Meson2006 Summary: Theory

This is a summary of theoretical plenary contributions to the biennial hadron physics conference Meson2006, which was the ninth in this series. The topics covered in the meeting include low energy pion-pion and pion-nucleon interactions, photoproduction and hadronic production of light mesons and baryons,in-medium effects, recent developments in charmed mesons, charmonia and B mesons, the status of exotica, and some related topics such as final state interactions. In this contribution we review and summarize the plenary talks presented by theorists at the meeting, and emphasize some of the main points of their presentations. Where appropriate we will add brief comments on some aspects of QCD spectroscopy. Finally, following tradition, we conclude with a new Feynman story.

The XYZs of Charmonium at BES

This contribution reviews some recent developments in charmonium spectroscopy, and discusses related theoretical predictions. The spectrum of states, strong decays of states above open charm threshold, electromagnetic transitions, and issues related to the recent discoveries of the "XYZ" states are discussed. Contributions that BES can make to our understanding of charmonium and related states are stressed in particular.

Nucleon-Meson Coupling Constants and Form Factors in the Quark Model

We demonstrate the calculation of the coupling constants and form factors required by effective hadron lagrangians using the quark model. These relations follow from equating expressions for strong transition amplitudes in the two approaches. As examples we derive the NNm nucleon-meson coupling constants and form factors for m = pi, eta, eta', sigma, a_0, omega and rho, using harmonic oscillator quark model meson and baryon wavefunctions and the 3P0 decay model; this is a first step towards deriving a quark-based model of the NN force at all separations. This technique should be useful in the application of effective lagrangians to processes in which the lack of data precludes the direct determination of coupling constants and form factors from experiment.

HADRON05 Summary: Heavy Quark Hadrons and Theory

This HADRON05 summary covers the topics of (1) mesons containing heavy quarks, and (2) theory. The new material discussed here is taken mainly from plenary presentations. We specifically emphasize new or recent results in spectroscopy that are likely to appear in future editions of the PDG. An exception is made for the pentaquark, which has now been withdrawn. We undoubtedly have something important to (re)learn about multiquarks from the pentaquark saga, and this merits a phrase in Portuguese. The three general areas we consider are: I. QQbar spectroscopy, II. Qqbar spectroscopy, and III. lessons from the pentaquark. Finally, in Section IIIb. we conclude with "Our moment of Zen".

Higher Charmonia

This paper gives results for the spectrum, all allowed E1 radiative partial widths (and some important M1 widths) and all open-charm strong decay amplitudes of all 40 c-cbar states expected up to the mass of the 4S multiplet, just above 4.4 GeV. The spectrum and radiative widths are evaluated using two models, the relativized Godfrey-Isgur model and a nonrelativistic potential model. The electromagnetic transitions are evaluated using Coulomb plus linear plus smeared hyperfine wavefunctions, both in a nonrelativistic potential model and in the Godfrey-Isgur model. The open-flavor strong decay amplitudes are determined assuming harmonic oscillator wavefunctions and the 3P0 decay model. This work is intended to motivate future experimental studies of higher-mass charmonia, and may be useful for the analysis of high-statistics data sets to be accumulated by the BES, CLEO and GSI facilities.

2D Ferromagnetism in the High-Tc Analogue Cs_2AgF_4

Although the precise mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity in the layered cuprates remains unknown, it is generally thought that strong 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnetism combined with disruptive hole doping is an essential aspect of the phenomenon. Intensive studies of other layered 3d transition metal systems have greatly extended our understanding of strongly correlated electron states, but to date have failed to show strong 2D antiferromagnetism or high-Tc superconductivity. For this reason the largely unexplored 4d^9 Ag^II fluorides, which are structurally and perhaps magnetically similar to the 3d^9 Cu^II cuprates, merit close study. Here we present a comprehensive study of magnetism in the layered Ag^II fluoride Cs_2AgF_4, using magnetic susceptometry, neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. We find that this material is well described as a 2D Heisenberg ferromagnet, in sharp contrast to the high-Tc cuprates. The exchange constant J is the largest known for any material of this type. We suggest that orbital ordering may be the origin of the ferromagnetism we observe in this material.

Charmonium production in p pbar annihilation: Estimating cross sections from decay widths

The cross sections for the charmonium production processes p pbar -> m Psi, where m is a light meson and Psi is a charmonium state, are of great interest for the planned p-pbar experiment PANDA. In this paper we estimate these cross sections using known results for the decays Psi -> m p pbar which are related to these reactions by crossing. In lieu of detailed experimental data on the decay Dalitz plots, we assume a constant amplitude as a first approximation; this implies a simple relation between the cross sections and decay widths. The single measured exclusive cross section of this type is p pbar -> pi0 J/psi, which was reported by E760 to be 130 +/- 25 pb near sqrt(s) = 3.5-3.6 GeV. In comparison, our constant amplitude estimate is about 300 pb at this energy. This suggests that our approach is useful as a simple estimate, but should be refined through detailed modeling of resonances and other energy-dependent effects in the experimental Psi -> m p pbar Dalitz plots.

Neutron Scattering and Magnetic Observables for S = 1/2 Molecular Magnets

In this paper we report results for magnetic observables of finite spin clusters composed of S=1/2 ions. We consider clusters of two, three and four spins in distinct spatial arrangements, with isotropic Heisenberg interactions of various strengths between ion pairs. In addition to the complete set of energy eigenvalues and eigenvectors, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility, we also quote results for the single crystal and powder average inelastic neutron scattering structure factors. Examples of the application of these results to experimental systems are also discussed.

Higher Charmonium

This contribution briefly discusses some new theoretical results for the properties of charmonium, especially the "higher charmonium" states above open-charm threshold. In particular we discuss the spectrum of states, open-flavor strong decays, and the surprisingly large effects of virtual decay loops of charmed meson pairs.

The Saga of $h_c$ and $h_b$ Search in Heavy Quarkonia

In this brief review, we examine carefully and critically the status of search for the $h_c$ [$ψ(1^1P_1)$] charmonium state and the $h_b$ [$Υ(1^1P_1)$] bottonium state, initiated by the E760 experiment. Recent experimental studies at CLEO/BABAR/BELLE are examined in the light of new theoretical and phenomenological understanding.

Options for the SELEX state D$_{s\J}^+(2632)$

We consider possible assignments for the D$_{s\J}^+(2632)$, which was recently reported in D$_s^+η$ and D$^0$K$^+$ final states by the SELEX Collaboration at Fermilab. The most plausible quark model assignment for this state is the first radial excitation ($2^3§_1$) of the $c\bar s$ D$_s^*(2112)$, although the predicted mass and strong decay branching fractions for this assignment are not in agreement with the SELEX data. The reported dominance of D$_sη$ over DK appears especially problematic. An intriguing similarity to the K$^*(1414)$ is noted. $2^3§_1$--$^3\D_1$ configuration mixing is also considered, and we find that this effect is unlikely to resolve the branching fraction discrepancy. Other interpretations as a $c\bar s$-hybrid or a two-meson molecule are also considered, but appear unlikely. Thus, if this state is confirmed, it will require reconsideration of the systematics of charmed meson spectroscopy and strong decays.

Charmonium at BES and CLEO-c

This paper gives a short summary of some of the aspects of charmonium which can be addressed at BES and CLEO-c and other $e^+e^-$ facilities. These topics include the spectroscopy of charmonium states, radiative transitions, $e^+e^-$ widths, two-photon widths, hadron loop effects and open-flavor strong decays.

Strong Decays: Past, Present and Future

In this talk I review the history of models of strong decays, from the original model through applications to charmonium, light and charmed mesons, glueballs and hybrids. Our current rather limited understanding of the QCD mechanism of strong decays is stressed. Regarding current and future applications of strong decay models, we note that in certain channels the very strong coupling predicted between |qqbar> basis states and the two-meson continuum may lead to strongly mixed states and perhaps molecular two-meson bound states. The relevance to the D_{sJ}*(2317) is discussed.

Distribution of exchange energy in a bond-alternating S=1 quantum spin chain

The quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating S=1 quantum antiferromagnet NTENP is studied by single crystal inelastic neutron scattering. Parameters of the measured dispersion relation for magnetic excitations are compared to existing numerical results and used to determine the magnitude of bond-strength alternation. The measured neutron scattering intensities are also analyzed using the 1st-moment sum rules for the magnetic dynamic structure factor, to directly determine the modulation of ground state exchange energies. These independently determined modulation parameters characterize the level of spin dimerization in NTENP. First-principle DMRG calculations are used to study the relation between these two quantities.

Charmonium Cross Sections and the QGP

In this short review we summarize experimental information and theoretical results for the low-energy dissociation cross sections of charmonia by light hadrons. These cross sections are required for the simulation of charmonium absorption through collisions with comovers in heavy ion collisions, which competes with quark-gluon plasma production as a charmonium-suppression mechanism. If the cross sections are sufficiently large these dissociation reactions may be misinterpreted as an effect of quark-gluon plasma production. Theoretical predictions for these RHIC-related processes have used various methods, including a color-dipole scattering model, meson exchange models, constituent interchange models and QCD sum rules. As the results have been largely unconstrained by experiment, some of the predictions differ by orders of magnitude, notably in the near-threshold regime that is most relevant to QGP searches.

Closed-flavor pi + J/psi and pi + Upsilon Cross Sections at Low Energies from Dipion Decays

The scale of low energy c-cbar and b-bbar cross sections on light hadrons is of great importance to searches for the quark gluon plasma using the heavy-quarkonium suppression signature. Unfortunately, little is known about these near-threshold cross sections at present, and recent theoretical estimates span many orders of magnitude. Here we use experimental data on the four observed closed-flavor heavy quarkonium hadronic decays psi' -> pi pi J/psi, Upsilon' -> pi pi Upsilon, Upsilon'' -> pi pi Upsilon and Upsilon'' -> pi pi Upsilon', combined with simple models of the transition amplitudes, to estimate the pion scattering cross sections of c-cbar and b-bbar mesons near threshold. Specifically we consider the closed-flavor reactions pi J/psi -> pi psi', pi Upsilon -> pi Upsilon', pi Upsilon -> pi Upsilon'' and pi Upsilon' -> pi Upsilon'' and their time-reversed analogues. Our results may be useful in constraining theoretical models of the strong interactions of heavy quarkonia, and can be systematically improved through future detailed studies of dipion decays, notably psi' -> pi pi J/psi and Upsilon'' -> pi pi Upsilon.

Exploring QCD: from LEAR to GSI

In this invited contribution I briefly review some of the principal topics in hadron spectroscopy that were studied at the CERN low-energy antiproton facility LEAR, from its beginnings in the early 1980s to the present. These topics include the nature of multiquark systems, the short-ranged nuclear force, and gluonic hadrons, including glueballs and hybrids. Lessons we have learned from the LEAR program that are relevant to the future GSI project are given particular emphasis.
