measured the magnetization depth profile of a (La1-xPrx)1-yCayMnO3 (x = 0.60\pm0.04, y = 0.20\pm0.03) film as a function of applied bending stress using polarized neutron reflectometry. From these measurements we obtained a coupling coefficient relating strain to the depth dependent magnetization. We found application of compressive (tensile) bending stress along the magnetic easy axis increases (decreases) the magnetization of the film.

Magnetic non-uniformity and thermal hysteresis of magnetism in a manganite thin film

We measured the chemical and magnetic depth profiles of a single crystalline (La$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$)$_{1-y}$Ca$_y$MnO$_{3-δ}$ (x = 0.52\pm0.05, y = 0.23\pm0.04, δ = 0.14\pm0.10) film grown on a NdGaO3 substrate using x-ray reflectometry, electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy and polarized neutron reflectometry. Our data indicate that the film exhibits coexistence of different magnetic phases as a function of depth. The magnetic depth profile is correlated with a variation of chemical composition with depth. The thermal hysteresis of ferromagnetic order in the film suggests a first order ferromagnetic transition at low temperatures.

A non-degenerate optical parametric oscillator as a high-flux source for quantum lithography

We investigate the use of a non-degenerate parametric oscillator (NDPO) as a source for quantum lithography, for which the light can have high-flux and strong non-classical features. This builds on the proposal of Boto, et al. [A. N. Boto, et al., PRL (85), 2733 (2000)], for etching simple patterns on multi-photon absorbing materials with sub-Rayleigh resolution, using special two-mode entangled states of light. An NDPO has two outgoing modes differentiated by polarization or direction of propagation, but sharing the same optical frequency. We derive analytical expressions for the multi-photon absorption rates when the NDPO is operated below, near, and above its threshold. The resulting interference patterns are characterized by an effective wavelength half that for the illuminating modes. We compare our results with those for the case of a high-gain optical amplifier source, and discuss the relative merit of the NDPO.

Diffuse neutron reflectivity and AFM study of interface morphology of an electro-deposited Ni/Cu film

We present a detailed study of the interface morphology of an electro-deposited (ED) Ni/Cu bilayer film by using off-specular (diffuse) neutron reflectivity technique and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The Ni/Cu bilayer has been electro-deposited on seed layers of Ti/Cu. These two seed layers were deposited by magnetron sputtering. The depth profile of density in the sample has been obtained from specular neutron reflectivity data. AFM image of the air-film interface shows that the surface is covered by globular islands of different sizes. The AFM height distribution of the surface clearly shows two peaks [Fig. 3] and the relief structure (islands) on the surface in the film can be treated as a quasi-two-level random rough surface structure. We have demonstrated that the detailed morphology of air-film interfaces, the quasi-two level surface structure as well as morphology of the buried interfaces can be obtained from off-specular neutron reflectivity data. We have shown from AFM and off-specular neutron reflectivity data that the morphologies of electro-deposited surface is distinctly different from that of sputter-deposited interface in this sample. To the best of our knowledge this is the first attempt to microscopically quantify the differences in morphologies of metallic interfaces deposited by two different techniques viz. electro-deposition and sputtering.

Plasmonic Resonances and Electromagnetic Forces Between Coupled Silver Nanowires

We compute the electromagnetic response and corresponding forces between two silver nanowires. The wires are illuminated by a plane wave which has the electric field vector perpendicular to the axis of the wires, insuring that plasmonic resonances can be excited. We consider a nontrivial square cross section geometry that has dimensions on the order of $0.1 λ$, where $λ$ is the wavelength of the incident electromagnetic field. We find that due to the plasmonic resonance, there occurs great enhancement of the direct and mutual electromagnetic forces that are exerted on the nanowires. The Lippman-Schwinger volume integral equation is implemented to obtain solutions to Maxwell's equations for various $λ$ and separation distances between wires. The forces are computed using Maxwell's stress tensor and numerical results are shown for both on and off resonant conditions.
