1/2-BPS vortex strings in $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric ${\rm U}(1)^N$ gauge theories

Strings in $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric ${\rm U}(1)^N$ gauge theories with $N$ hypermultiplets are studied in the generic setting of an arbitrary Fayet-Iliopoulos triplet of parameters for each gauge group and an invertible charge matrix. Although the string tension is generically of a square-root form, it turns out that all existing BPS (Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield) solutions have a tension which is linear in the magnetic fluxes, which in turn are linearly related to the winding numbers. The main result is a series of theorems establishing three different kinds of solutions of the so-called constraint equations, which can be pictured as orthogonal directions to the magnetic flux in ${\rm SU}(2)_R$ space. We further prove for all cases, that a seemingly vanishing Bogomol'nyi bound cannot have solutions. Finally, we write down the most general vortex equations in both master form and Taubes-like form. Remarkably, the final vortex equations essentially look Abelian in the sense that there is no trace of the ${\rm SU}(2)_R$ symmetry in the equations, after the constraint equations have been solved.

Dielectric Skyrmions

We consider the dielectric Skyrme model proposed recently, with and without the addition of the standard pion mass term. Then we write down Bogomol'nyi-type energy bounds for both the massless and massive cases. We further show that, except for when taking the strict BPS limit, the Skyrmions are made of 3 orthogonal dipoles that can always be placed in their attractive channel and form bound states. Finally, we study the model numerically and discover that, long before realistic binding energies are reached, the Skyrmions become bound states of well-separated point-particle-like Skyrmions. By going sufficiently close to the BPS limit, we are able to obtain classical binding energies of realistic values compared with experiments.

Near-BPS baby Skyrmions

We consider the baby-Skyrme model in the regime close to the so-called restricted baby-Skyrme model, which is a BPS model with area-preserving diffeomorphism invariance. The perturbation takes the form of the standard kinetic Dirichlet term with a small coefficient $ε$. Classical solutions of this model, to leading order in $ε$, are called restricted harmonic maps. In the BPS limit ($ε\to 0$) of the model with the potential being the standard pion-mass term, the solution with unit topological charge is a compacton. Using analytical and numerical arguments we obtain solutions to the problem for topological sectors greater than one. We develop a perturbative scheme in $ε$ with which we can calculate the corrections to the BPS mass. The leading order ($\mathcal{O}(ε^1)$) corrections show that the baby Skyrmion with topological charge two is energetically preferred. The binding energy requires us to go to the third order in $ε$ to capture the relevant terms in perturbation theory, however, the binding energy contributes to the total energy at order $ε^2$. We find that the baby Skyrmions - in the near-BPS regime - are compactons of topological charge two, that touch each other on their periphery at a single point and with orientations in the attractive channel.

Linked vortices as baryons in the miscible BEC-Skyrme model

We introduce a variation of the Bose-Einstein condensate(BEC)-Skyrme model, with an altered potential for miscible BECs that gives rise to two physical vortex strings. In the ground state of each topological sector, the vortices are linked exactly $B$ times, due to a recently formulated theorem, with $B$ being the baryon number of the solution. The model also possesses metastable states, where the vortices are degenerate and do not lend the interpretation of the baryon number as the linking number of the vortices.

Realistic classical binding energies in the $ω$-Skyrme model

An omega-meson extension of the Skyrme model - without the Skyrme term but including the pion mass - first considered by Adkins and Nappi is studied in detail for baryon numbers 1 to 8. The static problem is reformulated as a constrained energy minimisation problem within a natural geometric framework and studied analytically on compact domains, and numerically on Euclidean space. Using a constrained second-order Newton flow algorithm, classical energy minimisers are constructed for various values of the omega-pion coupling. At high coupling, these Skyrmion solutions are qualitatively similar to the Skyrmions of the standard Skyrme model with massless pions. At sufficiently low coupling, they show similarities with those in the lightly bound Skyrme model: the Skyrmions of low baryon number dissociate into lightly bound clusters of distinct 1-Skyrmions, and the classical binding energies for baryon numbers 2 through 8 have realistic values.

Deuteron electric dipole moment from holographic QCD

We compute the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the deuteron in the holographic QCD model of Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto. Previously, the leading contribution to the EDM of nucleons was computed, finding opposite values for the proton and the neutron which then cancel each other in the deuteron state. Here we compute the next-to-leading order contribution which provides a splitting between their absolute value. At large $N_{\rm c}$ and large 't Hooft coupling $λ$, nuclei are bound states of almost isolated nucleons. In particular, we find that in this limit the deuteron EDM is given by the splitting between proton and neutron EDMs. Our estimate for the deuteron EDM extrapolated to the physical values of $N_{\rm c}$, $λ$, $M_{\rm KK}$ and $m_q$ is $\mathcal{D}_D = -0.92\times 10^{-16} θ e \cdot {cm}$. This is consistent, in sign and magnitude, with results found previously in the literature and obtained using completely different methods.

Chemical bonds of two vortex species with a generalized Josephson term and arbitrary charges

We consider the Abelian-Higgs model with two complex scalar fields and arbitrary positive integer charges with the addition of a higher-order generalization of the Josephson term. The theory possesses vortices of both local and global variants. The only finite-energy configurations are shown to be the local vortices for which a certain combination of vortex numbers and electric charges -- called the global vortex number -- vanishes. The local vortices have rational fractional magnetic flux, as opposed to the global counterparts that can have an arbitrary fractional flux. The global vortices have angular domain walls, which we find good analytic approximate solutions for. Finally, we find a full classification of the minimal local vortices as well as a few nonminimal networks of vortices, using numerical methods.

Linking number of vortices as baryon number

We show that the topological degree of a Skyrmion field is the same as the Hopf charge of the field under the Hopf map and thus equals the linking number of the preimages of two points on the 2-sphere under the Hopf map. We further interpret two particular points on the 2-sphere as vortex zeros and the linking of these zero lines follows from the latter theorem. Finally we conjecture that the topological degree of the Skyrmion can be interpreted as the product of winding numbers of vortices corresponding to the zero lines, summing over clusters of vortices.

Large-$N$ $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ sigma model on a Euclidean torus: uniqueness and stability of the vacuum

In this paper we examine analytically the large-$N$ gap equation and its solution for the $2D$ $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ sigma model defined on a Euclidean spacetime torus of arbitrary shape and size ($L, β)$, $β$ being the inverse temperature. We find that the system has a unique homogeneous phase, with the $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ fields $n_i$ acquiring a dynamically generated mass $\langleλ\rangle\geΛ^2$ (analogous to the mass gap of $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory in $4D$), for any $β$ and $L$. Several related topics in the recent literature are discussed. One concerns the possibility, which turns out to be excluded according to our analysis, of a "Higgs-like" - or deconfinement - phase at small $L$ and at zero temperature. Another topics involves "soliton-like (inhomogeneous) solutions of the generalized gap equation, which we do not find. A related question concerns a possible instability of the standard $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ vacuum on ${\mathbb{R}}^{2}$, which is shown not to occur. In all cases, the difference in the conclusions can be traced to the existence of certain zeromodes and their proper treatment. The $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model with twisted boundary conditions is also analyzed. The $θ$ dependence and different limits involving $N$, $β$ and $L$ are briefly discussed.

Temporally, Spatially or Light-like Modulated Vacua in Lorentz Invariant Theories

We study the vacuum structure of a class of Lorentz invariant field theories where the vacuum expectation values are not constant but are (phase) modulated. The vacua are classified into spatial, temporal, and light-like modulation types according to the patterns of spontaneous breaking of translational symmetry. The conditions for having temporal or light-like modulated vacua imply severe constraints on the models. We utilize the notion of generalized Nambu-Goldstone modes which appear in the modulated vacua. Finally, we examine fluctuation modes around these vacua and discuss their dynamics and the absence of ghosts.

Supersymmetry breaking and ghost Goldstino in modulated vacua

We discuss spontaneous supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking mechanisms by means of modulated vacua in four-dimensional ${\cal N} =1$ supersymmetric field theories. The SUSY breaking due to spatially modulated vacua is extended to the cases of temporally and lightlike modulated vacua, using a higher-derivative model with a chiral superfield, free from the Ostrogradsky instability and the auxiliary field problem. For all the kinds of modulated vacua, SUSY is spontaneously broken and the fermion in the chiral superfield becomes a Goldstino. We further investigate the stability of the modulated vacua. The vacua are (meta)stable if the vacuum energy density is non-negative. However, the vacua become unstable due to the presence of the ghost Goldstino if the vacuum energy density is negative. Finally, we derive the relation between the presence of the ghost Goldstino and the negative vacuum energy density in the modulated vacua using the SUSY algebra.

Exploring the generalized loosely bound Skyrme model

The Skyrme model is extended with a sextic derivative term - called the BPS-Skyrme term - and a repulsive potential term - called the loosely bound potential. A large part of the model's parameter space is studied for the 4-Skyrmion which corresponds to the Helium-4 nucleus and emphasis is put on preserving as much of the platonic symmetries as possible whilst reducing the binding energies. We reach classical binding energies for Helium-4 as low as 0.2%, while retaining the cubic symmetry of the 4-Skyrmion, and after taking into account the quantum mass correction to the nucleon due to spin/isospin quantization, we get total binding energies as low as 3.6% - still with the cubic symmetry intact.

Baryonic handles: Skyrmions as open vortex strings on a domain wall

We consider the BEC-Skyrme model which is based on a Skyrme-type model with a potential motivated by Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) and, in particular, we study the Skyrmions in proximity of a domain wall that inhabits the theory. The theory turns out to have a rich flora of Skyrmion solutions that manifest themselves as twisted vortex rings or vortons in the bulk and vortex handles attached to the domain wall. The latter are linked open vortex strings. We further study the interaction between the domain wall and the Skyrmion and between the vortex handles themselves as well as between the vortex handle and the vortex ring in the bulk. We find that the domain wall provides a large binding energy for the solitons and it is energetically preferred to stay as close to the domain wall as possible; other configurations sticking into the bulk are metastable. We find that the most stable 2-Skyrmion is a torus-shaped braided string junction ending on the domain wall, which is produced by a collision of two vortex handles on the wall, but there is also a metastable configuration which is a doubly twisted vortex handle produced by a collision of a vortex handle on the wall and a vortex ring from the bulk.

Vibrational modes of Skyrmions

We study the vibrational modes of Skyrmions with baryon numbers one through eight in the standard Skyrme model. The vibrational modes are found in the harmonic approximation around the classical soliton solution and the real parts of the frequencies of the modes are extracted. We further classify the vibrational modes into representations of the symmetries possessed by the Skyrmion solutions. We find that there are approximately 7B low-lying modes for a Skyrmion with baryon number B, in addition to an infinite continuum of scattering modes. This result suggests that the instanton moduli space, which is 8B-dimensional, does not accurately describe the deformation space of Skyrmions as previously conjectured.

The $B=5$ Skyrmion as a two-cluster system

The classical $B=5$ Skyrmion can be approximated by a two-cluster system where a $B=1$ Skyrmion is attached to a core $B=4$ Skyrmion. We quantise this system, allowing the $B=1$ to freely orbit the core. The configuration space is 11-dimensional but simplifies significantly after factoring out the overall spin and isospin degrees of freedom. We exactly solve the free quantum problem and then include an interaction potential between the Skyrmions numerically. The resulting energy spectrum is compared to the corresponding nuclei -- the Helium-5/Lithium-5 isodoublet. We find approximate parity doubling not seen in the experimental data. In addition, we fail to obtain the correct ground state spin. The framework laid out for this two-cluster system can readily be modified for other clusters and in particular for other $B=4n+1$ nuclei, of which the $B=5$ is the simplest example.

Higher-order Skyrme hair of black holes

Higher-order derivative terms are considered as replacement for the Skyrme term in an Einstein-Skyrme-like model in order to pinpoint which properties are necessary for a black hole to possess stable static scalar hair. We find two new models able to support stable black hole hair in the limit of the Skyrme term being turned off. They contain 8 and 12 derivatives, respectively, and are roughly the Skyrme-term squared and the so-called BPS-Skyrme-term squared. In the twelfth-order model we find that the lower branches, which are normally unstable, become stable in the limit where the Skyrme term is turned off. We check this claim with a linear stability analysis. Finally, we find for a certain range of the gravitational coupling and horizon radius, that the twelfth-order model contains 4 solutions as opposed to 2. More surprisingly, the lowest part of the would-be unstable branch turns out to be the stable one of the 4 solutions.

Large-$N$ $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ sigma model on a finite interval: general Dirichlet boundary conditions

This is the third of the series of articles on the large-$N$ two-dimensional $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ sigma model, defined on a finite space interval $L$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Here the cases of the general Dirichlet boundary conditions are studied, where the relative $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ orientations at the two boundaries are generic, and numerical solutions are presented. Distinctive features of the $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ sigma model, as compared e.g., to an $O(N)$ model, which were not entirely evident in the basic properties studied in the first two articles in the large $N$ limit, manifest themselves here. It is found that the total energy is minimized when the fields are aligned in the same direction at the two boundaries.
