Large-N CP(N-1) sigma model on a finite interval and the renormalized string energy

We continue the analysis started in a recent paper of the large-N two-dimensional CP(N-1) sigma model, defined on a finite space interval L with Dirichlet (or Neumann) boundary conditions. Here we focus our attention on the problem of the renormalized energy density $\mathcal{E}(x,Λ,L)$ which is found to be a sum of two terms, a constant term coming from the sum over modes, and a term proportional to the mass gap. The approach to $\mathcal{E}(x,Λ,L)\to\tfrac{N}{4π}Λ^2$ at large $LΛ$ is shown, both analytically and numerically, to be exponential: no power corrections are present and in particular no Lüscher term appears. This is consistent with the earlier result which states that the system has a unique massive phase, which interpolates smoothly between the classical weakly-coupled limit for $LΛ\to 0$ and the "confined" phase of the standard CP(N-1) model in two dimensions for $LΛ\to\infty$.

Boundary charges and integral identities for solitons in $(d+1)$-dimensional field theories

We establish a 3-parameter family of integral identities to be used on a class of theories possessing solitons with spherical symmetry in $d$ spatial dimensions. The construction provides five boundary charges that are related to certain integrals of the profile functions of the solitons in question. The framework is quite generic and we give examples of both topological defects (like vortices and monopoles) and topological textures (like Skyrmions) in 2 and 3 dimensions. The class of theories considered here is based on a kinetic term and three functionals often encountered in reduced Lagrangians for solitons. One particularly interesting case provides a generalization of the well-known Pohozaev identity. Our construction, however, is fundamentally different from scaling arguments behind Derrick's theorem and virial relations. For BPS vortices, we find interestingly an infinity of integrals simply related to the topological winding number.

A higher-order Skyrme model

We propose a higher-order Skyrme model with derivative terms of eighth, tenth and twelfth order. Our construction yields simple and easy-to-interpret higher-order Lagrangians. We first show that a Skyrmion with higher-order terms proposed by Marleau has an instability in the form of a baby-Skyrmion string, while the static energies of our construction are positive definite, implying stability against time-independent perturbations. However, we also find that the Hamiltonians of our construction possess two kinds of dynamical instabilities, which may indicate the instability with respect to time-dependent perturbations. Different from the well-known Ostrogradsky instability, the instabilities that we find are intrinsically of nonlinear nature and also due to the fact that even powers of the inverse metric gives a ghost-like higher-order kinetic-like term. The vacuum state is, however, stable. Finally, we show that at sufficiently low energies, our Hamiltonians in the simplest cases, are stable against time-dependent perturbations.

A Solitonic Approach to Holographic Nuclear Physics

We discuss nuclear physics in the Sakai-Sugimoto model in the limit of large number $N_c$ of colors and large 't Hooft coupling $λ$. In this limit the individual baryons are described by classical solitons whose size is much smaller than the typical distance at which they settle in a nuclear bound state. We can thus use the linear approximation outside the instanton cores to compute the interaction potential. We find the classical geometry of nuclear bound states for baryon number up to eight. One of the interesting features that we find is that holographic nuclear physics provides a natural description for lightly bound states when $λ$ is large. For the case of two nuclei, we also find the topology and metric of the manifold of zero modes and, quantizing it, we find that the ground state can be identified with the deuteron state. We discuss the relations with other methods in the literature used to study Skyrmions and holographic nuclear physics. We discuss $1/{N_c}$ and $1/λ$ corrections and the challenges to overcome to reach the phenomenological values to fit with real QCD.

Some exact Bradlow vortex solutions

We consider the Bradlow equation for vortices which was recently found by Manton and find a two-parameter class of analytic solutions in closed form on nontrivial geometries with non-constant curvature. The general solution to our class of metrics is given by a hypergeometric function and the area of the vortex domain by the Gaussian hypergeometric function.

Topological solitons in the supersymmetric Skyrme model

A supersymmetric extension of the Skyrme model was obtained recently, which consists of only the Skyrme term in the Nambu-Goldstone (pion) sector complemented by the same number of quasi-Nambu-Goldstone bosons. Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction yields a kinetic term in three or lower dimensions and a potential term in two dimensions, preserving supersymmetry. Euclidean solitons (instantons) are constructed in the supersymmetric Skyrme model. In four dimensions, the soliton is an instanton first found by Speight. Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction is then performed once to get a 3-dimensional theory in which a 3d Skyrmion-instanton is found and then once more to get a 2d theory in which a 2d vortex-instanton is obtained. Although the last one is a global vortex it has finite action in contrast to conventional theory. All of them are non-BPS states breaking all supersymmetries.

Generalized Skyrme model with the loosely bound potential

We study a generalization of the loosely bound Skyrme model which consists of the Skyrme model with a sixth-order derivative term - motivated by its fluid-like properties - and the second-order loosely bound potential - motivated by lowering the classical binding energies of higher-charged Skyrmions. We use the rational map approximation for the Skyrmion of topological charge B=4, calculate the binding energy of the latter and estimate the systematic error in using this approximation. In the parameter space that we can explore within the rational map approximation, we find classical binding energies as low as 1.8% and once taking into account the contribution from spin-isospin quantization we obtain binding energies as low as 5.3%. We also calculate the contribution from the sixth-order derivative term to the electric charge density and axial coupling.

Modifying the pion mass in the loosely bound Skyrme model

We study the loosely bound Skyrme model with the addition of two different pion mass terms; this is the most general potential of polynomial form up to second order in the trace of the Skyrme field. The two pion mass terms are called the standard pion mass term and the modified pion mass term. We find that the binding energies are not reduced by the introduction of the modified pion mass, but it is analogous to the standard pion mass term with a decrease in the value of the mass parameter of the loosely bound potential (for large values of the latter parameter). We find by increasing the overall pion mass that we can reduce the classical binding energy of the 4-Skyrmion to the 2.7% level and the total binding energy including the contribution from spin/isospin quantization is reduced to the 5.8% level.

Black hole Skyrmion in a generalized Skyrme model

We study a Skyrme-like model with the Skyrme term and a sixth-order derivative term as higher-order terms, coupled to gravity and we construct Schwarzschild black hole Skyrme hair. We find, surprisingly, that the sixth-order derivative term alone cannot stabilize the black hole hair solutions; the Skyrme term with a large enough coefficient is a necessity.

Skyrmions confined as beads on a vortex ring

A very simple, quadratic potential is used to construct vortex strings in a generalized Skyrme model and an additional quadratic potential is used to embed sine-Gordon-type halfkinks onto the string worldline, yielding half-Skyrmions on a string. The strings are furthermore compactified onto a circle and the halfkinks are forced to appear in pairs; in particular 2B halfkinks (half-Skyrmions) will appear as beads on a ring with B being the number of times the host vortex is twisted and also the baryon number (Skyrmion number) from the bulk point of view. Finally, we construct an effective field theory on the torus, describing the kinks living on the vortex rings.

BPS pion domain walls in the supersymmetric chiral Lagrangian

We construct exact solutions of BPS pion domain walls in the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric SU(N) chiral Lagrangian with pion masses introduced via linear and quadratic superpotentials. The model admits N discrete vacua in the center of SU(N) for the linear superpotential. In addition to the latter, new vacua appear for the quadratic superpotential. We find that the domain wall solutions of pions (Nambu-Goldstone bosons) that interpolate between a pair of (pion) vacua preserve half of supersymmetry. Contrary to our expectations, we have not been able to find domain walls involving the quasi-Nambu-Goldstone bosons present in the theory, which in turn has the consequence that not all vacua of the theory are connected by a BPS domain wall solution.

Loosening up the Skyrme model

We consider the Skyrme model with the addition of extra scalar potentials that decrease the classical binding energies of the Skyrmions to about the 3% level -- without altering the pion mass -- if we insist on keeping platonic symmetries that are usually possessed by Skyrmions. A side effect of the potentials under consideration is the smaller size of the 1-Skyrmion resulting in a smaller moment of inertia and in turn a larger spin contribution to the energy upon semi-classical quantization. After taking into account the quantum contributions we find total binding energies at the 6% level.

A supersymmetric Skyrme model

Construction of a supersymmetric extension of the Skyrme term was a long-standing problem because of the auxiliary field problem; that is, the auxiliary field may propagate and cannot be eliminated, and the problem of having fourth-order time derivative terms. In this paper, we construct for the first time a supersymmetric extension of the Skyrme term in four spacetime dimensions, in the manifestly supersymmetric superfield formalism that does not suffer from the auxiliary field problem. Chiral symmetry breaking in supersymmetric theories results not only in Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons (pions) but also in the same number of quasi-NG bosons so that the low-energy theory is described by an SL(N,C)-valued matrix field instead of SU(N) for NG bosons. The solution of auxiliary fields is trivial on the canonical branch of the auxiliary field equation, in which case our model results in a fourth-order derivative term that is not the Skyrme term. For the case of SL(2,C), we find explicitly a nontrivial solution to the algebraic auxiliary field equations that we call a non-canonical branch, which when substituted back into the Lagrangian gives a Skyrme-like model. If we restrict to a submanifold, where quasi-NG bosons are turned off, which is tantamount to restricting the Skyrme field to SU(2), then the fourth-order derivative term reduces exactly to the standard Skyrme term. Our model is the first example of a nontrivial auxiliary field solution in a multi-component model.

Gravitating BPS Skyrmions

The BPS Skyrme model has many exact analytic solutions in flat space. We generalize the model to a curved space or spacetime and find that the solutions can only be BPS for a constant time-time component of the metric tensor. We find exact solutions on the curved spaces: a 3-sphere and a 3-hyperboloid; and we further find an analytic gravitating Skyrmion on the 3-sphere. For the case of a nontrivial time-time component of the metric, we suggest a potential for which we find analytic solutions on anti-de Sitter and de Sitter spacetimes in the limit of no gravitational backreaction. We take the gravitational coupling into account in numerical solutions and show that they are well approximated by the analytic solutions for weak gravitational coupling.

Global two-monopoles

Global two-monopoles are unstable in their simplest formulation. We construct a model with a metric-like prefactor which we show can stabilize the global two-monopoles. The stabilizing construction is realized with a Skyrme sector where the metric-like prefactor is a function of the Skyrmion profile.

Effective field theories on solitons of generic shapes

A class of effective field theories for moduli or collective coordinates on solitons of generic shapes is constructed. As an illustration, we consider effective field theories living on solitons in the O(4) non-linear sigma model with higher-derivative terms.

Fractional Skyrmions and their molecules

We study a Skyrme-type model with a quadratic potential for a field with $S^2$ vacua. We consider two flavors of the model, the first is the Skyrme model and the second has a sixth-order derivative term instead of the Skyrme term; both with the added quadratic potential. The model contains molecules of half Skyrmions, each of them is a global (anti-)monopole with baryon number 1/2. We numerically construct solutions with baryon numbers one through six, and find stable solutions which look like beads on rings. We also construct a molecule with fractional Skyrmions having the baryon numbers 1/3 + 2/3, by adding a linear potential term.

Baryon and chiral symmetry breaking in holographic QCD

We study the relationship between chiral symmetry breaking and baryons in holographic QCD. We construct a soliton with unit baryon charge in the presence of a nonzero mean value of the scalar bifundamental field, which is dual to the chiral condensate. We obtain a relation between the chiral condensate and the mass of the baryon and find in a clear-cut way that at large values of the condensate the holographic soliton is no longer located on the IR wall. Instead it is split into two halves, which are symmetrically located on the left and right flavor branes. On the other hand we find that the local value of the quark condensate is suppressed in the core of the soliton, which is evidence for a partial chiral symmetry restoration inside the baryon.
