Black Hole Parameter Estimation from Its Shadow

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a global submillimeter wavelength very long baseline interferometry array, unveiled event-horizon-scale images of the supermassive black hole M87* as an asymmetric bright emission ring with a diameter of $ 42 \pm 3\; μ$as, and it is consistent with the shadow of a Kerr black hole of general relativity. A Kerr black hole is also a solution of some alternative theories of gravity, while several modified theories of gravity admit non-Kerr black holes. While earlier estimates for the M87* black hole mass, depending on the method used, fall in the range $ \approx 3\times 10^9 M_\odot- 7 \times 10^9 $$ M_\odot $, the EHT data indicated a mass for the M87* black hole of $(6.5 \pm 0.7) \times 10^9 M_\odot $. This offers another promising tool to estimate black hole parameters and to probe theories of gravity in its most extreme region near the event horizon. The important question arises: Is it possible by a simple technique to estimate black hole parameters from its shadow, for arbitrary models? In this paper, we present observables, expressed in terms of ordinary integrals, characterizing a haphazard shadow shape to estimate the parameters associated with black holes, and then illustrate its relevance to four different models: Kerr, Kerr$-$Newman, and two rotating regular models. Our method is robust, accurate, and consistent with the results obtained from existing formalism, and it is applicable to more general shadow shapes that may not be circular due to noisy data.

Gravitational deflection of light and shadow cast by rotating Kalb-Ramond black holes

The nonminimal coupling of the nonzero vacuum expectation value of the self-interacting antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond field with gravity leads to a power-law hairy black hole having a parameter $s$, which encompasses the Reissner$-$Nordstrom black hole ($s=1$). We obtain the axially symmetric counterpart of this hairy solution, namely, the rotating Kalb-Ramond black hole, which encompasses, as special cases, Kerr ($s=0$) and Kerr-Newman ($s=1$) black holes. Interestingly, for a set of parameters ($M, a$, and $Γ$), there exists an extremal value of the Kalb-Ramond parameter ($s=s_{e}$), which corresponds to an extremal black hole with degenerate horizons, while for $s s_{e}$. We find that the extremal value $s_e$ is also influenced by these parameters. The black hole shadow size decreases monotonically and the shape gets more distorted with an increasing $s$; in turn, shadows of rotating Kalb-Ramond black holes are smaller and more distorted than the corresponding Kerr black hole shadows. We investigate the effect of the Kalb-Ramond field on the rotating black hole spacetime geometry and analytically deduced corrections to the light deflection angle from the Kerr and Schwarzschild black hole values. The deflection angle for Sgr A* and the shadow caused by the supermassive black hole M87* are included and compared with analogous results of Kerr black holes. The inferred circularity deviation $ΔC\leq 0.10$ for the M87* black hole merely constrains the Kalb-Ramond field parameter, whereas shadow angular diameter $θ_d=42\pm 3\, μ$as, within the $1σ$ region, places bounds $Γ\leq 0.09205$ for $s=1$ and $Γ\leq 0.02178$ for $s=3$.

Hayward black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

The Hayward metric is a spherically symmetric charged regular black holes, a modification of the Reisnner-Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m black holes of Einstein's equations coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics. We consider Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity (EGB) coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics to present an exact five dimension ($5D$) Hayward black holes with a regular center, having inner (Cauchy) and outer (event) horizons which go over to Boulware-Desser black holes when the charge is switched off ($e=0$). The presence of charge $e$ leads the modification in thermodynamical quantities, and it has also been shown that the Hawking-Page like phase transition can be achieved. The specific heat shows divergence at the horizon radius $r=r_C$ (critical radius), where the temperature has a maximum. Our result in the limit, $e\to0$, reduces vis-a-vis to the $5D$ Boulware-Desser solutions.

Five dimensional rotating regular black holes and shadow

We present an exact five-dimensional ($5D$) rotating regular black hole metric, with a deviation parameter $k\geq 0$, that interpolates between the $5D$ Kerr black hole ($k=0$) and $5D$ Kerr-Newman ($r \gg k$). This $5D$ rotating regular black hole is an exact solution of general relativity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics. Interestingly, for a given value of parameter $k$ there exits a critical angular momentum $a=a_E$ which corresponds to extremal rotating regular black hole with degenerate horizons, while for $a<a_E$, one has non-extremal rotating regular black hole with outer and inner horizons. Owing to the correction factor ($e^{-k/r^2}$), which is motivated by the quantum arguments, the ergoregion and black hole shadow are modified.

Shadow cast and deflection of light by charged rotating regular black holes

We discuss the horizon properties, shadow cast, and the weak gravitational lensing of charged rotating regular black holes, which in addition to mass ($M$) and rotation parameter ($a$) have an electric charge ($Q$) and magnetic charge ($g$). The considered regular black holes are the generalization of the Kerr ($Q=g=0$) and Kerr-Newman ($g=0$) black holes. Interestingly, for a given parameter set, the apparent size of the shadow monotonically decreases and the shadow gets more distorted with increasing charge parameter $Q$. We put constraints on the black hole parameters with the aid of recent M87* shadow observation. The conserved quantities associated with the rotating regular black holes are calculated and also a brief description of the weak gravitational lensing using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem is presented. Interestingly, the deflection angle decreases with the charge of the black hole. Our results \textit{vis-à-vis} go over to the Kerr and Kerr-Newman black holes in the appropriate limits.

Black string surrounded by a static anisotropic quintessence fluid

A black string is a solution of the four-dimensional general relativity in cylindrical symmetric anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime pioneered by Lemos [6]. We obtain an exact rotating black string surrounded by quintessence matter in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime and analyze its properties. The solution has an additional parameter $N_q$ due to background quintessence matter and it also depends on quintessence state parameter $w_q$. Our rotating solution encompasses the Lemos black string \cite{Lemos:1994xp}, which can be recovered in the absence of background matter ($N_q=0$). The special case of rotating charged black string ($w_q=1/3$) has both Cauchy and event horizons. We find that thermodynamic quantities mass, temperature, entropy and heat capacity get corrected due to quintessence background. The counterterm method is utilized to calculate the associated conserved quantities to conclude that the first law of thermodynamics is satisfied. The cloud of strings background ($w_q= -1/3$) has been included as a special case.

Bardeen-like regular black holes in $5D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We find an exact spherically symmetric regular Bardeen-like solutions by considering the coupling between Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory and nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) in five-dimensional spacetime. These solutions, with an additional parameter $g$ apart from the mass $M$, represent black holes with Cauchy and event horizons, extremal black holes with degenerate horizons or no black holes in the absence of the horizons, and encompasses as a special case Boulware-Deser black holes which can be recovered in the absence of magnetic charge ($g=0$). Owing to the NED corrected black hole, the thermodynamic quantities have also been modified and we have obtained exact analytical expressions for the thermodynamical quantities such the Hawking temperature $T_+$, the entropy $S_+$, the specific heat $C_+$, and the Gibbs free energy $F_+$. The heat capacity diverges at a critical radius $r=r_C$, where incidentally the temperature has a maximum, and the Hawking-Page transitions even in absence of the cosmological term. The thermal evaporation process leads to eternal remnants for sufficiently small black holes and evaporates to a thermodynamic stable extremel black hole remnants with vanishing temperature. The heat capacity becomes positive $C_+ > 0$ for $r_+ < r_C$ allowing black hole to become thermodynamically stable, in addition the smaller black holes are globally stable with positive heat capacity $C_+ > 0$ and negative free energy $F_+<0$. The entropy $ S $ of a 5D Bardeen black hole is not longer a quarter of the horizon area $A$, i.e., $S \neq A/4$.

Rotating black hole in Rastall theory

Rotating black hole solutions in theories of modified gravity are important as they offer an arena to test these theories through astrophysical observation. The non-rotating black hole can be hardly tested since the black hole spin is very important in any astrophysical process. We present rotating counterpart of a recently obtained spherically symmetric exact black hole solution surrounded by perfect fluid in the context of Rastall theory, viz, rotating Rastall black hole that generalize the Kerr-Newman black hole solution. In turn, we analyze the specific cases of the Kerr-Newman black holes surrounded by matter like dust and quintessence fields. Interestingly, for a set of parameters and a chosen surrounding field, there exists a critical rotation parameter ($a=a_{E}$), which corresponds to an extremal black hole with degenerate horizons, while for $a a_{E}$ with value $a_E$ is also influenced by these parameters. We also discuss the thermodynamical quantities associated with rotating Rastall black hole, and analyze the particle motion with the behavior of effective potential.

$D$-dimensional Bardeen-AdS black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory

We present a $D$-dimensional Bardeen like Anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole solution in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity, \textit{viz}., Bardeen-EGB-AdS black holes. The Bardeen-EGB-AdS black hole has an additional parameter due to charge ($e$), apart from mass ($M$) and Gauss-Bonnet parameter ($α$). Interestingly, for each value of $α$, there exist a critical $e = e_E$ which corresponds to an extremal regular black hole with degenerate horizons, while for $e< e_E$, it describes non-extremal black hole with two horizons. Despite the complicated solution, the thermodynamical quantities, like temperature ($T$), specific heat($C$) and entropy ($S$) associated with the black hole are obtained exactly. It turns out that the heat capacity diverges at critical horizon radius $r_+ = r_C$, where the temperature attains maximum value and the Hawking-Page transition is achievable. Thus, we have an exact $D$-dimensional regular black holes, when evaporates lead to a thermodynamical stable remnant.

Noncommutative geometry inspired Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes

Low energy limits of a string theory suggest that the gravity action should include quadratic and higher-order curvature terms, in the form of dimensionally continued Gauss-Bonnet densities. Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet is a natural extension of the general relativity to higher dimensions in which the first and second-order terms correspond, respectively, to general relativity and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We obtain five-dimensional ($5D$) black hole solutions, inspired by a noncommutative geometry, with a static spherically symmetric, Gaussian mass distribution as a source both in the general relativity and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity cases, and we also analyze their thermodynamical properties. Owing to the noncommutative corrected black hole, the thermodynamic quantities have also been modified, and phase transition is shown to be achievable. The phase transitions for the thermodynamic stability, in both the theories, are characterized by a discontinuity in the specific heat at $r_+=r_C$, with the stable (unstable) branch for $r < (>)\, r_C$. The metric of the noncommutative inspired black holes smoothly goes over to the Boulware-Deser solution at large distance. The paper has been appended with a calculation of black hole mass using holographic renormalization.

Shadows of rotating five-dimensional charged EMCS black holes

Higher dimensional theories admit astrophysical objects like supermassive black holes, which are rather different from standard ones, and their gravitational lensing features deviate from general relativity. It is well known that a black hole shadow is a dark region due to the falling geodesics of photons into the black hole and, if detected, a black hole shadow could be used to determine which theory of gravity is consistent with observations. Measurements of the shadow sizes around the black holes can help to evaluate various parameters of the black hole metric. We study the shapes of the shadow cast by the rotating five-dimensional charged Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons (EMCS) black holes, which is characterized by the four parameters, i.e., mass, two spins, and charge, in which the spin parameters are set equal. We integrate the null geodesic equations and derive an analytical formula for the shadow of the five-dimensional EMCS black hole, in turn, to show that size of black hole shadow is affected due to charge as well as spin. The shadow is a dark zone covered by a deformed circle, and the size of the shadow decreases with an increase in the charge $q$ when compared with the five-dimensional Myers-Perry black hole. Interestingly, the distortion increases with charge $q$. The effect of these parameters on the shape and size of the naked singularity shadow of five-dimensional EMCS black hole is also discussed.

Particle acceleration of two general particles in the background of rotating Ayón-Beato-García black holes

The rotating Ayón-Beato-García (ABG) black holes, apart from mass ($M$) and rotation parameter ($a$), has an additional charge $Q$ and encompassed the Kerr black hole as particular case when $Q=0$. We demonstrate the ergoregions of rotating ABG black holes depend on both rotation parameter $a$ and charge $Q$, and the area of the ergoregions increases with increase in the values of $Q$, when compared with the Kerr black hole and the extremal regular black hole changes with the value of $Q$. Ban{ã}dos, Silk and West (BSW) demonstrated that an extremal Kerr black hole can act as a particle accelerator with arbitrarily high center-of-mass energy ($E_{CM}$) when the collision takes place at any point in the ergoregion and thus in turn provides a suitable framework for Plank-scale physics. We study the collision of two general particles with different masses falling freely from rest in the equatorial plane of a rotating ABG black hole near the event horizon and find that the $E_{CM}$ of two colliding particles is arbitrarily high when one of the particles take a critical value of angular momentum in the extremal case, whereas for nonextremal case $E_{CM}$ for a pair of colliding particles is generically divergent at the inner horizon, and explicitly studying the effect of charge $Q$ on the $E_{CM}$ for ABG black hole. In particular, our results in the limit $Q\rightarrow 0$ reduce exactly to \emph{vis-$\grave{a}$-vis} those of the Kerr black hole.

Lovelock black holes surrounded by quintessence

Lovelock gravity consisting of the dimensionally continued Euler densities is a natural generalization of general relativity to higher dimensions such that equations of motion are still second order, and the theory is free of ghosts. A scalar field with a positive potential that yields an accelerating universe has been termed quintessence. We present exact black hole solutions in $D$-dimensional Lovelock gravity surrounded by quintessence matter and also perform a detailed thermodynamical study. Further, we find that the mass, entropy, and temperature of the black hole are corrected due to the quintessence background. In particular, we find that phase transition occurs with divergence of heat capacity at the critical horizon radius, and that specific heat becomes positive for $r_h<r_c$ allowing the black hole to become thermodynamically stable.

Accretion onto a noncommutative geometry inspired black hole

The spherically symmetric accretion onto a noncommutative (NC) inspired Schwarzschild black hole is treated for a polytropic fluid. The critical accretion rate $\dot{M}$, sonic speed $a_s$ and other flow parameters are generalised for the NC inspired black hole and compared with the results obtained for the standard Schwarzschild black holes. We also derive explicit expressions for gas compression ratios and temperature profiles below the accretion radius and at the event horizon. This analysis is a generalisation of Michel's solution to the NC geometry. Owing to the NC corrected black hole, the accretion flow parameters have also been modified. It turns out that $ \dot{M} \approx {M^2}$ is still achievable but $r_s$ seems to be substantially decreased due to NC effects, that in turn does affect the accretion process.

Quintessence background for $5D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes

As we know that the Lovelock theory is an extension of the general relativity to the higher-dimensions, in this theory the first and the second order terms correspond to the general relativity and the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, respectively. We obtain a $5D$ black hole solution in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity surrounded by the quintessence matter, and also analyze their thermodynamical properties. Owing to the quintessence corrected black hole, the thermodynamic quantities have also been corrected except for the black hole entropy, and phase transition is achievable. The phase transition for the thermodynamic stability, is characterized by a discontinuity in the specific heat at $r=r_C$, with the stable (unstable) branch for $r < (>) r_C$.

Noncommutative geometry inspired rotating black string

Noncommutativity is an idea dating back to the early times of Quantum Mechanics and that string theory induced noncommutative (NC) geometry which provides an effective framework to study short distance spacetime dynamics. Also, string theory, a candidate for a consistent quantum theory of gravity, admits a variety of classical black hole solutions including black strings. In this paper, we study a NC geometry inspired rotating black string to cylindrical spacetime with a source given by a Gaussian distribution of mass. The resulting metric is a regular, i.e. curvature-singularity free, rotating black string, that in large $r$ limit interpolates Lemos \cite{lemos96} black string. Thermodynamical properties of the black strings are also investigated and exact expressions for the temperature, the entropy and the heat capacity are obtained. Owing to the NC correction in the solution, the thermodynamic quantities have been also modified and that the NC geometry inspired black string is always thermodynamically stable.

Shadow of Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black holes

We study the shadow cast by the H$D$ Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole, and analytically calculate the influence of extra dimensions on the shadow of a black hole. A black hole casts a shadow as an optical appearance because of its strong gravitational field which is known to be a dark zone covered by a circle for a Schwarzschild black hole. We demonstrate that the null geodesic equation can be integrated by Hamilton-Jacobi approach, which enables us to investigate the shadow cast by the H$D$ Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black holes. Interestingly, it turns out that, for fixed values of the mass parameter, the shadow in H$D$ spacetimes are smaller when compared with 4$D$ Schwarzschild black hole. Further, the shadows of H$D$ Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black holes are concentric circles with a radius of the circle decreases with increase in $D$. We visualize the photon regions and the shadows in various dimensions for different values of the parameters, and the energy emission rates are is also investigated. Our results, in the limit $D=4$, reduced exactly to \emph{vis-$\grave{a}$-vis} Schwarzschild black hole case.

Black String in dRGT Massive Gravity

We present a cylindrically symmetric solution, both charged and uncharged, which is known as a black string solution to the nonlinear ghost-free massive gravity found by de Rham, Gabadadze, and Tolley (dRGT). This "dRGT black string" can be thought of as a generalization of the black string solution found by Lemos \cite{1}. Moreover, the dRGT black string solution also include other classes of black string solution such as the monopole-black string ones since the graviton mass contributes to the global monopole term as well as the cosmological constant term. To investigate the solution, we compute mass, temperature, and entropy of the dRGT black string. We found that the existence of the graviton mass drastically affects the thermodynamics of the black string. Furthermore, the Hawking-Page phase transition is found to be possible for the dRGT black string as well as the charged dRGT black string. In terms of their stability, the dRGT black string solution is thermodynamically stable for $r>r_c$ with negative thermodynamical potential and positive heat capacity while it is unstable for $r<r_c$ where the potential is positive.
