Shapes of rotating nonsingular black hole shadows

It is believed that curvature singularities are a creation of general relativity and hence, in the absence of a quantum gravity, models of nonsingular black holes have received significant attention. We study the shadow (apparent shape), an optical appearance because of its strong gravitational field, cast by a nonsingular black hole which is characterized by three parameters, i.e., mass ($M$), spin ($a$), and a deviation parameter ($k$). The nonsingular black hole under consideration, is a generalization of the Kerr black hole {that} can be recognized asymptotically ($r>>k, k>0$) explicitly as the Kerr-Newman black hole, and in the limit $k \rightarrow 0$ as the Kerr black hole. It turns out that the shadow of a nonsingular black hole is a dark zone covered by {a} deformed circle. Interestingly, it is seen that the shadow of a black hole is affected due to the parameter $k$. Indeed, for a given $a$, the size of a shadow reduces as the parameter $k$ increases and the shadow becomes more distorted as we increase the value of the parameter $k$ when compared with the analogous Kerr black hole shadow. We also investigate, in detail, how the ergoregion of a black hole is changed due to the deviation parameter $k$.

Collision of two general particles around a rotating regular Hayward's black holes

The rotating regular Hayward's spacetime, apart from mass ($M$) and angular momentum ($a$), has an additional deviation parameter ($g$) due to the magnetic charge, which generalizes the Kerr black hole when $g\neq0$, and for $g=0$, it goes over to the Kerr black hole. We analyze how the ergoregion is affected by the parameter $g$ to show that the area of ergoregion increases with increasing values of $g$. Further, for each $g$, there exist critical $a_E$, which corresponds to a regular extremal black hole with degenerate horizons $r=r^E_H$, and $a_E$ decrease whereas $r^E_H$ increases with an increase in the parameter $g$. Ban{ã}dos, Silk and West (BSW) demonstrated that the extremal Kerr black hole can act as a particle accelerator with arbitrarily high center-of-mass energy ($E_{CM}$) when the collision of two particles takes place near the horizon. We study the BSW process for two particles with different rest masses, $m_1$ and $m_2$, moving in the equatorial plane of extremal Hayward's black hole for different values of $g$, to show that $E_{CM}$ of two colliding particles is arbitrarily high when one of the particles takes a critical value of angular momentum. For a nonextremal case, there always exist a finite upper bound for the $E_{CM}$, which increases with the deviation parameter $g$. Our results, in the limit $g \rightarrow 0$, reduces to that of the Kerr black hole.

Shadow of rotating regular black holes

We study the shadows cast by the different types of rotating regular black holes viz. Ayón-Beato-García {(ABG)}, Hayward, and Bardeen. These black holes have in addition to the total mass ($M$) and rotation parameter ($a$), different parameters as electric charge ($Q$), deviation parameter ($g$), and magnetic charge ($g_{*}$), respectively. Interestingly, the size of the shadow is affected by these parameters in addition to the rotation parameter. We found that the radius of the shadow in each case decreases monotonically and the distortion parameter increases when the value of these parameters increase. A comparison with the standard Kerr case is also investigated. We have also studied the influence of the plasma environment around regular black holes to discuss its shadow. The presence of the plasma affects the apparent size of the regular black hole's shadow to be increased due to two effects (i) gravitational redshift of the photons and (ii) radial dependence of plasma density.

Rotating black hole and quintessence

We discuss spherically symmetric exact solutions of the Einstein equations for quintessential matter surrounding a black hole, which has an additional parameter ($ω$) due to the quintessential matter, apart from the mass ($M$). In turn, we employ the Newman\(-\)Janis complex transformation to this spherical quintessence black hole solution and present a rotating counterpart that is identified, for $α=-e^2 \neq 0$ and $ω=1/3$, exactly as the Kerr\(-\)Newman black hole, and as the Kerr black hole when $α=0$. Interestingly, for a given value of parameter $ω$, there exists a critical rotation parameter ($a=a_{E}$), which corresponds to an extremal black hole with degenerate horizons, while for $a a_{E}$. We find that the extremal value $a_E$ is also influenced by the parameter $ω$ and so is the ergoregion.

A class of black holes in dRGT massive gravity and their thermodynamical properties

We present exact spherical black hole solutions in de Rham, Gabadadze and Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity for a generic choice of the parameters in the theory, and also discuss the thermodynamical and phase structure of the black hole in both the grand canonical and canonical ensembles (for charged case). It turns out that the dGRT black hole solutions includes the known solutions to the Einstein field equations, such as, the monopole-de Sitter-Schwarzschild ones with the coefficients for the third and fourth terms in the potential and the graviton mass in massive gravity naturally generates the cosmological constant and the global monopole term. Furthermore, we compute the mass, temperature, and entropy of dGRT black hole solutions and also perform thermodynamical stability. It turns out that the presence of the graviton mass completely changes the black hole thermodynamics, and it can provide the Hawking-Page phase transition which is also true for the obtained charged black holes. Interestingly, the entropy of a black hole is unaffected and still obeys area law. In particular, our results, in the limit $m_g \rightarrow 0$, reduced exactly to \emph{vis-$\grave{a}$-vis} the general relativity results.

Lovelock black hole thermodynamics in a string cloud model

The Lovelock theory is an extension of general relativity to higher dimensions. We study the Lovelock black hole for a string cloud model in arbitrary dimensional spacetime, and in turn also analyze its thermodynamical properties. Indeed, we compute the mass, temperature and entropy of the black hole and also perform a thermodynamical stability analysis. The phase structure suggests that the Hawking-Page phase transition is achievable. It turns out that the presence of the Lovelock terms and/or background string cloud completely changes the black hole thermodynamics. Interestingly, the entropy of a black hole is unaffected due to a background string cloud, but has a correction term due to Lovelock gravity.

Horizon structure of rotating Bardeen black hole and particle acceleration

We investigate the horizon structure and ergosphere in a rotating Bardeen regular black hole, which has an additional parameter ($g$) due to magnetic charge, apart from mass ($M$) and rotation parameter ($a$). Interestingly, for each value of parameter $g$, there exist a critical rotation parameter ($a=a_{E}$), which corresponds to an extremal black hole with degenerate horizons, while for $a a_{E}$. We find that the extremal value $a_E$ is also influenced by the parameter $g$ and so is the ergosphere. While the value of $a_E$ remarkably decreases when compared with the Kerr black hole, the ergosphere becomes more thick with increase in $g$. We also study collision of two equal mass particle near the horizon of this black hole, and explicitly bring out the effect of parameter $g$. The center-of-mass energy ($E_{CM}$) not only depends on rotation parameter $a$, but also on parameter $g$. It is demonstrated that the $E_{CM}$ could be arbitrary high in the extremal cases when one of the colliding particle has critical angular momentum, thereby suggesting that the rotating Bardeen regular black hole can act as a particle accelerator.

A nonsingular rotating black hole

The spacetime singularities in classical general relativity are inevitable, which are also predicated by the celebrated singularity theorems. However, it is general belief that singularities do not exist in the nature and they are the limitations of the general relativity. In the absence of a well defined quantum gravity, models of regular black holes have been studied. We employ probability distribution inspired mass function $m(r)$ to replace Kerr black hole mass $M$ to present a nonsingular rotating black hole that is identified asymptotically ($r \gg k$, $k>0$ constant) exactly as the Kerr-Newman black hole, and as the Kerr black hole when $k=0$. The radiating counterpart renders a nonsingular generalization of Carmeli's spacetime as well as Vaidya's spacetime, in the appropriate limits. The exponential correction factor changing the geometry of the classic black hole to remove curvature singularity can be also motivated by the quantum arguments. The regular rotating spacetime can also be understood as a black hole of general relativity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics.

Horizon structure of rotating Einstein-Born-Infeld black holes and shadow

We investigate the horizon structure of the rotating Einstein-Born-Infeld solution which goes over to the Einstein-Maxwell's Kerr-Newman solution as the Born-Infeld parameter goes to infinity ($β\rightarrow \infty$). We find that for a given $β$, mass $M$ and charge $Q$, there exist critical spinning parameter $a_{E}$ and $r_{H}^{E}$, which corresponds to an extremal Einstein-Born-Infeld black hole with degenerate horizons, and $a_{E}$ decreases and $r_{H}^{E}$ increases with increase in the Born-Infeld parameter $β$. While $a<a_{E}$ describe a non-extremal Einstein-Born-Infeld black hole with outer and inner horizons. Similarly, the effect of $β$ on infinite redshift surface and in turn on ergoregion is also included. It is well known that a black hole can cast a shadow as an optical appearance due to its strong gravitational field. We also investigate the shadow cast by the non-rotating ($a=0$) Einstein-Born-Infeld black hole and demonstrate that the null geodesic equations can be integrated that allows us to investigate the shadow cast by a black hole which is found to be a dark zone covered by a circle. Interestingly, the shadow of the Einstein-Born-Infeld black hole is slightly smaller than for the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. F urther, the shadow is concentric circles whose radius decreases with increase in value of parameter $β$.

Lovelock black holes in a string cloud background

We present an exact static, spherically symmetric black hole solution to the third order Lovelock gravity with a string cloud background in seven dimensions for the special case when the second and third order Lovelock coefficients are related via $\tildeα^2_2=3\tildeα_3\;(\equivα^2)$. Further, we examine thermodynamic properties of this black hole to obtain exact expressions for mass, temperature, entropy and also perform the thermodynamic stability analysis. We see that a string cloud background makes a profound influence on horizon structure, thermodynamic properties and the stability of black holes. Interestingly the entropy of the black hole is unaffected due to a string cloud background. However, the critical solution for thermodynamic stability is being affected by a string cloud background.

Rotating Hayward's regular black hole as particle accelerator

Recently, Banãdos, Silk and West (BSW) demonstrated that the extremal Kerr black hole can act as a particle accelerator with arbitrarily high center-of-mass energy ($E_{CM}$) when the collision takes place near the horizon. The rotating Hayward's regular black hole, apart from Mass ($M$) and angular momentum ($a$), has a new parameter $g$ ($g>0$ is a constant) that provides a deviation from the Kerr black hole. We demonstrate that for each $g$, with $M=1$, there exist critical $a_{E}$ and $r_{H}^{E}$, which corresponds to a regular extremal black hole with degenerate horizon, and $a_{E}$ decreases and $r_{H}^{E}$ increases with increase in $g$. While $a<a_{E}$ describe a regular non-extremal black hole with outer and inner horizons. We apply BSW process to the rotating Hayward's regular black hole, for different $g$, and demonstrate numerically that $E_{CM}$ diverges in the vicinity of the horizon for the extremal cases, thereby suggesting that a rotating regular black hole can also act as a particle accelerator and thus in turn may provide a suitable framework for Plank-scale physics. For a non-extremal case, there always exist a finite upper bound of $E_{CM}$, which increases with deviation parameter $g$.

Rotating Ayón-Beato-García black hole as a particle accelerator

We study the collision of two particles with equal masses moving in the equatorial plane near horizon of the rotating regular Ayón-Beato-García (ABG) black hole (BH) and calculate the center-of-mass (CM) energy for the colliding particles for both extremal and non-extremal cases. It turns out that CM energy depends not only on rotation parameter $a$ but also on charge $Q$. Particularly for the extremal rotating regular ABG BH, CM energy of two colliding particles could be arbitrarily high for critical angular momentum of particles. Furthermore, we also show that, for a non-extremal BH, there exist a finite upper limit of CM energy, which changes with charge $Q$. A comparison, with Kerr and Kerr-Newman black holes, is included.

Radiating Kerr-like regular black hole

We derive a radiating regular rotating black hole solution, radiating Kerr-like regular black hole solution. We achieve this by starting from the Hayward regular black hole solution via a complex transformation suggested by Newman-Janis. The radiating Kerr metric, the Kerr-like regular black hole and the standard Kerr metric are regained in the appropriate limits. The structure of the horizon-like surfaces are also determined.

Collapsing spherical stars in f(R) gravity

We perform a careful investigation of the problem of physically realistic gravitational collapse of massive stars in f(R)-gravity. We show that the extra matching conditions that arise in the modified gravity imposes strong constraints on the stellar structure and thermodynamic properties. In our opinion these constraints are unphysical. We prove that no homogeneous stars with non-constant Ricci scalar can be matched smoothly with a static exterior for any nonlinear function f(R). Therefore, these extra constraints make classes of physically realistic collapse scenarios in general relativity, non-admissible in these theories. We also find an exact solution for an inhomogeneous collapsing star in the Starobinski model that obeys all the energy and matching conditions. However, we argue that such solutions are fine-tuned and unstable to matter perturbations. Possible consequences on black hole physics and the cosmic censorship conjecture are also discussed.

Cloud of strings for radiating black holes in Lovelock gravity

We present exact spherically symmetric null dust solutions in the third order Lovelock gravity with a string cloud background in arbitrary $N$ dimensions,. This represents radiating black holes and generalizes the well known Vaidya solution to Lovelock gravity with a string cloud in the background. We also discuss the energy conditions and horizon structures, and explicitly bring out the effect of the string clouds on the horizon structure of black hole solutions for the higher dimensional general relativity and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theories. It turns out that the presence of the coupling constant of the Gauss-Bonnet terms and/or background string clouds completely changes the structure of the horizon and this may lead to a naked singularity. We recover known spherically symmetric radiating models as well as static black holes in the appropriate limits.

Accretion onto a black hole in a string cloud background

We examine the accretion process onto the black hole with a string cloud background, where the horizon of the black hole has an enlarged radius $r_H=2 M/(1-α)$, due to the string cloud parameter $α\; (0 \leq α< 1)$. The problem of stationary, spherically symmetric accretion of a polytropic fluid is analysed to obtain an analytic solution for such a perturbation. Generalised expressions for the accretion rate $\dot{M}$, critical radius $r_s$, and other flow parameters are found. The accretion rate $\dot{M}$ is an explicit function of the black hole mass $M$, as well as the gas boundary conditions and the string cloud parameter $α$. We also find the gas compression ratios and temperature profiles below the accretion radius and at the event horizon. It is shown that the mass accretion rate, for both the relativistic and the non-relativistic fluid by a black hole in the string cloud model, increases with increase in $α$.

Clouds of strings in third-order Lovelock gravity

Lovelock theory is a natural extension of the Einstein theory of general relativity to higher dimensions in which the first and second orders correspond, respectively, to general relativity and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We present exact black hole solutions of $D\geq 4$-dimensional spacetime for first-, second-, and third-order Lovelock gravities in a string cloud background. Further, we compute the mass, temperature, and entropy of black hole solutions for the higher-dimensional general relativity and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theories and also perform thermodynamic stability of black holes. It turns out that the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term and/or background string cloud completely changes the black hole thermodynamics. Interestingly, the entropy of a black hole is unaffected due to a background string cloud. We rediscover several known spherically symmetric black hole solutions in the appropriate limits.

Shadow of five-dimensional rotating Myers-Perry black hole

A black hole casts a shadow as an optical appearance because of its strong gravitational field. We study the shadow cast by the five-dimensional Myers-Perry black hole with equal rotation parameters. We demonstrate that the null geodesic equations can be integrated that allows us to investigate the shadow cast by a black hole. The shadow of a black hole is found to be a dark zone covered by deformed circle. Interestingly, the shapes of the black hole shadow are more distorted and size decreases for larger black hole spins. Interestingly, it turns out that, for fixed values of rotation parameter, the shadow is slightly smaller and less deformed than for its four-dimensional Kerr black counterpart. Further, the shadow of the five-dimensional Kerr black hole is concentric deformed circles. The effect of rotation parameter on the shape and size of a naked singularity shadow is also analyzed.
